00:00:02.920 --> 00:00:26.800
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, metal's my religion, and yeah, it's my dope. Standing in the thunder on stage in the pouring metal rain. What a feeling, baby, the lights are exploding.

00:00:56.140 --> 00:00:59.420
Hello and welcome to the Metalheads Podcast. My name is George.

00:00:59.660 --> 00:01:29.540
My name is Buke. This is Will. This is John. And unfortunately, Jay can't join us right now. We're hoping that he'll show up later, but he is having some technical difficulties which are preventing him from being here right now. And being the champ that he is, he said the show must go on, and so we're going to carry on, and hopefully he'll show up later. But right now, with us, we have Keith D. from Unearthed Elf and Arctic Sleep. How you doing, Keith? Good, man. Thanks for having me on the show. It's good to finally actually speak with you after having, you know,

00:01:29.640 --> 00:01:59.600
and things like that for a while. Yeah, yeah. So let me first start by saying, Keith, coming on the podcast here, you run no chance of blowing out your knee and getting hurt again. Okay? I wouldn't bet on it, man. I'm pretty clumsy. Sounds like with your other band, Hearts Like Sleep, sounds like you had a major injury that kind of sidelined your plans last year. Yeah, it sure did. It sidelined everything. What happened? Well, I originally injured my knee. I have a cool story about it.

00:01:59.660 --> 00:02:03.340
I injured my knee doing something cool actually

00:02:03.630 --> 00:02:05.540
I was uh you guys are familiar with

00:02:05.660 --> 00:02:07.400
ale storm oh yeah man yeah

00:02:07.670 --> 00:02:09.820
I went to an ale storm show

00:02:09.910 --> 00:02:11.620
and I got really excited and

00:02:11.880 --> 00:02:13.700
I drank way too much and

00:02:13.830 --> 00:02:15.960
I thought it would be cool to have fun

00:02:15.960 --> 00:02:17.040
in the pit so

00:02:17.480 --> 00:02:19.700
I went in the mosh pit and

00:02:19.980 --> 00:02:21.820
realized that I'm too old for it

00:02:21.940 --> 00:02:23.780
man I got knocked around and

00:02:24.060 --> 00:02:25.500
busted up my knee something fierce

00:02:26.680 --> 00:02:27.940
I'm pretty sure we

00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:29.620
all have the same story

00:02:29.640 --> 00:02:59.600
Yes. Maybe not quite so bad, but I certainly know the feeling. We can all relate. Yeah, we can all relate. That day when you realized you're too old for the pit. Yes, yes. I was like 18, I think. Now I'm one of those guys that stands in the back of the show. Yeah, yeah. We have talked about it on the pod before, but George is the cranky guy when people are even touching him. He's like, ew, get off me. Give me space. That's not true. I just get cranky about the people that are like six foot seven and they're standing in front of me the whole

00:02:59.620 --> 00:03:29.600
Hey, actually, Keith, now we're the guys who buy tickets upstairs to sit in the seats, so we don't have to stand in the back anymore. Yeah, even the standing part's getting old. Yeah, even though I'm pissed that we have to pay that fee to sit up there. Yeah, but I'm glad we have that option. Anyway, getting back to Keith, so why don't you give us a little bit of a background on Unearthed Elf? Oh, yeah, sure. Well, this is a project that I started doing just kind of to entertain myself, really, while I was out with the

00:03:29.640 --> 00:03:55.260
the injury and everything. And I'd always had these weird little ideas for like little metal songs that were a little too bizarre or whatever to use for my main band Arctic Sleep. So I started working on these demos while I was injured and everything. And before I knew it, I had a whole albums worth of songs. So I was like, well, I've got to go record these now. So that's pretty much it.

00:03:55.300 --> 00:04:24.240
All right. Well, I don't know about anybody else, but I'm digging it. And that album that comes out, see, today's Friday, it's coming out on Monday, right? Tuesday? Yeah, I'll probably release it tomorrow. I'm getting antsy. Yeah, the official date is Halloween, but for the pre-orders and everything, they're already in the mail. People are getting them today for the most part. Can you get it on Bandcamp? Sure can. Yeah, it's up there right now. Now, for those who have not heard it or who will check it out after this,

00:04:25.320 --> 00:04:54.340
Vane of other bands and genres, how would you describe the sound of Unearthed Hell? You know, my primary focus genre-wise is epic doom metal, you know, like old-school epic doom metal. I wanted it to have a real 80s vibe, you know, like the old Candlemas stuff and everything, but kind of with a modern flair and, you know, a little bit of the theatrics of power metal and fantasy metal, too. Yeah, I think you pretty much nailed it.

00:04:54.440 --> 00:05:21.380
Yeah. All right. So the title of the album, which we haven't managed to get in here yet, is Into the Catacomb Abyss. Can you tell us a little bit about your songwriting process other than hurting your knee? That's hopefully not a requirement for every album. If he blows out his other knee, he will get a third band. Oh, shit. Oh, man. Trust me. You don't want to tear your ACL, man. It sucks. But yeah, for Into the Catacomb Abyss, I wanted a lot of atmosphere.

00:05:24.480 --> 00:05:54.380
visiting graveyards when I travel and stuff. I like going to historical sites and checking out tombs and crypts and graveyards and stuff. So I wanted to kind of bring that sort of gothic atmosphere into it as well. Have you ever run into anyone getting engaged while you're doing this? No. Which will be a later news story. Yeah. I don't know if I ever run into anybody getting engaged in a graveyard, I think... Have you run into anybody engaging in a graveyard? That would be something.

00:05:55.419 --> 00:06:24.280
Or have you ever just rounded a corner in a graveyard and just ran into somebody else here and you're like, hey, what's up? Yeah, even just running into anybody at all in the graveyard is a little creepy. Yeah, yeah. I've never run into anybody there. Yeah, okay. I can imagine making a laugh and someone's just sitting down on the bench and it's like, what's up? Nothing. Go about your way. So I want to get us back on focus a little bit. Well, he was talking about his songwriting process. Oh, well, I was going to ask, what's everyone drinking? We'll get to that. Oh.

00:06:24.460 --> 00:06:54.120
What am I supposed to talk about? Well, I asked you about your songwriting process, and you said that you liked going to graveyards and things like that, and we just sort of get derailed from there. Oh, that's right. Yeah, so I like going to those places, and I'd take photography and stuff like that. All the photography for that album we did in a historic gravesite here in Milwaukee called Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum, and I was kind of nervous about doing the photo shoot and everything,

00:06:54.200 --> 00:07:23.940
I hired a photographer for it, but I had to get in this costume, you know, where I have the elf ears and the hair and the priest get up, basically. And it's a Catholic cemetery, so I was really freaked out that, you know, somebody who runs the place or whatever was going to show up and be like, what the fuck are you doing? But fortunately, we didn't run into anybody. It was snowing and everything. So. Mirkoor wasn't in there recording a live album. I don't know if you know who that is.

00:07:24.220 --> 00:07:53.120
And you can find these pictures at unearthelf.com. Yeah, yeah, there's quite a few of them. It's a real cool place, too. So my understanding is that you do everything on the album, or I don't know if you have anybody helping out. Yeah, it's 100% solo recording. I played every instrument and did every vocal on the record. How do you start? Do you start and lay down some drums and then put guitars over that, or how do you do it? For the recording itself,

00:07:54.240 --> 00:08:23.200
Especially when you're doing an album like that. I track all the drums to a metronome so that it can be really accurate and then just start layering on from there. I like the clean, kind of minimal production. And I say minimal because it's not a wall of sound that's just all mushy and can't hear anything. I really dig the production. Well, that's good. And the vocals too. The music, it's interesting. I was talking to John about this.

00:08:23.300 --> 00:08:53.240
And on one hand, it reminds me a little bit of Arctic Sleep, which of course makes sense. But it's a little doomier. But the clean vocals are just amazing, first of all. And they go really well with the music. I mean, it's traditional in a Candlemask sense, like you were saying. But at the same time, it's kind of maybe a little bit progressive and contemporary as compared to some of those older albums. Sure, a little bit. You know, I wanted this album to be really focused on the voice.

00:08:53.300 --> 00:09:23.180
I wanted that to be the main thing. And I kind of knew that it would be a divisive thing. I was like, people are either going to love this vocal style or they're going to hate it. And sure enough, most of the reviews are really good, but some people dig the vocal style and some don't. Yeah. So just sort of like with Arctic Sleep, you have this sort of vast ethereal sound. It's like all your music sounds like it's coming from a wide open space, which I think is really cool.

00:09:23.300 --> 00:09:53.100
It doesn't sound like it's just like somebody, you know, in a cramped little closet in front of you. How do you do that? I think that has a lot to do with the tempos. You know, I've always been into playing really slow music. And when you have songs that are slow and have, you know, kind of slow motion drum beats and slower guitar parts and everything, it kind of just gives the notes and all the chords and everything room to breathe. So I like to have songs that, you know, have some breathing room.

00:09:53.500 --> 00:10:23.260
them, if that makes any sense. It does. I like that. Keith, was this your first attempt at going at something just totally solo? No, no. I've done it a bunch of times. This is probably the biggest production that I've done as a solo thing, but I've been making little recordings on my own ever since I was a little kid. Okay, now we have talked to a couple other guys who have done solo work and stuff like that. Are there things you have learned

00:10:23.300 --> 00:10:53.220
Now, after doing this a couple of times, that maybe you wish you could have passed down to younger you, like, hey, don't do this, or do this, that maybe you've learned three or four times down. Because, you know, in this internet age, we have a lot of people who listen, who do do their own stuff. Maybe you can pass along some advice. Boy, well, the recordings I made by myself when I was 14 are really fucking terrible. They're cringeworthy, and they're really bad.

00:10:53.300 --> 00:10:58.500
I still listen to him sometimes but it's tough you know some sometimes it's funny but

00:10:58.690 --> 00:11:23.260
sometimes I'm just like oh god this wow I used to really suck I know that feeling quite yeah yeah those those of us on the podcast that have heard them are chuckling to themselves going yeah you suck but yeah you know you just have to keep doing what you do you know in spite of everything and you just get a little bit better each time yeah hey so going down that line since you

00:11:23.280 --> 00:11:52.900
You did the whole album yourself. Did you find yourself tripping over yourself when you came to making decisions? You know, if you're recording it yourself, producing yourself, do you find that you may have a tough time making a decision on something? Or is it too easy to go with it, you know, that you're influenced by yourself, if that makes sense, what I'm saying? Yeah, like, you know, that's, that's a really good question. Actually, I did come to a lot of points where, you know, when you work by yourself, there's nobody to bounce ideas off of, really, it's just, you know, you almost get too comfortable with yourself, it seems like.

00:11:52.960 --> 00:12:21.360
Yeah, yeah. So, you know, you do got to bounce things off of somebody so you don't end up making a bunch of poor choices or not too many poor choices. So, you know, I mean, like you can play your demos for your wife and stuff. But I mean, my wife's awesome. But most of the time she'd be like, yeah, that's nice, Keith, whatever. But I have a longtime Arctic Sleep fan who kind of turned into a internet pen pal with me. His name's Scott out in Seattle.

00:12:22.180 --> 00:12:51.880
And I sort of had correspondence with him. So I'd always send him my demos and stuff when I was injured and be like, what do you think about this? What do you think about that? So I bounced my opinions off of him a lot. And it was really valuable. And I actually got to meet him when I traveled out to Seattle just a few months ago. And we went out and had a nice sushi dinner together. They're really, really cool people. So if he's a if he's a big fan, is he do you think he's able to be objective and give you like actual like no shit?

00:12:52.040 --> 00:13:21.380
Like, you know, maybe this sucks and maybe this is great or change this a little bit. I'm always curious about objectivity. Yeah, yeah, definitely. You know, he's a musician and into recording as well. So, you know, I always said, you know, don't hold back your opinion. You know, if you think this sucks, tell me. So he'd give me really good criticism and everything. So I ran with a lot of those suggestions. You ever find yourself going, this sounds a little bit too much like Arctic Sleep or Unearthed Elf?

00:13:22.580 --> 00:13:42.640
Well, you know, I purposefully tried to stay away from my usual sound and usual songwriting style with that. There's one song, maybe two, on the Unearthed Elf album where I allowed the Arctic Sleep influence to shine through, but otherwise I wanted it to be something separate.

00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:50.700
So everything recorded then was, there was no leftover music from Arctic Sleep then? This is all completely new stuff once you were laid up?

00:13:50.760 --> 00:14:20.740
Yeah, yeah, no, totally separate. I think it would be doing a disservice to, you know, to Arctic Sleep and to Mike and everything if I were to use those ideas for this project. So I made sure to keep them very separate. Okay, because I was thinking, I don't know if you listened to Fate's Warning at all, but Jim Mathios has a bunch of stuff that he had laying around that he was going to use in Fate's, and he ended up using it in a different project. And while it sort of sounds like Fate's a little bit, it just didn't work for Fate's. So he ran with it. That's why I was wondering if there was anything

00:14:20.980 --> 00:14:50.700
that you may have had left over or just some bits of ideas that you wanted to run with. Because I did hear a little bit of Arctic Sleep. And like you said, a couple of songs, just a touch, a sprinkling. Yeah, it's inevitable. And I was wondering if there was anything that you had that you just hadn't developed yet. No, I tried to make it something new, something different. But I guess it's impossible to avoid for it to, you know. George and I were saying earlier that we definitely think it's heavier than Arctic Sleep, which is cool. I love the riffage on there.

00:14:50.780 --> 00:14:56.640
that you kind of let it go and it sounds like you're having fun kind of doing that oh yeah which i think

00:14:56.800 --> 00:15:01.900
comes through that's that's what i'm digging about it so yeah it was it's it was supposed to be a fun

00:15:02.290 --> 00:15:08.920
album to listen to and to make and just everything about it that was kind of the the one word that i kept

00:15:09.300 --> 00:15:15.760
going on was was fun i want this to be fun to play fun to listen to fun to write you know so well but is that the

00:15:15.940 --> 00:15:19.459
attitude you're taking when you're sitting there laid up your knees all fucked up you're like i gotta make

00:15:19.480 --> 00:15:49.420
This is as fun as possible, man. Yeah, exactly. Were you maybe watching Lord of the Rings a lot at that time? I was on a lot of drugs. I'm not saying that had anything to do with it. Anytime you court fantasy themes, there's a risk of being a bit campy. You keep it pretty subtle most of the time, but Mortis called and he wants his ears back. Yeah, I thought of Mortis actually when I was doing this whole project.

00:15:49.500 --> 00:16:19.420
It kind of reminded me of that. I was like, well, you know, if that guy can get away with dressing like a goblin and everything, then I guess I can. Yeah, you didn't throw the nose in there or anything. So, I mean, what? Yeah. He's the love child of Mortis and what's his name? Orlando Bloom. Is that like Gilthanas or something? Lord of the Rings. I don't know if that's the right name. I've been reading a lot of Genesis. What is his name? I don't know. I'm drinking beer. Where did the name Unearthed Elf come from?

00:16:20.860 --> 00:16:49.000
A really long time ago. The galaxy far, far away, perhaps? Yes, yes. No, this was like, shit, early 2000s or something. I used to post on this message board on the internet. I'm going to sound like a real nerd now. Hey, you know, Buke is here. It's okay. You're a good company. I just threw out a Star Wars reference. You're a Legolas. Like the topic of shitty band names came up. 4chan doesn't make you a nerd, Keith. Okay?

00:16:49.460 --> 00:17:18.160
And somebody was like, oh, fuck, what did they say? Something along the lines of, you know, that's not a good metal band name. They should call it something like this or like this. And they said, on Earth Elf. And so I said, dude, can I use that? A long time ago. And they said, yeah, go for it. So now here I am like 15 years later using it, I guess, finally. Does the person who came up with the name know that there's a band name out there? No, no. I hope they find out, though.

00:17:19.220 --> 00:17:49.200
Yeah, let me tell you, my high school band name for one day was Rectal Itch. Please tell me you had a song called Preparation Itch. No, we were Rectal Itch one day. I'm checking right now if the Xbox Gamertag is available for that. That is awesome. Was it Gore Grind? No, dude, we were playing like Eric Clapton covers and David Bowie covers. We were just a garage band, you know? That makes sense. We were Frozen Penguin another day, you know? So, I mean...

00:17:49.240 --> 00:18:19.200
You kind of channel a little bit of King Diamond there for a couple of lines. Was that intentional? Yeah, you know, I originally had a lot of parts where I was going to do falsetto vocals a la King Diamond and Rob Halford. Use the matches! I can't do it. Use the matches! There you go. I eventually ended up just keeping it a little further back in the mix. I always loved, of course, this is a podcast, so they

00:18:19.220 --> 00:18:49.140
I can't see Keith, but I always love when we get bigger. He's a big, strong guy, and he has this deep voice. And I love when these big guys let out that. I love it. I absolutely love a good rock scream like that. It makes my heart warm. The first time I was listening to the album, I was on a treadmill at the gym. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Shut up. Shut up. That's appropriate. No one says the treadmill was going fast. What were you eating while you're on a treadmill at the gym?

00:18:50.360 --> 00:19:19.160
And was it G-I-M or J-G-Y-N? Anyway, so I'm there and I'm listening to the album. I'm like, cool, cool. And all of a sudden, that comes on. And I was just like, yes, that is awesome. Anyway, it was pretty cool. So you're saying you had a headbanging moment. I had a headbanging moment in public. Yes, that was the point. I did that on the Metro the other day. Yeah. I figured lifting weights would be more like 8-Breathe.

00:19:19.680 --> 00:19:48.800
Yes, Keith! Now I love this guy. It was my first opportunity to listen to it, and I couldn't wait any longer, so I had to do it. You gotta put on the hate breed when you're lifting weights. Exactly. So, Keith, I have to ask you, you look like a younger guy. You don't need to say your age at all, but I'm 33. You can be older, but just look young. Well, I appreciate that. What were your first introductory bands to metal? What was your metal gateway drug?

00:19:49.240 --> 00:20:15.800
For the record, I'm 38. Ah! Man, I'm so bad. In between. You're still a kid, trust me. And, you know, I gotta admit, my first experiences with heavy metal music were 80s stuff like Dawkins, Dio, Accept, things like that. You know, when I saw the video for Balls to the Wall when I was in second grade or whatever, that scarred me for life. And here I am.

00:20:19.240 --> 00:20:49.200
that? So clearly the PMRC back in the day was not protecting you from the evils of heavy metal. Oh god no. No. I was at the tender age of seven or whatever and I was just like all right leather and studs and shit I'm into it. So was there any particular artist or band that made you want to you know start playing music and what did you start on? Guitar? Yeah yeah man you know the the first time I heard

00:20:49.240 --> 00:21:18.880
Something that made me want to pick up an instrument was actually Money for Nothing by Dire Straits. That guitar riff. That's pretty sick. I used to grab a tennis racket when I was a little kid and pretend it was a guitar and do air guitar leaps off the couch and everything. Them and Van Halen were really big with me at a young age. You're in good company. I know I did the same thing with a guitar.

00:21:19.800 --> 00:21:20.560
Yeah, me too.

00:21:21.240 --> 00:21:27.560
That's interesting, because you don't hear many people talk about Mark Knopfler as kind of an influence early on, but he's a fabulous guitarist.

00:21:27.960 --> 00:21:28.240
Oh, yeah.

00:21:28.580 --> 00:21:31.100
Yeah, I mean, whether you like Dire Straits or not, the guy can play.

