00:00:02.879 --> 00:00:26.800
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, metal's my religion, and yeah, it's my dope. Standing in the thunder on stage in the pouring metal rain. What a feeling, baby, the lights are exploding.

00:00:56.260 --> 00:00:59.140
Hello and welcome to the Metalheads Podcast. My name is George.

00:00:59.380 --> 00:01:27.300
I'm Buke. This is Jay. This is Will. I'm John. Also joining us are Zach and Dustin from Utkiaru, if I'm getting that right. You are. Listeners may recall our last episode with Keith from Unearthed Elf and Arctic Sleep. If you do, then you may know that we asked Keith to recommend any local bands from the Milwaukee area, and Utkiaru was his recommendation. So I checked him out on Bandcamp, and I loved what I heard, and decided to get in touch. So now here we are.

00:01:29.440 --> 00:01:57.760
Introduce yourselves and tell us what you do in the band. I'm Zach. I do the vocals and play bass. I'm Dustin. I play guitar and I try to get better every time, but I do my best. Zach, let's keep these answers alphabetical order from now on. You'll be going last, Zach. Jumping right in there. Sheesh. The Z. Sounds good. You don't have to listen to him, by the way. I got a lot of rules. Nah, but we ignore them.

00:01:59.380 --> 00:02:27.820
Anyway, why don't we start out by having you give us some background on the band. I know you guys earlier this year released your first album, The Plight of Wanderers. So just sort of, you know, where'd you guys start out? How'd you get together? All that fun info. So just some background is Zach and I have been friends for a very long time and we grew up together. Noel the drummer, who is unable to be here today, was a bandmate of Zach's in a band called Arbor.

00:02:29.380 --> 00:02:59.020
And eventually I was brought into the fold. If you want to get into that, we can talk about that. It's up to you. We're easy on it, so just let it flow. Well, we had a chance to play together, the three of us, on a tour a couple summers ago with the band Arbor. And we just had such a good time together, and we felt we really meshed musically on stage as well as creatively that we felt we wanted to write some music for a separate project.

00:02:59.380 --> 00:03:28.720
So that's what we did. And less than a year after playing together for the first time, we had the album done and out. So it's been great so far. Excellent. So do you guys get some pretty creative pronunciations of your name from people when they're trying to talk to you or anything like that? Any good ones? You know, people try their hardest and we have to expect it. I wouldn't have had a chance if it weren't for the phonetic pronunciation you have on your Facebook page. I was like, no idea. And then I saw that and I was like, all right.

00:03:28.980 --> 00:03:58.740
And then, of course, it's actually in some of the lyrics. And so I heard it in the song. So I was like, okay, that sounds about right. So we kind of embrace being the U band or, you know, boot crew or whatever you want to say. You know, as long as people are enjoying what they hear in the music, we don't really care that much. And hopefully they're curious enough to ask, you know, how do you say it? Sure. It's cool. What's the meaning behind the band name? I know because I read about it, but listeners don't know. Well, we were struggling to come up with a band name that really

00:03:58.780 --> 00:04:28.380
spoke to each band member. And I believe Noel proposed this as the band name. And it means nighttime, I'm sorry, pre-dawn anxiety or nighttime sorrow. And it's an old Anglo-Saxon word. And I guess, you know, aside from that description, it's kind of that feeling of lying awake at night, just with a general sense of worry and anxiety, whether it be something very specific or just general things.

00:04:28.500 --> 00:04:58.340
and that kind of nighttime feeling where it's kind of like the twilight zone. You know, you may be perfectly rational during the day, but maybe the smallest thing can kind of creep into your mind and just rattle around in there and unnerve you a bit. So we felt, yeah, we felt that was all something we had experienced, but also something that if we could tap into that, even just a little bit musically could be kind of cool. So, yeah. I hate to ask a band to label themselves, but where do you think you fall on the musical spectrum? It's kind of black metal.

00:04:59.520 --> 00:05:28.380
I think we have different answers for that, each band member. So I want to know what Zach has to say about that, actually. I guess I would say we have some black metal influence and some death metal influence, definitely. So I don't know. I would say blackened melodic death metal. I guess. I don't know. There's just... Just for the sake of the listeners, I mean, I know when Keith was talking about,

00:05:28.500 --> 00:05:57.500
you, he said, like, melodic black metal, I think. But the more I listen to it, I'm like, you know, there's a little bit of death in there maybe. But it's really kind of progressive for black metal as well. I mean, it's certainly not Dark Throne, you know. Yeah. I would say it's kind of in the general, man, I hope I'm not going to break your hearts here. But I think it's in the general zip code of, like, Behemoth to me a little bit, you know. It kind of pulls in a lot of different elements that they pull in. And they don't sound terribly similar to them, but I feel like your structures are similar.

00:05:58.060 --> 00:06:26.880
And you also kind of are darting around within multiple genres per song. I feel like Behemoth does that a lot. So they'll have a real, real deathy song and then a real, real black song. So anyway, I feel like for our listeners, it's somewhat like that. I agree actually a lot with that comparison to Behemoth. Are you a fan? Yeah, actually. And there's a huge distinction if you just listen to Behemoth and then us sonically. They have such a big, deep, heavy, boomy sound in some songs.

00:06:27.580 --> 00:06:57.480
And ours is so stripped down compared to that. Okay, fair enough. But exactly like you said with the song structures and things like that though, I think that's right on. Do you guys find that easier to write music being able to kind of just not bounce in between genres but to kind of incorporate everything together rather being honed in just to like say just black metal or to death metal? I mean, we all write actually, all three of us in the band write very different music. And then we try to bring it together and that's what you hear is kind of the result of that mixture. That might explain it.

00:06:57.560 --> 00:07:26.640
And maybe each one of you is kind of bringing your own thing there then. Totally. And Zach, I'm sure, has something to say about this too. But at least for me, I was definitely setting out not to write in a specific genre. I guess I had tried to do that before, write a melodic death metal song. And you're just never satisfied with the result because you're comparing yourself to some standard. And once you stop doing that, you unlock a lot of creativity that you denied yourself before.

00:07:26.680 --> 00:07:56.540
Yeah, I like listening to stuff that it spans genres or sub-genres or whatever you want to say. And that's why you end up with technical melodic, blah-da-blah-da-blah-da-blah-da-metal. But if you just devise categorization, that's awesome. Well, you have a quality that I like, not exclusively, but most of the bands I listen to, which is it's a little more rooted in the past. I don't feel like you guys are a real modern, modern version of a genre. And it could be the recent past I'm talking.

00:07:56.700 --> 00:08:26.340
about. And so in that sense, it kind of reminds me a little bit of goat horror or something like that, too. I can really feel some older band influence in there. So actually, I'd be curious to know what some of the older bands that you like are. Sure. I actually have a specific question about that. I was going to do it later, but why not now? What artists inspired you to become a musician and what artists inspire you now? This is for both of you.

00:08:26.700 --> 00:08:56.280
Okay. Okay. Um, you want to go Dustin or? Well, I mean, it's a ton of stuff, you know, we both love music. Um, but I guess there's a couple that I keep coming back to and they're not necessarily even metal. Um, Kenny Rogers. Can I just guess Kenny Rogers? Yeah. I mean, I, my, my father plays guitar, not professionally or anything, but just around the house when I was young, he was always plinking around on a guitar. Um, so from his influence, I started listening to a ton of blues stuff. Um, and so blues guitar,

00:08:57.360 --> 00:08:58.500
influences what I write.

00:09:00.120 --> 00:09:03.220
Not to cut you off there, that's interesting. Just real quick, I want to throw this in.

00:09:03.400 --> 00:09:08.620
In the last song, Searching for the Dawn, there's definitely something different about that song from the rest of the album.

00:09:09.780 --> 00:09:12.960
I'm glad you brought that up. I was going to get to that, so you kind of stole it from me.

00:09:13.720 --> 00:09:16.900
You saw a little bit more on that, and it's a little bit different pace on the song.

00:09:18.020 --> 00:09:21.180
I have to add to that, John, too, which was one of the things that really stood out to me.

00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:51.380
The solos are a little more pentatonic, scaly, which is what I prefer, by the way, which is also very behemoth and many other bands besides. That's sort of like we're trying to play in every minor key weird mode we can find. And that's a very old school thing, too. But in any case, you were influenced in some, like your dad's blues playing and blues played around the house. What else? Yeah, I mean, totally that stuff. And branching off from there, it's kind of a natural progression through classic rock. So, I mean, I still listen to Blue Oyster Cult and Jethro Tull.

00:09:51.400 --> 00:10:18.800
You're speaking our language. Pretty much every day. And you know, getting into metal, it was first, you know, of course the entry bands, Metallica and Iron Maiden, and then from there, just things that are slightly more esoteric. So Alcest was really the first black metal band I listened to because they're on that really extreme melodic side of that stuff. But yeah, as far as older bands, I could go on and on.

00:10:21.400 --> 00:10:51.380
stuff is still ringing in my ears every time I pick up a guitar. So definitely that just as much as anything new and strictly metal coming out today is it for me at least. What about you Zach? Well I guess the two first artists that I listened to that were heavier that I remember were I had two of my dad's records Black Sabbath, We Sold Our Soul for Rock and Roll and ZZ Top Eliminator and those two I mean blew my mind you know. And then

00:10:51.400 --> 00:11:21.180
My dad is always and always has been a huge Neil Young fan. So I don't know when I write stuff, you know, that's always, you know, an influence on me. But as far as writing goes, Noel, because we both live fairly close to each other. So when we write stuff, we're always together. Usually Noel is actually very good at placing riffs together that, you know, we'll be jamming and I'll, you know, write something or have something presented to him. And he'll say, you know, why don't you try playing it?

00:11:21.400 --> 00:11:51.360
and it'll turn out way better and i never would have thought of that so to give him some credit because he's not here yeah um very good at that hey on a zz top eliminator how fucking great is the song under pressure jesus yeah i want to go on the record and say that every time we bring on a metal band they keep bringing up they listen to the music i listen to on the side as well you mentioned neil young boyster call i'm liking this every week it's something different and it's always bands i listen to that maybe these guys do maybe they

00:11:51.400 --> 00:12:21.140
I don't know. I'm a huge Neil Young fan. I like hearing that. Excellent. My daughter is sitting here with me and she wants to know if you guys like Black Sabbath. Of course. That's her favorite band. What's her favorite song again? D.O. era Sabbath. Fairies Wear Boots is her favorite song. Oh, okay. She likes Tinkerbell and Tinkerbell wears boots. And she's a fairy. Just slightly different than the real meaning, right? Yeah. Just a little bit. She's being shy.

00:12:22.060 --> 00:12:50.920
It's also worth saying, actually, along with the question you asked, that Noel is very jazz influenced compared to Zach and I. So, you know, whether it's more popular jazzy kind of fusion stuff like Frank Zappa or, you know, much stranger esoteric or very progressive stuff. So he's your Cliff Burton. That I don't even know. Kind of. The one that bring, you know, different stuff. Yeah, kind of. And even though he's not,

00:12:50.940 --> 00:13:18.760
and the one picking the notes all the time, which he certainly helps us do that. But just his experimentation with different patterns definitely makes Zach and I think differently about how we approach our instruments. So we wouldn't be writing the same songs if he weren't in the band. Excellent. All right. So you guys are a trio, and you said that you all do songwriting. So what's your process? Do you guys just each come up with something and then throw it in the pot? Or how do you guys build your songs?

00:13:20.920 --> 00:13:50.120
Because I live in St. Paul, Minnesota, Zach and Noel live close to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, there's a distance and bridging that distance has been an interesting challenge. So in a lot of ways, it has been us individually coming up with things, seeing how they either gel together or don't, and when we can be together, you know, kind of going from there. I guess with the newer stuff we're kind of working on at this moment, I've come up with some demos, you know, I send them off to Zach and Noel, what do you think?

00:13:50.180 --> 00:14:19.180
They give me suggestions. Maybe I revise some things, send them off again. So it's just a constant back and forth process. And we want it to be that way. I mean, even if there's a song I like that I've written myself, I know from experience now because of the last album that it will be better when Zach and Noel rearrange it however they think it would be best served. So yeah, totally team effort, even if individual parts are created within individual band members.

00:14:19.260 --> 00:14:26.120
How did you guys get hooked up across the miles? Or did you move away or something? Yeah, so

00:14:26.780 --> 00:14:30.180
Beck and I have been friends since we were young and then I went off to college

00:14:30.980 --> 00:14:32.420
in Minnesota and

00:14:32.860 --> 00:14:34.640
have stayed here. I mean, I love the

00:14:34.660 --> 00:14:36.720
Twin Cities and I'm extremely

00:14:37.060 --> 00:14:38.700
reluctant to move back to Wisconsin

00:14:39.680 --> 00:14:40.740
for a variety

00:14:40.760 --> 00:14:42.100
of reasons. All that cheese.

00:14:43.300 --> 00:14:44.320
Mainly Surly beer?

00:14:45.300 --> 00:14:46.420
Well, Surly's

00:14:47.580 --> 00:14:48.480
pretty awesome.

00:14:49.080 --> 00:15:18.940
Although cheese is a powerful motivator as well. I grew up in Michigan, so we like making fun of Wisconsin. And I grew up in Wisconsin. Speaking of Surly, I saw Zach, you put your pint glass up, and Dustin, you live in the Twin Cities. So are you guys like frenemies now? Because Dustin, you can get Surly. And can you get it, Zach, in Wisconsin? I can, yep. Actually, I work at a liquor store. Very nice. So how did you feel about Todd leaving Surly?

00:15:19.080 --> 00:15:49.020
and move into Three Floyds. Well, it'll definitely be interesting to see what Three Floyds can do with him. I'm sure they'll make excellent beers with him. But from what I heard, it was probably the right move. But I don't know all the details. Is that another way of saying he was asked to leave? It sounds like they fired his wife and he's like, F you guys. Oh, really? Okay. So Will is our resident metal brew head. He actually works at a brewery.

00:15:49.120 --> 00:16:19.040
And he writes beer reviews for our website. Oh, excellent. Hence the questions. Yeah. Okay. He's not just like, you know, obsessed with beer. I mean, he is obsessed with beer, but there's a good reason for it. Yeah. Beer and metal. So Dustin, I've heard that you have a good, clean singing voice. Why didn't we hear any of that on the album? You know, I try my best. Good? I don't know who told you that. I was just doing some research and it was in an interview. Sure. We actually had planned on it and kind of came out of it.

00:16:19.080 --> 00:16:46.880
It came down to studio time. And when we tried some things up, they weren't clicking with everything we had laid down already. And it just wasn't fitting together the ways we anticipated it would. And I mean, we kind of just made some snap decisions and we really liked what we had already. We didn't want to lay something down we weren't completely satisfied with on top of it. So we said, OK, this is what we're going with. Maybe next time it'll happen.

00:16:46.960 --> 00:17:16.800
Yeah. It's not like the album's lacking for it, but the kind of songs that you write, I could definitely see that being another element that would just expand your sound and make it even better. Totally. And we're definitely aiming to have some, again, we'll see what happens, but we're aiming to have some for some songs coming up. You were talking about demoing some stuff, so are you guys working on another album? Yes, and slowly but surely we've probably got four, five, or six good bases for songs.