00:21:32.240 --> 00:21:36.920
That's a mean riff, too. That's like one of just the most classic guitar riffs there is.

00:21:36.990 --> 00:21:38.380
It's very recognizable.

00:21:38.760 --> 00:21:42.500
Yeah, especially when it's played like 19 times a day on MTV when you're a kid.

00:21:43.640 --> 00:21:45.120
I want my...

00:21:45.300 --> 00:21:46.220
Thanks, Sting.

00:21:47.540 --> 00:22:17.240
So I saw on Facebook recently that you, like myself, have a fear of flying. Oh, God, yeah. Well, you know, not so much anymore. I've kind of come to terms. That was sort of the point of the thing that I saw, yeah. I was wondering, you know, you were talking about how, you know, you're generally, in the past anyway, terrified at takeoff. And so I was wondering if you had any pre-flight rituals that helped you to, you know, get on the plane. Because for me, I have very strict,

00:22:17.540 --> 00:22:21.320
of what I do leading up to takeoff. Don't lie, George.

00:22:21.620 --> 00:22:23.360
It's you pop a bunch of pills, you drug yourself.

00:22:23.800 --> 00:22:23.960
Yes.

00:22:24.260 --> 00:22:25.420
I was going to explain that.

00:22:25.420 --> 00:22:30.760
I said my pre-flight ritual is a milligram of Xanax before I get to the airport,

00:22:31.140 --> 00:22:34.000
a milligram of Xanax while I'm waiting to board the plane.

00:22:34.300 --> 00:22:38.500
And then as soon as we take off and they'll give it to me, little bottles of alcohol.

00:22:39.100 --> 00:22:39.400
Yes.

00:22:39.680 --> 00:22:39.780
Yes.

00:22:40.340 --> 00:22:43.940
But also as we're, as soon as we take off the ground, I have to close my eyes,

00:22:44.400 --> 00:22:56.240
I clench my wife's hand and count to 120 because they say the first two minutes are when things usually happen. And then after two minutes, I kind of open my eyes and look around to see if we've leveled off yet. And so that's my ritual.

00:22:56.680 --> 00:23:14.360
No, you pretty much just described my exact experience. Most of the time I've been, you know, flying a lot more lately for work and stuff. And so I think like the more you do it, the more familiar it becomes. And then the easier it is to, to

00:23:14.920 --> 00:23:44.360
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, I, I only do it like once or twice a year, so I haven't really gotten over it yet, but, uh, it's getting better. So, you know, there's hope, I guess. Yeah. George, your, your fear of flying set me back a, how much money in beer just recently? I didn't want to fly to, uh, to, uh, Prague power back in September. And so, uh, we drove it, but, uh, I paid some gas and no, no, no, I'm talking about the beer. I'm not talking about the gas. Oh, you mean the beer that you had to buy because we were driving? Yeah. The beer was

00:23:44.400 --> 00:23:45.900
forced to buy to come home and drink.

00:23:46.520 --> 00:23:46.620
Yeah.

00:23:47.040 --> 00:23:48.280
I just finished my last one tonight.

00:23:48.460 --> 00:23:51.080
In fact, while I just, while we were talking here, that was my last one.

00:23:51.280 --> 00:23:54.220
Speaking of which, can we get to the, get the important matters at hand?

00:23:54.540 --> 00:23:54.740
Sure.

00:23:55.120 --> 00:23:55.280
Sure.

00:23:55.520 --> 00:23:56.620
Sounds like a good segue.

00:23:57.300 --> 00:23:57.560
All right.

00:23:57.640 --> 00:23:58.320
Well, segue away.

00:23:59.100 --> 00:23:59.320
Whoa.

00:23:59.700 --> 00:24:00.420
Seg me away.

00:24:01.440 --> 00:24:02.300
Heath, what are you drinking?

00:24:02.960 --> 00:24:08.260
Well, I just polished off a Alpine Beer Company Duet IPA.

00:24:08.740 --> 00:24:09.440
That's a nice beer.

00:24:09.620 --> 00:24:09.740
Yeah.

00:24:09.780 --> 00:24:11.580
I've never seen it before until today.

00:24:11.910 --> 00:24:14.060
So you are a good hand, sir.

00:24:14.260 --> 00:24:44.120
It was very tasty. I'm about to move on to an epic brewing company double IPA. Nice. I like this guy. Yeah. What do we have? Can you guys see this? Oh, the Abyss. Oh, the Abyss. Yeah, cognac version. Cognac. Bitches. Barrel-age Abyss. Yeah. That is not like the Catacomb Abyss. Yeah, really. You're into the Catacomb Abyss. Yes. The Abyss. We started off with some Headhunter IPA from Fat Heads. Cool. Duke, you got anything? Oh, since I'm boring at all,

00:24:44.260 --> 00:25:13.640
My Atkins diet, I'm not going to be drinking that many beers with you guys. But just a boring Oscar Blues hot box coffee porter. Cool. I've never even heard of that one yet. Oscar Blues? Really? I've never had that. How is it, Beauty? Is it good? It's okay. Not a strong real coffee flavor, but a nice strong porter coming through. Cool. I haven't even seen that yet. I'll look for that. Yeah. Well, when we started, I was finishing off the last of my Wicked Weed Medora, and now I'm working on another one of these exploding emergency drinking beers.

00:25:14.300 --> 00:25:44.100
George, I'm going to fucking buy you a case of that the next time I go down there. Go down there and be like, hey man, your stuff explodes. I actually saw a post on Facebook from them. They took a picture and they had the can sitting on a rock or something. And look at this. I mean, this is one of the ones that didn't blow up. Literally, of all the cans I've ever had in my life, you're the only person I've ever heard of that's had that problem. It's so freaky. It just exploded. Like four of the six exploded in the pantry. It's not hot, not cold. It's just, you know, air conditioned.

00:25:45.019 --> 00:26:14.100
So being a brewer that I am, my assumption is that there had some residual yeast and sugar left in there and it started re-fermenting back inside the can. Cans can't hold the pressure of bottle fermentation slash can fermentation. That's why no one does it in a can. So that's my assumption. Just the pressure built up because the CO2 built up from continuous fermentation in the can. Yeah. That's not an indictment of the brewery, though.

00:26:14.260 --> 00:26:43.840
because you like their stuff, right? Yeah, but maybe I'll save one of these and you can put a dead mouse in there. And when you go down there, you can be like, hey, my friend, he got this. There's precedence encoded in the law that say if there's a mouse in your beer, you get free beer. You know where I'm going with that? Or I'll just buy you some beer and bring it back. That's my strange brew. Come on. Because I may drive down again. I got it. I got it, George. Okay. All right. I'm sorry we cut you off. What were you about to say? I was about to say before we move on.

00:26:43.900 --> 00:27:13.540
I'm having a new Flying Dog Brewhouse Rarity there, Bee Beer. This is ale brewed with honey and bee pollen. And I can also proudly say I am snacking on beef jerky, sorry, venison jerky from my first deer that I shot and killed. So I feel like a real fucking man. That's metal. Fuck yeah. Have you run into any black metal bands while you're out in the woods killing animals? Not yet. Well, here's the more important question.

00:27:13.900 --> 00:27:43.840
Squatch is out there. Not yet. I haven't seen any Squatch lures yet. I haven't seen any. So be careful. You're based in Milwaukee. Did you ever make it to a Milwaukee Metal Fest? Oh, you know, they quit having those before I moved here. Okay. And yeah, I was kind of bummed, actually, because one of my favorite bands is Anathema, and I heard that they played one, you know, like a couple years before I moved here. But those kind of fell apart, I guess, something to do with the promoter or the fest.

00:27:44.680 --> 00:27:47.620
I guess didn't do it good enough or something.

00:27:47.850 --> 00:27:47.940
Right.

00:27:48.210 --> 00:27:48.300
Yeah.

00:27:48.370 --> 00:27:50.420
When I lived in Michigan, we used to hear about that.

00:27:50.430 --> 00:27:53.540
And that was one of those, hey, man, we ought to drive to Milwaukee and go to

00:27:53.650 --> 00:27:54.260
Metal Fest.

00:27:54.820 --> 00:27:56.080
And it never happened.

00:27:56.180 --> 00:27:56.880
And they moved away.

00:27:57.340 --> 00:28:00.240
I know they stopped doing them like 10 years ago or something like that.

00:28:00.290 --> 00:28:03.120
But does Milwaukee have much of a metal scene?

00:28:04.620 --> 00:28:06.320
You know, a little bit.

00:28:06.580 --> 00:28:08.640
I mean, there's beer where there's beer.

00:28:09.020 --> 00:28:10.240
You know, metal must congregate.

00:28:10.440 --> 00:28:40.360
I would say the prominent music genre in Milwaukee is kind of like garage punk is really popular here. There is a couple of venues that have metal bands play, but nothing, not a metal scene as good as in Baltimore and places like that. So there's no local bands you could recommend or anything? Oh, there sure is. Yeah, there's quite a few.

00:28:40.420 --> 00:29:00.160
Would you like to name a few? I do have some on my list. One of my favorite local metal bands that I follow is called Ukitaru. It's spelled U-H-C-E-A-T-A-B-I-B-I-B-I-B-I-B-I-B-I-B-

00:29:10.420 --> 00:29:40.180
Not normally much of a black metal guy, but their music is really complex and intelligent and just has kick-ass drumming and just top-notch musicianship. They're a kind of younger dude. Younger than me, anyway. And just really good band. So I kind of follow everything that their drummer does because he's in like five bands around here. One of my favorite bands was from Wisconsin, Lazarus AD. I just remembered that. They're from here? Yeah. Well, Wisconsin anyway, he said.

00:29:40.220 --> 00:30:09.960
Yeah. Not necessarily. No, not, not, yeah, not Mrs. Yeah. Okay. Or as Alice Cooper says in Wayne's world, me li wa ke. Yup. That is a great scene in that movie. Um, so do you ever play live? I know you probably haven't with Unearthed Elf, but does Arctic Sleep play live? Uh, haven't in about two years, man. Um, you know, I'm kind of becoming like a studio guy. My, my favorite thing to do is make albums. I love being in the studio and recording and,

00:30:10.660 --> 00:30:11.260
You know,

00:30:11.820 --> 00:30:13.180
Unearthed Elf is a solo album.

00:30:13.370 --> 00:30:13.780
It's like,

00:30:13.880 --> 00:30:16.700
how am I going to get people to be in this band with me?

00:30:16.960 --> 00:30:21.520
I had an ad up actually for a little while and nobody responded to it.

00:30:21.660 --> 00:30:22.100
So I was like,

00:30:22.140 --> 00:30:22.320
ah,

00:30:22.520 --> 00:30:22.660
fuck.

00:30:22.760 --> 00:30:23.660
But it's just,

00:30:23.780 --> 00:30:26.220
it's tough to get people to be in a band with you,

00:30:26.620 --> 00:30:26.820
you know,

00:30:26.940 --> 00:30:29.100
especially when you have kind of a,

00:30:29.540 --> 00:30:29.700
you know,

00:30:29.700 --> 00:30:30.960
a vision for it already.

00:30:31.300 --> 00:30:31.660
It's like,

00:30:31.720 --> 00:30:31.860
Hey,

00:30:31.980 --> 00:30:32.420
you want to,

00:30:32.760 --> 00:30:38.800
anybody out there want to play this epic fantasy power doom metal and dress up in costumes and shit.

00:30:39.560 --> 00:31:09.500
You're gonna have to grip them in ears, so yeah. Yeah, yeah. Reply to this number. Yeah, you don't exactly get a lot of interest. Ears not included. I have had actually a couple of old drummers that I worked that really liked music and were like, dude, I totally want to play this, but I don't know. I figure if the pieces of the puzzle fall where they do, then great, but if not, you know, I'm not gonna sit. Okay. So, what's the story with Arctic Sleep these days? Are you guys gonna do something?

00:31:10.620 --> 00:31:37.940
Who knows? It's kind of uncertain right now. Just not really sure what's going on there. But I definitely want to get more Arctic Sleep music out to the people that like it. In the time of year where we're at right now, that sounds like a very politician type answer. A very political answer. As soon as we post this, he's going to be like,

00:31:41.100 --> 00:32:08.660
We're going on tour for 40 days. Yeah. Yeah. That's, I feel like that's happened to us before. Yeah. What can I say? All right. Well, cool. You know, even if you keep doing Unearthed Elf, you know, that's fine by me anyway. I have to get this on record. Gauntlets of Volcanic Doom is an amazing track. Thanks, man. The epicness that I hear, and like I said, I made up the word there, epicness. Because I am the power metal. That's not the first word you made up. No, it's not. And it won't be the last. Yes.

00:32:09.560 --> 00:32:38.440
The reason why I love power metal is like, I know you're not really power metal, but the moments when your fist is pumping, and that's how this song was. The vocals I'm hearing in this, is that all sample tracks? In the album or in that song? In that song. Oh, yeah, there's no vocals in Gauntlets of Volcanic Doom. It's all organ. Organ, that was it. That was what I meant. Organ. Wow.

00:32:38.520 --> 00:33:08.400
Yeah, but all the parts in the album where you do hear vocals, there's no samples. I just did a whole bunch of layering. Like the chanting stuff. Yeah. That's awesome. I'm curious just about the album. In terms of the song order, was there a specific order to it? Because I'm really big on opening tracks and closing tracks. And both the opening and closing tracks on the album, I think, are perfect. I love ending tracks that kind of go this epic kind of, not bombastic,

00:33:08.520 --> 00:33:38.500
but they kind of lead you to the end of the album in a sense like that little fireworks at the end of the show yeah yes and you definitely kill it with the last song obviously but i'm just curious if you really kind of pinpointed how you wanted to do each song where it fell where it went yeah definitely that's uh that's good to hear actually that that you notice that because uh i i actually do put a whole lot of thought into the order of the songs in every album i make um that's always really important for me for the album to

00:33:38.500 --> 00:33:40.780
just flow really good as a whole.

00:33:41.100 --> 00:33:45.240
And for not to have too many songs that sound the same in a row,

00:33:45.380 --> 00:33:54.060
it should kind of take you on a ride and have a beginning and a middle and an end and little ups and downs and all that stuff.

00:33:54.170 --> 00:33:56.880
So yeah, I always put a lot of thought into the song order.

00:33:57.040 --> 00:33:59.720
You can tell. I mean, it flows really well.

00:33:59.880 --> 00:34:00.640
Yeah, I agree.

00:34:01.960 --> 00:34:06.800
I was going to say, because I always liked when you had an album that had a kick-ass opening track,

00:34:07.080 --> 00:34:37.060
And I always got annoyed when the next track was kind of slow. The second one, you're like, oh, man, fuck. We just killed it for five minutes. And I love when the next track, the second track just rips right back into it. So that's why I was asking. I'm really big on song order and kind of the mixing of high lows and the peaks and valleys of an album. Metallica was always really good. Not by when I say always, I mean through the first four albums or so. With having a killer closing track, you know, like Damage Incorporated and Call of Cthulhu and stuff like that.

00:34:37.100 --> 00:35:06.960
that. Oh, yeah. Dyer's Eve. Dyer's Eve, yeah. So, yeah, that's a very cool thing. Is there, like, a coughing epidemic going on right now? It's fall. Yeah, it's fall. And so I have allergies. We need more beer. Yeah, well, get off your ass and get something. So, we are nearing the end of the year. Do you have any favorite albums that you could, you know, throw at us? Who, me? Yeah, because we do, like, a year-end list where we do our top, I think usually it's, like,

00:35:07.100 --> 00:35:36.840
25 albums of the year. And, you know, we all pool our lists. And so is there anything that's really stood out to you this year? You know, I haven't bought like a whole ton of albums this year, but a couple that I've that I have picked up that I really enjoyed was the new the new My Wrath album. I forget if it's My Wrath or Me Wrath or whatever, but it's called Legacy. Yeah, I know the band and I always wondered the same thing. It's my My Wrath. Is it really? Legacy.

00:35:37.100 --> 00:36:07.060
Yeah, yeah. Makes sense. I always thought it was Mirat, but who knows. But yeah, I really enjoyed that album. I'm really into discovering heavy metal from other parts of the world, especially parts of the world that are not really familiar to me. So it's really cool. So Keith, what are you saying? Tunisia isn't a metal haven? Oh, not exactly. Yeah, but it's one of the cool things about heavy metal music that comes from everywhere in the world, and you can always hear that influence of where it comes from.

00:36:07.660 --> 00:36:35.380
I really dig a lot of that Middle Eastern metal. I believe they're playing Prog Power next year. John can probably confirm that if he comes back. He's getting a spear. I completely know what you're talking about because there's a band I mentioned earlier on an episode, four or five episodes ago, called Silence Lies Fear. They're from Azerbaijan. It just blew me away. Where's that? I don't know.

00:36:35.460 --> 00:37:05.160
That's like former Soviet Union, isn't it? Yeah. One of the last places I expect there to be battles. Azerbaijan is a country in the Caucasus. In what? Thank you. In the Caucasus. Whose Caucasus? Yo, what'd you call me? That's like from Boston. You're Caucasus. They hate Armenians, okay? You're Azerbaijani, you hate Armenians. Yeah, that's what my... This whole thing called Nagorno-Karneba, I don't know, it's the whole international... It's a local thing. Yeah, yeah. Look at Mr. Encyclopedia over here. It's a local thing you wouldn't understand.

00:37:05.440 --> 00:37:34.960
Yeah. That college education I have coming out. So I'm just about out of questions. I don't know if anybody else has anything else. Anything elf. Oh, man. I'm funny. But the last thing I do want to drag out of you before we continue is where can people find your music? It's at unearthelf.bandcamp.com or you can just go to unearthelf.com and there's all sorts of fun things to look at and read.

00:37:35.000 --> 00:38:04.600
on there. Excellent. So check it out. The album comes out officially on Halloween, but I'll probably release it tomorrow and it'll be available to stream if you like to listen before you buy or just listen for free or whatever. Yeah. For those. So for those people listening after the fact, because this will probably post after Halloween, that'll be October 29th. All right. So it's in the past now, if you're listening now, check it out. Yeah. It takes about a week to post. You should check it out because I,

00:38:05.020 --> 00:38:21.100
I like the album a lot. I think it's really good. So thank you. Might be on my list. You never know. Just saying. Just saying. Yeah. All right. Well, why don't we move on? Keith is going to join us for the rest of the episode. So we are pleased to have that. Why don't we get into the news?

00:38:35.020 --> 00:39:04.060
I just wanted to give a shout out to our friend Trevor and Ashton Horde who had some unexpected publicity the other day. There was a paparazzi photo of Ashton Kutcher and his pregnant wife Mila Kunis. I assume they're married. I think they're married. Aren't they married? Yeah, I have no idea. Anyway. George, this isn't fucking in your table tonight. Doesn't matter. This isn't TMZ, right? The fact is that somebody from TMZ or elsewhere, the paparazzi, were snapping pictures of them while they were out at the grocery store.

00:39:05.020 --> 00:39:34.960
The background of the photo of them at the store is Trevor. So you photobombed them. He photobombed them, essentially. But how did you find out? Were you looking on? It's funny because I... George was on Google Magazine. Let's look at this. Trevor posted it on his Facebook. Okay. George was watching his programs and he came on. Yeah. No, well, it's funny because it was in my Facebook feed. My wife watches that stuff. I don't watch that stuff. It was in my Facebook feed. Somebody, you know, it was like,

00:39:35.020 --> 00:40:03.880
like an advertisement or something. And I just flipped by it and didn't really look at it. And then I saw Trevor commenting on it. And I was like, why is he commenting on this? And it's because he's in the picture. And I picked him out right away. He's wearing a band shirt and everything. And I was like, that's pretty awesome. So I just wanted to give a shout out to Trevor. I thought that was pretty cool. So we all know how much I love the band Gwar. And I love trying to do all I can to support them. And I've backed a couple Kickstarter projects.

00:40:04.260 --> 00:40:33.940
And we've mentioned other bands like Trevor, for example. Passion Horde had their vinyl successfully funded on Kickstarter. GWAR right now has a Kickstarter campaign going for GWAR Orgasmageddon, the Scum Dogs Conquer Comics. That's awesome. Here it says, Metal Shock Rock Legends GWAR Wreck Havoc Through Time Shape Human History and Kill Everything in a new full-color comic series. So it just started the other day. I funded at the $15,000

00:40:34.560 --> 00:41:03.700
I'm going to get a signed issue number one spread signed by the band. It'll go above my shirt covered in guar blood. I was hoping you were going to say it's going to go above your bed. I wanted to mention this because any band, metal band doing kickstart stuff is pretty cool. But this one more so because the artist actually, correct me if I'm wrong after hearing this, I believe it is Buzzsaw, one of the guys on stage with them, the green guy who cuts them up.

00:41:03.960 --> 00:41:06.300
is the artist. And there are some awesome

00:41:06.800 --> 00:41:08.160
backer rewards for this.

00:41:08.740 --> 00:41:10.500
Matt Minor is going to be the artist

00:41:10.680 --> 00:41:11.360
on this. So

00:41:12.340 --> 00:41:14.340
check out the project and give him

00:41:14.340 --> 00:41:16.240
a back. I'll definitely check it out because

00:41:16.440 --> 00:41:18.540
one of the last Kickstarter campaigns was

00:41:18.740 --> 00:41:20.460
for the Guar Bar, which I've been to in

00:41:20.660 --> 00:41:22.100
Richmond, motherfucking Virginia.

00:41:22.420 --> 00:41:23.780
So I'll check it out.

00:41:24.380 --> 00:41:25.520
I just posted it.

00:41:25.970 --> 00:41:28.360
The rewards go up to hundreds of dollars

00:41:28.530 --> 00:41:30.680
and you can get actual onstage

00:41:31.060 --> 00:41:32.480
props signed by the band

00:41:32.500 --> 00:42:02.060
and stuff like that. So it looks like right now it's going to be a run of five comics and it could be something more. So with with 20 with 27 days left, they already raised 27,000 of a 39,000 goal. So, wow. Can we have a Metalheads podcast Kickstarter campaign like to to do what? I don't know. Liposuction, maybe or penis enlargements or something. I don't know.

00:42:02.160 --> 00:42:32.120
More beer! You know, Buke reminded me when he was talking about the Ashen Horde vinyl. I meant to ask you, Keith, do you do vinyl at all? And would you release anything on vinyl? Well, I have. When it says do you do vinyl, do you put your albums out on vinyl? Well, I mean, but do you also, do you like collect it or anything? You know, I'm not much of a vinyl collector. I've always been a CD guy. I have a massive CD collection, but the only, you know, vinyl is

00:42:32.140 --> 00:43:02.120
It's really expensive to get it made. It's really fucking expensive. So you have to have the fan support there or label support or whatever to make it. For Kickstarter. Yeah, that was the only way we were able to do it. The Arctic Sleep Vinyl, which is our album Passage of Gaia. Which I have. Duh. Yeah. Forgot about that. The only way we were able to do that was with support from our fan base. So we ran a Kickstarter and were able to

00:43:02.200 --> 00:43:32.120
produced that record on vinyl. Awesome. Keith, as someone who's used Kickstarter, is the back-end stuff dealing with Kickstarter pretty easy to deal with? Yeah, I mean, you know, like anything, they take their cut. Amazon, you have to kind of make a deal with the devil with Amazon. You know, they're kind of an evil company and everything. And then the credit card company takes their cut of it and everything. So do you have to set your goal, what you want to make to a

00:43:32.160 --> 00:44:01.000
for all those fees and stuff? Yeah, and you also have to incorporate into their, you know, the cost for shipping and packaging and all of that stuff, too. Okay. Jeez. But, yeah, it's been successful for Arctic Sleep on a couple times, a couple occasions. Cool. Well, if you want to make some unearthed elf vinyl, I'll kickstart that. Cool. Yeah, you and the other eight people will... It'll get there. It'll get there. We'll raise 80 bucks.

00:44:02.140 --> 00:44:31.940
You'll get 90 bucks. Trust me, there's a 90. I'm in. All right. All right, moving on. Will, you had some stuff you wanted to add? Yeah, yeah. So one more news item to throw in there. This is an extra that we added. But to piggyback on Buke's story, Guar is actually going to play the Howard Stern wrap-up show. So I'm a big Howard Stern fan. I've been listening to him since he went to Philadelphia. Fuck Howard Stern. Hope he and Anthony all the way. Okay. Anyway,

00:44:32.140 --> 00:45:02.080
So they're actually going to play live on the Howard Stern wrap-up show, which is the show that comes on right after the Howard Stern show. So I thought that was pretty cool. I'm pretty excited to listen to that on Sirius XM radio. Sweet. All right, moving on. Steve Harris says that Iron Maiden will never make bands pay to support them on tour. You hear about that a lot these days about, you know, particularly like Ozzy Osbourne and anything having to do with Sharon Osbourne. Bands having to play, excuse me, pay.

00:45:02.160 --> 00:45:30.900
to play. Seriously? Opening for headlining bands. OzFest is ridiculous how much bands have to pay to be on the main stage for OzFest. That's fucking bullshit. If you look, if you know the history of Iron Maiden and OzFest and Sharon Osbourne, I felt like Steve Harris giving this interview was giving a double guns fuck you to Sharon Osbourne the entire interview. It was awesome. The only thing, and I'm glad he said this, but I'll only make one point here.

00:45:30.980 --> 00:46:00.860
And that would be kind of a dick move to charge his daughter to play live before their shows. That's all. But with that said, I think it's a cool thing that he did come out and say that. One more reason Iron Maiden is awesome. You're hearing more and more about that bands have to pay now to get on tour, which is fuck that. I think didn't Jax used to do that a lot too. They did some bullshit like that. Yeah. Like a lot of local shows at Jax. So Jax, Empire Nova, the local place here in Northern Virginia used to do that a lot. And it was always the same bands always opening.

00:46:00.980 --> 00:46:30.900
and those support slots. Yeah, because they're the ones that could get in there. So, yeah. Speaking of Iron Maiden, apparently there's going to be lullaby renditions of Iron Maiden songs coming next month in November. You going to get some of those for Brie? We have been playing classical radio since Brie was a little baby in her room. So if this could be a way to start to turn her into my little metalhead. I don't know. Will is my inspiration because Will posts pictures and sends me pictures.

00:46:30.960 --> 00:47:00.120
of his son throwing the horns all the time. And Brie is, you know, two years old now, but Brie's at the point now where I'm like, hey, Brie, she hears daddy's music and her way of headbanging is like a mental patient left to right in her car seat, banging her head. So she has some work to go. So if these can help me, you know, I would just jump on board because you know what, George, the first thing I thought of, what was that maiden cover band that came out that did those gentler, softer songs that we freaking love?

00:47:00.140 --> 00:47:02.660
That was Maiden United

00:47:02.960 --> 00:47:03.600
Maiden United

00:47:03.830 --> 00:47:03.960
Yes

00:47:04.440 --> 00:47:04.900
Oh man

00:47:05.040 --> 00:47:07.440
They did like acoustic versions of Iron Maiden songs

00:47:07.590 --> 00:47:08.040
It was brilliant

00:47:08.200 --> 00:47:09.560
It was like the dude from like

00:47:09.820 --> 00:47:10.660
I don't remember what band

00:47:10.660 --> 00:47:12.020
It was like a power metal band or something

00:47:12.170 --> 00:47:12.700
I can't remember

00:47:12.700 --> 00:47:13.800
So if it's anything like that

00:47:13.900 --> 00:47:14.520
Even softer

00:47:14.620 --> 00:47:15.140
That would be awesome

00:47:15.380 --> 00:47:16.020
So this is

00:47:16.160 --> 00:47:17.060
I don't have any kids

00:47:17.090 --> 00:47:18.520
But this is just kind of tripping me out

00:47:18.600 --> 00:47:19.200
Can you imagine that

00:47:19.280 --> 00:47:20.040
You're just laying there

00:47:20.120 --> 00:47:21.020
It's like 8 o'clock

00:47:21.070 --> 00:47:21.640
You're getting ready

00:47:21.640 --> 00:47:22.600
You just did bath time

00:47:22.780 --> 00:47:23.880
And you're singing to your daughter

00:47:24.120 --> 00:47:24.260
You know

00:47:24.380 --> 00:47:25.360
You take my life

00:47:25.600 --> 00:47:26.560
But I'll take yours too

00:47:27.500 --> 00:47:28.200
You fly a musket

00:47:28.250 --> 00:47:29.440
But I'll run you through

00:47:29.460 --> 00:47:58.260
And I'll run you through. So I do have some context to this. I feel as the father of two young children. One, someone did gift me the Metallica lullaby thing. So it's no lyrics. It's all instrumental. And they basically just take the song, slow it down a lot, and just play it with cellos and violins and all that stuff. So it's children's music is what you're saying. Yeah, it's apocalyptica.

00:47:59.220 --> 00:48:22.840
It's apocalyptic, but it's literally just like it sounds like sleepy time music. That's the first thing I have to say. The second thing I have to say is that I don't know why any metalhead father would waste their time buying lullaby albums when just playing the real stuff. And that's what I've done since day one. No coddling them. Just put them right on the horse. Is this a Jim Brewer project? No, no.

00:48:28.280 --> 00:48:58.240
And at night, you ask either one of my kids what their favorite band right now is Black Sabbath. And they love the song Fairies Wear Boots. My kids have grown up on Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, anything that Sirius XM, Liquid Metal, or Ozzy's Boneyard. My kids have grown up listening to nothing but metal. They have no idea who the fuck Katy Perry is. We'll be waiting for the lullaby version of Cannibal Corpse then. It's only a matter.

00:48:58.300 --> 00:48:58.720
of time.

00:48:59.880 --> 00:49:00.920
That would be something to hear.

00:49:01.000 --> 00:49:02.760
I'm curious to see what that sounds like.

00:49:02.980 --> 00:49:04.340
Rattle smashed face.

00:49:06.000 --> 00:49:06.760
Oh, George!

00:49:07.280 --> 00:49:09.140
That was actually really good.

00:49:09.420 --> 00:49:11.440
I don't want that to go get past.

00:49:11.860 --> 00:49:13.400
That was actually really good.

00:49:13.640 --> 00:49:16.240
Meanwhile, middle America, there's all these middle school teachers.

00:49:16.500 --> 00:49:19.280
Their eyes are just popping out of their heads when they hear about this.

00:49:19.760 --> 00:49:20.540
You're saying what?

00:49:21.120 --> 00:49:22.140
You're saying what with your parents?

00:49:23.120 --> 00:49:25.240
George, we need to get a shirt made up of that.

00:49:25.300 --> 00:49:55.220
Some baby smashing somebody's face with a rattle. Rattle smash face. Rattle smash face. That's pretty good. Anyway. So on Halloween, after you pick up the Unearthed Elf album, you're going to be able to check out yet another third song from the forthcoming Metallica album. This one's called Atlas Rise. I've liked both of the songs they've released so far, but I'm kind of wishing I'd gone the buker route on this one of going dark.

00:49:55.300 --> 00:50:25.260
because I'm not used to hearing stuff from Metallica before the album comes out. I'm used to like all in one sitting getting everything. Well, that's a good question. Maybe Keith, you can answer this. Is this the new way things are happening now with releasing music? Do you have to throw a song out a month early, then two weeks later, throw a second song out to get people pull them in? Because you're right, George, Metallica doesn't have to do this. Fuck that. They're Metallica. Whether people like it or not, it just comes out on this day. Buy it then. But it seems like they're kind of

00:50:25.280 --> 00:50:31.220
in this new world of releasing music long before it's going to be officially released by the record label.

00:50:31.440 --> 00:50:49.300
It's funny. I got an email from Metallica today, or other people anyway, about my pre-order. I got the triple vinyl pre-order, and they were just letting me know that the album comes out on the 18th, and we're going to start charging and shipping them soon, so keep an eye out for it. I'm like, well, that was kind of neighborly of you.

00:50:49.500 --> 00:50:51.960
Well, Keith, do you find that that's what is happening now?

00:50:52.240 --> 00:51:14.820
Yeah, definitely. I mean, especially in the internet age of music and everything, I think it's a good hype-building tool to leak a song here and there. It helps get people talking, and especially with a band like Metallica, where there's constantly going to be people arguing on the internet about them. It's a good hype-building tool for them to toss a bone out there.

00:51:16.840 --> 00:51:19.720
Yeah, any press is good press. I'll argue on the podcast.

00:51:20.140 --> 00:51:50.080
Yeah. We put a single out there and get people stoked about it and get them pre-ordering the album because that's another thing that's kind of new is people pre-order albums a lot nowadays. So you got to give them a reason to pre-order it, I guess. Yeah. What was I going to say? I lost my thought. I will jump in. My two cents is that I find that lately I'm against the releasing of, as a music band,

00:51:50.140 --> 00:52:20.120
of a listening fan, not somebody in the band, obviously. I feel like if you listen to, like, they've already released two songs. Now this is going to be the third song before the album's released, is that you get tired of listening to those songs already. And that you, I just wish I would just hear the whole album in the order that they present it to you. Because I know as soon as what's going to happen is that I pre-ordered Metallica against my own better judgment. I pre-ordered it and that I'm going to skip through the songs that they

00:52:20.160 --> 00:52:50.120
They've already released. I'm not going to hear the album as it's intended. Good point. And this happens with every big band that does this. Iron Maiden. Yeah, Iron Maiden. I hated Book of Souls. That's a good point, but you have the choice. A lot of the times, I'll choose to not listen to a track ahead of time. That is me. Way more disciplined than me. I am taking these new Metallica songs like I take any

00:52:50.140 --> 00:53:19.960
Star Wars movie. Completely in the dark. I have not heard any of them. Just like with the new Star Wars trailers, I don't watch any of the teaser trailers. Yeah, me neither. I want to go in the dark, into the whole experience. Just hanging out in the catacomb abyss until it comes out. I look at it a little differently in terms of trailers for movies. I grew up on trailers back in the late 70s, early 80s, so I'm always looking forward for a trailer. But it seems to me that bands that are releasing a song or two, the power is in their hands.

00:53:20.160 --> 00:53:50.080
as opposed to their promo getting out to a few people. Then all of a sudden now every fucking jack-off in the world, or Pittsburghese jag-off, has the promo and they're posting it online. It seems to me there's more power in releasing songs by bands now. So I agree, Will. I don't like hearing an umpteen number of songs, but one or two maybe is not bad from an album that get me stoked to buy it. So that's just my... So Keith, we've gone on ad nauseum on this podcast about what each of us thinks of Metallica. What's your stand on Metallica? And have you listened to any of these new songs?

00:53:50.160 --> 00:54:20.120
I love old Metallica and Justice For All. It was a life changing album for me. It's still one of my top 10 favorite metal albums of all time. What's your favorite song on the album? Oh, you know, I'm just gonna I'm just gonna say it's one. That was the that was the song that got me into Metallica, you know, when I was a little kid and I used to call in and request the radio stations to play it and everything. That was the song that got me into them. You know, it's a

00:54:20.380 --> 00:54:50.080
It's a really musical song. It's well-written. It's got really memorable riffs. And, you know, what drummer out there, you know, doesn't owe something to... I think that's the first praise of Lars we've had. He's... You gotta... I don't know. I think Lars gets beat up too much, man. I agree. Every metal drummer out there, whether they want to admit it or not, you know, owes something to that drumby.

00:54:50.140 --> 00:55:19.940
For a lot of us, that was the first time we ever heard a double bass drum riff like that. Keith, you just said something. I don't know if anyone realized what you just said, but you just said, when I used to call into the radio station. I'm by far the oldest person here, and I remember... He's being real. By far. Not that far. A couple years. Yes, that was... Don't take this the wrong way at all. I don't know if that means anything.

00:55:20.160 --> 00:55:49.900
When we were kids, we used to call into the radio station. It was fucking awesome. If they picked up and said, ARQR, what do you got for me? You're like, fuck, and you'd hang up because you got nervous, you know? And then you'd sit there and you'd wait for them to play your song. And you would just, when they finally did, you'd be like, yes, I did that. And then if they mentioned your name, dude just called in because of the song we're going to play for them. You're like, I'm the fucking greatest person for the next three minutes. And when all those assholes didn't pick up on our radio, the radio shows, I was like, fuck you, we got a podcast.

00:55:52.720 --> 00:56:18.840
I'm a huge fan of radio. I love telestial radio. It's such a dying art, unfortunately, but people who love it, really, it just means so much to them. And so I'm glad you brought that up. It made me feel old, but it made me feel good. So thank you. No, the magic music makes your morning mood. Yeah. Wait a minute. I think I heard that on the morning drive the other day. So this next item is one that Will keeps alluding to.

00:56:20.140 --> 00:56:49.640
So apparently this couple was out in the woods during the full moon to get some engagement photos taken. And who did they run into but a group of black metal musicians from the band Cold Void who were out there shooting pictures for their forthcoming album. Was that real? It was real. I'm trying to crack it up because we can't make this shit up. And so the couple who... I thought that was an Onion article. God, I hope not. I don't know. It made... I don't know. I'll have to double check that.

00:56:49.680 --> 00:57:19.660
I swear it was in some like regular news though like on blabbermouth and stuff. I think it made Yahoo news like this was like a big thing. Yeah I saw it in regular news. Yeah but uh so assuming it was real. I'm kind of surprised they didn't get lost. That's only in Finland. The park range is out there. Right we don't have any forests in America you're right. Yeah but uh so apparently the couple had a pretty good sense of humor and they asked the band to take some pictures with them so they're they're all made up for their engagement photos and like looking at each

00:57:19.680 --> 00:57:49.660
other fondly while in the background guys are like making the skull face and the fist and throwing their whores holding a sword and a candelabra yeah that's pretty cool good for them that's awesome that's beautiful that's beautiful i hope that's that that is the best thing that ever happened to cold void by the way yeah you know the only the only way this story would have been better is if they were in a cemetery and keith was taking pictures oh god there's a three-way like oh hey yeah can you feel the

00:57:49.680 --> 00:58:18.060
Because now, you know what, Keith would have ended up on some urban legend of the elf of Middleton or something. Cold Void summoned the elf. You would wonder, you're like, man, I am fucking playing 5,000 seat venues and all I did was show up at a fucking, I had ears on, I was drinking and I was at a cemetery. So I got drunk one night and decided to put ears on and go to a cemetery. Look what happened to me now.

00:58:21.840 --> 00:58:49.120
So there was another article where Scott Ian said that Anthrax should have given... Too much beer. Try this again. Scott Ian from Anthrax was doing an interview and he mentioned that Anthrax should have given Joey a shot before firing him back in the day. And reading the article, it sounds like... I kind of guessed this at the time, but the 90s were happening, grunge was happening, alternative was happening, and they felt like Joey had too much of an 80s voice.