00:17:16.980 --> 00:17:46.180
pretty firmly set in the direction they're headed, which is great. That's a big chunk of an album right there. Maybe something next year? Hopefully, yeah. Cool. So where was the album recorded? Well, Zach, you kind of were the hookup, I think. Yeah, well, yeah, Noel and I both, we were just talking to, like, there was a rep at our store who plays in a local, I guess, you could call him, like, a punk, a metal band, and we were kind of talking with him.

00:17:46.240 --> 00:18:15.380
He's much older than us. Just talking about where's a good place to record in Milwaukee that you'd recommend. He recommended Shane at Howell Street Studios. We did some research and looked at his studio and it looked great. Everything that he had recorded sounded awesome. He does a lot of the metal bands in Milwaukee. We just contacted him and hit it off with him and we decided this is the guy.

00:18:16.240 --> 00:18:46.200
It was awesome working with him. He's a great dude. As far as I know, we'll probably go back to him. It was a great experience. We're poor, so we didn't have a lot of time to, like Dustin mentioned, record clean vocals for a day or something. Sounds great. Hey, Zach, you just said something about a lot of the metal bands in Milwaukee. How many metal bands are there? Not a count, but are there a lot in the scene there in Milwaukee?

00:18:46.240 --> 00:18:49.120
and also in St. Paul, Minneapolis.

00:18:49.340 --> 00:18:52.600
Keith was not real like, eh, there's not many, but these guys are good.

00:18:53.100 --> 00:18:55.460
So, you know, maybe you've got a different.

00:18:55.740 --> 00:18:57.760
What's the scene like in both places?

00:18:58.420 --> 00:18:58.600
Sure.

00:18:58.840 --> 00:19:07.140
Well, I don't want to say we're a great Milwaukee metal band by any means, but, you know, there is a lot of bands.

00:19:07.280 --> 00:19:35.180
I guess it's more death metal bands than there are complex, progressive, out there genres of metal. Can you name a few of them that you admire or are friends with? I mean, a band called Northless. They're actually on Gilead Media out of Oshkosh. I don't know if you guys are familiar with them. Also the town. Jeans. I know Oshkosh.

00:19:37.320 --> 00:19:37.420
today.

00:19:41.700 --> 00:19:42.180
Northless.

00:19:43.100 --> 00:19:43.720
Who else is there?

00:19:43.980 --> 00:19:47.100
Aura, which actually has some members of Northless in there.

00:19:47.400 --> 00:19:49.140
Hot Coffin is another one.

00:19:49.560 --> 00:19:53.980
Their drummer, John, who was actually the guy who recommended Shane to us.

00:19:55.080 --> 00:19:55.820
Hot Coffin.

00:19:55.960 --> 00:19:56.780
That's a fucking great name.

00:19:56.980 --> 00:19:58.340
I was just thinking that.

00:19:58.340 --> 00:20:00.100
I might have to check them out just beyond the name alone.

00:20:00.820 --> 00:20:02.340
They are awesome.

00:20:02.500 --> 00:20:03.340
Hot Pockets.

00:20:05.620 --> 00:20:35.560
But yeah, I mean, there's a ton. A lot of smaller, newer metal bands, too, which is cool. You know, you play with different people every show, so that's always nice. And that speaks to the volume of bands, I think. Yeah. I realize there's a distance issue, but do you guys ever play live? Oh, yeah. As much as we can. We've played, I don't know, slightly more than a handful of shows so far. We're planning a couple more this winter. Up in my neck of the woods, we haven't played in the Twin Cities yet.

00:20:35.600 --> 00:21:03.260
So that'll be fun. But yeah, we can. It seems like the Twin Cities has kind of a black metal scene going on there right now. There's a few bands that I'm listening to, like Oak Pantheon, and I always say the name wrong. George always corrects me. Amensus or Amensus. I see Amensus. I could be wrong. It seems like there's a few up there. Is the scene obviously a lot bigger than Milwaukee? For black metal, definitely. Definitely. The cold tundra of Minneapolis.

00:21:05.600 --> 00:21:33.740
as to why that is to Garrison Keillor. Can you explain that? Nope. Not gonna follow the logic there. It's Garrison Keillor. That's all I'm saying. Okay. So you're saying we have homework, Jay, is what you're saying. Well, no, it's the Prairie Home Companion bullshit. So it's probably some horrible reaction to that. That's what it should be. Either that or I'd like to believe that he actually drives the underground black metal scene somehow. That would be really funny. Maybe I'll see him at a show sometime.

00:21:35.600 --> 00:22:04.920
I want to circle back to one that I missed asking, but when we were talking about recording the album, who did the artwork? Good question. A fellow named Nate Burns, who runs his art company. It's called Revolting Worship. We met Nate. Is he local? Not local at all. I believe he's still living in Columbus, Ohio. That's where we met him. That is a great name for a band, too. Revolving Worship. I like that. Oh, yeah. No, he was great. Totally.

00:22:05.600 --> 00:22:35.420
He was playing in a band, Arbor, that Zach and I were playing in at the time on a tour date in Columbus, Ohio, and just made the connection, liked a lot of his artwork, and said, hey, this guy has the aesthetic we're kind of going for, so let's see what he can do. It's a very nice cover, too, just to jump in on that. Did he do the logo, or did somebody else do the logo? He did the logo as well. That's pretty cool. I studied the album artwork a little bit today, and I got really, really excited,

00:22:35.620 --> 00:23:05.540
because at first glance, the big planet moon thing kind of looked like the Death Star because I saw like the one big eye in it. And then I noticed that. And then I noticed like, oh, it's got a couple more. So maybe they're just giant craters or something. But it still is very cool. Yeah, you know, I guess we don't really have anything too sci-fi themed. But, you know, we're all Star Wars fans. So it could have been the Death Star, I suppose. You know what? Let's just say it is. Yeah, sure. Let's just say it is. It's the black metal Death Star. That's what it's going to call.

00:23:07.000 --> 00:23:35.540
So we're getting ready to do our year of end episode here in a couple of weeks where we give our best of 2016 lists. And I was wondering if you guys have any albums from this year that you're particularly fond of. It doesn't have to be metal, by the way. Sure. I guess one I would have to say is the latest. I'm really not sure how to say the name either, but Cavalertalk album. Hey, good man. Cavalertalk, sure. That was my number one at our six-month list. So cool.

00:23:35.600 --> 00:24:05.280
Nice. I love that record. Yeah. How's it stacking up now after it's been almost five more months, Jay? Sure. It's going to be in the top five. Okay. It won't be top one. My top one is going to be a drop a bomb on the fucking podcast. But anyway, continue, please. Justin Bieber. The new Bruno Mars. I don't even know if there's a Justin Bieber this year. But Dustin and Zach, let's hear some more titles. We love hearing what people are listening to. Go ahead, Dustin. Okay, well, I am pretty sure this is a 2016 release.

00:24:05.600 --> 00:24:35.500
And if I'm not, I'm going to feel bad. But Children of the Night by Tribulation. I think it was early. It was last year. It was, but it made it on a lot of lists, a lot of our lists on the show. Yeah, definitely a good album. Well, I heard it this year for the first time. Sorry about that. What's enough? There you go. I mean, Abath was this year, right? Or was it not? Yeah, it was early. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I was a huge fan of that. And I'm preparing to listen to it now that snow has finally fallen from the back for the first time.

00:24:37.280 --> 00:25:05.360
I saw it was snowing in Michigan yesterday, so I guess that makes sense. Yeah, it's good. That's a good record. I liked it, too. Did you catch him on the tour? Yeah, yeah. He was, I mean, if you haven't seen his just personality on stage, it's worth paying for at least once. And yeah, he's just an amazing performer. He is. And he marries just enough of a touch of this self-deprecating comedy somehow that he's really brought into it these days. Yeah. It's so much fun to see. Totally, yepy. All right, Zach. Unless you've got more, you can get going. There's no rush.

00:25:06.020 --> 00:25:35.360
I'll take out. I guess, yeah. Zach is seriously going through his iTunes right now going, what are you doing? The Abath album, of course. I'm pretty sure it was Swallow the Sun this year. Last year. That was my number one last year. But you're still pulling out some good titles. Yeah, that was a good one. Who else? This is how buried we are in older music. It came out at the end of the year. Not everybody is

00:25:35.380 --> 00:26:05.360
as like on top of everything that's coming out as we are we're you know that's our obsession is okay we're doing out this week yeah we do it for the shows other people have like lives and better things to do so you know um i guess um one that well i think would be it will end up being in my top five for the end of the year would be the new all sest album i'm really digging that um yeah i don't know i can't think of any more off the top of my head we should have warned you but yeah those are but that's good choices you guys hit a lot of our lists list from last year

00:26:05.380 --> 00:26:35.360
and I'm sure a couple that are going to be on our list this year. So it sounds like you're kind of in the same boat we are. And I'm so glad you mentioned the, and I pronounce it, Confeller Talk. I don't know if I'm right, but because they became like my favorite fucking band this year. You know, I just discovered them for myself this year. I'd seen them live, but then I got that new record and I was like, holy shit, these guys rule. And went back to God, everything. Yeah, they did. All right. Well, before we get into the rest of the episode, why don't you tell our listeners where they can find your music and information about you and things like that? Sure. So the band is Utyaru and

00:26:35.400 --> 00:27:04.340
We're on Facebook, Bandcamp, Instagram. And we've recently changed our digital album to Name Your Price. So that means you can name it $0 and pick up all seven tracks on The Plight of Wanderers off Bandcamp. What do you got to lose? Pick it up. Check it out. It's pretty awesome. What do you got to lose? Yeah. For the people listening, can you tell us how to spell the name of the band? Because it does not spell the way it sounds. Good call.

00:27:04.360 --> 00:27:11.080
It's pronounced Uhtiaru, but it's spelled U-H-T-C-E-A-R-U.

00:27:11.260 --> 00:27:13.880
It doesn't look that bad, but it sounds really cool.

00:27:14.200 --> 00:27:24.140
Yeah, you gotta put yourself in the mindset of night sweats, eyes in the darkness possibly looking at you. You're freaked out.

00:27:24.260 --> 00:27:24.840
Hold on, hold on.

00:27:24.860 --> 00:27:29.400
It's kind of guttural, kind of spiritual at the same time.

00:27:29.900 --> 00:27:30.480
Uhtiaru.

00:27:32.419 --> 00:28:00.420
I do have one more last very important question. Same question I ask every band and everybody on the podcast knows what I'm about to ask you. I definitely saw Zach. Zach, what are you drinking? And Dustin, are you having a beer right now? Zach, what are you drinking? I am drinking, so this is from Stone. I don't know if you guys can see it. It's their 15th anniversary Black Imperial IPA. So this would be, they just came out with their 20th.

00:28:01.800 --> 00:28:31.740
I haven't been aging it for five years. But yeah, they actually just came out with a kind of variety pack thing with their 5, 10, 15, and 20 20th anniversary beers. So yeah, that's what I'm drinking. I like stone stuff. I did a ruination every once in a while. I was just out in California and I went to a Total Wine out there in Palm Springs and man, the amount of different stone stuff you can get out in California that you cannot get here, even though there's a stone factory just down

00:28:31.800 --> 00:29:01.460
down the street from in Richmond. Yeah, it was amazing. Great stuff. Definitely. I don't have a beer in front of me, but I should. That was just poor planning. But instead, I'll just give a shout out to one of my favorite local brews that is consistently just blowing my mind. Have any of you been to Hammerheart Brewery or heard of Hammerheart? Yes, we know. That's the different Monopticon. And our friend Neutrino has been there. He sent us some shirts and stuff. Well, it's fantastic.

00:29:01.780 --> 00:29:31.360
My personal recommendation is the Flaming Longship. Nice. Which is their Scotch Ale. And yeah, it's amazing. It's heavy but has flavor that doesn't, you know, assault you. Yeah, that's important with those Scotch Ale's. Yeah, those Scotch Ale's can do that too if you're done wrong. What do you get of Scotch Ale's? I'm drinking a Backwoods Bastard from Founders. I picked one of those up in California. I'll tell you, it's like an old uncle that shows up once a year to fuck with me and I enjoy the whole time.

00:29:34.200 --> 00:30:01.740
That is down at my local right now at the store, and I picked up one of their IPAs instead. I'm going to pick that up tonight. I was wondering if it was any good. Jay, they have Dirty Bastard. Get that as well. That's the non-bourbon version of the beer, of the Scotch Ale. They have the Scotch one. No, Dirty Bastard is Scotch. Backwoods is bourbon, barrel-aged Scotch. Fucking A. You'll be happy to know that Hammerheart is one of the breweries that's participating in

00:30:01.760 --> 00:30:31.600
The Despo Magazine Metal and Beer Fest in Philly in April. And a whole bunch of heavy metal themed brewers, including my own, Atlas, is going to be there. So hopefully the whole podcast will go if we can. I'm going to be there. I'm in. All right. So we're going to be drinking some Hammer Heart in April. Nice. And Apricon is playing, by the way. Will we have to go just because Adam's going to be there alone? Yes, that is true. Adam Pepedellan, the author of The Brutal Truth Guide to Extreme Beers. You're a personal lord and savior. Yes.

00:30:31.760 --> 00:30:32.220
Yes. Yes.

00:30:32.800 --> 00:30:34.360
He's got a picture of him on the wall there.

00:30:34.920 --> 00:30:35.080
Yeah.

00:30:35.460 --> 00:30:38.100
You know him well or do you know him or do you just like.

00:30:38.540 --> 00:30:41.520
I only know him through I've emailed him a bunch.

00:30:41.700 --> 00:30:46.640
He interviewed me for decibel, which is how he like found me on Twitter and emailed me, interviewed me for decibel.

00:30:46.920 --> 00:30:51.540
And then I just sort of got to know him through Facebook and email and text and phone calls.

00:30:51.760 --> 00:30:53.120
But I've never met him in person.

00:30:53.380 --> 00:30:53.600
Right now.

00:30:54.020 --> 00:31:00.440
So but to round it out, I'm drinking a Hallowed Be Thy Ale, which is a riff on Hallowed Be My Name.

00:31:00.960 --> 00:31:30.940
from Iron Maiden's album, Number of the Beasts. And it's a beer made by Corcoran Brewing and Three Notch Brewing. It's a collaboration beer. I don't know if you can see the label, but it's very Iron Maiden-esque. Nice. So I decided to pull out a metal beer. So I got two bottles of this. I'm going to have one now. I'm going to review one and make a Brewheads column out of it. Excellent. Nice. Speaking of Hammerheart, if I can just throw something in real quick. Yeah. I think, I'm pretty sure, um,

00:31:30.960 --> 00:32:00.940
are going to be sponsoring. We just booked a show in Minneapolis actually with the band False. I don't know if you guys are familiar with them. I think Hammerheart is actually sponsoring that event, which is awesome because usually they tap a special keg or something for that. Sorry to cut you off. That's all right. I was going to say my beer is not particularly metal, but it is tasty. It's a Deschutes Hopzeit Autumn IPA. I guess if no one has anything else, then we will

00:32:00.980 --> 00:32:30.940
We'll move on to the rest of the episode. Zach and Dustin will be joining us for the remainder of the episode, or at least for as long as they have time for. So they'll be sticking around. Before we get into the news, though, Buke, do you want to give us a report on your Trap Them show the other day? Yes. So, what is it, maybe two weeks ago now, on a Friday, took a trip up to see Trap Them. A friend of the podcast we met, Galen from Infera Brew, is also the base

00:32:30.980 --> 00:33:00.940
and trapped them. So I went up to check them out. Had dinner with Galen before the show. Caught up with him. Had a blast. They played the wind-up space in Baltimore, which I had never been there before. Had a bunch of local support that I didn't catch, but got to catch the opener. And I'm going to butcher this name, but it's the term for the predator from the movie. Whatever he is, the type of species that he is, that's what he

00:33:00.980 --> 00:33:30.720
That's what the band's name is. Okay. But they were awesome. And that band's name, I'm going to miss it. I'm going to mess up. It's Y-A-U-T-G-A. Awesome band. Great opener. Perfect fit for them. But why I wanted to mention Trap Them, I had always heard that their live performances were on a different level. Doesn't the singer have two broken feet right now? Yeah, he does. And if you have ever seen pictures,

00:33:30.960 --> 00:33:37.440
are live performances from trap them uh the lead singer ryan is just a madman on stage all over the

00:33:37.620 --> 00:33:42.600
place you know in the crowd hitting himself with the microphone hitting himself on the monitors

00:33:43.100 --> 00:33:49.560
so just going on stuff exactly going nuts and it's in your face and it's amazing well overseas ryan

00:33:49.960 --> 00:33:59.039
well when trap them was touring overseas ryan uh got injured i think it was he was jumping off of stage

00:33:59.060 --> 00:34:29.020
something with stage and basically broke his yeah he broke both feet jumping off of a speaker cabinet so is he like on crutches or has he got a couple of boots on like uh i saw them he is wearing like heavy duty construction worker knee pads and he's got cast his feet are casted up yeah and his feet are casted up and he and it does not slow him down one bit that's yeah buke i i saw the the instagram photos and

00:34:29.040 --> 00:34:57.180
that you were posting during the show. It was brutal. He's literally on his knees, huge casts and knee pads on. You were right, Bukki, just from the pictures. I wasn't there, but just from the pictures, man. It didn't sound like it bothered him at all. He started with a classic mic stand with the round, heavy bass that looks like a dumbbell, like a weight on the bottom of it. You screw into it. That lasted all of two songs before it's broken.

00:34:59.020 --> 00:35:29.000
the set knee pads are off knees are all scraped up cut up the floor is all bloody from him scraping his knees up from him cutting his face with the microphone it was a bloodbath literally and it was amazing wow it was absolutely amazing i want to recommend that record to people over and over and over i that's i think that made such a good loud well-produced insanely heavy record this year and and i and i'm highly jealous of not not having been able to attend that show or whenever hopefully it'll

00:35:29.040 --> 00:35:59.000
And that new album is Crown Feral by Trap Them. I cannot recommend it enough. The album comes, kicks your ass. It's loud. But man, that live show just blew me away with how they are live. They're one of those bands that they probably played what seemed like 20 songs just rolling them one into another, one into another. DC Metal Chris was there with me. So it was a pretty cool time. Did you get to talk to Galen? I did. Yeah, like I said, him and I had dinner before the show. Awesome. Galen plays

00:35:59.060 --> 00:36:27.840
I think you might have said that but if you didn't he plays bass for Tramp. I did. He doesn't play bass in Fairbrew, does he? What does he play? He plays guitar. Yeah that's awesome man I'm highly jealous that that would be way up on my must-see list this year or next. If that is if all the testimony you just heard is not enough for you to go pick up this album it didn't make we'll talk about a little bit later but Decimal Magazine I guess someone leaked their top 40 list already and it's number 11 on their top 40 for the whole year so.

00:36:29.040 --> 00:36:58.980
is actually out now. It just came out. Did you get it? Yeah, I got it already. But I'll just say again, well-deserved. It better be on a bunch of fucking issues. And talking to Galen, maybe with the success and reviews of the new album, sounds like maybe more tours maybe in order for them. Things are really starting to happen, so big things could be happening for Trap Them. I think they just finished up the Broken Foot tour last night or tonight. They did. They did.

00:36:59.020 --> 00:37:28.520
It's going to stop. But yes, all these other bands that I affectionately refer to, Trap Them, Ryan is the hockey player of heavy metal front men. He's the hockey grinder of front men. You know how hockey players will take a puck to the face, broken jaw, broken teeth, pull their teeth out and keep playing? Two broken feet and a broken ankle doesn't stop him when he's set. That's pretty metal. Yeah, so that's metal. So Trap Them comes around, goes see them, and again, Galen,

00:37:29.040 --> 00:37:54.420
Thanks for hanging out with me for a couple hours. And it was a great catching up with you, brother. Right on. All right. We're going to roll on into the news. First up, I hate to say it, but I think, Jay, we might have killed Leonard Cohen. Yeah, I'm sorry about that. I don't know how.

00:37:59.040 --> 00:38:05.620
really digging his uh his what is now his final album you want it darker uh and jay was like i think i

00:38:05.800 --> 00:38:11.900
heard that he was like talking about dying or something and and the day we posted this he died so uh

00:38:12.220 --> 00:38:17.260
sorry leonard oops yeah i heard um i heard justin bieber's not feeling so good by the way

00:38:19.720 --> 00:38:24.980
nice yeah so uh you know he's not metal or anything but leonard cohen was one hell of a singer

00:38:25.740 --> 00:38:54.860
You know what, George? I'm going to take a step back and say he is fucking metal, dude. He's metal in a non-metal way. In a non-metal way. He's badass. He's so grim and badass and just this dark poet. Looking for something a little different, check out Leonard Cohen. No longer with us. I already see him go. If I can interject just something on that. Certainly. Songwriters like that. Even though their genre isn't metal, but there is so much to be learned.

00:38:54.980 --> 00:39:24.280
by them for people who want to play metal or want to understand metal or want to get better at listening to metal. Yeah, it's totally not worth dismissing just because the genre doesn't align. I can have five songs of his easy that would be great metal covers. One of the first ones that comes to mind is The Partisan, if you know that song. Well, I only know that one. Yeah, it's an older one. But anyway, yeah, his stuff would structurally fit. And it's all dark, as George says, and he was an amazing poet. Honestly, I think he was one of the great American poets.

00:39:24.340 --> 00:39:53.580
All right, well, someone else that could still use our help is Mike Williams from I Hate God and Correction House. Apparently, Mike needs a liver. And, you know, we'd heard, obviously, recently that people were filling in for him. I know Phil Anselmo was filling in for him on some I Hate God shows. But we didn't know really what was going on. But apparently, Mike is in a very bad way. And he needs money because, you know, he's not working.

00:39:53.660 --> 00:40:23.480
And he's got a hell of a lot of medical bills, obviously. Someone that needs a liver would. And so they've set up a YouCaring page where you can go and donate. And when I looked at it yesterday, in fact, I'd made a donation in the name of the podcast. So I'm putting my money where my mouth is here. I'm going to ask you all to go check it out. And if you can donate anything, it would be much appreciated. They were really far along. They were looking to raise $50,000. They were in the 30s when I looked. And if you need the link, you can find it on our Facebook page.

00:40:23.680 --> 00:40:53.640
They posted it there. So go and help a metal brother out. Yeah, apparently he has cirrhosis of the liver. Yes. So can't say it's probably not self-inflicted, but still, if they got him on the list, he's obviously not still a raging alcoholic. Otherwise, they wouldn't put him on the list. It's hard to get on the list, dude. They ask like three basic questions, and they're like, next. If you dig down into the different articles that talk about what's going on with him, they say that he completely changed his lifestyle, cleaned up and everything, but it's still...

00:40:56.039 --> 00:40:56.820
He needs help.

00:40:56.840 --> 00:40:57.520
He can't bring a liver back.

00:40:58.010 --> 00:40:58.120
Right.

00:40:58.660 --> 00:40:59.620
We're sitting here to say.

00:40:59.990 --> 00:41:00.080
Yes.

00:41:00.720 --> 00:41:01.080
Amen.

00:41:01.920 --> 00:41:02.200
All right.

00:41:02.340 --> 00:41:03.160
Next news item we are.

00:41:03.220 --> 00:41:08.220
So somebody who doesn't need a new liver, I've just cracked open a Elysian Dark of the Moon.

00:41:08.680 --> 00:41:09.080
Oh, nice.

00:41:09.460 --> 00:41:10.000
I like Elysian.

00:41:10.070 --> 00:41:14.240
I keep trying pumpkin beers because Lord knows I hate them.

00:41:14.580 --> 00:41:16.140
I don't know why you do that to yourself.

00:41:16.720 --> 00:41:18.340
Because I offer punishment and pumpkin beer.

00:41:18.340 --> 00:41:23.000
Hey, Buke, have you tried the, what was I going to call it?

00:41:23.120 --> 00:41:51.960
Oh, the master of pumpkins from Troggs. Have you tried that one? I have, buddy. Like I say, my favorite time, you know, my favorite meme every time of year is, you know, the one that says, best way, you know, how do I enjoy a pumpkin beer? You know, step one, open it. Step two, throw it in the trash. And before this, I had a off-color brewing growl. That looks metal. Yeah. Is that a off-color? I think they're out of Chicago. Is that a dark beer? It is, buddy. It's a dark beer. It's a quadruple ale.

00:41:53.120 --> 00:42:22.820
Growl. Off-color Brewing, Astricago. Will, you know yourself, Woody. Hey, um, but not that you guys are laying too far back at all or anything, but Dustin and Zach, anytime you guys want to say anything about what we're talking about, you just knock us out of the way and shout it out. Yeah. Even if it's just like, man, you guys are such dicks. Why don't you, like, not have a podcast? Just whatever, you know? I'm out of here. Not at all. We're just, we're just uninformed compared to you guys about the current events, I think. Keep it that way, then. This is America, man. You do not have to be informed to have an opinion.

00:42:23.280 --> 00:42:24.440
Don't show us up.

00:42:25.820 --> 00:42:26.420
That's the truth.

00:42:26.510 --> 00:42:27.100
Unfortunately, too.

00:42:27.260 --> 00:42:28.380
I'm going to leave that there.

00:42:30.500 --> 00:42:36.260
So as we already alluded to, the Decibel Top 40 for 2016 has been released.

00:42:37.080 --> 00:42:44.780
I always like to check out the other lists when I'm making my lists to, you know, because sometimes they throw things on there that I just haven't heard this year.

00:42:44.790 --> 00:42:47.880
Because despite my best efforts to hear everything, I always miss stuff.

00:42:48.460 --> 00:43:18.400
Unfortunately for me, not to say that the decibel list isn't good, but there wasn't really anything on there that I hadn't heard. Other than a luck to dolo, whatever that is. I need to check that out. You see where Rossi Pazuzu was on there, John? Oh, I saw it, Jay. I saw it. I saw it. Vindication. And number four, even. I'm going to tell you something, Jay. I assume you and I will probably have them in a very good spot on our list, which is going to make me happy because our friend TR was trashing their name. We were at a show recently.

00:43:18.460 --> 00:43:48.300
I don't know where we were. He sounded like a clown. Yeah. He's going to be the clown when it's not on his list. So TR, I hope you're listening right now. Yeah, he will. That's all right. Cause it'll be on mine and that's all that matters to me. So yeah, it'll be on mine too. It'll be on my job way up there. Now I like a lot of things that aren't metal, but it always bugs me when there's non metal stuff on a list. Um, you know, I mean, we try to, while we respect things that aren't metal, I love all kinds of things that aren't metal. It's a metal podcast with a metal list. It should be metal bands.

00:43:48.440 --> 00:44:18.420
I know Galen and Neutrina are going to hate me for this, but Virus does not belong on this list. That is not metal. I'm not saying it's not good, but it's not metal. What is it? It's weird stuff. I haven't listened to it enough to categorize it, but it's not metal. It's not heavy. How surprising do the rest of you find it? And I'm not saying it's not a good record, but their number one record is the chemist record. Yeah, it was shocking. I actually knew that months ago because I know the editor of Decibel, and he kind of dropped that in that shh, shh, shh, in an

00:44:19.640 --> 00:44:24.360
He told you this months ago? Yeah. So they haven't really been listening to anything

00:44:24.420 --> 00:44:48.420
for months. Is that a number one record to you, Will? What do you think? No, it's not. I mean, Chemist is sort of like, I like it, but it's, and this guy, there's going to be no surprise to anyone. I like it more when the vocals are the death metal vocals with the music. I think it's fantastic. The clean singing is not the best, in my opinion, or it doesn't kind of match the music. It's kind of like, yeah, I'm a little surprised

00:44:48.440 --> 00:44:52.920
by the chemist number one but I knew it was going to be number one so but chemist is playing at the

00:44:53.370 --> 00:44:59.900
uh Dust Bowl magazine uh metal and beer show up in Philly so so this might not even be a real list this

00:45:00.140 --> 00:45:05.340
might be something put together by the record labels uh to be like hey you know they're going to be on our show

00:45:05.680 --> 00:45:10.040
we need these guys in number one so here's a little payola put them at the top of the list we know it's only

00:45:10.360 --> 00:45:18.400
August but uh you know I'm wondering here wondering no it's not it's not I'm just kidding yeah I bet you

00:45:18.420 --> 00:45:47.980
that Erie was on there. Yeah, I was happy they were on there. I was a little disappointed that they're at 35, but just happy that someone else besides me knows who they are. And definitely happy about Blood Incantation, which I think we all are, at number three. It's not a bad list. It touches a lot of the titles we've talked about. Graves at Sea is on there. George the Subrosa is on there. Destroyer 666. Four Guts with one song? Come on. It's half an hour song, but really? Well, I think it's 40 minutes. Whatever.

00:45:49.980 --> 00:46:18.380
It's still technically classified as a single. Hammers with Misfortune is on there. Trap Them is mentioned is there. Cobalt's there. Well, that's the case, George, and you wouldn't put Insomnium on your list then, I guess. Well, I mean, technically, no. Well, I mean, technically, yes, because it's a concept album. It's not built as a single. I'm sensing a lot of bullshit here, George. Yeah, yeah. I've got plenty of that to spread around. Buke and George, you'll be glad to know InterArma is on there. Hey, I'm coming

00:46:18.740 --> 00:46:28.220
I mean, I still think the vocals could use a little less suck on it, but on the whole, it is kind of a cool album.

00:46:28.400 --> 00:46:31.460
I love it. I love it. I'm out of the closet on that one.

00:46:31.740 --> 00:46:35.340
I will say this about the list. It's definitely a wide variety of metal.

00:46:35.760 --> 00:46:36.520
It is. It is.

00:46:36.860 --> 00:46:37.940
I mean, Diamond Heads on it.

00:46:38.060 --> 00:46:38.940
Yeah, I was just looking at that.

00:46:39.760 --> 00:46:46.280
I would say, so I will just say one other thing about it, which is I think a really notable missing one is the Eson Records not there.