00:58:49.220 --> 00:59:19.200
And so they wanted to go in more of a trendy direction. And that was basically why they canned him. What I found really confusing about this article, and I read it, is that, one, it was Scott Ian saying, I write the lyrics, and I don't want anyone else singing the lyrics. Yeah, so how does that make sense? Yeah, so I can't sing, but I don't want this guy singing my lyrics, so they fire him. And then they said that they wanted to go into a heavier direction, which I found very odd because in the 90s, Anthrax under

00:59:19.220 --> 00:59:49.080
under Bush, the singer Bush, John Bush, totally did not go in a heavier direction. And so this whole thing just very confused me. One, that he fired him because he didn't want him to sing his songs, but he couldn't sing. They hired some other guys to sing the songs that he couldn't sing because he wanted to be heavier and it didn't get heavier. It made absolutely no sense to me. Why is this even coming up? In my opinion, they should have fired Scott Ian at this point. I guess for me, why even bring this up now? I mean, unless he was asked this question, I don't see the point.

01:00:20.960 --> 01:00:49.100
Phil Anselmo thing really kind of dampened my enthusiasm for Machine Head. Oh, you read that Decibel article, didn't you? Did you read that? Which? Phil had that long thing in Decibel. Did you read that at all? He was like the picture. Did you read it? Yeah, I read it. All I have to say is, my problem with Rob Flynn, everyone's giving him praise when he came out. He said, we've known this for years. If you've known it for years, then why did you not say anything for years? I'm not defending Phil, but I'll tell you what, after reading that article? No, I took it.

01:00:50.020 --> 01:01:19.140
If you read that article, Phil Anselmo's an asshole. Well, yeah, I'm not saying he's not. That's a given. I'm not saying that. But that doesn't... I don't think Rob Flynn did anything wrong. I think Rob Flynn's a fucking bogus, phony-ass bitch is what I think. I feel like he was just a little pretentious. I'll take that bogey, phony-ass bitch to what? You know why? So why didn't he say anything about the Confederate flags all over the guitars? I mean, no one says anything about that. You can't touch that. Fuck him. Sorry. Rob Flynn pisses me off.

01:01:19.220 --> 01:01:49.100
I will shot beer out my nose. All right, well, moving on to something a little more funny. There's a new sock puppet parody video out of white zombies. More human than human goes by the title of more humid than humid. I don't know if you've ever seen these sock puppet parodies, but they're pretty damn funny. And this one's no exception, even though they're doing white zombie. So check that out. Funny to do it. All right. Next item creators getting ready to release the new album. Gods of violence in January. I for one cannot wait. Yeah, I'm looking forward to this. Creators easily.

01:01:49.220 --> 01:02:19.200
Probably one of my top five bands ever. I love these guys. Especially the last few albums are just un-fucking-believable to me. It's been sort of a renaissance for them. Yeah. Now, I'm not a creator fan. Did they have a period where they dropped off? Yeah, like every band in the 90s, they kind of dropped off. It's funny. Renewal? Yeah, Renewal, Outcast, we're sort of like... Andorama. But I like those albums, too. I mean, I get why people don't, because it's so different, but I really like them for what they are. If you take them individually and say, oh, hey, this is not creator, this is just a

01:02:45.060 --> 01:02:48.840
I just cannot wait to see what they do on Gods of Islands.

01:02:49.240 --> 01:03:17.280
Yeah, that's a cool title. Also getting ready to release a new album next year. We don't have a date on that yet, but the Reunited Original Exciter, who we just saw at Maryland Death Fest this year, are getting ready to release a new album. And I'm definitely looking forward to that. I mean, you know, I realize there's probably going to be a cheese factor here, but hopefully it'll be something awesome. Hey, did you also see the news? Well, the band you were most excited for when we interviewed, Atrophy? Yep.

01:03:19.240 --> 01:03:47.800
in the studio, they're going to be releasing new music. Awesome. And I hope it sounds like 80s thrash. It's all, 80s, 90s thrash. It's all I'm hoping for. It's all I want. I think you're going to be in good luck because it seems like there's an 80s revival right now in music. Yeah, there's a lot of bands reforming. With a current sound flair to it. There's a lot of bands that are kind of hearkening back to that style, but with a modern sound, and I'm loving it. Keith is so happy you just said that. Yeah. You can't hear him, but he's in the background shaking his head up and down, giving thumbs up.

01:03:49.220 --> 01:04:18.880
We've talked about that band, like that band Summerlands. That's a band that's kind of harkening to the late 80s sound. I'm loving all these bands doing that. Eternal Champion, wasn't that another one? Eternal Champion's the other one that's got an 80s flair to it, yeah. Enforcer. Enforcer, yeah, they're cool too. Yes. Cauldron. Love that band, yeah. So another new album on the way, Life of Agony released a teaser for their next album. I think a lot of people are wondering where this is going to go.

01:04:18.920 --> 01:04:48.480
The Teaser sounded hopeful to me. It didn't sound as heavy as, you know, The Good Old Days, River Runs Red. But it didn't sound bad like their last album either. So I guess we'll wait and see what happens with that. You know, Keith, I have to say when I was listening to Unearthed Elf, there's a couple, I shouldn't say a couple, there's a lot of parts to me that reminded me of Life of Agony. Really? Yeah, whether it's the vocal styles or like early Life of Agony. I only have one of their albums,

01:04:48.600 --> 01:05:18.460
It was probably their first album. I don't remember what it's called. Yeah. And there was elements of, I think, your vocal styles that kind of just remind me whether it was the tone or something like that. But there was some Life of Agony that kind of came out to me. No kidding. You know, I've actually never listened to them. I'll have to check it out. Yeah. It's it was like you say oats like that Wisconsin accent coming out. I think it's rubbing off on me a little bit. Yeah. Where were you before Milwaukee? In Illinois. OK, so still Midwest. Yeah. Yeah. I pick up all.

01:05:18.580 --> 01:05:48.560
I'm really into accents. I think they're fascinating and I have friends from all over and I pick up all their accents and kind of use them here and there. Apparently my Michigan accent has worn off. Thank God. There's a Michigan accent. Yeah. Yeah. Well, it's just a general sort of Midwest thing. I know there's a UP accent. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, my wife, I never knew there was. But then when my wife was, you know, we'd see friends from Michigan and she'd be like, boy, they have an accent. And she's like, you still have a little bit of one. And I was like, what are you talking about?

01:05:50.260 --> 01:06:17.280
It's subtle, but I guess it's there. I can't really hear it most of the time. So, uh, Fabio has left Rhapsody of Fire. So, so my question is, are we going to have a three-way Rhapsody split now? Is there going to be Fabio Leone's Rhapsody? Or, uh, we're going to have, you know, Luca Torelli's Rhapsody, Rhapsody of Fire, and Fabio Leone's Rhapsody of Rhapsody. I don't know. All the above. I haven't listened to him since the split. It just kind of soured me down. Yeah, me neither.

01:06:17.600 --> 01:06:46.340
Power of the Dragon Flame. That was the last good thing, I think. Ah, well. Anyway, so this last news item I put on here for Jay, and Jay's not here. So basically UFO announced a tour with Saxon, and that's going to happen. They're not coming around here, so screw them. Not going to go see them if they're not coming around here. I do have one news item I'd like to add is that Sick of It All has a new song out called Black Venom. They have a lyric video out on YouTube or whatever, but it's definitely an anti-Trump song.

01:06:46.380 --> 01:07:16.360
And I love Sick of It All. One of my true loves back in the whole hardcore. That was in the late 80s when Blood, Sweat, and Tears came out. I'm not a political person. This is clearly a shot at Donald Trump. This whole song that they have if you watch the lyric video. But regardless of the lyrics or their political stance, it's a good song. Have you seen the Bergeria stuff with the decapitated Donald Trump stuff? Yeah, yeah. That's crazy. To get out there and vote, people. I don't know if this is going to be... I would assume this...

01:07:37.820 --> 01:07:39.860
This week's new releases

01:07:46.060 --> 01:08:10.000
I'm hoping that John's gonna take this first one off my hands because I haven't really listened to it yet but the new Alcest album Kodama you listen to that John? I have listened to it yes and I'm interested to see what some of our friends like Nutriona think about this and Galen I like it I think it's maybe not a hundred percent harken back to their earlier period where they're most known for but it's

01:08:10.040 --> 01:08:38.040
It's got some nice, I need to use the word black gaze, I guess that's a genre now. A sub-sub-sub-genre. What'd you say? Black gaze. Like shoe gaze. Yes. What you said is totally not what... Yeah, I said black gaze. Wait, what? I know what you're hearing there. Sorry. Let's face it, it sounds like you said black gaze. They're two different things.

01:08:40.040 --> 01:09:09.799
And they're both fine. Yeah. Trust me. That's the way it's spelled and that's the way it sounds. I never thought about that before. Thanks, Will. Yeah, neither did I. It never crossed my mind. Sorry, I'll admit I was half paying attention. I don't really listen to Al Cesar ever. I was trying to check in on Untappd what John just did and then I just heard all the corner of my head. Black, G-A-Z-E, black gaze. Color shoe black. Yes, jeez. Like black metal and shoegaze mixed.

01:09:10.040 --> 01:09:39.359
Yeah, I thought so too. Fucking great band. I like them a lot.

01:09:40.040 --> 01:10:09.960
Keith, have you heard the new album at all? No, no. Like we were talking about earlier, I'm waiting to get the CD in my hands so I can play it on a proper stereo. I think it's a nice combination of the newer and older stuff. I like it, though. Cool, cool. If you like that sound, that kind of black metal shoegaze sound, it's there, and it's still, they're progressing forward with their current direction, so. I like their melodic songs. I like it all, yeah, definitely. This next one's a little bit more my speed. I finally checked this out this morning, the new Annalna Throne.

01:10:10.040 --> 01:10:38.320
the whole of the law. Holy shit, what a brutal album. Buke was like, man, it's too brutal, man, it's too brutal. No, it's a, words just cannot, you know, when you hear these guys, all their albums, just seconds into it, just a wall of fucking screams is like, wham, wham, wham, wham, wham. Yeah, it's, and yet they still have those like melodic choruses. After like a minute, you're like, wham, you're like my daughter headbanging in a car, left right gabs to your face.

01:10:38.700 --> 01:10:40.180
I was trying to sell this.

01:10:40.430 --> 01:10:43.140
If these clean vocals hit you in the face, you can be like,

01:10:44.260 --> 01:10:45.960
and then bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam.

01:10:46.680 --> 01:10:49.160
I was trying to sell this to one of my coworkers today.

01:10:49.580 --> 01:10:50.100
What up, Andrew?

01:10:51.400 --> 01:10:58.660
And I was like, it's kind of like if the Borg assimilated Bolt Thrower and Devin Townsend and made music together.

01:11:00.720 --> 01:11:02.200
George just dropped a Star Trek reference.

01:11:03.200 --> 01:11:03.520
Nerd alert.

01:11:04.100 --> 01:11:04.940
Nerd alert.

01:11:05.540 --> 01:11:35.380
If you like your metal, brutal, and extreme, you have to check this album out. It's awesome. It was definitely better than I expected. I think, George, you and I were both in agreement. We loved their first one. Their second one, we couldn't have put our finger on it. Kind of missed the mark a little bit. Actually, they've got like, I don't know, like five or six albums out. But their last album, yeah, the last one I didn't really care about too much. Desert Dorada or something like that. But the one before that, Vanitas? Something.

01:11:35.560 --> 01:12:05.000
I don't know how it's pronounced, but that was a killer album. So I'm kind of glad they're back to where I kind of want them to be. I don't know what happened on that last album, but this is definitely cool. So I want to update beers as we move on before the next releases. I'm now drinking a Star Hill Brewery Little Red Rooster Coffee Cream Stout. Noted. We had a main brewing company lunch earlier after our shoots, Abyss Cognac. And what are we drinking now, Will? We have the Russian River Supplication. Oh!

01:12:05.540 --> 01:12:35.020
Ale Aged and Pinot Noir barrels with cherries added. If you're wondering, we're not fucking around tonight. You're killing me. I still keep my Pliny the Elder. It's empty. It's a souvenir. Jay lives out there. He's supposed to be sending us some, but he hasn't. Yeah, he's supposed to be sending us some. But Keith, I can't remember. We've had a lot of guests on. But I think Keith may be our first real beer guy.

01:12:35.540 --> 01:13:05.500
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. That used to be my job, believe it or not. Wait, Keith. Say that again? Well, it used to be my job to sell beer. Oh, well, I'm a professional brewer. For what brewery? I was a brewer at three different breweries here in the D.C. area, Port City, Fairwinds, and most recently, Atlas Brew Works in D.C. Okay, so on a quick side note, since we all love beer and we talk about it on the pod here, Keith, what's your favorite beer? Maybe number one, two? Or maybe style of beer?

01:13:06.440 --> 01:13:35.300
I'm a stout guy though. Yeah, easy. Saison Dupont is my favorite beer of all time. I love Belgian beer and Saison in particular. Pete's a brew head, man. That's all we need. He is. Yep. Brew head. I'm happy to know that not this year, but last year, my previous brewery Fairwinds won a gold medal for Saison at the Great American Beer Fest. No shit. I don't think I can get that out here in Wisconsin. No, no. You can barely get it like two miles from the brewery.

01:13:35.540 --> 01:13:36.120
Okay.

01:13:37.060 --> 01:13:37.460
Don't worry.

01:13:37.460 --> 01:13:38.140
You're not going to get it out.

01:13:38.340 --> 01:13:39.740
We live five minutes from a week.

01:13:39.900 --> 01:13:40.180
Damn it.

01:13:40.660 --> 01:13:48.220
And on a side note, we just recently published Will's latest beer review on the website, his Brew Heads column.

01:13:48.460 --> 01:13:51.460
This one's about permanent funeral, the Pig Destroyer beer.

01:13:51.660 --> 01:13:52.340
Go check that out.

01:13:52.380 --> 01:13:53.320
Pig Destroyer beer.

01:13:53.520 --> 01:13:53.740
Yeah.

01:13:53.800 --> 01:14:03.780
I actually interviewed somebody from Pig Destroyer and Dave Witte from Municipal Waste slash Brain Tentacles slash Publicis UK slash every other goddamn.

01:14:04.340 --> 01:14:34.260
He's like the hardest working drummer in the world. Yeah. So I scored two rock star musicians on that on that Brewheads column. There's a lot of there's a lot of like bands collaborating with breweries nowadays. I've noticed that's that's really cool. There's the obituary beer. Have you had the obituary beer? Yes, I have hopped in half. Hopped in half. Yeah. From your mouth. Oh, I love that song. But I haven't had the beer yet. But you know what? The funny thing is, though,

01:14:34.360 --> 01:15:04.100
So, Keith, Will has been part of this podcast now for a couple years. There has not been a collaboration of a podcast. No Metalheads beer for us. I don't hear yet. Can you believe that? A suggestion might be a Kickstarter program there. For 20 bucks, you'll get a six-pack of beer. For 50, you get a six-pack of beer. You get a six-pack of beer and a reach-around with Will. I got long arms, man. He'll reach through the internet for you.

01:15:04.760 --> 01:15:34.060
All right, so the next new release is the new Crowbar, The Serpent Only Lies. I believe that came out today as well. I have not heard anything other than the single, though, so I have nothing more to add. I bought it. It's awesome? Yeah, I bought it pretty much a couple hours ago, listened to it on the way to John's house, where we're sitting right now. Sounds like Crowbar. Sounds good. Can't wait. Next up, this one's been out for a few weeks, I think. I've had the promo for a while anyway, is the new Dark Throne, Arctic Thunder.

01:15:34.360 --> 01:16:04.220
I'm always pleased to hear of a new Dark Throne release and I was not disappointed with this one you know all these all these Johnny come lately black metal bands they put out this stuff that they think sounds all necro and cult and dark and it's drenched in reverb and sounds like it was recording Satan's ass and and you know Dark Throne has always kind of done their own thing and it still sounds raw and underproduced and yet good so all these bands out there please take a cue from Dark Throne it doesn't have to sound like shit to be raw.

01:16:04.360 --> 01:16:34.300
It just goes to prove that there's sometimes only one band that can do it. Yep. And they're still doing it. Yeah. Next up, also been out for a few weeks, but we didn't talk about it on the last episode. So the new Opeth, Sorceress, is out. Okay. Anybody? Anybody? Oh, my God. Opeth fan? No. I was trying to let you know. No, no, no, no, no. For the record, okay, George has been traveling and we have missed each other like two ships passing in the night. George, sorry, John and I have a long record.

01:16:34.380 --> 01:17:03.500
with our friend TR of our strip. It hasn't made it to George because, again, we've been missing each other. I've been out of town a lot. Yeah, there's going to be another in-between episode. It's going to have that and then our Opeth coverage from the local show and John and I at the Gojira show. So look for that at some point. I will say this. The Lost Tapes of the Metalhead podcast. Yeah. You don't know this, but on Twitter, I am the Opeth fan. I'm at Opeth fan. I live for Opeth. I love Opeth.

01:17:04.360 --> 01:17:34.100
as John has live. But this album has easily jumped to the top of the list for albums I've listened to the most this year. The first five, six songs. Do you listen to it while you're trying to fall asleep or what's going on? It's actually an amazing album. Maybe we need some Opeth lullabies. You don't need them. They're already there on the album. They're on the albums now. I'm waiting for John to punch me in the face as I sit right now. I guess I look at it like this. Opeth just played Radio City Music Hall.

01:17:34.340 --> 01:18:03.880
What the fuck have you done? Have any of your bands played there before? No, because they didn't sell out. They didn't sell out. Oh, if they sold out, then please, trust me, this is not a sellout. Anyway. I just love giving the Opeth shit. I said this on the Opeth episode, you will hear. I think it took a couple Opeth albums, their first couple, before they got in their groove with the established death melodic sound that they had. This, now three albums into their prog sound.

01:18:04.360 --> 01:18:34.320
I think they really have found their groove and I think they really hit their mark well on this album so I like it a lot better than the last one for sure yeah look I mean they're not going to play the same album every single album for 12 13 14 albums bands change if you like it great if you don't all right cool whatever I like the new album I like it better than the last two my two cents is not being the opeth fan or uh don who's actually friends with some of the guys who've seen him a gazillion times live is for not having the history with them not knowing the sort of like the

01:18:34.340 --> 01:18:40.120
death metal aspect of them except for bloodbath um the what what actually kind of annoyed me what i liked

01:18:40.120 --> 01:18:44.860
about the album kind of annoyed me is there's songs in there that i've kept they're catchy that i i find myself

01:18:45.200 --> 01:19:04.320
like singing stuck in my head but it's like it's that every other like great song than a two sticks acoustic lullaby song great song acoustic lullaby song like the song crystal is great song but it's like it's like bookended by lullaby it's funny i actually like the uh quieter tracks better not there's anything wrong with that just just

01:19:04.360 --> 01:19:34.140
Don't ask John what Opeth means to him. What do they mean to me? Remember when a question was asked to you? Oh, yeah. Fucking George. Sorry. I just thought that would be something that he might have, you know, you know, the thing is, you will you will hear it on the episode, guys. But George asked John after the Opeth show. We saw him the day before what Opeth means to him. You know, why have you seen him so many times and stuff? And he's like, oh, I just like him. Yeah. It's either that or a fucking dissertation. You know, I mean, give me a break.