00:46:46.380 --> 00:47:16.180
Oh, wow. There's actually quite a few that I thought were missing on there, but that's what a list is. It's going to have stuff you don't think, and it's going to have stuff you wish were on there. Well, we'll school them when our lists come out. Hell yeah. John puts together our collective top 25. We'll show everyone up. Which is the only list. Yes. The only real list. Yep. So Anthrax is going to be going out on tour next year and playing all of Among the Living, which this is apparently the trend now to go and play your classic albums in their entirety, which as far as trends go, I guess,

00:47:16.440 --> 00:47:19.960
It could be worse. It's kind of a neat thing to do for fans.

00:47:20.839 --> 00:47:21.940
They just did that, though.

00:47:22.160 --> 00:47:27.860
Yeah, exactly, Jay. They did that in the U.S., so they're doing it in the U.K. this time, but they did that in the past couple years ago.

00:47:27.860 --> 00:47:28.360
Oh, did they?

00:47:28.580 --> 00:47:29.980
Yeah, and I attended it.

00:47:30.240 --> 00:47:30.800
It was great.

00:47:31.360 --> 00:47:40.080
I will tell you this, though, too. One of the things I remembered, and it's not that I haven't heard that album in years, because I put it on occasionally, and they actually played it in order, but then they interspersed it with a lot of different stuff.

00:47:41.640 --> 00:47:45.520
For All Kings wasn't out yet, so there was nothing from that. Some of you will apparently be relieved to hear.

00:47:46.579 --> 00:47:47.200
But it was

00:47:49.460 --> 00:47:52.420
The closer it gets to the end of the record, the more I was sort of like, you know what?

00:47:52.520 --> 00:47:55.300
This was a great record, but it did kind of die off a little bit at the end

00:47:55.400 --> 00:47:57.380
It's not as consistently good all the way through as I thought

00:47:57.720 --> 00:47:58.500
Bloody evil wings

00:47:59.119 --> 00:48:01.040
George, me, that was going to be on my list, buddy

00:48:01.400 --> 00:48:02.680
I still think that's a good record

00:48:03.319 --> 00:48:04.920
But anyway, yeah, they did just do that

00:48:05.240 --> 00:48:06.560
And I saw it was a good show

00:48:06.720 --> 00:48:07.080
Right on

00:48:07.240 --> 00:48:11.440
And I saw that Joey Belladonna sang the national anthem at a Bulls-Wizards game

00:48:11.740 --> 00:48:12.560
Did you actually listen to it?

00:48:12.560 --> 00:48:13.280
I listened to it, yeah

00:48:13.440 --> 00:48:15.580
I mean, it wasn't like all metal or anything

00:48:15.600 --> 00:48:45.540
But you know, he did not embarrass us. Was it in Chicago or was it in D.C.? I think it was in Chicago. He's such a good say. He's singing now better than he ever has. Yeah. In fact, one of the guys in the band, I don't remember which one, but he was just saying the same thing, that he's singing better than he has in years. So good. So Black Sabbath played their last ever U.S. concert in San Antonio on November 12th, which is a sad thing to hear. However, I just learned this morning that Tony has not ruled out doing one-off festivals.

00:48:45.700 --> 00:49:15.560
Festival appearances. So I guess it's not really the end now, is it? Yeah, I'm actually really glad you put that little second piece on the updated script because I was going to mention that because I saw that. They haven't ruled out the festivals. Yeah. Well, they're in Chile now. I mean, the tour itself, as you wrote correctly here, is not over. They've still got some stuff around the world to do before they're done. Yeah, the last U.S. show. The last U.S. show, No More Sabbath in America. Yeah, and they're not the only ones because Twisted Sister has also

00:49:15.560 --> 00:49:45.520
to their last ever concert, also on November 12th, in Monterey, Mexico. And that saddens me a little just because, you know, going back to the old days, Twisted Sister has been one of my favorite bands for many years. Of course, I've been able to see them a few times, so that lessens the blow a little bit. I never saw them once, George. I never saw them once. So George, what did you think about Dee Snider saying he was cool with them, contending without him? I know it wouldn't be the same thing, seeing it live, but I thought it was interesting. He's just like, yeah, go with it, man. I don't care. If you want to keep running with this, it's go for it.

00:49:45.560 --> 00:50:14.580
Is there a rumor that they're going to? No, no. I think somebody asked him in an interview and he said he was fine with it. It wouldn't be anything without him. So is it D just hanging it up? Yeah, you're right, Jay. Well, he just released a solo album. Which, by the way, stay away from it. I haven't heard enough of it yet to make that. I mean, at the very least, there's that acoustic piano or whatever version of We're Not Gonna Take It, which is quite awesome. Is that on the record? That is on the record, yes.

00:50:15.580 --> 00:50:19.160
that much. For some cancer charity,

00:50:19.560 --> 00:50:21.160
Deesnay did a piano version of

00:50:21.380 --> 00:50:23.280
We're Not Gonna Take It. It is fucking effective.

00:50:23.560 --> 00:50:26.240
It is effective. There were waterworks involved.

00:50:26.940 --> 00:50:28.180
Yeah, especially if you watch the video.

00:50:28.900 --> 00:50:29.960
All right, moving on.

00:50:30.160 --> 00:50:32.180
Clutch is apparently going to start working on new material

00:50:32.260 --> 00:50:34.200
in 2017, so there you go.

00:50:34.700 --> 00:50:36.420
There you go, Will. You're number one for

00:50:36.600 --> 00:50:38.400
2017. George,

00:50:38.560 --> 00:50:40.200
I'm surprised you put this on the script

00:50:40.340 --> 00:50:42.400
because they're not metal.

00:50:45.580 --> 00:51:14.600
I'm sure if you ask Neil he'd be like we're not a metal band. But they are. You only have to pick 24 more albums in 2017 Will. Yeah we got the first one set out for you. Hey you know what no that's not true because you know sometimes they're not that great but the last two were unbelievable. I agree the last two were really good. At least you're being honest Will. Not all of them are home runs. They are hard workers man. Hardest working band in show business right now I think. And what I love is they play the 930 club here in DC like every Christmas.

00:51:15.000 --> 00:51:44.860
Yeah, one of the two metal bands that play there now. They're from here. Oh, yeah. I had no idea where they were from. Oh, that's cool that they're from. They're from like Germantown, Maryland. Right on. You go to those Christmas shows? I've been to one when they actually recorded the Live at the 930 album. So, but it's problematic because, you know, it's Christmas time. So you're typically traveling and stuff. But if I'm home on the 27th of December in D.C., I will be there. I'll pick up that live album and see if I can hear you screaming. You know, I,

00:51:45.000 --> 00:52:14.980
If I knew they're recording live, I would have yelled out way more stuff. I'll get on a clutch record if it fucking kills me. All right. So Halloween is doing a reunion with Kai Hanson and Michael, I want to say Kisk. I've never actually said his name out loud. Called Pumpkin United in 2017, 2018. I have no idea if they're actually going to come to this country. I haven't really cared about Halloween since Keeper of the Seven

00:52:42.560 --> 00:52:44.980
I'd try and check them out just for

00:52:46.039 --> 00:53:14.960
That was pretty much the origin of what I consider the power metal sound. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. So Jay pointed out something that Vaken has been doing a little bit of excavation. Exclamation? Got it. Anyway. Preparing for next year's show. Apparently because they had a lot of water issues this past year. A lot of mud. And so they're trying to make

00:53:15.000 --> 00:53:44.960
get a little less swampy there which is good since jay and i are going to be there next year uh that will be appreciated if we're not wallowing around in the mud how many pipes how many marijuana pipes and old fucking beer glasses do you think that excavation brought up you know what i mean it's like fuck i had a friend who once told me if you ever go to amsterdam and if you go there to do drugs don't buy any just go to the first fucking trash can you see at the airport it's probably very true because without doubt everybody buys too much and they're like shit we gotta lose this shit

00:53:44.980 --> 00:54:14.960
I gotta tell you this next one I didn't even know that this company still existed I didn't either so uh in the first of what's found to be a lot of Metallica talk this night uh Metallica is apparently now available again on Napster which is ironic of course because they were the ones that shouted so loudly about how uh much they disapproved of Napster when Napster started out now Napster is apparently a a legal uh streaming uh company now but I thought they went out of business a couple years ago so so did I yeah uh it's interesting

00:54:15.000 --> 00:54:44.960
I don't know maybe this is them making a comeback I don't know but wouldn't that be ironic if Metallica saved their bacon yeah because I you know that record is on track did you get did you see the sales figures I saw it was like 240 to 260 to 240,000 260,000 the first week the new Metallica record this is a double album

00:54:47.940 --> 00:54:49.800
It's to be expected when you have Taylor Swift

00:54:49.940 --> 00:54:52.220
and Justin Bieber doing backing vocals on the album

00:54:52.480 --> 00:54:53.080
and guest vocals

00:54:54.900 --> 00:54:57.720
I literally don't know enough now to know that that's not true

00:54:57.980 --> 00:54:58.660
It's not true

00:54:59.900 --> 00:55:01.200
You could have convinced me Will

00:55:02.960 --> 00:55:04.400
If someone told me that I'd be like

00:55:04.520 --> 00:55:05.960
I totally believe it

00:55:08.020 --> 00:55:09.700
They're so accessible

00:55:10.140 --> 00:55:11.600
now my two year old bought the album

00:55:12.400 --> 00:55:13.760
A little breeze back there

00:55:13.940 --> 00:55:14.960
banging her head right now

00:55:15.500 --> 00:55:44.940
She's not banging her head. She's shaking her head. That's how they put her to sleep at night. They're like, put on a Metallica record, she'll crash right away. Sorry, George. This week's new releases, here they are. Spend your hard-earned money now. Well, let's move on to new releases. And by new releases, I mean the new Metallica record. Hardwired to Self-Destruct dropped two days ago. And I was surprised to find that

00:55:44.980 --> 00:56:14.900
they actually released a video for every song on the album. So if you are not inclined to buy it or have a streaming service, you can go on to YouTube and listen to every song and apparently look at them while they're singing it. And I know, you know, unless Zach or Dustin are going to come to my rescue, I'm going to be the only one here saying that I like it. Come on, guys. I will say this. I went out of town hunting this weekend, guys. And when I called George coming back today, I said, yeah, George,

00:56:14.980 --> 00:56:44.940
First Listen, I don't like it. I was skeptical on the first listen as well. I'm sorry to interrupt you. The first listen through, I was expecting a completely different album based on the singles that we heard. It was very thrashy, and the rest of the album is just not. I understand where you're coming from. Carry on, please. What we talked on the phone is that you and I both, I know we're alone here, you and I like Death Magnetic a lot. Death Magnetic, I thought, was a good return. Of course, they will never get back to the

00:56:45.020 --> 00:57:14.940
of old. But from the recent albums, it was a good return to somewhat form. And they did sort of touch on Master of Puppets a bit because the song... But the thing about this album, though, George, it's almost Death Magnetic, but then it misses some. Like, the first five or six songs, the song... Not the songwriting, but like the solos and the music I like. But it's still the same problem I have with new Metallica is the lyrics. I can't stand the lyrics. They're just...

00:57:14.960 --> 00:57:44.120
They're so literal. It's like, like I told you on the phone, for lack of a better phrase, it's like a country artist writing a heavy metal song. Oh my God, Buke, you just nailed it. Holy shit. There's no metaphors anymore. You did. Literal is what it is. They are just, they are so literal and so easy that your eighth graders, your, your, you know, guys, people who don't listen to metal can put the song and be like, yeah, man, I love it.

00:57:45.120 --> 00:58:11.520
It's definitely a different style for them. And Buke didn't agree with me when I said it was sort of a groove doom in that it's got like this. They get into this like, I don't know, they get into a groove, okay? And I only say doom because it's slow and heavy. Yeah, the groove is that it's slow and the doom is that they sing about country crap. They don't sing about country crap. I was going to say the song Dream No More is like a sequel to The Thing That Should Not Be. It's all about Cthulhu.

00:58:13.240 --> 00:58:14.820
Let me say this guys again

00:58:15.020 --> 00:58:17.480
I love we're talking over each other because this is awesome

00:58:17.600 --> 00:58:18.440
I knew this was going to happen

00:58:19.420 --> 00:58:21.740
This is me going into this album

00:58:21.960 --> 00:58:25.240
Like I mentioned on the pod, I went into this like a Star Wars movie

00:58:25.600 --> 00:58:26.720
No prior listens

00:58:27.080 --> 00:58:28.240
I avoided every single

00:58:28.640 --> 00:58:32.440
I avoided everything from this because I really like Death Magnetic that much

00:58:32.600 --> 00:58:34.460
And George, I'll speak for you here

00:58:34.540 --> 00:58:35.960
Please correct me if I'm wrong

00:58:36.160 --> 00:58:38.020
Death Magnetic hooked us on first listen

00:58:38.620 --> 00:58:40.060
I think it took two

00:58:41.859 --> 00:59:10.020
It probably didn't take as long as this one did. I've been through it four or five times now, and each time I listen, I like it better because I'm hearing more things. But that's the problem is that there's the group of people, and it's a very large group of people, in fact, it's half the podcast here at least, who don't really like anything past Master of Puppets. If that's what you like, that's what you like. I'm not going to try and convince you or whatever. And Dustin and Zach, if that's you guys, get the fuck off.

00:59:10.080 --> 00:59:39.640
the pod. Before I go any further, I've got to get these guys' opinions on Metallica in general. I don't know if you've heard the album or not, but come on. What do you got? Yeah, so I gave it a listen-through just a couple days ago, and honestly, I don't think it's... I don't know what I was expecting, and it was no better or no worse than I was expecting. However, I think one of you just hit the nail on the head with the lyrics, and for me... That was buke. That was buke. Give me credit here. Perfect buke. That was buke.

00:59:40.080 --> 01:00:10.020
I'm giving you a lot of credit for everything you said tonight for you. And for me, because I know writing lyrics, it's just so hard. And sometimes you got the inspiration for a song, sometimes you don't. But I think what ruined it for me on this album in particular is that James Hetfield's voice has lost enough of an edge where it really just feels like words and not a metal performance. That started years ago. Testify, brother. That's the whole first thing that started getting me off.

01:00:10.080 --> 01:00:40.040
these guys wagging. You got off on these guys? Zach, what's your opinion? Yeah. Them in general, and if you haven't heard the record, that's fine. Yeah, I listened to, I think I heard all the record. I watched all the videos or had them playing in the background, whatever. By the way, both of you cared enough to do that. You both listened to it to see what was that. So you must have been at least kind of fans. Oh yeah, definitely. Yeah, I can only say there was, you know, maybe two or

01:00:40.060 --> 01:01:10.040
three songs that I liked enough to listen to again. But yeah, like Dustin said, his voice and like Duke, I believe, said, the lyrics just turned me off. I don't know. It's a different thing now. Kind of disappointed, yeah. And more power to people who love it. It's not metal. It's not like it's St. Anger piece of shit or Lulu piece of shit. It's just different. And if you can't get behind a change, then

01:01:10.080 --> 01:01:40.000
you can't. I will say, since you mentioned St. Anger, I was thinking about this earlier today. Does Metallica ever play a song off St. Anger live? Occasionally. They play, what's that? Dirty Window. Frantic. Frantic, I think, yeah. Yeah, and then there's a song called Dirty Window they play sometimes, but it's rare. It's pretty rare. Right, so I think what's going to happen is two years from now, or not two years, but will they play any single song off this record? They'll play the three singles. They'll play Hardwire, Moth to 4,

01:01:40.820 --> 01:02:10.020
and Atlas Rise. I like all of those songs. Those are great, I think. And when all is said and done, Will, and you don't always have to try to write your legacy, I realize, but when all is said and done, when we're making our all-time favorite list because they all died in an airplane crash, how many of these songs are going to be pulled into that list? 0.0. Most likely. Right, and I'm not trying to convince anyone that this is the next greatest thing. In fact, based on the first three songs, I was like, this could make my list, but I'll go on record.

01:02:10.060 --> 01:02:11.960
Now I'm saying this is not going to be on my list.

01:02:12.280 --> 01:02:13.260
But I still like it.

01:02:13.500 --> 01:02:14.520
It just hit me.

01:02:14.820 --> 01:02:17.680
You know, right away when I talked about the lyrics being so bad,

01:02:17.780 --> 01:02:20.060
my daughter just came to the room as I'm trying to do this.

01:02:20.260 --> 01:02:24.280
But the Metallica of old, for their first song that they're putting out,

01:02:24.500 --> 01:02:25.900
they would not use the lyrics.

01:02:26.040 --> 01:02:27.160
We're so fucked.

01:02:27.400 --> 01:02:28.400
Shit out of luck.

01:02:28.640 --> 01:02:29.640
I thought that was pretty ballsy.

01:02:30.480 --> 01:02:31.580
That's not Metallica.

01:02:31.880 --> 01:02:33.480
That's too high school-y.

01:02:34.020 --> 01:02:36.700
Well, it goes along with the punky thing they used to do.

01:02:36.700 --> 01:02:39.260
It might have gone on Garage Days Revisited if it was somebody else's song.

01:02:39.650 --> 01:02:39.740
Yeah.

01:02:39.840 --> 01:02:40.520
Exactly.

01:02:41.180 --> 01:02:42.980
And I want to take what you said just there.

01:02:43.440 --> 01:02:48.600
Because that's, I'm going to go with Garage Inc. because it's got some different stuff on there as well.

01:02:48.880 --> 01:02:50.840
But all the, you know, there's 12 songs.

01:02:51.100 --> 01:02:53.020
Four of them are fast and thrashy.

01:02:53.140 --> 01:02:55.840
Eight of them are slower and more plodding.

01:02:56.080 --> 01:03:02.220
And those eight songs sound to me like they were written in the style of the cover songs that they do on Garage Inc.

01:03:02.380 --> 01:03:04.780
There's a little bit of Blue Oyster Cult in there.

01:03:05.060 --> 01:03:06.900
There's a little bit of Merciful Fate.

01:03:07.200 --> 01:03:08.360
There's a little bit of Deep Purple.

01:03:08.720 --> 01:03:37.860
And it's like these songs are just sort of them like writing songs in the style of the bands that they like. And I'm like, you know, because I always really liked Metallica cover songs because they were cool, but they didn't really sound quite like Metallica. Well, Buke, do you, are you aware, Buke, that there's a Ronnie James Dio tribute on the digital variety of this? One of the songs of which is Stargazer. Oh, are you serious? Yeah, you need to go look it up. It's on iTunes. Okay, I love this new album. This album is the album of the year. Yeah, they do the Ronnie Rising medley.

01:03:37.980 --> 01:03:38.980
Oh, I love that.

01:03:39.060 --> 01:03:41.620
They also do a cover of, sorry.

01:03:41.780 --> 01:03:42.240
Carol Woman.

01:03:43.220 --> 01:03:49.580
No, I was going to say they do a Deep Purple, When a Blind Man Cries, and they do Iron Maiden's Remember Tomorrow.

01:03:49.760 --> 01:03:50.820
Which is, by the way, a great song.

01:03:50.880 --> 01:03:51.400
I love that song.

01:03:51.600 --> 01:03:55.160
Which, by the way, John Opeth is a killer version of Remember Tomorrow.

01:03:55.340 --> 01:03:55.940
Yes, they do.

01:03:56.040 --> 01:03:56.320
I've never heard it.

01:03:56.460 --> 01:03:57.240
Where is that available?

01:03:57.480 --> 01:03:59.260
It was on a compilation in 1998.

01:03:59.640 --> 01:04:01.080
It was on a tribute to the beast.

01:04:01.260 --> 01:04:04.500
It's also on My Arms Your Hearse, the latest version of that, too.

01:04:04.700 --> 01:04:05.040
It's on there.

01:04:05.420 --> 01:04:35.380
Can there ever be an episode about Opeth talk? I don't think so. At the very least, there's always the Opeth fan. Yeah, exactly. Will, I want to ask you this. I don't know if you joined us the episode where we mentioned, I think we may have talked about this when Metallica announced this new album in the works. Is it even after the Black Album and Load, Reload, and everything we got since then, is it even right of us to expect those old albums again? Because I can't put it into, I can't describe

01:04:35.900 --> 01:05:02.780
Why Metallica, as my daughter came back in, she's so outraged. Is it right of us to even expect that? And how does a band, because, you know, I think with Opeth, I'm using them as an example, they explained to us why they had this drastic change. I was going to mention that to you. I was like, this is just like Opeth. You know, they're not hardly metal at all, and yet you still stick behind them. And that's basically what I'm doing here.

01:05:03.400 --> 01:05:32.360
The thing is, because Opeth gave us a reason. Has James and the guys ever came out and said, this is why we're not doing that old sound anymore? And all right, so both of you guys have extremely good points. And I actually thought about this a lot today. If Will was to change his Twitter, he would be the Metallica fan. He would. I don't know if I'd go that far, but I thought about this a lot today. I think for me, because I feel like every podcast we talk,

01:05:33.400 --> 01:06:02.260
Metallica's mentioned and then I rant. I just rant for a half an hour and get it off my chest. That's why we named the segments Will's Rant. Here's what it is for me. I've told this story a million times, but it's very personal to me. For me, Metallica was heavy metal to me. When I heard Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning and Master Puppets and when I saw, the first time I saw them live,

01:06:02.400 --> 01:06:05.560
I was on the Justice For All tour, and they were gods to me.

01:06:05.780 --> 01:06:06.860
Pardon us while we're old.

01:06:07.100 --> 01:06:07.180
Yes.

01:06:07.540 --> 01:06:10.460
They were one of the reasons why I got into heavy metal.

01:06:10.860 --> 01:06:14.720
And they were one of my gateway drugs.

01:06:14.980 --> 01:06:19.620
Absolutely 100% one of my gateway drugs to the metal, so to speak.

01:06:20.220 --> 01:06:25.960
And what to me is I was so annoyed when I went to boot camp for the Marine Corps in 1991

01:06:26.080 --> 01:06:28.520
that I was missing the release of the new Metallica album.

01:06:28.600 --> 01:06:58.580
And when the first thing I did after I graduated, I was probably still in my uniform as I was in Paris Island. And I went to the the Marine Corps exchange and bought this album and listened to it on the way home with my parents. And I could not. It was like a complete betrayal to me instantly. It was like someone just like smashed me in the face with a hammer. How horrible the Black Album was. And where was drill sergeant saying to punish him that hard? Yeah. I mean, like, clearly I would have gone back to boot camp for another time.

01:06:58.600 --> 01:07:03.660
for three years to have them change the album so for me it's personal and i i know

01:07:03.900 --> 01:07:07.020
everyone it's going to be a little bit different okay but so so to get back to your

01:07:07.200 --> 01:07:13.620
question so part of me is like yes all bands change iron maiden has changed you know like a lot of the

01:07:13.630 --> 01:07:19.380
big four has changed but when i think about how much like you can look at overkill or testament or

01:07:19.700 --> 01:07:24.880
exodus or slayer who have not changed that much right and even even megadeth they've changed a couple

01:07:25.150 --> 01:07:28.580
albums but then they come back to the roots on a couple albums but like metallica is

01:07:29.360 --> 01:07:30.040
Sucked.

01:07:30.100 --> 01:07:30.440
Suck

01:07:58.580 --> 01:08:28.560
write an album by like you know like the first four and part of me is like you know what it's us it's us the old fans that made you what you are today that gave you the shot so part of me is like you owe us i know that i know they don't owe us anything this is me talking personally very passionately personally give us something give us like we made you if we didn't buy your albums and spend our allowances that's how old long ago it was our allowances to buy your your cds and your tapes practically eight tracks if you're as old as as

01:08:28.580 --> 01:08:29.420
as John.

01:08:30.690 --> 01:08:30.940
And like,

01:08:31.180 --> 01:08:31.299
just,

01:08:31.400 --> 01:08:31.560
Hey,

01:08:31.839 --> 01:08:32.180
give us,

01:08:32.339 --> 01:08:33.240
give us something.

01:08:33.440 --> 01:08:33.600
No,

01:08:33.720 --> 01:08:33.779
no,

01:08:33.930 --> 01:08:34.020
John.

01:08:34.220 --> 01:08:34.279
No,

01:08:34.460 --> 01:08:35.140
take that back.

01:08:35.259 --> 01:08:36.700
John was buying phonographs.

01:08:40.000 --> 01:08:40.359
Yeah,

01:08:40.490 --> 01:08:40.980
it was.

01:08:41.359 --> 01:08:43.120
It sounded damn good back then too.

01:08:44.460 --> 01:08:45.040
But part of me,

01:08:45.210 --> 01:08:47.240
it does want to say that like you owe us,

01:08:47.460 --> 01:08:50.839
like we stuck it out and we spent our allowances and you owe us.

01:08:51.000 --> 01:08:51.859
And part of me is like,

01:08:52.020 --> 01:08:53.299
it sounds to me like you didn't stick it out.

01:08:53.400 --> 01:08:55.180
You abandoned them back in 91.

01:08:55.660 --> 01:08:55.740
Yeah.

01:08:55.859 --> 01:09:24.859
Yeah, but you know what? I have to back Will up on this a little bit too because if you remember, and you probably remember. No, hold on. Wait, hold on, Jay. I did not abandon them because I did buy the Black Album. I did buy Death Magnetic, and I did preorder this one. And whatever hell's happened those 20 years with Road and Reload and Load on Your Chest or whatever it was, yeah, I didn't buy those because they were horrible. But the flame burns eternal that it may one day not suck again. Oh, no, that'll never happen.

01:09:26.819 --> 01:09:55.840
I don't think your opinions are going to change. Guys, the thing is this. Do you think they saw the success? Because how does it overnight, they write the Black Album, they see the massive success of the Black Album, that instantly that's their sound that then dominates the last 30 years. I think it was really just a point of them evolving. I don't think it was to make money or anything like that. They just... No. It almost seems like in one night they're done. But you know what? I think George is right. You know what? I don't think

01:09:58.540 --> 01:10:25.840
I saw I didn't read it but I was flipping through one of the it was either metal hammer or terrorizer and there was an article I think it was metal hammer maybe I don't know anyway there was an article about Metallica and whether or not Cliff would have allowed them to cut their hair and all this and there was a picture of Cliff's face superimposed over Jason Newstead's with short hair and everything and it just looked disturbing Newstead was the last ounce of metal left in that

01:10:25.900 --> 01:10:55.800
I agree. But the thing about Cliff, like in that book, George, the book, the Back to the Front book, that's one of the things that's over and over has said is that like if they were voting on something, like something the band was going to do or some image-based thing or something like that, and if the three of them voted one way and Cliff voted the other, they were like, well, we're not doing it then. They all looked up to Cliff, and he had better musical ideas and so on and so forth. And Jay, I will say one thing. Sorry to cut you off, but I did, after your recommendation, I did go by that Back to the Front book, and that's one of the things I thought about. Like, what would Metallica be like if Cliff was still alive?

01:10:55.860 --> 01:11:25.840
And we don't know, but that's my question. We can go dig them up and prop the skeleton up on stage. And the music will be better. Ouija board and a microphone, see what we can do. Okay, now, we've talked about the various ages on the podcast, you gentlemen being older and better looking than I am. Dustin and Zach, you guys don't have to give you a specific age if you don't want to, but I'm 33. A lot of people my age who listen to Metallica, I think they are the Black Album on, and they love them. I'm seeing posts

01:11:25.880 --> 01:11:55.580
on Facebook. I made a post on Facebook. I'm like, here it is. New Metallica album release day when all my metal heads come out of the woodwork and love the album. I don't think the majority is even upset that this album. I think they love it. Yeah, it's probably just the hardcore bass. Well, the people who are really concerned with it being a metal album. Yeah. There's plenty of people who just want to listen to a good hard rock album or hard rock and don't care if it's that good. They want something catchy and, you know,

01:11:55.640 --> 01:12:25.420
to shake their fist about. So Metallica definitely fills a void. And I definitely am younger than you guys. And you'll be maybe disappointed by some of the songs I put on my top five Metallica song list after this conversation. Hey, you know what? I will list some newer songs and I will stab anybody in the throat to defend the newer songs that I will put on there. So I'm with you. As long as it's not on St. Anger, I don't care. Yeah. But the thing is, though, like when I mentioned, you know,

01:12:25.460 --> 01:12:55.420
So, Will, you didn't answer this. Opeth gave us a reason why their sound changed. Actually, yeah. So, Buke, to go back to that, so this is the other thing I thought about today. If they just basically said, like, hey, for some reason, like, James's voice is shot, or you know what, hey, Kirk has arthritis in his fingers and just can't do a solo, or Lars decided that with all his wine and art collection that he decided he wanted to do country music, but they're forcing him to still play metal. Like, exactly. Give us a reason why you decided

01:12:55.460 --> 01:13:25.220
to change so drastically away from what you used to be. That's an extremely good point, Buke. Because the outcry has to be huge. And John, go ahead. Two words. Bob Rock. That's what I said. Bob Rock. But he hasn't been around for a while. Yeah, but it doesn't matter. Bob Rock created the monster in itself. In a sense, yeah, Bob Rock planted that seed. So since so many years of him influencing them, I think they kind of can't change their thought process. And George, I have no issue with you.

01:13:25.460 --> 01:13:55.420
them because you can I take a boatload of shit for opeth not being a metal band anymore I just think that's my that's my personal reason why he changed being being the elder statesman in quotes of the podcast here I was I remember when they very first came out but being older than everyone else and I just remember the progress and then when that album came out in 91 literally everyone we're in a gym in college shooting playing basketball and everyone just stopped and we're like what is this what happened this band I remember from 83 you know I already know that's not a true story because you've never

01:13:55.460 --> 01:13:56.880
in the gym and you're like...

01:13:59.100 --> 01:14:01.520
Let me tell you something right now, Jay.

01:14:02.840 --> 01:14:06.280
You guys can laugh all you want, but I'd school all your asses in one second.

01:14:06.550 --> 01:14:07.000
Trust me.

01:14:07.000 --> 01:14:07.560
I believe you.

01:14:07.920 --> 01:14:09.120
Trust me on that one.

01:14:09.380 --> 01:14:10.220
That I can see.

01:14:10.560 --> 01:14:11.840
Meet up in the mat room, Jay.

01:14:12.540 --> 01:14:14.140
I don't think it's dinged on that.

01:14:14.560 --> 01:14:15.140
No, no, no.

01:14:15.980 --> 01:14:17.060
You can laugh all you want.

01:14:17.240 --> 01:14:19.180
You guys look like a bunch of ass clowns on the court.