01:19:34.340 --> 01:20:03.900
Well, that's what I was looking for. I could see John the next day as we're driving in the car up there and then on the train. It's like John finally had the moment. He's like, you know why, George? This is why I like him. Fuck you, George. All right. At fucking what? 12 o'clock in that parking lot? Jesus, come on, man. Expect an Opeth episode coming, but enough with Opeth. We talked with them enough. Yeah, I'm hoping Buke has listened to this next one because I haven't, but I know he likes them.

01:20:03.960 --> 01:20:33.920
and the new Sonata Artica, which is the ninth hour. You know what you're getting again? Parametal, Sonata Artica style. Nothing real special, just a good parametal album. Cool. All right. Well, I can talk to the next one for sure. And Jay would too, if he was here. The New Testament album came out today, Brotherhood of the Snake. My vinyl actually showed up a couple of days ago for that. But wow. You know, I mean, for a band that's been around for a long time and you think you know what you're getting from them, this album kills. You know, I thought Dark Roots of the Earth, the last one, was really amazing.

01:20:34.020 --> 01:21:03.780
But this sounds so much like the Legacy with an updated sound. It's thrashy and amazing and yet melodic too. I'd highly recommend checking this out. And I know Jay would say the same thing. Me, me, Will being one of probably, possibly the longest tenured Testament fan on the podcast. What? Well, I mean, I bought the Legacy when it came out. Sort of on cassette. All right. Well, anyway. All right. So equally long.

01:21:04.800 --> 01:21:33.920
The new album is great. The one thing I'm disappointed by two things, and I still think this album is phenomenal, but the two things that I'm disappointed by is one, the lyrical content seems a little campy, and the other thing that I've grown to love about the slightly Newer Testament stuff is when Chuck Billy dives into his death metal vocals. A lot, lot less of it, if not completely absent on this album. I've grown to love that part.

01:21:33.980 --> 01:22:03.940
Yeah, I couldn't understand that, but I felt like it was really more of a, like I said, the legacy era where it was just sort of a thrashy vocal as opposed to a death vocal. Yeah, and I'm not saying I want pure death metal. It's not like, I can't remember the album that he did that on. It was almost like pure death metal. But I liked it, not Dark Roots of the Earth. What was the one before that one? God, I can't believe it. Formation of Damnation? Yeah, Formation of Damnation, where I thought the intersperse between

01:22:04.760 --> 01:22:33.780
the thrashy, I dare I say cleaner vocals, the death metal vocals, I thought was a great balance. And then Dark Roots of the Earth, it kind of lessened a little bit. And I think on this album, it's almost absent. With that said, this is still a phenomenal album. Can I say this? And this is not a bad thing to say. But I almost feel like Dark Roots, I do not have the history you guys do. So Dark Roots for me was my real big diving.

01:22:33.980 --> 01:23:03.940
for them and that's what hooked me on the band but it almost seems like dark roots and uh this now it almost seems like they're the same album almost not there's not a lot of variation it's like they found like a second life with dark roots and they're almost kind of trying to stick by that and starting to stick with it see i thought it was a little different i mean if you uh read the interview with chuck billy or uh maybe i was listening to a serious xm but he basically said he wanted to go back and and make an album closer to dark roots than for

01:23:04.860 --> 01:23:33.920
Damnation. But Buke, if I were you, for me, by far, their best album ever is still The New Order. Their sophomore album, second album, is absolutely unbelievable. I remember seeing the videos on MTV, whatever year that was, like 90s. 90s. 90s. Yeah. Yeah. Those early couple albums are just... The Legacy, but The New Order. If you do not have that, Buke, with...

01:23:33.960 --> 01:24:01.340
I have all their albums now. I've gone back and listened to their catalog extensively. Literally, what made me a huge fan of them, I, of course, knew of them, but it was when the Fillmore opened up and George and I saw them live with Anthrax. Anthrax played and then Testament came out and it's one of those live shows that is so perfect. Words can't even describe how amazing their set was. But if you think they can, you could read my review online.

01:24:04.180 --> 01:24:33.600
And yeah, it's just Chuck is a monster on stage. And the band was solid. Oh, it's so even at death fest is the they just sounded great at death fest last year. Yeah, the actual sound and like that set list like they're they're they're a type band that has been doing this forever. And if there is a big I would easily kick out anthrax from the big four and insert testament in my opinion. American big four. Oh, I see big thumbs up from Keith. I like that. Yeah. You know, testament is.

01:24:34.640 --> 01:25:03.380
Testament is one of the few bands from that era that I think is still really keeping it real. You know, just, you know, in all aspects, you know, Testament, I think is one of the bands that's just still carrying the torch, you know, without making any compromises really like them a lot. Yeah. It was interesting for me about Testament. There was a period of time where they got actually way harder. I can't, I can't believe I don't remember the gathering and yeah, the gathering. Yeah.

01:25:03.960 --> 01:25:30.140
got harder when you have bands like Metallica and Megadeth and Anthrax in that time who were in the Big Four that just decided that, well, we're just going to put out a rock and roll album. Yeah, it seems to me like Testament Overkill kind of just kept chugging along and doing their same thing, and they never compromised anything. Yeah, I feel like Slayer, Testament Overkill, even Exodus, even after Zetro left, I almost felt like they got harder. Yeah.

01:25:33.940 --> 01:26:03.740
with a different Big Four. I like the expanding it idea. Yeah, he's always said there's a Big A. No, I want to kick those asses out. Nope. Nope. You got to throw Death Angel in there too, you know? Yes. Overkill, Testament, Exodus, Death Angel. Dude, if you're from the Bay Area, all those bands count. Yeah. The one thing about this album, the new album, that was sort of a head-scratcher for me was the Ted Nugent reference. Did you catch that, Will? The song Black Jack.

01:26:03.960 --> 01:26:33.740
The Stakes Are High and So Am I. And I'm like, in the air tonight, it's a free-for-all? I haven't listened to that. I'm going to definitely go back and listen to that now. Every time he sings that, I'm like, where's Ted Nugent? Why is he not suing you? The Stakes Are High, yes. Oh my god, I had that when I was a kid. It's a direct rip-off right there. But anyway. Otherwise, it's about some Sumerian brotherhood that led off to the Knights of Templar. And somehow Ted ended up in a wine cloth there.

01:26:33.940 --> 01:27:03.580
Put his little tail in the back of his ass. Yeah. All right. We got one more new release. This is the new album, The Dark Hereafter, from Winterfelleth. And I'm not much of a fan, but I know Buke is, so I was kind of hoping maybe he'd listen to this. I have listened to this. This is, as my daughter is blowing up on the monitor. It's wonderful. My wife's up there. I think Atmospheric Black Metal done at its best myself. They don't have a lot of the musical,

01:27:07.420 --> 01:27:07.780
You know,

01:27:28.940 --> 01:27:30.580
and you've got me into these guys before,

01:27:30.930 --> 01:27:32.480
a while back, I think a year ago or something.

01:27:32.640 --> 01:28:02.380
So I'll definitely check this one out when I get a chance to. You will not be disappointed. It's just the drums intro to track two is awesome. Cool. All right. We're going to move on to our top five. This is one that John came up with. And I'm hoping, Keith, did you make a list? Yes. Yes. Excellent. I've been thinking about it all day. All right. So the idea that John came up with and then I mutated a little bit because I don't think it went quite the way he wanted it to. Oh, no, no. That wasn't it at all.

01:28:02.620 --> 01:28:32.600
I just wanted to define it that's all because if we could pick anyone cool if you want it current cool didn't matter to me all right so I was fine either way basically what we got here is each of us are creating our own heavy metal festival and we're gonna pick the five bands that it's gonna be a small festival apparently because it's only five bands but so our top five bands that would play at this festival five being the opener one being the headliner and the way we do this Keith is we we go in an order

01:28:32.600 --> 01:29:00.900
from newest to oldest. So you're the guest. So you'll go first and then John and then Will and then Buke and then me. And we'll read off our number fives. Like you'll do five and then John will do five and so forth. We'll go around and then we come back to you and you do your four and we just sort of spiral down to our number ones. Cool. Got it. All right. So while we're doing this, Will is like breaking out a fucking behemoth beer right now. Oh, no. Like the band's behemoth? Well, no. Why you got to do this to me?

01:29:02.600 --> 01:29:32.560
Those have a beer, but it's not that beer. Keith, if you were here, we would share this with you. Trust me. He's breaking out the bones here on this one. Keith, if you like metal and beer the way I'm perceiving that you do, I think you're all our new BFF. Yeah, yeah. We're all buddies now. You used to sell beer, and I used to brew beer. Maybe we should start a brewery. And I drink beer, so I'm in. The last thing we're going to do, Keith, is make a beer for the podcast. It's the last thing we're going to do. That's a great idea. I've brewed myself a little bit.

01:29:32.620 --> 01:30:02.540
as well. Keith, are you a Saturday Night Live fan at all? I like the old stuff, yeah. Trust me, this is only coming from a good place. I keep thinking of that old episode where they had Keith Richards and Ron Wood on and he kept saying, Keith! No shit, I was just thinking about that shit the other week. It's one of the funniest things. I think it's Dana Carvey and, god, I can't remember that guy, the guy who played Austin Powers. They kept calling him Keith the whole time.

01:30:02.620 --> 01:30:32.120
Mike Myers. I just could not stop laughing. So thank you. I'm glad you had a good humor about that. Did everyone refill their beers? Yep. I've got a Brooklyn black chocolate style. This is for Buke. I'm trying to go hunting in a couple hours. Wait, you got the black chocolate style? Yep. Nice. Wait, you're literally going to go hunting in a few hours, Buke? Yeah. Like a few hours as in you're going out in the middle of the night or you're going to go out in the morning? 5, 530 in the morning. Oh. I was going to say, how are you supposed to hunt without drinking, man? Yeah.

01:30:32.600 --> 01:31:02.240
Keep you warm. Is this with a shotgun, rifle, or a bow, or a knife? This is my crossbow. You like South Park, don't you? It's coming right at us! Yeah, you can't go out hunting and not drink. It's my crossbow. Yeah, remember that? The Democrats' pussy law number one. You can't shoot an animal, remember that? You know, Keith is sitting there fucking smoking and drinking. Keith is beating all of us pussies. That's the rock star life, man. Exactly. Keith is living the fucking elf lifestyle.

01:31:02.620 --> 01:31:29.720
I wouldn't expect any other. Hey, man. It pays so fucking well. How can you not? You know what, though, buddy? I got no problem with you smoking. I wanted you to pull out a nice long Ganondorf play pipe and just sit there. You know, like blow like big, like blow like a dragon or something and like send it at the camera or something. I think I have that paraphernalia in the closet.

01:31:32.620 --> 01:32:02.160
to take this show on the road to Milwaukee. What are you drinking, George? I already told you. Brooklyn black chocolate stuff. What are you guys drinking? That's good stuff. All right, we're going to show you. This is the last of its kind ever. This is Double DBA from Firestone Walker 2014. It's the last one they ever did until they did the rye version this year, which fucking pissed me off. But this is kind of a rarity, this one. All right. All right. That's why we're in Don's house to... Oh, please. Bullshit. He throws out way more than I do when it comes to specialty beers.

01:32:02.260 --> 01:32:23.880
Now Allison's going to wish we had a hot tub here tonight. Oh yeah, Allison's going to be so mad at me. You're drinking fucking double DBA? Yeah. The great Dr. Lang was her husband, Pete, John and I, and Allison have been trying to get together to do a bottle share. It's not working out. Yeah, this hasn't worked out yet. She's going to be really mad at me. And John. She's going to be mad at John. Anyway.

01:32:32.340 --> 01:32:37.000
Was your best week?

01:33:02.280 --> 01:33:32.120
Yes, the number five is the opener, the number one is the headliner. Yeah, I assumed that this was bands that are active now, and I built my festival on bands that I thought would be really fun to see live, and some of them I've never seen, and some of them I've seen many times. But my opener for my festival would be Gudalax from Czech Republic. They're a gore grind band with a lot of songs,

01:33:32.280 --> 01:34:02.240
about poo. What? Yeah, check them out. Guta Lax is what they're called. That's right. Their top Spotify track is Anus Ice Cream. Oh, man. I've never seen them live, but if you look at videos of their show, it looks like

01:34:02.280 --> 01:34:03.880
It looks like so much fun

01:34:03.960 --> 01:34:06.460
and their lead singer sounds like a toad

01:34:06.520 --> 01:34:08.520
I don't know how he does that vocal style

01:34:08.780 --> 01:34:10.960
but their songs are actually really catchy

01:34:11.400 --> 01:34:12.860
and it looks like a lot of fun

01:34:13.020 --> 01:34:14.680
so I think they would make a great opener

01:34:15.940 --> 01:34:16.820
That's interesting

01:34:17.180 --> 01:34:17.320
Alright

01:34:19.940 --> 01:34:20.480
That's wild

01:34:20.840 --> 01:34:24.260
Alright so in talking with George about this

01:34:24.360 --> 01:34:24.980
I tried to

01:34:25.120 --> 01:34:27.240
we were talking about coming up with a theme for bands

01:34:27.600 --> 01:34:29.840
so I was telling Will then when he came

01:34:29.840 --> 01:34:31.260
that my theme was

01:34:57.640 --> 01:35:00.180
They're supposed to be playing here next month,

01:35:00.240 --> 01:35:30.100
But the tickets haven't gone on sale. I know, and I've been looking the whole time. And I would love to see these guys. I've been in contact with the one guy in the band a little bit, and they seem like they're decent guys. They're cool. But I think the music's awesome. So that's my little atmospheric black metal band to open. Sweet. Will? So my top five list, I try to focus on bands that I love that I've never seen live, except for my number five, which is not really my number five.

01:35:30.280 --> 01:35:31.980
But creator

01:35:32.320 --> 01:35:33.800
I haven't seen creator

01:35:34.270 --> 01:35:35.240
In probably a decade

01:35:35.760 --> 01:35:36.380
And some of the

01:35:36.560 --> 01:35:38.060
There's albums that have come out

01:35:38.200 --> 01:35:38.960
In the last decade

01:35:39.720 --> 01:35:40.920
Specifically Hordes of Chaos

01:35:41.160 --> 01:35:42.260
I would love to see them

01:35:42.380 --> 01:35:43.220
Play a lot of that stuff live

01:35:43.500 --> 01:35:43.980
And I haven't

01:35:44.100 --> 01:35:45.040
So creator

01:35:45.320 --> 01:35:45.600
Excellent

01:35:45.860 --> 01:35:46.080
Buke

01:35:46.280 --> 01:35:46.740
Number five

01:35:47.300 --> 01:35:48.060
My number five

01:35:48.320 --> 01:35:48.900
And the name

01:35:48.940 --> 01:35:49.800
I went a step further

01:35:49.960 --> 01:35:51.820
I named this fucking festival

01:35:52.240 --> 01:35:52.440
Sweet

01:35:52.840 --> 01:35:53.820
This is

01:35:54.000 --> 01:35:54.900
Buke's Black Metal

01:35:55.060 --> 01:35:56.540
Is for Bitches Festival

01:35:58.180 --> 01:35:59.380
That'll go well with mine

01:36:00.740 --> 01:36:29.320
Fuck your black metal bands. Fuck it all. Coming out like a shotgun blast in the brutalest, heaviest mosh pit, Hatebreed, is starting it off. Nice. Have you seen Hatebreed before? I have. Like eight or nine times, and it's a fucking fight every time. I love it. Yeah. George got his ass kicked in the Hatebreed pit with me. Yep. It's probably one of my last pits. Yep. Yeah, so on the heels of Bukes, Distaste for Black Metal.

01:36:29.400 --> 01:36:59.320
is my black metal themed list. Because all but one of these bands I have not seen before. And the one band that I did see, it was sort of a truncated set. So these are all bands that I would like to see. And one of them I am going to see. But my number five, and I think you guys are going to, except for Keith, you're all going to be kind of shocked that this is at number five. But Brassenblatt. No way. What? They're opening my show, Joel. Yeah, sorry.

01:37:01.320 --> 01:37:29.360
But because it's like a pecking order kind of thing. All these other bands have been around for a lot longer. So that's the only reason. I did consider that. I was like, man, this should be one. These bands better be bigger because you're putting them at number five. Hey, he's on the bill. Come on. All right. Keith, number four. Number four for me. So you just had Goodalax open with their poo metal. Keith, can I say that I just heard

01:37:29.400 --> 01:37:59.360
I heard Gudalax by the way when everyone else was talking. You're right. That vocals. That's not even human. Isn't it cool? It's different all right. They do it live too. I don't know how they do it but a lot of fun they look like. They're coming off the heels of the fun that's Gudalax. Yeah. Absolutely. So my second opener would kind of be going off the grind gore genre a little bit as well and that would be Hammerage from Spain. I really like

01:37:59.540 --> 01:38:26.480
And again, they're a band I've never got to see. Their songs are fun and gory and catchy and they hearken back to the glory days of Carcass, but they have this whole stage getup of the whole surgeon, surgical thing, you know, blood spattered surgeon outfits and everything. A lot of fun they look like. So again, you know, going on my theme of fun, they look like just a really fun band to see. I've always wanted to see them.

01:38:26.660 --> 01:38:56.020
Keith, you just reminded me of a band that I feel like I should have had an honorable mention. Brain Drill. Brain Drill. Have you not heard of Brain Drill? Tech Death? No. Tech Death, super gory. Totally see these guys in lab coats full of blood with drills in their hands. So I have two comments for Keith. First of all, based on what you consider fun, I might not hang out with you. Or if I am, I am at least bringing like a rain slicker.

01:38:57.320 --> 01:39:26.600
And the second thing is, you know, based on listening to your music, one would not guess that you listen to this stuff. Yeah, you know, my tastes run the whole spectrum, man. I like all different kinds of stuff. That's awesome. Blue, that's classical to name it. Excellent. All right, John, number four. All right, so the rest of these bands now are all bands I've seen, and they are all shows that I had an unbelievable time at. So, because I wanted my festival to be just one after another, just great shows that I've seen. So, and they're my second band, which is,

01:39:26.660 --> 01:39:56.160
is hard to believe, but it's Gojira. I've seen them a few times, and every time I've seen them, they've just been beyond intense. And I will then get to go with George and I to see them recently. But that was our first show together ever. Yes, it was. It was, wasn't it? Yes. How you doing, handsome? That's when you ask me, what's the deal with Devin Townsend? Yes, that was the show. But yeah, I mean, every time I've seen them, they've just been nothing, but they put 150% into their show. The crowd goes crazy the whole fucking night. The pit is just the whole floor. Oh, yeah.

01:39:56.260 --> 01:39:58.440
And so that's they're my pit band for my

01:39:58.450 --> 01:40:03.180
my little festival so yeah if you ever imagine yourself getting back in the pit that's your pit band

01:40:03.500 --> 01:40:14.560
dude my pit was up in the fucking rafters with george standing there with him and i with no one near us for like 10 seats just enjoying ourselves with all this open space and watching everybody else fucking get hit

01:40:16.840 --> 01:40:26.240
so all right well all right my number four high on fire i've never seen high on fire live what yeah and this is the crazy thing i think i've had

01:40:26.260 --> 01:40:54.960
It's like four or five different High on Fire shows. And it just so happens that every single time that they come through, I can't make it. Aren't they coming through again in a couple weeks? Yes, I think I saw them five times alone on one Opeth tour. Right. I had a similar problem with Motley Crue. I kept going, having tickets to see them and never seeing them. Did you miss anything? No. Actually, when I finally did see them, it was actually a pretty good show. I know, I know.