01:14:19.350 --> 01:14:19.740
Trust me.

01:14:20.400 --> 01:14:21.000
I love you, son.

01:14:21.000 --> 01:14:21.600
It's just me, guys.

01:14:22.260 --> 01:14:25.200
We can end the whole discussion about this.

01:14:25.280 --> 01:14:54.840
You ask the majority of people, like we're about to do our top five favorite Metallica songs, probably if we were to poll 50 people, probably 75% would say Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters. You know, those songs. The songs, if I never hear Enter Sandman again, I would die a happy man. By the way, if anyone has any of the top five that's post-1991, I'm quitting a fucking podcast. I'll be surprised. I don't think you're going to have to quit, Will. I would doubt that very much. That does not include you. Dustin.

01:14:57.320 --> 01:15:23.440
I don't care what you guys think. I'm with you. Unless it's off sinning. Hey, Will, you committed to that now. Just like all the celebrities, you committed to leaving. Oh, yeah. I'm moving to Canada, damn it. Zach, you haven't spoken a lot on this. Do you hear talk from your friends or anybody? Was anybody excited for this album in your circle, Zach? Not at all, no. There you go. Yeah.

01:15:24.900 --> 01:15:54.720
I see people posting it on Facebook and saying, oh, this is great. But they're kind of the people that, like Dustin said, just want to listen to mainstream heavy music. Like, oh, it's the new Metallica album. This is the same people. You know who was excited that this album came out on Friday? The same people who fucking day one are buying Avenged Sevenfold tickets. Yeah, you're right. It gives them some legitimacy. You know what? I wasn't any more excited about this than I would be if the Rolling Stones were coming out with a new record.

01:15:54.900 --> 01:16:24.180
I do too, but they're not about to make their most amazing record. No. George, you know what? I'm thinking more about this. Death Magnetic was start to finish a solid album. Now to come that this is a double album, I think there are too many ebbs and flows. Honestly, the only song I didn't really care for, but I give him a pass on it because it was about Lemmy is Murder One. Okay, because you know what changed me today when after I got off the phone with you, you said,

01:16:24.920 --> 01:16:54.880
it again and I did uh that Atlas Rise I'm like man this is it's a good like in fact Atlas Rise has quite a bit of Iron Maiden like influence on there I think but then this uh unkind human or something like that it's man unkind yeah man unkind I'm like oh man this is not good this is not good at all but I will I have to say this though it's obviously the money that Metallica can put into an album yeah Zach and Dustin why can't you guys album sound like this no I'm just I'm just

01:16:55.440 --> 01:17:00.140
This album sounds amazing.

01:17:00.580 --> 01:17:05.600
Also, one thing to note, this is the first album they've released on their own, so they get every dollar on this thing, man.

01:17:05.790 --> 01:17:06.560
I'm not sharing it with anybody.

01:17:07.160 --> 01:17:08.060
And I add more power to them.

01:17:08.060 --> 01:17:08.440
You know what I mean?

01:17:08.490 --> 01:17:10.700
Hey, I'm a supporter in the broadest sense of the word.

01:17:10.960 --> 01:17:19.880
You know, I pre-ordered, aside from the triple vinyl that I pre-ordered, I also pre-ordered the high-definition 2496 Flack.

01:17:20.040 --> 01:17:20.240
Damn.

01:17:21.440 --> 01:17:23.860
And I downloaded that on Friday when it came out.

01:17:24.120 --> 01:17:53.320
And then this morning I had an email from Metallica saying people were complaining about the dynamic range on the 2496. And so they're giving us a free download of a 2444.1 version. Wait, wait, wait. Somebody complained about the sound. A free download of St. Anger. I was like, oh, wow. And then compare the two and tell us it sucks. Yeah. But I was like, really? I thought it sounded all right. Hey, if I could jump in here real quick, because I got to go help.

01:17:53.420 --> 01:18:23.380
I got to put my kids to bed real quick. But a couple things I wanted to say, I'll come back, but a couple things I want to say real quick is I feel like Metallica sold us a bill of goods here a little bit because Hardwired was a pretty decent song. It did sound like something that could have came from Death Magnetic. I will say that. Atlas Rise and Malt of Flame were half decent songs, not terrible, but not like super great. One thing that kind of angered me a little bit is... Did you say it saint angered you? No, never mind. Yes. Like the song Confused.

01:18:23.420 --> 01:18:52.360
So it's about the military and PTSD and all that stuff. Just listening to some of the lyrics kind of offhand and what Metallica has made some phenomenal military theme song, you know, think of disposable heroes. One. It's like this song just did not do the subject justice at all. And I was I was a little I have to say I'm a little annoyed by that. There was one song that kind of reminded me of that wasn't so horrible. Remind me more of an Alice in Chains song. I want to say maybe it was Dream No More.

01:18:53.500 --> 01:19:22.200
Yeah. Is that that? Yeah. Yeah. It kind of reminded me more of an Alice in Chains song. And it kind of like the lyrical content may have been cool, but I thought the song was just grungy. I happen to know they were big. They were big fans of that band. So that's not a surprise. And then the song Spit Out the Bone starts off great and then just kind of like, meh. And then everything else is just sort of. It sounds it sounds like this is an album full of a lot of filler. Yeah. Middle of the road, dude. Yeah. No one's going to remember 90 percent of this album.

01:19:22.320 --> 01:19:52.280
And aside from Hardwired, I doubt they would ever play any songs live after this tour that they're going to go promote and make a billion dollars on. With that said, I need to go. You're going to leave her when we start the list. No, no, no, no. You're going to have hours to talk about this album. I want to say this. We wonder why Opeth sometimes is still discussed in heavy metal media. And I think it goes without saying that with the pedigree that Metallica has, they will always be talking about.

01:19:52.680 --> 01:19:56.080
Yeah, well, they're the biggest metal band in the world.

01:19:56.360 --> 01:19:56.820
Yeah, ever.

01:19:57.700 --> 01:20:02.980
They will, until all of them pass away, they will always be talked about.

01:20:03.170 --> 01:20:04.580
They have become the institution.

01:20:05.200 --> 01:20:05.740
Yeah, they are.

01:20:05.940 --> 01:20:06.560
They're the Beatles of metal.

01:20:06.560 --> 01:20:11.060
You know what I think the, not that, I hate to think of this as Will Walks Away.

01:20:11.230 --> 01:20:14.300
You know, John and I were talking about this at the Opeth show.

01:20:14.760 --> 01:20:17.500
Mike can't do old Opeth well anymore.

01:20:17.980 --> 01:20:21.940
And I think it was hard for him to come out and say that, and that's what brought about their change.

01:20:22.140 --> 01:20:52.100
Yes, Metallica is older, but James still sounds amazing. Oh, he's in the best shape of his life. I think the thing is, we're all sitting here, and it just came to me. You think to yourself, it has to still be there, the ability to do that. Age has an effect, dude. It does, absolutely, 100%. We look at, like, George, we talked about this a couple years back with the new Iron Maiden a couple years ago. Iron Maiden has had some missteps along the way, but the Iron Maiden

01:20:52.160 --> 01:21:22.100
you're getting now is almost you know in the same vein as like a power slave maiden i agree why has maiden been able to maintain it and metallica can't go back to that i don't know i think their influences are too big and wide they're too sucked into the rest of the whole media world they don't live in a heavy metal box in the sense where in jay do you mean like in the sense where maiden is maiden and metallica is the pop radio hard rock station band kind of because people you might conceivably

01:21:22.140 --> 01:21:51.320
hear a news story in which they're talking about popular bands and they might mention U2, Metallica, and another band. They would never mention Maiden. They grew up out of this whole other weird underground box and they're just not part of that scene anymore. And they still influence the scene and people still like them, but they're different. I said this in the last episode, they're a corporation now. And that's fine. There's nothing wrong with that, but that's what they are. And for my money, you're not going to get a real creative record out of a corporation. Bless their heart. That's a great point because they have so many factors that they have to think about too.

01:21:52.140 --> 01:22:22.080
that they have to please. Bye-bye. Bree, you want to say goodnight? Yeah, goodnight. Well, let's get out of this topic. Yeah, let's get out of this topic. Yeah, let's talk about something completely different. Can I quickly say something to end this topic? By no means is this a horrible album. No, sure. And I'm not saying it's a great one. I think we have such passionate discussion because all of us, to speak for all, what, five or six of us here,

01:22:22.140 --> 01:22:50.820
We're all fans of the band. And we all want it to be what it truly can be. I'll tell you what, though, guys. Last point. Wouldn't it rock the fucking metal world if we got another Master of Puppets? Could you imagine 2016 if that type of album came out? What if they pulled a trypticon and they just fucking came out in corpse paint and they were just like... That would have been cool. That would be cool.

01:22:52.160 --> 01:23:21.720
It never happened. Ironically, Will was gone and we were talking about beer. Yeah. Will, he was, Dustin's drinking one of the beers you brought in for, I think, one of the mid-mid-year episodes. A blacker? Was that a blacker? Yeah, blacker. Well done, sir. Who released it? I'm assuming it's a surly release? Yep. Is anybody drinking anything that we want to talk about before we get back in? Wait, have you guys literally been not recording this whole time or what? Yeah, we waited for you. Yeah, we took a bathroom break and then we talked about beer. We don't go without you, Will.

01:23:21.800 --> 01:23:51.760
God damn it, you never leave a man behind. Oh, well, thanks, man. Appreciate it. Yeah, because I still want to hear George's defense of this new album. Oh, no. We're going on to the top five. Yeah, you're going to have to listen to the show on that one. So why don't we move on to our top five list, which

01:23:51.780 --> 01:24:21.680
Not too surprisingly is the top five favorite Metallica songs. Now for Dustin and Zach this is how we do this. We've got our top five. Five being the lowest. One being the highest. And we start off by going around to everybody and everybody lists their five. And then we go back around and list the fours and threes and twos all the way down to the number ones. As guests you guys get to go first. You can decide which of you wants to go before the other. And then it'll go on from there to John to Will to Jay.

01:24:21.800 --> 01:24:51.720
to Buke myself and then we start back at you guys again. Let's roll. I'm tweaking my list and I have a beer to come back with, George, and then we can go. Okay. I'm happy to go first whenever. All right. Well, before we get started on the list, Buke, what are you drinking now? Yep. Will, while we were off going to a potty. The fuck am I? I'm 33 saying potty. You have a little girl, dude. I say the same thing all the time. While we were using the bathrooms, Will asked if anybody was drinking anything new. One of my favorite local breweries, probably the best local brewery in the state of Maryland.

01:24:51.800 --> 01:25:20.680
Flying Dog, one of their new Christmas releases. This is their Naughty. They do a Naughty and Nice every year. Their Naughty this year is a Eggnog Ale. Ooh, I want to try that. It's ale brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and natural flavors. I will say this about Flying Dog is they come off with some really off-the-wall stuff, but 99.9% of the time, it works. This is, George, you will like this. I know you very well, my friend. You will like this. They're like literally five minutes from my house, so I will definitely stop by and pick some up.

01:25:22.120 --> 01:25:50.480
Well, Dustin, what are you drinking officially? Officially, this is the surly release of Blacker, Imperial Black Ale. Absolutely metal tallboy can here. Doing well proud with metal beer. And I'm going to nerd out, and I picked this up in Atlanta for Prog Power. This is the Star Trek 50th Anniversary Golden Anniversary Ale. Nerd alert! Nerd beer. Get yourself.

01:25:51.340 --> 01:26:21.120
Who made that? Um, hold on a second. Romulans. Yeah. Yeah. Schmaltz. So yeah, the, the Borg. Yeah. It's by Schmaltz. Whoever that is. Wait, so is, so they really made some sort of royalties to Gene Roddenberry's estate to put that on the label or what? Yeah. It even says the trouble with trebles at the bottom. Oh my God. That, that episode right there is why I think Star Trek sucks. There's a URL in the back says federation of beer.com. Anyway, before, before,

01:26:21.320 --> 01:26:51.280
We do our lists. George, you're my best friend. I believe I have your number one. I'm just, I'm going to keep it to myself, but I believe I have your number one. And I think you and I have the same number one. I've been your best friend for a long time, and I believe I have it. You probably do. It's nothing surprising. Let's go around. John, what are you drinking? Water. I am drinking a water in my slash custom-made glass from a photographer that I know because I have to be up at 4.15 in the morning to go to work. Not to go to work.

01:26:51.340 --> 01:27:21.260
to get in your underwear and be on your computer. Let's not kid around. I'm actually going to the office tomorrow. What? I'm in the office tomorrow. Oh, right. Yeah. I go one day a week. Lay off him. He has to deal with traffic, okay? Oh, no. I know it. Five o'clock in the morning traffic. John, did you actually put on a suit and a tie? Fuck no. I was going to say, I'd love to see that. I wear jeans to work. Okay. All right. Dustin, you're number five. Hold on. Wait, man.

01:27:21.320 --> 01:27:51.140
What we're doing? You didn't let people finish what they're drinking? You know how many people probably listen to the pod and they're like, come on, guys. Fucking get on with it. Okay, well, I thought everybody had already said what they were drinking. If you don't like it, stop listening. I'm drinking a Hardywood Park down in Richmond. They're Vanalia Urbana. It's a white wine barrel age Belgian style golden ale, and it's delicious. A friend of mine just sent me a bottle of that. Yeah, I don't know who. It was good. It was great. I don't have any friends sending me that.

01:27:51.340 --> 01:28:20.560
Jay's eating. Everything's par for the course. George, do you have any friends sending you beers? No. Do you have any friends sending you beers? Nope. Jack, you? No. Did he mention that I did? I do, though. Jay sent me beers, so I sent him some back. You know what? When I see you, I bring beer, so suck a dick. Are we now ready? I have a mailbox. I drink beers. George, we're doing a top five. What are we doing?

01:28:21.340 --> 01:28:48.820
the 12th time now. We're doing our top five Metallica songs. And we're going to start with Dustin. Fantastic. Well, I like to start with a controversial note. So I'm going to say All Nightmare Long. I love that song. Death Magnetic. I love that song. That's my favorite song on that album. It is a good song. No problems there. Yeah. And just, if nothing else, to hear James Hetfield have, I don't know if he has any good ones on this past album, I wasn't paying attention, but Your Luck Runs Out.

01:28:51.320 --> 01:29:20.320
He kind of reigned it in a little bit on this new album. I think he was getting fun of that too much. But yeah. All right. So Zach, you're number five. My number five is Bleeding Me off of Load. Wow. I like that song too. It's a good song. Will, untie the rope. Okay. Step off the stool. No, I'm with you. Will, I feel like I got kicked in the chest a couple of times already. It was nice having Will on the podcast.

01:29:21.320 --> 01:29:51.240
I was going to say, I get to move up in the list here. Wait, let me hang myself so I can come back and go, I'm not dead yet. I think I'll go for a walk. I'm feeling better. John. Don't worry, Will. I'll do you proud here. This is my list as of today. It'll change tomorrow. Number five, Trapped Under Ice. Almost picked it. That's a good one. That's almost like in a weird sort of way, a deep track. I think it was my very first deep track, Will, when we started that. Yeah, but you're not.

01:29:51.340 --> 01:30:21.200
My number five, I did feel the need to put something on this list from the first four albums. So my number five is The Four Horsemen. Our jaw link nearer. Off kill them all. Right on. Sweet. I will say this. I could have easily just made five songs from Master of Puppets. Easily. I almost did. But with that stated, might have heard this a million times. I'm sure you all have. It doesn't mean it's not one of the greatest metal songs of all time for whom the bell tolls. Oh, yeah. That's too easy.

01:30:21.320 --> 01:30:49.600
It is easy, but I almost put it on there too. Beak what do you got? Maybe the song, and Will, you may never talk to me again. It's a newer song, maybe made better by it being on S&M. I absolutely love that live album. It's a very special song to me. The lyrics are very special to me. Hero of the day. I considered it. It's the only newer song I considered. Absolutely amazing song. Very, very touching song to me. It's a good song. All right.

01:30:51.340 --> 01:31:21.300
200 pounds. How strong does that noose need to be? Well, it's probably more, is the ceiling going to hold you? Yeah. If it's just going to pull out of the... Where's the structural engineer to test the load on the joices of my bass? Quick side note, did you listen to S&M? No, fuck no. Okay. Of course not. Back to Dustin. No, actually me. I haven't done my... George. George. Jay, stop trying to skip me. Oh, I'm sorry. But, you know, I mean, what is it going to be? It won't be interesting. It won't be interesting. It's not going to be a song

01:31:21.320 --> 01:31:50.220
that's on anybody else's list. Go ahead. Number five from Ride the Lightning, Escape. That was one of my deep tracks. You're right. That won't be on it. The band themselves hate it, but I love it. Is that the one that they hate? They refuse to ever play? Yeah, they didn't play it for like 28 years or something. At the Orion Festival or something they had to play, right? Yeah, that's right. Back to Dustin for number four. My number four, No Leaf Clover off S&M. Oh, okay. You sir are getting a shake of ovation.

01:31:51.340 --> 01:32:20.900
I love that. Thank you. Yes. Yes. It's. Yeah. Oh, God. The age. The age is becoming quickly apparent. It's a killer performance, too. So it is. Yeah. Will's done again. Will's died again. Keep it going, Zach. What do you bring? My number four is Dyer's Eve. Oh, yeah. Yes. That's a good one. That'll be on a few more lists, I expect. It will. That was the album when the wheels started to come off. And I know I'm alone on that. But yeah.

01:32:21.320 --> 01:32:50.540
All right, John. Hey, Will, before you hang yourself, can you leave the key under the mat? Because I want to grab your beer. Is that cool? I feel like I should have a clause by Will. Like, hey, if I ever die, just give all my beer to John. I have made it known to George numerous times. If something does happen to you, George, all your CDs and stuff, old Buke over here is willing and ready. All right. My number four is Hit the Lights. Oh, a song that started it all. Yep. Right on. Jay.

01:32:51.320 --> 01:33:19.480
Oh, sorry. Wait, are you Will or are you Jay? We haven't done that in a while. That's right. You know, it actually happened a couple episodes ago and no one caught it except for me. I'm pretty sure it was Bukku who said it. My number four, Creeping Death. Nice. I'll pry the way. Solid. Yeah, go wrong there. I'm the only one that's going to have probably something off this record, but I don't care. And this was the best summer when this record came out. The Small Hours off the Garage EP. Oh, yeah. I didn't even think about including anything off there.

01:33:22.580 --> 01:33:50.900
So heavy. Is that Garage Incorporated? Garage they've already revisited. The 590 ADP, the original one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. All right. So you're muted, buddy. You're muted. I always do that fucking shit. This, I can put this on every time and it brings a smile to my face. I thought I was going to be special here and do something a little different. It's not even their own stuff, but I fucking love it. Garage Inc. The Merciful Fate Medley. Pretty great.

01:33:51.000 --> 01:34:20.960
That's awesome. Awesome. I got to say before I say my number four here, it's good to start hearing all this positive stuff about Mattel. Except for Will Hanging himself. You will know most of it comes from the past, George. Yes. It's still positive. My number four, Master of Puppets. Nice. And back to Dustin. All right. Well, this was my number three now. And isn't one of the ones I listen to a lot now? No. But it was the first song I ever heard. And I think it still stands up, at least in my mind. King Nothing. I like it.

01:34:21.000 --> 01:34:22.660
That is your crown king.

01:34:23.600 --> 01:34:25.540
One of the modern songs I do like, True Enough.

01:34:26.680 --> 01:34:27.600
What album is that on?

01:34:27.940 --> 01:34:28.240
That's Lode.

01:34:29.780 --> 01:34:30.740
Lode, I think.

01:34:31.240 --> 01:34:32.280
Or it's like, oh, Lode.

01:34:32.480 --> 01:34:33.600
So I have to go check that album out.

01:34:34.900 --> 01:34:37.120
Yeah, it's gotten quite a bit of representation so far.

01:34:37.420 --> 01:34:38.080
All right, Zach.

01:34:39.020 --> 01:34:40.840
My number three is Master of Puppets.

01:34:41.040 --> 01:34:41.360
Nice.

01:34:41.560 --> 01:34:41.900
Very nice.

01:34:42.290 --> 01:34:47.280
Is it me or every time one of us does a song, this is like a hangman game for Will?

01:34:47.740 --> 01:34:48.220
You know?

01:34:51.160 --> 01:35:17.800
I mean, he's got, he's got another arm now. You live, you die. He's got that one. He's got his stick leg out there. All right. Well, I'm going to keep you alive for another round here. I love you. Like Jay, I, maybe one of the more popular songs, but the riffs just crush room, the bell tolls. Oh yeah. That's one of the military songs I'm sort of talking about. It's overplayed. It's overplayed. That's true.

01:35:18.240 --> 01:35:48.040
It is, but it still crushes every time. It is. It's a great song, yes. What I was saying a little bit earlier is easily this top five list for me could either came from, I mean, predominantly Master of Puppets. I could easily name top five from there, and I felt like just the need to diversify a little bit. It could easily came from Ride the Lightning, and a little bit less so, but I could pick five songs from Kill Em All. That's phenomenal. But what did you go with? So my number three, and my top three could all be number one,

01:35:48.100 --> 01:36:18.020
But my number three, Dire's Eve. Wow. Off Justice for All. Lining up with Zach there. Yeah. No, wait, no, that was your four, wasn't it? Yeah, four. Yep. Jay. Really? Sorry, I was distracted. Uh, Orion. Sorry, I think I skipped one. But yeah, Jay, you should have went before me. But anyway, we're in the spot. No, he's after you. Mine is Orion from Master of Puppets. I really wanted to put that on my list. It's a great song. It is. I love that song. And that is the essence of Cliff right there, too. Not that I,

01:36:18.100 --> 01:36:48.000
A Huge Cliff Booster or Anything That's a Great Song. Yep. All right, Buke, number three. And Justice For All. Nice. Yeah, it was hard leaving that one off for me, too. I really like that one. I wish to add a quick cliff note. I think all these songs are better modern. I think a lot of these songs sound better modern, like 90s to late 90s James voice, I think. I think his young voice sometimes is kind of strained at times. I love a more mature Hetfield singing some of these songs. Oh, yeah.

01:37:17.240 --> 01:37:18.080
Yeah.

01:37:18.100 --> 01:37:47.640
This is what I like. It speaks to me. Alright. Now back to Dustin for number two. My number two is Four Horsemen. Nice. Just driving riffs, man. Yeah. Okay, exactly. Do you know, wait, hold on. Hey, Dustin, do you know the other song, which sounds exactly like it, from another Big Four band? That's too easy. Yeah, the original version. It was written by Dave Mustaine. I don't know this, no. It was written by Dave Mustaine. It was a pop quiz.

01:37:48.100 --> 01:38:18.000
Thanks for ruining it. We're ruining it. No, no, no. He can still answer it. Yeah. Well, he just needs to give you the song title. I'm just giving him clues here. It's done by Megadeth. He hasn't shot it yet. It's not coming. I don't know it. I don't know it. Go on, Will. Sorry. There's a song called Mechanics off Killing Is My Business, Business Is Good by Megadeth. And when Dave Mustaine was originally in Metallica, I guess Mustaine wrote the song. And so he took the song Music and wrote Mechanics, which is literally about fixing cars. Actually, it was.

01:38:18.120 --> 01:38:47.980
It was about like it was like sex and stuff original lyrics and that's why they changed them and did something a little less retarded. Yeah. So Horseman is a way better song than mechanics. It is. Yeah. But anyway, it's the same music. It's exactly. Yeah. But Mustaine has writing credits all up into Ride the Lightning even. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Now, Zach, we were on number two, right? Yep. True that. My number two is Trapped Under Ice. Hey, there you go, John. There we go. All right.

01:38:48.100 --> 01:39:18.060
My number two is Harvester of Sorrow. Way to not mute before feeding the fish or whatever that is. We got all of that. That choice. Yeah. All right. Yeah. So that was Trapped Under Ice, right? Good choice. Yes, sir. All right. No, actually it was Harvester of Sorrow. That was John. I'm sorry. I totally missed John. It's all right. It happens all the time. Don't worry about it. Not on the podcast elsewhere in my life. At least I didn't say, what did I do last time with

01:39:18.100 --> 01:39:46.980
I said, what's the Tiamat album? It was actually a pretty good title. Shit, I forgot what it was now. Anyway. All right, Will, number two. My number two, Disposable Heroes. That is definitely being a United States Marine. That song speaks to me. And when I talk about songwriting and lyrics and stuff where they're at now, Disposable Heroes is a song that comes to mind. You look at the lyrics to that song, unbelievable. Amazing. They do not write. They don't write lyrics like that anymore. Nope.

01:39:48.080 --> 01:40:18.060
I used to like that song back when it was on 8 track in my El Camino. Yeah, those are the days. Jay, number two. Master of Puppets. Oh, nice. Fishman. I mean, Buke. John and I were in line again. Harvest Service RO. Made better. Well, I have to say the version, though, that is my number two is off of Binge and Purge. I fucking love it. When they stopped the song, James Hock

01:40:18.100 --> 01:40:47.860
the big fucking spit and they just go back into it. I love it. I fucking love it. All right. It's not on my list, but a little love for Freda and Sassanity, too. Please, somebody. All right. Oh, yeah. My number two is Damage Inc. Nice. All right. Back to Dustin for his number one. All right. For number one, you cannot stop the battery. Battery is number one. That was almost my number two. I didn't get my list at all, but it was in contention. Zach. Mine is also battery.

01:40:51.600 --> 01:41:17.620
I finally have a song off of Master of Puppets and it's The Thing That Should Never Be. Nice. Or The Thing That Should Not Be. You cleaned up the grammar a little bit. AJ, I threw a little Led Zeppelin in there too. Yeah, if you leave here tomorrow. Number one, Damage Incorporated. Ooh, yeah. Hey, United States Marines, what do we do?

01:41:19.080 --> 01:41:47.920
I will say that it was very hard for me to leave off this list Master Puppets, Sanitarium, and Battery. I literally could have made a whole top five list just off Master Puppets, which is one of the greatest albums ever made. Yes, it is. I don't think I'm going to be alone on this one. I'm almost positive. Disposable Heroes. Nice. I love you, Jay. Slow clap. Slow clap. There it is. I might see some more number ones coming my way from that. Well, there's only two left.

01:41:50.320 --> 01:42:18.040
Yeah, but I have a few, at least one of them. Buke, are you going to leave him hanging? My boy Jay, back to the fucking front. Back to the front. Disposable heroes. There it is. Not surprising there either. I love you guys. So, Buke, what's your prediction? Fade to Black. You are correct, sir. Fade to Black. Wow. Actually, I'm actually surprised no one has said that. Like, we have seven people here going through 35 songs, and Fade to Black has only been mentioned once. I'm surprised by that.

01:42:18.100 --> 01:42:30.780
That's the song that I played a million times in high school when it was brand new. Yeah. All right. So that's our top five. We're going to move on now and do what we are listening to.

01:42:55.500 --> 01:43:17.960
So again for Dustin and Zach, this is where you have the opportunity to list some albums that you've been listening to lately. You can do one, you can do a handful. It's up to you. I used to do like 20 of them until people gave me shit. Now I've reined myself in. We didn't give you shit. We really appreciated it every time we got to hear Sleep. Yeah, well, let's just say there's going to be a new outlet.

01:43:18.080 --> 01:43:19.180
for that coming soon.

01:43:20.140 --> 01:43:20.920
Oh, yeah.

01:43:24.280 --> 01:43:25.080
Wait, wait, George.

01:43:25.320 --> 01:43:26.580
George, are you going to Philly in April?

01:43:26.820 --> 01:43:27.140
Probably not.

01:43:27.360 --> 01:43:27.760
You suck.

01:43:27.900 --> 01:43:28.160
Yeah, I know.

01:43:28.990 --> 01:43:29.460
But I just won't.

01:43:29.740 --> 01:43:30.780
Jay, you coming out, please?

01:43:31.000 --> 01:43:32.820
I'm going to be in April.

01:43:33.400 --> 01:43:36.220
I'm going to be up by you in April, the early April, unfortunately.

01:43:36.620 --> 01:43:36.820
For what?

01:43:36.920 --> 01:43:38.100
So I'm going to see you in April.

01:43:38.260 --> 01:43:38.580
For what?

01:43:38.660 --> 01:43:39.180
At work thing.

01:43:39.420 --> 01:43:41.840
But I'm going to stay a little bit long so we can all get together.

01:43:42.080 --> 01:43:42.740
Maybe do a pod.

01:43:43.290 --> 01:43:43.800
Where are you going?

01:43:43.940 --> 01:43:44.460
Where are you staying?

01:43:45.040 --> 01:43:47.020
Right down on where we stay.

01:43:47.820 --> 01:44:17.440
For the, I thought. No, I'm in Baltimore. Oh, really? Yeah. All right. So, Dustin, what you been listening to? Well, as we're getting closer to winter, I got to start queuing up my favorite black metal band that's Immortal. Immortal. And we're not quite at the heart. We're not at the heart of winter yet. So, I've been listening to All Shall Fall, which I think it's underrated. I don't know. You know what? I don't think it is on this podcast. I think Battles in the North is the most. No? Okay, cool.

01:44:17.840 --> 01:44:18.320
We all love that.

01:44:18.680 --> 01:44:19.520
I listened to pretty much.

01:44:20.260 --> 01:44:23.040
But that's because I drove through a blizzard while listening to that album.

01:44:23.130 --> 01:44:24.600
So which I don't know what I was thinking.

01:44:24.610 --> 01:44:26.620
I should have been listening to blizzard beasts in a blizzard.

01:44:26.780 --> 01:44:27.080
But hell,

01:44:27.210 --> 01:44:27.720
what I had.

01:44:28.100 --> 01:44:29.100
So also felt as awesome.

01:44:29.250 --> 01:44:29.660
I love it.

01:44:29.800 --> 01:44:29.900
Yeah.

01:44:30.020 --> 01:44:30.340
They're all good.

01:44:30.560 --> 01:44:30.800
Yeah.

01:44:31.000 --> 01:44:31.100
Yeah.

01:44:31.420 --> 01:44:31.480
I,

01:44:31.760 --> 01:44:31.920
you know,

01:44:32.000 --> 01:44:32.760
any song on there,

01:44:32.760 --> 01:44:33.440
I just kind of,

01:44:33.570 --> 01:44:34.540
I can roll with it.