01:40:56.260 --> 01:41:24.340
in a couple weeks to the DC area. And I'm going to be where I'm going to be. I can't tell you how many times I've seen them opening for Opeth on one tour. I can't remember what year that was. Yeah, I've never seen High on Fire. So that's my number four. They're cool live. I'll tell you that much. That's my number four. I've never seen them. I want to see them live. I'm dying. You want to see that gut without that shirt on? He hate Mike Pike hate shirts. Or Matt, whatever his name is. Matt. Matt Pike.

01:41:26.260 --> 01:41:56.220
the energy up that is coming off of hate breed a young band and i want to put them on the bill just to spread the word to them more thrash metal youngsters black fast oh yeah they these kids blew me away i interviewed them for the pod uh you may have heard on earlier episode but uh man these kids are amazing live they're a cool band so black fast all right and black fast is coming to dc the pinch soon i think i'm gonna miss that one too i think there was somebody else yes

01:41:56.240 --> 01:42:24.900
Who are they with? They have a touring nonstop. Are they playing Vector? I think so, yeah. Oh, fuck. Sorry. Let me find out where they are. But yeah, Blackfast. Holy shit, they're good. That's a good selection. Well done, Buke. My number four, Bluthaus Nord. Nobody cares. Who's that? What? That wasn't even us. No, that was George's shirt. He was wearing a death vest one day. Yeah, Bluthaus Nord, a French band.

01:42:26.220 --> 01:42:56.160
A-man show kind of thing, like yourself. Sort of avant-garde-ish black metal. He kind of moves around a bit with the style from time to time. But I think it all sort of originates around a black metal core. I did not realize that was a one-man's band. I've always wanted to list them, and I never have, and I guess I should. I really like the last one. You've mentioned them several times, minus me seeing you wearing a shirt at Death Fest. But you've mentioned them a couple times. I need to delve into that.

01:42:56.240 --> 01:43:26.200
a little bit. Yeah, check out the latest one. Not the split, but the last full album. I'm not laughing about the events that day, but that's, we all got up from Death Fest, and everyone's in a black t-shirt, and you busted out the white shirt, and I'm like, fuck, he's gonna be so cool from this, and it didn't quite go the way that we had planned, right? Oh, he was cool, all right. Hey, so just to interject just a little bit, going back, Black

01:43:26.220 --> 01:43:56.000
We'll be playing at The Pinch in D.C. on November 23rd. And I will be here for that. Oh, the 23rd? 23rd, yeah. The day before Thanksgiving. Yeah. That's not a time you want to be traveling around here. No, going into the city might be no traffic. That's true. All right. All right, back to Keith for number three. This was a tough spot for me. So, you know, any good music lineup I think should have variety. You know, I never want to see like five bands that all sound like each other in the same genre.

01:43:59.900 --> 01:44:25.400
Yeah, well, you know, there should be a little bit of variety. So this might come out and say you like Adele. I was thinking about it. It could get worse, man. So my third slot would be Arcona from Russia. They're kind of a folk metal band. They're a whole hell of a lot of fun to see live. And they're front woman.

01:44:26.240 --> 01:44:55.840
Masha is just one of the best lead singers or screamers singers that I've ever seen. She just puts on such an amazing show and has such a great command of the stage and just really gets the energy and the crowd going. It's a great band to see live. Do they sing in English, Keith? No, the lyrics are all in Russian from where I understand. Okay. Pukes out. Yeah, I just have a problem with it. If stuff's not done in English, I just tap out.

01:44:56.240 --> 01:45:26.020
Well, if Trump wins, he's going to make sure all music is in English now. Speak English or die! Literally. Okay, John, number three. Okay, so like I said, these remaining four bands are all shows that I saw that I was just blown away. And my number three, I saw him at Prog Power and just, he destroyed it that year. That was Eson. He had Leprous as his backup band. Yeah, yeah. And fuck. I mean, yeah, I love Emperor, but Eson live on his own, especially,

01:45:26.220 --> 01:45:54.880
Like I said, Leprous has his backup band. If you know Leprous, he just fucking crushed Prog Power that year. And he has that black metal Prog thing going. And most people, George, you've been there. You know. People like a lot of different bands, but it's always going to be Prog. It's always going to be Power. And he won everybody over that year. Wow. It was such a great show. And I feel bad putting him at number three because he's fucking, it's Eson, man. You know what I mean? Yeah. All right. Will.

01:45:56.020 --> 01:46:25.680
My number three, Hark. Crystaline. Holy shit. Will has been big on these guys ever since we first started talking about it. I love these guys. Aside from my number five creator, which I've seen, all the bands that I'm going to list from four through one are bands I've not seen. If I have to pick my own festival, I'm going to pick these bands because I've never seen them. Hark from the UK. I fucking love these guys. Phenomenal musicians.

01:46:26.040 --> 01:46:56.000
I just would love to see them live right on number three number three band a band that I love I haven't seen them yet and you know what I'm gonna change things up on the fly I have a couple are you making this up as you go long it sounds like no no no I have a list right here I'm reading off of I'm changing up on taking this one band off revocation okay number three that works because it Dave on the guitar just blows your mind live so revocation all right continuing with my unchanging theme of bands

01:46:56.040 --> 01:47:25.980
that all sound the same. Similar anyway. This is the band that I have seen before. Buk and I saw them briefly when they opened up for a band that we didn't get to see either, Suffocation. This is Satyricon. Yeah, that was a weird night. That was. It's like, Suffocation, Satyricon, what? They played like three songs? Yeah, remember they took like an hour and a half to try and set up. Yeah, so that kind of sucked. But I would like to see them in all their glory. And back to Keith for number two. Have they been back to the States since?

01:47:26.040 --> 01:47:55.420
George? Not that I... They must have. They must have, and I just haven't seen them. But maybe not. Keith, number two. So my festival show started out with kind of like the grindcore, gore grind bands, and goes a little bit up in production each time. I want bands that are exciting to see and fun to see live that you can sing along with and have a good time and drink beer and have a good time with the people around you.

01:47:55.580 --> 01:48:23.000
And for me, that number four, you know, second to headliner would be Nightwish by far. Yeah, I'm a huge Nightwish fan. I think they're one of the most fun live bands I've ever seen and just really passionate bands. And that to me is a recipe for a good show. And you don't mind singer changes or anything? I was going to say, yeah, Keith, which singer? Oh, man, you know, I like them all. I think Floor is amazing.

01:48:25.580 --> 01:48:55.560
of the old songs and i think she just runs the whole spectrum she's a really good lead singer and i've never seen them i would love to see them that's a great choice keith did you ever did you ever like an amazing band you ever like after forever i've i've checked them out a little bit actually you know after she started singing with nightwish i kind of started looking at her older projects as well but that's where i got it i got into her with the very first album from after forever so yeah yeah she's a great singer she really is oh my god i

01:48:55.600 --> 01:49:25.560
In my opinion, the best singer in all of rock and metal, hands down. Her sister's a pretty damn good singer, too. So is that me now? That's you. All right. So you guys obviously know I'm going to have a certain band on my list. It's just who I am. But they're not my number one. They're not my headline band. I've seen these guys more than anybody else. I'm putting them in. I don't give a fuck what anybody thinks. Adele? God damn it, Will. Stole his thunder. It's going to be all of it. They're going to be my number four. They would have been my

01:49:26.140 --> 01:49:55.540
They're a different band now, so they're gonna be the band before the headline. Because I'm not gonna go to a show without them playing. I've seen them enough, though. And again, this all boils down to bands that I had the best time at when I've seen them live. I want them all in one fun show. I don't want to have to go to five shows. I want to go to one show. That's great. I was worried you were gonna say Winger or something. Dude, Winger's got one of the most amazing drummers ever in that band. They're all amazing. They're great musicians.

01:49:59.100 --> 01:50:01.300
It's only 17

01:50:02.320 --> 01:50:06.540
And then they masked the 17 part by Colin and Madeline in the next song

01:50:08.320 --> 01:50:12.020
My number two, Pyres from Toronto, Canada

01:50:12.320 --> 01:50:13.980
I fucking love this band

01:50:14.200 --> 01:50:19.040
And they have never made their way this far south on the North American continent

01:50:19.250 --> 01:50:21.160
And if you're listening, which I'm sure they're not

01:50:22.180 --> 01:50:23.420
We're gonna fucking make them listen

01:50:23.420 --> 01:50:53.160
I know. I brewed a lot of beer listening to this band. They're my number two. I will see them live somewhere at some point. Get them here. You're muted. Sorry. I'm having one. You tell them. Well, I'm sorry. I didn't hear your number two. Well, my apologies. Yeah, you were getting smacked in the head with a book. Apparently, what's your number two? My number two is Pyres. I don't even know who Pyres is. They're from Toronto, Canada, and they're awesome. If you apparently do not know me.

01:50:58.360 --> 01:50:59.420
My number two

01:50:59.560 --> 01:51:00.300
Way to go, Steph

01:51:00.720 --> 01:51:01.900
Yeah, Steph will do it all night long

01:51:02.160 --> 01:51:04.080
My number two, I've never seen them yet

01:51:04.800 --> 01:51:07.160
And I have had a couple opportunities

01:51:07.300 --> 01:51:08.940
And I haven't yet, between the Baron and me

01:51:09.160 --> 01:51:09.540
Yeah

01:51:10.240 --> 01:51:12.920
Hey, did you hear that they're going to be playing Prog Power?

01:51:13.200 --> 01:51:14.040
Are you serious?

01:51:14.380 --> 01:51:15.540
Yeah, they're playing Prog Power

01:51:15.720 --> 01:51:19.140
So can I take George's spot next year? Can it be like Buke TR and John again?

01:51:19.440 --> 01:51:21.460
Yep, we can fucking work it out

01:51:21.480 --> 01:51:22.840
No matter how you want to work it out

01:51:22.840 --> 01:51:52.620
What are you drinking? You can't show off. What are you drinking? This is Bell's Amber Ale. It's a little Michigan beer. Oh, yes. Bell's. It's a little Michigan beer. The little Michigan beer. From Kalamazoo. Yeah, a good beer. All right, George, bring it. Ah, right. Number two. This one could have been my number one, but they're not. I've never seen them. In fact,

01:51:52.860 --> 01:52:22.680
Most people have never seen them because they haven't played a show in a very long time. They've only played a handful of shows ever. David Hasselhoff? Nope. Close. Dark Throne. Oh, dude, I would be there with you on that one. I would love to go see them. Yeah, they don't. They did. You know, Fenris doesn't like to play, so they don't play. Exactly. But yeah, that would be pretty awesome. All right. Keith, drum roll. Number one. All right. This is this is easy. No problem. My headliner for the festival.

01:52:22.840 --> 01:52:52.780
would be full-blown production of King Diamond. No sweat. Oh, that's a good one. Nice. Yeah, King Diamond, just one of the best live bands I've ever seen. So much fun to see. Really passionate fan base. Totally kick-ass stage show, too, when I saw them most recently with the whole stage get-up and everything. Just a lifelong King Diamond fan. I think he's just really creative and fun.

01:52:52.860 --> 01:53:22.540
to see live too. There are definitely elements of King Diamond, as we talked about earlier in the podcast, in the Unearthed Elf stuff. So yeah, for sure. Yeah. I love it when you said for sure. And you said for sure after you drank a huge slug of Bell's beers. It was awesome. Absolutely. Yeah. All right. John, number one. All right. So my choice, I've seen this guy a gazillion times. Some with Will one time, some with George another. And I want the full fucking show. I want the retinal circus. Yes.

01:53:22.840 --> 01:53:52.820
All the fucking craziness. I want everything to fucking blow up on stage. Jazz hands. I want fucking jazz hands. I want fucking prog nipples. I want it all. You want his mom's leathery lips. The whole fucking thing, man. George got to see part of it, and he is insane on stage. And I want it with my favorite singer in the whole world. That's the Devin Townsend Project with Anika Van Geersbergen as a guest. Oh, good choice. I have totally drank that Kool-Aid, man. I am hardcore into that now. He is just... The first ten minutes of

01:53:52.840 --> 01:54:22.820
the show where his was just him talking and he's just off the fucking charts. You've never seen Devin Townsend live, especially now, since he's just way beyond where he was in early in his career. He's focused now. And he was talking from behind the curtain. So you can't see him. The curtain's down and he's just like on the mic, like talking shit. Talking shit and then makes the best comment ever. You know, I may be a pussy. What was that? You remember that, George? Yeah. Do you remember? I can't remember the exact comment. I may be a pussy, but I'm not a nerd. Right. Exactly. Yeah. So if you've never

01:54:22.860 --> 01:54:29.820
I don't know I don't know I remember any who go see Devin Townsend definitely will number one my

01:54:30.040 --> 01:54:52.179
number one bloodbath ever see him live ah buke and I got a taste of that oh I was there I was in Baltimore the current bloodbath would not be my number one well yes and and buke I would agree with you I would like to see bloodbath back with uh acrifart um or even the guy who did uh nightmares made flesh

01:54:52.200 --> 01:54:55.340
Peter from Hypocrisy. Yeah, Peter.

01:54:56.160 --> 01:54:57.260
If it was...

01:54:57.430 --> 01:55:00.460
And what's weird is I love Nick Holmes with the new...

01:55:00.620 --> 01:55:05.440
Yeah, it's cool, but it's got to be Bloodbath from that Valken DVD for that version.

01:55:06.260 --> 01:55:07.740
I've never seen him live.

01:55:07.830 --> 01:55:08.720
I would love to see him live.

01:55:08.770 --> 01:55:10.460
It's one of my favorite death metal bands ever.

01:55:10.660 --> 01:55:10.820
Cool.

01:55:11.240 --> 01:55:11.680
Buke, number one.

01:55:12.160 --> 01:55:15.480
If there's any question who would be my number one, Opeth is my number one.

01:55:15.490 --> 01:55:17.820
I'm telling you the reason why real quick.

01:55:18.300 --> 01:55:48.260
Seeing Them At Radio City Music Hall, when they played By the Pain I See It is little gems that Opeth hits you with, or you see them play a song live that you may have heard five or six or ten times live before. It's that moment when you're like, it wasn't even that. It was him saying, you know, I don't even really like this song, and we're going to play it tonight. And then they fucking crush it. They crushed it. And you know what, though? But didn't he also say, he's like, you know what? We hated this.

01:55:48.320 --> 01:56:18.180
We actually kind of like it now. Or something like that. When you hear a band so dynamic, still at the top of their game, it's... Without a doubt. It was worth the whole fucking trip. Yeah. So, Opeth will always be my number one. All right. No surprises there. My number one is going to be a dual set. One of those, we're going to play this set, and then we're going to play this set. The first half of the set is going to be Eson. Second half of the set, Emperor. Yes! I'm in!

01:56:18.320 --> 01:56:48.280
I'm going to Georgia's festival. Yeah. Um, you know, that's why I was like, you know, Dark Throne could be my number one, but they've got a lot more. Well, it's actually technically, uh, Dark Throne probably has twice as many albums, but yeah, but Eson's twice as better. Twice is better. Yeah. So that's my number one. Now, uh, before we move on, we've got another guest here who wants to come on and give his list. Jay has got internet and we're going to dial him in real quick. Jay, you there? Yes, I am. Oh, fucking

01:56:48.880 --> 01:57:18.240
Yeah, it was a real shit show. Hey, Jay, just tell the truth. You were at Fieldworks, weren't you? I'm glad I was able to catch you guys at the end, at least. There he is. Jay, this is Keith. Keith, this is Jay, our other brother in metal. Nice to meet you, Keith. I like your record. So we just finished our top five. Do you want to just run through your list real quick? Five to one? Did you do it? Yeah. Are you? Not exactly. I was doing it as we were speaking because I didn't think I was going to be on. But, um,

01:57:18.320 --> 01:57:48.280
So are you recording right now? Yes, we are. Live on the air. Well, yeah. I'll tell you what, I was just getting started, so I'll just tell you the top two that I came up with, and that is that Celtic Frost slash Tom Warrior slash Trypticon day. That almost made mine. Let me hear yours. It wasn't black enough, though. Mine was black metal themed, so number five was Throssenblot, number four, Blue Dalsonord, number three, Satyricon, number two, Dark Throne, and number one, Eson slash Emperor. Oh, well, who will be seeing at...

01:57:48.300 --> 01:58:18.160
Yeah. Well, and then I'll just give you two more. I would, I could spend a weekend with enslaved for sure. You know, that would have worked on my last choice. Yeah, for sure, man. And then there may be kind of the mainstream these days a little bit, but actually I'll give you two more Mastodon and you know, I love monster magnet and they don't get there too. And I love their whole catalog and I would love to see them and a group of bands like them do a festival. So I think that's four. I'm going to stop at four. Right on. But there was actually a couple of other,

01:58:18.300 --> 01:58:23.140
list things that I wanted to kind of just mention since you got me. Partially because I'm really obsessed with one new record.

01:58:23.420 --> 01:58:25.260
We're just getting into the what we're listening to.

01:58:25.350 --> 01:58:27.040
Okay, even better. Cool. We'll just wait.

01:58:28.100 --> 01:58:30.000
All right. Well, we're glad you could make it.

01:58:30.340 --> 01:58:33.980
Yeah, I'm glad I could pop in. It wouldn't have felt right to have not shown up at all.

01:58:34.070 --> 01:58:37.620
I know. This would have been the only episode since you first came on that you haven't been on.

01:58:37.620 --> 01:58:40.680
Yeah, I'm glad we didn't break that record. Nice shirt, John.

01:58:40.900 --> 01:58:41.180
Thank you.

01:58:41.860 --> 01:58:42.400
What's up, Willem?

01:58:42.680 --> 01:58:43.120
Yo, dude!

01:58:44.080 --> 01:58:45.320
Everybody's got a nice shirt on today.

01:58:45.780 --> 01:58:48.060
All right. We're going to move on to what we're listening to.

01:59:11.280 --> 01:59:14.700
And again, we will start with Grumpy Cat Keith.

01:59:17.280 --> 01:59:45.660
Keith's cat does look like a grumpy cat. It's either that or Abbess. Yes, that's true. Wow, that's a voice right there, man. Yes. That's why he is the owner of self, man. Yeah, he's out doing me. Listening to Lately, right? Yes, sir. Okay. So my thing lately has been checking out heavy metal bands from Japan and South Korea. Okay. And, you know, aside from the visual K and everything, it's not an area.

01:59:46.080 --> 02:00:15.560
that we see a lot of metal bands for. So I've been digging for them. And I'm a really big power metal fan. So I've really been digging this band Lightbringer, they're called, from Japan. I don't think they're active anymore, but man, fucking amazing, just progressive, melodic power metal from Japan. Again, lyrics not in English, so you might not dig it. Sorry. I love power metal. You never say it when you're in English.

02:00:16.460 --> 02:00:45.720
But yeah, whatever they're singing about, it's cool with me because the music is just fucking amazing and just killer melodies and everything. I had to order the CD imported through eBay for like fucking $25, but it was worth it. That was just shipping. The CD cost you about $70. It was expensive, man. Yeah, Lightbringer. Really kick-ass band. Cool. So let's see. Where are we now? Now we're still back to

02:00:45.740 --> 02:01:14.760
All right, my turn. What we're listening to, we mentioned a couple of these already. Alcest, Kadama, Mike, I'm liking that one a lot. Ancients, Voice of the Void, Band Called Source, Return to Nothing. If you guys are Tool fans, you might want to check these guys out. It's interesting. Eternal Champion, The Armor of R. I'm big on this kind of 80s revival sound a lot. Band that Will got me into, and I think, George, you were talking about Blood Incantation. I responded to these guys a lot.

02:01:14.860 --> 02:01:44.740
And then I'm going to go past my five. I don't know if you guys are listening to them yet. There's two songs out there called Trees of Eternity. I don't know if you're familiar with them. It's the kind of collaboration of Swallow the Sun and Catatonia and the girl that passed away just recently. I don't know if you heard about them. They're kind of a gothic, doomy, prog band. There's only two songs out there, but it's kind of cool. It's the main guy. It's the main writer from I think he's the main writer from Swallow the Sun that's heading it off. Yuri or Yura, what is his name?

02:01:48.400 --> 02:02:13.760
So, a lot of what I've been listening to lately is... Chew Swallow first. Sorry. Mean pizza. Okay. What I've been listening to lately is... Hey, I believe that made somebody's mid-year list, huh? Who would that be? Buke? Buke? Yeah. Let me ask you this, Will. Does it have a question mark on the end of it like that? Yeah. That was Will Caki.

02:02:14.780 --> 02:02:44.140
Thanks, Jay. Thanks for will cocking that, Jay. I do want to point out, and I want someone to be a verifiable impartial witness. So you're going to ask the guy he's been drinking beers with all night. Yeah. So for some reason, every like five inches on this paper that I printed out. It's not in italics. Yeah. No, it's some reason if you look at here and here, there's a couple places my printer just decided to make it blurry. Okay. Yeah.

02:02:46.360 --> 02:03:14.140
That's legit. What I've been listening to lately is Oak Pantheon in Pieces, which I got from Hi, My Name is John. That was one of John's best recommendations to me in recent. Brain Tentacles, self-titled album Brain Tentacles. Boy, I couldn't get into that one. What was your problem with that? It's too jazzy, avant-garde weirdness. Granted, I didn't go far. Wait, you like Dothheim's guard.

02:03:14.360 --> 02:03:15.460
That's metal. That's metal.

02:03:16.020 --> 02:03:19.840
All the fucking two avant-garde weirdness for you?

02:03:20.110 --> 02:03:20.600
I know.

02:03:20.970 --> 02:03:21.380
I know.

02:03:21.480 --> 02:03:22.080
That's saying something.

02:03:22.820 --> 02:03:23.060
Yeah.

02:03:23.200 --> 02:03:26.000
Holy Jesus fucking titty fucking Christ.

02:03:28.140 --> 02:03:31.140
Did you just join this fucking beer-fueled calamity?

02:03:33.460 --> 02:03:34.420
Way to quote our shirt.

02:03:34.660 --> 02:03:36.120
Jay, what are you drinking right now?

02:03:37.500 --> 02:03:41.220
I'm still, we just had wine and pizza for supper, so I gotta let that wear off.

02:03:41.330 --> 02:03:44.000
Out of all the bands, that's the band for you?

02:03:44.180 --> 02:04:14.080
that's too out there for you, George? It was just weird. It wasn't like... It's too jazzy, okay? There was like... To me, there was no structure. Too much saxophone? Yeah, it's just weird. Too much saxophone? Granted, I listened to like 30 seconds of two songs and said that's enough. Maybe I'm not doing it justice. Anyway... I'm not saying you can't like it. I'm just saying... I have been best friends with this guy since I was back in fucking high school. I have never heard him make a statement.

02:04:14.200 --> 02:04:44.160
like that. And this is the band that does it. It's New George. George 2.0. Yeah, man. Wait till you hear my list. Just wait. In case anyone is wondering, Dave Witte is the drummer of Brain Tentacles who's in the latest installment of Brew Heads. I like the people that are in the band, which is why I checked it out. But you suck. I do. You enjoyed it last time. Anyway, so moving on. And I'm going to butcher

02:04:44.180 --> 02:05:14.160
I'm going to fuck a total of you cocky this one um soliloquium an empty frame holy shit this is a fucking good album don't know that next one obituary 10,000 ways to die yeah best of bolt thrower which I had to buy absolutely at this point in my life uh testament brotherhood of the snake uh I just recently for some reason didn't have this one I couldn't believe it didn't have it is a pig destroyer terrifier that's probably favorite that's my favorite one by them I think yeah I have no

02:05:14.160 --> 02:05:42.740
I have no idea why I did not have that one. I got the, been listening to the new Netherbird, a Grand Voyager, local DC band, Dagger Moon, their album Citadel, bought, got Wolf Council, Ironclad, Gate Creeper, Gate Creeper, Sonoram, Deprivation, Neurosis, Fire Within Fires, and Trapped End, Crown Feral.

02:05:42.840 --> 02:06:10.500
If people are listening to this podcast to get albums to listen to, just throw your fucking player against the wall. Better chance of the keys landing on the ground. Just spell out these albums of bands. No, no, no. Just wait for Mark to post it. You don't have to. We do all the work for you. Talk to us on Twitter, at MetalheadsPod. Our member, Mark, builds a Spotify playlist for each episode. Where's Mark's fan?

02:06:17.060 --> 02:06:42.020
We got to get Mark on again. We haven't talked to him in far too long. Maybe we'll have him on when I'm out there. Yeah. All right. So I guess we're up to Jay now. All right. I got a few, including one that is quickly going to be way up on my list this year. I'll get to that one last. Testament Brotherhood of the Snake. I think it's a great record. That's not the killer one, but I think it's a great record. But Will said something to me this week and he was right about it and the lyrics on it are pretty bad.

02:06:43.280 --> 02:07:12.580
There's a couple really good lyrics, but there's a couple really bad lyrics. But it's one of their thrashiest records. I really like it. I didn't get around to listening to the new Big Business record, which I'm kind of the one who pitches them, but it was because I pre-ordered the record and I never got it and it pissed me off. But I finally put it on and it's pretty great. Big Business, it's almost a supergroup. It's the guys from Clutch. It's two guys that are in the Melvins. When they're not in the Melvins, it's a two-man band.

02:07:12.840 --> 02:07:42.560
called Big Business, just a drummer and a bass player, a singer, but they're super heavy and super cool. Okay, yeah. A record that I'm not, I guess I'm not surprised I'm super obsessed with, but I'm pleased at how good it is. I didn't know how good these guys were, and this would be our pal Galen's band, Trap Them. That record is going to be way up my list this year. Trap Them, Crown Feral. Holy God, it's heavy. It is so, so heavy. And then finally, one that I just discovered, because we got it in the box, and this is, I think John especially,

02:07:42.760 --> 02:08:12.320
will like this record. I think George will like this record, and I can't guarantee you other two fellas there. But the side project of the Witchcraft lead singer, it's called Pelander. It's all acoustic, and it's like Led Zeppelin three-sized. It is so good. When I go back and listen to, bear with me, Buke and John, Damnation, that was a cool attempt to go in that direction. There's been a lot of bands that have tried to capture that kind of weird 70s Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin acoustic feel.

02:08:12.340 --> 02:08:14.540
It's never been done better than this

02:08:15.020 --> 02:08:16.320
The band is called Pelander

02:08:16.620 --> 02:08:17.820
And the record is called Time

02:08:18.100 --> 02:08:20.420
I'm in on the Led Zeppelin 3 part right there

02:08:20.480 --> 02:08:21.440
Dude, it's gonna blow

02:08:21.520 --> 02:08:23.240
I'm telling you, it's in the box, John

02:08:23.280 --> 02:08:25.020
And it's gonna blow your mind, dude

02:08:25.040 --> 02:08:28.440
It's like one of the most beautiful, haunting, spooky, weird

02:08:28.660 --> 02:08:30.820
It's kind of like the first Witchcrack record

02:08:31.140 --> 02:08:31.860
Except that it's acoustic

02:08:32.260 --> 02:08:32.900
And better songs

02:08:33.460 --> 02:08:34.820
I'm stuck on this record

02:08:34.920 --> 02:08:36.960
It's acoustic and it's gonna be probably my top three

02:08:37.200 --> 02:08:37.380
Cool

02:08:37.500 --> 02:08:37.780
Nice

02:08:37.960 --> 02:08:38.960
Hey, just real quick

02:08:39.200 --> 02:08:40.400
Hey, Keith, is that a calico?

02:08:40.940 --> 02:09:09.300
No, Yoda's a snowshoe. Yoda. I got a signees running around here. If she wanders by, I'll show her to Yoda. My lazy ass is in the window sleeping. With that, I pass it on to you, Buk. I have a bunch. Let's put on dope smoker. We haven't got to George's part yet. I don't have George's bunch. I limit myself now. You fuckers.

02:09:10.920 --> 02:09:40.520
The New Ancients album, Voice of the Void. Yes. The tech deaf band, Beervum, their album, Illuminance. A band, a true metal sound. It's an album that came out a couple months ago, or maybe a month ago, Dawnbringer, their album, XX. Another true metal band, Spellcaster, Night Hides the World. That's a good one. And another true metal band I found, Wretch. Oh, yeah. That's the doom band formed from the wreckage of Gates of Slumber.

02:09:40.580 --> 02:10:10.220
Yep. And nobody's mentioned it yet. The new Chemist album Haunted. Yeah. It's a good album. It is fucking amazing. Yep. We touched on it earlier. The Anul Nothrak is brutal. I love it. Crowbar is really good. And what I've really been listening to in the rare few moments that I have that kind of is like a new Def Heaven to me. Oathbringer. Their album Raya. Raya, whatever it is. Female Frontier type of band.

02:10:10.260 --> 02:10:12.200
You guys won't listen to it, but I like it a lot.

02:10:12.860 --> 02:10:14.400
I listened to it when you posted it.

02:10:14.540 --> 02:10:16.740
Yeah, I listened to it a couple times before you posted it.

02:10:17.120 --> 02:10:17.420
Well, I hadn't.

02:10:17.880 --> 02:10:19.640
You brought it to my attention and I put it on.

02:10:19.660 --> 02:10:20.160
I did definitely.

02:10:20.380 --> 02:10:24.840
I think you described it perfectly just now, which doesn't necessarily mean I do or don't like it.

02:10:24.920 --> 02:10:25.320
I'll dig.

02:10:25.500 --> 02:10:29.160
I have to dig into it more, but I've been all the way through it once and I can see why you're attracted to it.

02:10:29.520 --> 02:10:30.420
Two more bands I forgot.

02:10:31.320 --> 02:10:34.280
Jay turned me on to this band with one track that he sent me.

02:10:34.660 --> 02:10:38.640
The newest Dead Revolution from Hammers of Misfortune.

02:10:38.880 --> 02:11:08.820
And Summerlands, their self-titled. Kind of a true metal kick I've been on. Right on. My first one coming to me thanks to our friend Greg reminded me that this was coming out. 40-watt sun, wider than the sky. Sort of a, well, it's kind of do me, but you know. Next one is one I found on Bandcamp, the Astroplex and their album The Chronicles of Azul Tar, which is like a cinematic death metal.

02:11:09.120 --> 02:11:38.860
It's kind of cool. Next up, The Chemist, the new one, Hunted. After that, there's this instrumental band called Monk and their album Black Earth Beneath. It's kind of, it's instrumental. It's almost like the Darkwave stuff I listen to, except it has guitars. It's very hypnotic. What was it called? Say the name again, Jordan. The band's called Monk. Okay. And the album's called Black Earth Beneath. Yeah. And then I have to thank Yanni

02:11:38.900 --> 02:12:08.420
from Perihelian Ship for my next one, Xanthocroid, Blessed He With Boils. After he recommended that, I went and picked that up. And it is awesome. It is like cinematic black metal. A lot of cinematic tonight. And then I also picked this one up. And I thought this was an interesting one. Joel Grind from Toxic Holocaust released an album called Equinox. And that is, it's like this whole new synth thing going on. It's kind of like John Carpenter music. It's just crazy instrumental synth stuff.

02:12:08.520 --> 02:12:37.360
And beyond that, I've been listening to a lot of non-metal stuff. A lot of the new Leonard Cohen, You Want It Darker, the new Nick Cave. Which, by the way, he's writing himself off as dead. I don't know if you read that recently. Leonard Cohen says, I don't think I have much time left. Oh, geez. Dio said that. He lasted a little while longer. Fair enough. But the new, yeah, You Want It Darker, great album. The new Nick Cave, Skeleton Tree, I've also been digging on that. And a whole lot of Bruce Springsteen, because I've been reading the book Bruce.

02:12:37.600 --> 02:13:06.920
And I just picked up Born to Run as well. The book Born to Run. I'm going to read that next. I'm a Hugh Springsteen fan. That's great. If you're doing the Nick Cave and the Leonard Cohen, I'm telling you, George, right now, Pelander is the record for you, dude. Oh, I'm sure it is. I mean, I love Witchcraft. And I listened to a little bit of it and I was like, oh yeah, this is good. That's why I put it in the box. So, all right, that's what I've been listening to. Let's move on to our personal recommendation. Keith, do you have an album you can recommend for us? Oh, shit.

02:13:07.620 --> 02:13:37.060
Yeah, you know, it would be an album by a local band that I mentioned earlier, actually, Ukitaru. Really kick-ass band from Milwaukee. Their album is called Plight of the Wanderer. I had to write it down because I didn't remember it. But a really good band from Milwaukee. Yeah, from Milwaukee. That's available on Bandcamp for five bucks.

02:14:06.620 --> 02:14:06.960
Yeah, I know.

02:14:08.020 --> 02:14:37.560
Okay. Are you in Madison now? No, no. I'm in San Francisco now, but I was born. Oh, okay. Kick ass. All right. Wait, wait, wait. Don't let him fool you. He's in Berkeley, California. Oh. Yeah, yeah. Hippie heaven. Totally. You know what? I was totally covering. You're absolutely right. Northeast of San Francisco. He thought he could fool everyone. See, I can say this. I'm fucking, I'm actually from San Francisco. If I could strip you and say I'm from the city, he's really from the fucking protest.

02:14:38.500 --> 02:14:38.600
Yeah.

02:14:40.200 --> 02:14:41.020
That's all right.

02:14:41.180 --> 02:14:43.000
I was actually doing that on purpose.

02:14:43.360 --> 02:14:43.720
You got me.

02:14:44.060 --> 02:14:48.320
Jay, are you like dodging like fucking street closures to get to Fieldworks?

02:14:49.760 --> 02:14:52.560
Yeah, it's I'm telling you, man.

02:14:52.760 --> 02:14:53.460
I'm telling you, John.

02:14:53.680 --> 02:14:55.160
That's my new favorite place.

02:14:55.520 --> 02:14:59.100
Yes, I bring up Fieldworks every time because Jay and I stopped there just on a whim.

02:14:59.400 --> 02:14:59.740
What is it?

02:14:59.900 --> 02:15:01.320
A place called Fieldworks Brewing.

02:15:01.400 --> 02:15:03.640
We had a fucking blast there.

02:15:03.800 --> 02:15:04.340
It's so much fun.

02:15:04.420 --> 02:15:05.580
It's good stuff, too.

02:15:05.780 --> 02:15:06.720
Everything they have is good.

02:15:06.780 --> 02:15:36.760
Speaking about having a blast, you will hear us on the OPEF episode. If we're in New York City, stop by, if you're in Midtown, stop by the Ginger Man. Oh, Dan. Ginger Man is famous. We had a fucking great time there. It's a franchise. It's all over the place up in the Northeast. Oh, is it? Oh, is it? All right, John, what are you listening to? Or sorry, your personal recommendation. I don't know what I'm talking about. All right. You know what I mean. I'm going back.

02:15:36.800 --> 02:16:06.620
Back to the 90s for a prog and a power fucking mega album as far as I'm concerned. If you're a big fan of this, then you'll enjoy this. If not, whatever. It's a band called Symphony X and it's a band called or album called The Divine Wings of Tragedy. Oh, no. Yes. Everyone goes with the Odyssey and I go with this one. This is the one that started it off for them. And it's infinitely better in my opinion. It's a little neoclassical. It's got a little Yngwie in there. But it's to me way better.

02:16:06.780 --> 02:16:35.559
anything they've ever done. It's the pinnacle of their career as far as I'm concerned. Awesome. Will? A band I mentioned earlier when I said what I was listening to, but Soliloquium and their album An Empty Frame. It's a great album. It's Opec-esque. Just check it out. It's part black metal, part death metal, part whatever.

02:16:36.800 --> 02:17:03.900
Yeah, check it out. Bukkaki just got Wilcockied. It's a soliloquium. It's like soliloquy, but soliloquy. So they made up a word. The name of the album is An Empty Frame. Check it out.

02:17:06.800 --> 02:17:36.700
If you're a Doom fan, this is one that people, everybody who likes Electric Wizard would just have a couple other records, but one of my favorites, nobody owns, it's called We Live. And there's like three of my favorite Doom songs of all time are on their records, so that's it. Electric Wizard, We Live. She stands alone on that one, I think. Yeah, always. I know. I am a card-carrying Electric Wizard fan. I know that a lot of people don't like them that much, but I love those guys. I'm a big Electric Wizard fan. There you go. I can always kind of will them. Okay, man. All right.

02:17:37.359 --> 02:18:06.120
How not the Odyssey? That's ridiculous. Man, that's going to be fine. He was holding that the whole time. It's not ridiculous, though. That's the beauty of it. It's not ridiculous. I love that he was holding on to that. He has not. He's had a little aneurysm. He's been just waiting to explode. You know, we talked about our festival list earlier. We talked about bands who went on it. My headliner easily could be this band. Amorphous. I'm going to go with my favorite album by them, Skyforger. Oh. Tales from the Thousand Lakes, man. Old school.

02:18:06.800 --> 02:18:36.099
If anybody said this podcast, we all agree. We never agree. Yeah, quite the opposite. So what I'm gathering from this podcast is Keith likes the same beers I like and the same albums I like. Yes. So I'm going to Milwaukee. Milwaukee. Milwaukee. I love that first Amorphous album, man. Well, the first two. At Death Fest last year, we saw them play Tales Start to Finish. It was awesome. Oh, I would have loved to have seen that.

02:18:36.800 --> 02:18:37.280
Awesome. Yep.

02:18:37.550 --> 02:18:38.160
Ah, shit.

02:18:38.679 --> 02:18:41.460
That's one of my favorite metal albums of all time.

02:18:41.660 --> 02:18:43.099
That's in my top five.

02:18:44.510 --> 02:18:47.300
And, you know, they don't quite sound like that anymore.

02:18:47.740 --> 02:18:48.559
Not quite at all.

02:18:49.320 --> 02:18:50.000
No, no.

02:18:50.330 --> 02:18:53.860
But I fucking love that record, and I would love to hear it live.

02:18:54.519 --> 02:18:55.080
They did well.

02:18:55.460 --> 02:18:57.059
Oh, there's a U.S. tour coming up, too.

02:18:57.280 --> 02:18:57.559
Yeah.

02:18:57.780 --> 02:18:59.019
I forget who it was with.

02:19:00.199 --> 02:19:01.900
Swallow the Sun, I think.

02:19:02.280 --> 02:19:03.059
Yeah, but they did.

02:19:03.200 --> 02:19:03.620
It is.

02:19:03.780 --> 02:19:33.420
Yes, but then they announced more dates with somebody else in a trend. Yeah, I think for our date, and I think they're playing a couple dates around here, aren't they? Baltimore and D.C.? Maybe so. I know Baltimore. And I don't think they're coming anywhere in my area. I think the closest is down in Southern California. Oh, boy. Yeah, it's a bummer. Oh, boy. Yeah, yeah. My recommendation is a band called Lotus Thief, and their album Grammarie, or Grammarie, however you pronounce it. That album is awesome.

02:19:33.780 --> 02:19:58.460
It is. It's sort of in the vein of like Sub Rosa. Sorta. Maybe not quite as heavy. A smidge. A smidge. And I'm probably generalizing them too much. It's because they both have female singers and they're both really kind of heavy and doomy. But, you know, I just got my copy. I just got my copy in the mail today, actually. Yeah. Of vinyl? No. Okay. CD. Yeah. I was going to say, oh, I didn't know they had that. So right on. Yeah. That's a great album. Good selection.

02:20:10.619 --> 02:20:11.420
All right.

02:20:12.480 --> 02:20:14.800
We're going to move on to our vinyl or other purchases.

02:20:15.200 --> 02:20:15.860
I don't know.

02:20:16.880 --> 02:20:19.940
Keith said he doesn't do vinyl, but if you, have you bought anything lately?

02:20:20.920 --> 02:20:21.540
Not really.

02:20:22.920 --> 02:20:24.360
All right, then moving on.

02:20:24.520 --> 02:20:25.000
No, I'm up.

02:20:25.380 --> 02:20:26.160
It's John's turn.

02:20:26.640 --> 02:20:28.440
Times have been tough, man.

02:20:28.820 --> 02:20:29.100
Next.

02:20:29.939 --> 02:20:33.380
To go out and buy some unearthed elves so Keith can buy more music.

02:20:35.040 --> 02:21:02.760
All right, John. All right, so it's me. I only have two, and they're recent purchases. One is a finally released on vinyl. It's an album called In Motion by The Gathering, which is a live album from the Mandeline and Nighttime Birds period. They have a couple of different tours they put together on one release through Century Media, which I think was a little controversial for the band being released. But anyway, it's a very cool album. And then I broke the bank.

02:21:02.900 --> 02:21:32.620
As soon as I got the promo to the latest Opeth, I broke the bank and bought the Sorceress Box, which came with every fucking thing I did not need ever in the world, like a peacock's fucking feather. But I got the vinyl, which I already had from the Gilda Foundation or whatever the Gilda thing. But it came with the double disc. It came with the 5.1 DVD and stuff. So I had the ability. Can you listen to the 5.1 stuff? I have 5.1. Yeah. So is it as cool?

02:21:33.399 --> 02:22:00.920
I don't know that I've ever experienced that. In this case, I can't say if it is as cool or not because I haven't listened to it yet. I just got it. But my guess is that it's going to sound great. And broadly speaking, though, it's kind of a cool thing. Yeah, it's the only band I break the bank for when that stuff comes out. So everybody else, fuck them. But with them, I buy everything. I bet you we could think of something that you'd pay the money for. But that's... Oh, yeah, easily. You're full of shit. Exactly.

02:22:05.601 --> 02:22:32.000
That's me then, and I don't have a lot to record. Did you go well? No, I didn't. Almost everything that I buy is typically because I don't physically purchase vinyl. So what am I listening to today is typically what my vinyl purchases are. I do have three other ones to include, which I bought tonight. The Crowbar, The Serpent Only Lies, The Serpent Only Lies, My Buddies in Borracho, Atacama,

02:22:32.680 --> 02:22:38.060
out of commas the new album that you can pre-order which will be out i think in december

02:22:38.380 --> 02:22:43.880
we had a heavy metal night at atlas brew works my brewery for this album released it and then uh

02:22:44.360 --> 02:22:49.200
charred walls of the dam came out with new album creatures watching over the dead i bought that one

02:22:49.500 --> 02:22:55.800
so a whole lot of what am i listening to combined with purchases and i always have to like separate a few

02:22:55.860 --> 02:23:01.199
of them out just because to pretend that i purchased stuff so anyway that's my thing you know i'd like to um

02:23:01.200 --> 02:23:27.720
You just mentioned Atlas, Will, and I just want to take a moment to publicly thank you for this very generous box of beer and stuff you sent me a few weeks back. It was above and beyond a gift to have received, so thank you for that, my friend. Hey, dude, I felt bad because mine was so far, not so far, long overdue. It was long overdue. No, it was welcome when it arrived, and it was completely awesome, so thanks for that, dude.

02:23:31.220 --> 02:23:37.700
can kill your liver so i didn't pick up a lot between now and the last time in fact i

02:23:37.840 --> 02:23:42.160
still have three vinyl to remember i got a few things coming but those will be mentioned next time but i got

02:23:42.600 --> 02:23:47.300
a cheap copy of balls to the wall i didn't have that on vinyl i found it for like five bucks i picked

02:23:47.300 --> 02:23:52.960
it up except balls to the wall that is i picked up a copy of saxon power in the glory or as george would

02:23:53.060 --> 02:23:59.500
say saxon power in the glory and i also because i'm so obsessed with it had to get a copy of that trap them

02:23:59.520 --> 02:24:00.240
record and that's it.

02:24:00.360 --> 02:24:00.680
Bukaki.

02:24:02.560 --> 02:24:02.660
Oh,

02:24:02.880 --> 02:24:03.580
path sorceress.

02:24:03.740 --> 02:24:04.200
All I've got.

02:24:04.360 --> 02:24:05.880
Did you get any special package or anything?

02:24:06.120 --> 02:24:07.360
I don't have money for that.

02:24:07.460 --> 02:24:08.180
Just the pink vinyl.

02:24:08.600 --> 02:24:08.700
Well,

02:24:08.880 --> 02:24:09.020
okay.

02:24:09.160 --> 02:24:10.120
Is that the Gilda thing?

02:24:10.200 --> 02:24:10.980
So you got,

02:24:11.200 --> 02:24:13.000
you got the pink package is what you're saying.

02:24:13.360 --> 02:24:13.600
Yeah.

02:24:14.440 --> 02:24:15.020
In my,

02:24:15.520 --> 02:24:18.480
in my ADD mess of a fucking brain,

02:24:18.780 --> 02:24:21.400
I took out the first record and I've been spinning it.

02:24:21.400 --> 02:24:23.060
I don't know where I put the sleeve.

02:24:23.320 --> 02:24:23.720
So yeah,

02:24:23.880 --> 02:24:24.500
but that,

02:24:24.640 --> 02:24:26.200
that packaging is beautiful though.

02:24:26.380 --> 02:24:26.580
Oh,

02:24:26.700 --> 02:24:27.120
it's gorgeous.

02:24:27.380 --> 02:24:27.920
It's gorgeous.

02:24:28.160 --> 02:24:29.140
Is that the Gilda thing?

02:24:29.200 --> 02:24:59.080
You got one of those things? Yeah, the one, yeah. Okay, all right. What's the different? What in particular is different about the packaging? It's pink vinyl. It benefits. It benefits some house. Yeah, it's a whole, it's, yeah. Is that Gilda Radner? Is it the Cancer Foundation thing? Okay. Whose husband just died a little while back. Yeah, Gene Wilder. So now we need a Wilder Foundation. So it'll be like multicolored, like the Chocolate Factory. Pink and purple. Yeah, that's, yeah. Yeah, purple, that's better. That's good. Because I am your host, you are my guest, what do you like to do?

02:24:59.200 --> 02:25:27.800
Yes, I'm in. I don't know. Play chess? Screw. How about we play chess? New water, blazing saddles. Yes, yes. Let's all sit around the campfire and eat beans. I'd say you had enough as a tagger. Yeah, George is like, God damn it, they're drinking beer again. So I actually have a fair amount of stuff this time. I've got the vinyl for Ancient Voice of the Void.

02:25:29.200 --> 02:25:30.040
The Dönounce

02:26:01.160 --> 02:26:01.480
Teratalia?

02:26:01.960 --> 02:26:02.020
Sure.

02:26:02.800 --> 02:26:05.900
Again, I assume it probably doesn't actually have the question mark at the end, but yeah.

02:26:06.420 --> 02:26:07.320
No, mine does actually.

02:26:08.640 --> 02:26:09.420
It's a special edition.

02:26:10.420 --> 02:26:10.920
What is that?

02:26:11.060 --> 02:26:13.640
Are you, I haven't heard you talk much about that record, George.

02:26:14.060 --> 02:26:15.460
Yeah, well, I mean, I like it.

02:26:15.460 --> 02:26:19.100
I don't know that I like it quite to the extent that you and John do yet anyway.

02:26:19.380 --> 02:26:19.580
Fair enough.

02:26:19.660 --> 02:26:20.400
But it is a cool album.

02:26:20.640 --> 02:26:22.700
Yeah, J and R are disciples, definitely, I think.

02:26:22.800 --> 02:26:23.360
Yeah, big time.

02:26:23.580 --> 02:26:23.640
Yeah.

02:26:23.760 --> 02:26:23.840
Yeah.

02:26:24.020 --> 02:26:28.520
Well, I picked it up basically on the strength of your guys' opinion, so there you go.

02:26:28.680 --> 02:26:58.660
Hey George drink some beers and then put the headphones on and hang out seriously. Well you got on vinyl too so let it let it fly. Yeah so that's what Jay and I did we drank some beers and we hung out. That's exactly right we did the field work and we had that rolling out out here on vinyl. Yeah right on. See I also got the the Paul Bearer EP Fair and Fury. How cool is that by the way? I got the Sub Rosa for this we fought the battle of ages. I just got the Testament Brotherhood of the Snake and then my Vardruna order arrived. I got their first album Gap

02:26:58.700 --> 02:27:02.080
and their newest album Ragnarok.

02:27:03.340 --> 02:27:07.400
How cool is that Paul Bearer EP, by the way? I like it, man.

02:27:08.180 --> 02:27:11.180
I forgot what the songs are on there now, but they're all covers.

02:27:11.500 --> 02:27:15.880
Yeah, well, Fury, I don't think is a cover, but the rest of them are covers.

02:27:16.300 --> 02:27:17.360
What was it? Which one, Will, was it?

02:27:17.660 --> 02:27:19.460
I don't think Fear and Fury is a cover.

02:27:19.780 --> 02:27:20.800
No, that's one of their songs.

02:27:21.460 --> 02:27:22.440
What are the other ones, though?

02:27:22.440 --> 02:27:23.460
Can one of you guys remind me?

02:27:23.740 --> 02:27:24.700
They're clearly covers.

02:27:25.260 --> 02:27:54.220
Well, when we saw them live with Baroness a couple months ago, they definitely played Fear and Fury as a single. Oh, they do Over and Over, which is the closing song on Mob Rules. And then the Alice Cooper thing, Love You to Death. Those are great choices for cover tunes. Yeah. All right, we're in the home stretch. Let's do our deep tracks. Keith, you got a deep track? Yeah, I have two, actually. I don't know if I can do two, but I'll do them.

02:27:54.760 --> 02:28:24.240
All right, I'll do them in halftime, and that way it'll even out. So I tried to think of bands that have songs that are well-known. You're already pissed. Shit. But also have songs that are not well-known. You're on the right track. And the first one that came to mind was, I don't know how metal they are, but Faith No More. There's some fans here. Yeah, I don't know how far back we're allowed to go, but... As long as you need. All right. Yeah, I'm old.

02:28:24.280 --> 02:28:54.260
I like old music and what you know Faith No More is known for their hits and everything but they have this fucking kick-ass song on the Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey soundtrack called The Perfect Crime That Rules and it's a b-side and every time I talk to somebody about Faith No More I'm like I mentioned that song and nobody knows what I'm talking about yeah that's definitely a deep track that's the definition of deep it's a it's a fucking kick-ass song and

02:28:54.280 --> 02:29:24.260
It's so hard to talk to people about things like that and they're so wrong, aren't they? It is. You don't know what you're missing, dude. They're wrong and they don't know what I'm talking about and they're full of shit because they need to hear that. It's a great tune. My other one that was kind of tied for that was Fight. You know, Fight. Rob Halford Fight. Yes. Everybody knows Fight for Into the Pit, but I think Nailed to the Gun is one of the fucking best metal

02:29:24.300 --> 02:29:26.880
songs ever made. It's one of my favorite tunes.

02:29:28.859 --> 02:29:30.220
It's just kind of...

02:29:30.280 --> 02:29:30.860
Yeah, yeah.

02:29:31.480 --> 02:29:35.100
I saw them one time in Tucson. I lived in Tucson for a while.

02:29:35.400 --> 02:29:39.000
It was in this little club and they brought enough sound equipment to knock down a stadium.

02:29:39.380 --> 02:29:42.660
I'll never forget, dude, they had the doors closed and the doors were just going...

02:29:44.619 --> 02:29:48.140
From the just intense sound. It was a great show, too.

02:29:48.460 --> 02:29:50.580
They used to play it on every once in a while because he lived in Phoenix.

02:29:50.960 --> 02:29:52.120
He probably still lives in Phoenix.

02:29:52.480 --> 02:30:22.320
So Fight really kind of used to play the Arizona area quite a bit. Yeah, great, great song, though. Just killer riffs and really catchy. Were you a Fight fan, George? Not so much. Yeah, I mean, it's not amazing stuff, but it was like cool to have some Halford thing out there, you know? Where are we at here? That would be John. All right, so I'm going to go even older. Way back to 1981, an album I actually saw the tour for. That's Black Sabbaths off Mob Rules, a song called Slippin' Away. Jay mentioned over and over, and I was like, yes.

02:30:22.480 --> 02:30:51.880
Another Mob Rules fan. Oh, I love Mob Rules. I like it as much as Heaven and Hell, to be honest with you. So do I, equally, yeah. It's heavier, too. Yep, that's my deep track. Way deep. Way, man. Fucking in the abyss with Cognac. Into the Cognac. It doesn't go back all the way to 1981, but it does go back to 1989 with the Cro-Mags and off their album Best Wishes song Crush the Demoniac.

02:30:52.480 --> 02:31:18.460
You guys are a bunch of hippies. I'm surprised you like them. They're like these vegetarian skinhead kind of peacemongers. Socially responsible. I fucking love that album. It's a great album. I love every song on it. And Crash and Demoniac. Absolutely amazing. John, the slipping away is to mob rules as country girl is to heaven and hell. Yes.

02:31:22.480 --> 02:31:52.440
Just leave us alone. No, I have a song we like. My deep track is I think Buke will be pleased about this. I don't mention a lot of powery, metal-y stuff, even though I wouldn't call these guys power necessarily. But off of Falconer's Northwind album, Waltz with the Dead. Ooh. I love that song. Would never have expected you to go there. Yeah, I love Falconer, dude. We've never talked about it before, but I got all their records. Except for, also, Buke would be proud of me, except for the ones where they just

02:31:52.460 --> 02:32:22.440
speak Finnish or whatever it is because I don't like those ones. Wow. Wow. Wow. Wow. Swedish. Swedish. Yeah. The last I think the last two were all in Swedish and it just didn't work for me. Wow. And. Hell yeah. And I think I'm the only one who's ever actually seen them live. You're the one who said the champs. Rubber in. Rubber in. It was at Brock Popper in other words right. Yeah. I saw them live. Yeah. They've never. I don't think they've played anywhere else in the States have they. I think that's it. Yeah. And that was supposedly their last show again. Are they. I was going to say

02:32:22.460 --> 02:32:51.900
They're defunct now then, huh? How long ago was that? Last year. Oh, it was last year, okay. Not this last year, the year before. So, top that, Duke. You hit your mute, bud. Can you hear me? I didn't hit anything. I must have unplugged the cable. The only thing that's been on my mind since John and I saw them, real quick, it's a deep track, Opeth by The Pain I See in Others. It's such a deep track, hearing it live just blew us away. That was the highlight of the night, yes. And the closing track off of Deliverance.

02:32:52.480 --> 02:33:22.420
Did anybody open for them when you saw them? Or was it just them? Yeah, some country band did. No, it was Thor, that's right. No, actually, I think it was ZZ Top that opened. I was going to say that I was going to make a joke, but I didn't want to piss you guys off and just say this is the bands that used to sound different to her. Actually, Jay did piss us off because we didn't watch them. No, Jay. I thought they were going to Ralfest. The four of us went to go see the Opeth and the S.W.O.R.D. show, and every single one of us came away thinking, like,

02:33:22.460 --> 02:33:52.260
So the opening act was like a country band, right? Well, it's funny because my friend TR, who has spent some time on the podcast... This guy would not shut up. He just talks and talks and talks. TR's a very nice guy. And even TR was like, yeah, I'm a huge fan of the sword and I'm just fucking not digging this at all tonight. Even he was down on them. It was like a country revival band playing that night. If you're there just to watch a band perform,

02:33:52.460 --> 02:34:22.440
and you'll be impressed by their musicianship, then they're a great band. But if you're there for the music... They took a hard left turn, man. I mean, like, they literally are just sort of like ZZ Top band now. But the thing is, they were going up, up, up, up, up. I don't know what caused them to be like, you know what, guys? Let's go this way. Yeah. I don't understand it either. Those first three albums were just off... First four, actually, were off the charts. They were great. There's a rumor going around that they talked to Lars Ulrich. And...

02:34:22.460 --> 02:34:52.160
He said, hey, you know what? If you just cut your hair and make shitty music for a while, you can get a lot more popular. You'll alienate a lot of people. That's true, though. He is actually a friend and a fan of theirs. They opened for him. At his request, he was like, let's get this band on. I rest my case. There you go. George, you got a deep track? Yeah. From the Holy Diver album by Dio. This is invisible. I'm not sure how deep it is. It was just 18.

02:34:55.359 --> 02:35:22.440
I know that song. I'll tune in. I can go away. Oh, yeah. That's a great one. There's no bad song for that record. Hey, Jay, do you know why he sings that song? So you don't have to? That's what we say about our bass player. That's what they say about you. No, fair enough. But when our bass player sings, somebody asked me if our bass player could sing because he kind of shouts in the microphone sometimes. I said, well, he's a

02:35:22.480 --> 02:35:52.440
He's a good bass player. There's no bad songs on Holy Diver. But that is a deep track by We Shall. All right, before we go, I want to tell you again to make sure to check out Keith on Bandcamp. Pick up Unearthed Elf in the Catacombs Abyss. And his other band, Arctic Sleep, is also on there, available as well. Hey, fellas, it was nice of you to have me on so late. I'm sorry I was late. We had serious internet issues over here, but I'm back up and running. So thanks for letting me sneak

02:35:52.460 --> 02:36:21.700
Anything you want to say before we go, Keith? Not really. This has been great. Thank you. All right. Well, make sure to check us out on SoundCloud. We're on Facebook. We're on Twitter. You can check us out on Instagram and YouTube. We're on Stitcher and WeAreMetalHeads.com. You can find me on Twitter at DiscipleOVMetal. I'm at OpethFan.

02:36:26.639 --> 02:36:51.840
I love it every time he says it. It always sounds like some really bad sex position to me every time. You know, I could have been born in 1969. It could be that. Anthony Weiner's like Twitter name. It has to do with 15 year olds. This is the Appalachian Trail. That's on the Appalachian Trail, if you know what I'm saying. Right.

02:36:52.480 --> 02:36:53.500
Yes, yes.

02:36:53.900 --> 02:36:54.500
Carly's danger.

02:36:54.860 --> 02:36:55.140
All right.

02:36:55.290 --> 02:36:56.820
Well, that's it for this time.

02:36:56.920 --> 02:36:57.960
We'll talk to you next time.

02:36:58.280 --> 02:36:59.020
Thanks for coming on, Keith.

02:36:59.220 --> 02:37:00.420
Yeah, thank you for having me.

02:37:00.630 --> 02:37:01.020
Thank you.

02:37:01.160 --> 02:37:01.680
It's been fun.