01:44:34.680 --> 01:44:35.540
If there's snow,

01:44:35.680 --> 01:44:36.100
all the better.

01:44:37.240 --> 01:44:39.260
On a completely other end of the spectrum.

01:44:39.740 --> 01:44:42.040
I don't know if you guys know the band Amaranth.

01:44:42.280 --> 01:44:43.840
They're like sort of metal,

01:44:44.420 --> 01:44:46.840
sort of dance music coming out of Sweden.

01:44:47.560 --> 01:44:47.760
What?

01:44:47.800 --> 01:45:17.140
What? Hammer Ants? Yeah, they're at Prog Power next year, aren't they, John? I think so. Yeah, I think they are. So they have a female clean vocalist, a male clean vocalist, and a male kind of growler. They're at Prog Power, yes. Heavy synths and kind of just chuggy guitars and then a solo of Once A Song or something like that. And it's just catchy as hell. And it gets stuck in your head, even if you don't want it to. I don't mind it, but a lot of people would not want it.

01:45:17.180 --> 01:45:43.280
Do you like Baby Monat? You know, I wouldn't say I like them, but I definitely have an appreciation. I think catchy is fine. I have no problem with catchy music. No, me neither. And people who aren't trying to take themselves too seriously. About. Yeah, right. So more stuff. Yeah, yeah. Go, go, go. Well, more stuff. So the Kvailer Talk is mentioned before.

01:45:47.200 --> 01:46:16.760
driving music I've ever heard outside of ECC or something like that. That makes me feel so much less lonely because I think I'm the only one that really has a kind of true love for them on the show right now. And it's brilliant stuff. Oh, well. I enjoy it, but I'm not like head over heels. Not like you are. Yeah, I'm with George. I like it, but it's not like my number one kind of thing. It's right in my wheelhouse somehow, and I don't even know why it should be, but it is. So the other thing is, this is off of Soilworks' latest release, Death Resonance.

01:46:17.180 --> 01:46:46.860
And it's songs that were originally released on an EP called Beyond the Infinite, songs that didn't make their prior double album before that, which I think are just awesome. So for anybody who hasn't checked out that Soilwork kind of B-side and Rarity album, Death Resonance, I think it's totally worth it. Songs definitely hold up. You know, as somebody who loves Soilwork, I don't know why after, I'm looking it up, after figure number five, for some reason, I just,

01:46:47.180 --> 01:46:47.580
I don't know.

01:46:48.180 --> 01:46:49.580
I don't stabbing the drama.

01:46:49.920 --> 01:46:53.220
I got and I've had I have every every album since then.

01:46:53.420 --> 01:46:56.840
But after I was huge on figure number five and now it's your born chaos.

01:46:57.080 --> 01:46:59.700
But I just I don't know why I just stopped listening to them.

01:47:00.060 --> 01:47:00.120
Hmm.

01:47:00.360 --> 01:47:00.460
Hmm.

01:47:00.960 --> 01:47:01.120
OK.

01:47:01.140 --> 01:47:01.280
Well.

01:47:02.420 --> 01:47:02.820
No.

01:47:02.960 --> 01:47:03.060
No.

01:47:03.340 --> 01:47:03.460
No.

01:47:03.460 --> 01:47:07.320
But I'm just saying if it doesn't if you like it, I'll definitely check, you know, give it a listen.

01:47:07.580 --> 01:47:08.200
We're here for.

01:47:08.380 --> 01:47:08.980
Yeah, it's worth it.

01:47:08.980 --> 01:47:09.200
I think.

01:47:09.740 --> 01:47:13.060
Didn't they know the ride majestic came out last year.

01:47:13.240 --> 01:47:13.380
OK.

01:47:13.540 --> 01:47:13.680
Yeah.

01:47:13.840 --> 01:47:14.160
Anything else?

01:47:14.320 --> 01:47:15.440
So, yeah, that's that's it.

01:47:15.540 --> 01:47:15.660
Yeah.

01:47:15.900 --> 01:47:15.960
Cool.

01:47:16.240 --> 01:47:45.560
Zach, what are you listening to? I have a couple here. They're all actually, I guess you could call them local or unsigned bands. I've been kind of in that lately. The first one is a band, I believe they're from London, Ontario, called Yeti on Horseback. You know what, the thing is, they were going to make them. I was going to mention them, Zach. My band. There we go. Alright, yeah, their album, The Great Dying.

01:47:46.220 --> 01:48:16.180
I've just been rocking that lately. Just some great doom metal. Another one is the band is called John 12. 12 is spelled in Roman numerals. So XII. The album is Depraved Indifference. I know them. Arbor books through a guy. I believe, yeah, he's the singer in this band, Dax, in Toronto. And I don't know, they're kind of like hard.

01:48:16.280 --> 01:48:46.160
Hardcore crossover with kind of thrash metal. Yeah, they're great. Check them out. Another one is Infernal Altar from Eau Claire. We played with them, I think, twice now, or maybe just once. Utkiaru has. They have a demo called False Hammer. It's kind of just, you know, that traditional, really raw kind of black metal stuff. I think it's just a three or four song demo. Pretty good stuff.

01:48:46.240 --> 01:49:13.960
And then my last one, also a Canadian band, Vow of Thorns, their new album, Farewell to the Sun. And Dustin and I have both known them and played shows with them with Arbor for a couple of years now. That one is more atmospheric black metal. Also very good, though. Check out Vow of Thorns. Yeah, I'll be looking that up. You know if they're on Bandcamp or anything? Yep, they definitely are. All those bands are, yep. Sweet, I'll be checking it out. Cool. All right, John.

01:49:16.220 --> 01:49:43.220
for the most part, I guess. Lotus Thief, Grammarie. We've talked about them, I guess, a little bit. Been listening to that a lot lately. The New Animals as Leaders, The Madness of Many, Insomnian, Winter's Gate. I mentioned these guys last time. They only had two tracks out, but the full release dropped since the last podcast. Trees of Eternity, Hour of the Nightingale, and a new kind of psychedelic black metal band I just found from Greece called Hail Spirit Nor. And it's Mayhem and Blue.

01:49:43.260 --> 01:50:12.960
I like the earlier stuff a lot. I haven't given this one. I liked the little bit that I heard of this one, but definitely check out like their first album. It's pretty awesome. Oh, yeah. From what I understand, all three are not completely different, but definitely different than each one. Yes. They're all unique to themselves. They're a little avant-garde. Yeah, definitely. This is a little more psychedelic, I think, than avant-garde this one. Yeah. Will. That's it. I'm pretty much going to skip this segment because, as I usually do, whatever I'm listening to lately is what I've, my mom,

01:50:13.260 --> 01:50:43.220
My Vinyl Purchases or whatever. Gotcha. The only thing I can say is I've been listening to a lot of Metallica lately to get ready for this segment. But for the most part, I'm going to skip to what my vinyl purchases, i.e. digital downloads. So I'll pass it on to Jay. Pretty brief list. I got the Palender record, which I mentioned last time, is still drilling a hole through my brain, which means I had to go back and give Witchcraft record another chance.

01:50:43.280 --> 01:50:47.280
I think I'd only listen to it like once and it's like the greatest thing ever so witchcraft

01:50:47.440 --> 01:51:13.240
nucleus I remember so then I'm like whatever new witchcraft they didn't they're not as good as they used to be so I'm not knocking you I'm just I think it's cool that you like came around on it it's their best record I think um also and also the only other one I didn't own was legend so I went and bought that um these all on vinyl it's the new witchcraft we're doing what we're listening to but excuse me is this um is the new witchcraft out this year as well was that like January February yeah okay it's like February I think

01:51:14.040 --> 01:51:43.180
The Super Joint record I listened to, which by the way, they changed their name Buke to Super Joint. They dropped the ritual. They did. Yep. Is this the first record for that? It is. Yeah, the first record on the Super Joint name. It's dirty. It's punky. It's kind of dirty, blacky, punky. It's good. Do you know which guy it is Buke that's fucking it up for everybody? The drummer. Yeah. Maybe attached to this episode will be a... Never mind. Skip it. Skip it. In other words, he owns the title or something? Yeah. Okay. And then finally, George, when you mentioned me a while,

01:51:43.240 --> 01:52:13.220
that's kind of rolled back around me is uh bewitcher was this um you turned it on to me when i was listening to um um a cold burial yeah and um also um i did spend some time listening to your boy's record this week i'm not going to try to say your name because no matter how many times it's been said i don't have it right but um thank you um give that a good few spins this weekend and by and really did not tell you during the interview that i really enjoy it very much thank you next an album that i have been awaiting for a while now we need

01:52:13.240 --> 01:52:42.500
New Debut album from Serpentine Dominion. This is Corpse Grinder. This is Adam from Killswitch Engage. This is Will's buddy on drums, Shannon Lucas. I've tried to get him for the podcast to work in progress. But picture Corpse Grinder, death metal vocals, and at times, clean vocals. Adam is bringing in his clean vocals. It comes together and it sounds amazing.

01:52:43.380 --> 01:53:12.080
Will told me he had this album for a long time and I know he probably couldn't share it but I am loving this album and I wish he would have shared it. It seems a little sacrolegious to have clean vocals with Corpse Grinders. Serpentine Dominion. It's their self-titled. Is it actually out now? It's out. I'm loving it. Another band that almost has a heavier death sound. They've had a couple albums out there but Asphix. Asphix. Asphix. Yeah their new album Incoming Death.

01:53:13.240 --> 01:53:43.100
Asphyx as in like asphyxiate? Yes. I sent that to Will. Make sure he checks that out. It's in the box. Yeah, I have it. I like it. Yep. The Yeti on the horseback and a band Black Table and their album Obelisk. Right on. Let's see what have I got. There's a sort of an atmospheric doom band called Clouds and their latest album. I want to say it's Depart. It's got like a little French little E on the end and all of it's like Departé. Did you get that from metal? Was that on Metal Band Camp? Is that where you got that?

01:53:43.700 --> 01:54:13.200
Might have been, might have been. I remember seeing, I've actually heard of them before on one of their previous albums and like forgot about them before I ended up picking up anything because I was like, Clouds, what kind of a dumb name is Clouds? I mean, come on. But it's actually pretty good. But I think I was reminded of them when I saw Metal Bandcamp. Next album isn't remotely metal, although it's kind of metal. It's a band, actually it's probably not a band, it's probably a dude called Electric Dragon and the album Covenant. This is like that heavy

01:54:13.240 --> 01:54:43.000
dark electronic music that's, I don't know, you know, like Ghost without an H or Perturbator, you know, that kind of thing going around. So it's like dark, but it's not, it's just electronic stuff. It's cool. Here's my question for that. So I know you can't have a band by the same name, technically. You can have songs by the same name. That's no big deal. Can you have albums by the same name? Because Morbid Angel has an album, Covenant.

01:54:43.220 --> 01:55:13.200
Sure. I would assume you have to be able to have bands out with a name. If I tried hard enough, I could think of five precedents right off the top of my head. Next up is the band Crypts with a K and their latest remnants of expansion, death and doom. Next up, a band mentioned actually by our friends in Hyperion, Netherbird, and their long-awaited... I don't know how long... Didn't he say they were broken up but not broken up? Anyway...

01:55:13.220 --> 01:55:41.740
Their new album is called The Grander Voyage. It's pretty cool. It's black metal. Check it out. Can I remind people, if you have not heard Hyperion, Sierra Cool Euphonic, please do yourself a favor before the end of the year and check that album out. Which, by the way, I think you boys would like that a lot. Cool. Hyperion. Very good. That's a show no more. You guys would really like it a lot. We'll definitely check them out. We had them on the show a little while back. Everybody really dug the record. Next one, I believe they're from Australia, is the band Ruins.

01:55:45.560 --> 01:56:13.160
I think their last album was called The Place of No... Nah, they have a previous album called The Place of No Petty. That's the one I know. There might be some more in between there. Next up, the new Spiritus Mortis album, The Year Is One. Jay, I'm looking at you here. You should definitely check these guys out. It's vaguely witchcrafty. Okay, I'm in. And finally, my last one, going full on death metal, the new Vader, The Empire. Wow. Is that in the box by any chance? I don't know. It might be. Oh, if not,

01:56:13.240 --> 01:56:13.560
Let me know.

01:56:13.720 --> 01:56:13.800
Okay.

01:56:13.940 --> 01:56:14.300
It's good though.

01:56:14.520 --> 01:56:14.620
Yeah.

01:56:14.760 --> 01:56:15.020
It's cool.

01:56:15.100 --> 01:56:15.460
I like them.

01:56:15.580 --> 01:56:17.440
They just kind of Slayer-esque, you know, so.

01:56:17.800 --> 01:56:18.760
They don't let you down though.

01:56:18.900 --> 01:56:18.980
Yeah.

01:56:19.180 --> 01:56:20.360
They always do the type.

01:56:20.720 --> 01:56:20.800
Yeah.

01:56:21.100 --> 01:56:21.380
All right.

01:56:21.600 --> 01:56:23.440
We're going to move on to personal recommendation.

01:56:24.080 --> 01:56:26.180
Dustin, do you have an album you can recommend to us?

01:56:27.140 --> 01:56:27.720
Yeah, I do.

01:56:28.420 --> 01:56:33.820
And it's a group of local guys from the Twin Cities and their band is called Mayeth.

01:56:34.100 --> 01:56:35.680
That's M-A-E-T-H.

01:56:35.970 --> 01:56:37.260
You can find them on Bandcamp.

01:56:37.410 --> 01:56:37.500
Okay.

01:56:37.660 --> 01:56:42.200
They just put out their, I believe, third full length and it's called Shrouded Mountain.

01:56:43.060 --> 01:57:12.760
And it's just the kind of stuff that, you know, it's music that will give you a head trip without being on any drugs. It's psychedelic. It's doomy. It's progressive. It's post everything. And they have a flute player in the band. And that is quite a cover on this record, too. I think there's a band called Witchwood. Dustin, I hate to be rude. Can you go ahead with that again? What do you mean? Can you mention it? Can you say it again? The album? The band was called Mayeth, and the album is Shrouded Mountain. Okay.

01:57:13.060 --> 01:57:42.920
Thank you, sir. And they're on Bandcamp. They're slinging vinyl. And you can download all their stuff if you want. That sounds from Twin Cities. What kind of music is it? Jazz. Weren't you listening at all? It's metal. It's metal. But it's honestly, you know, some of the songs give you a totally spacey, doobie vibe. Others kind of give you a shamanistic, more tribal vibe. And some are trudging through the desert without any water vibe. Yeah, somebody on here on their Bandcamp page,

01:57:43.060 --> 01:58:13.020
said, crunchy yet creamy at the same time. How do they do it? Yeah. Perfect. Crunchy and fat, doomy and psychedelic. That's what I would define it as. Cool. Sweetness. So yeah, I would recommend them. Excellent. Thank you. We're playing a show with them pretty soon in January. They'll be on the bill with us in Twin Cities. Excellent. If you're in the area, check it out. Zach. I'd actually like to say a second to that album because that's great. Those guys are super loud live too, which is

01:58:13.580 --> 01:58:43.020
But my personal album recommendation is a band called Eight Bells. I believe they're from Portland. The album is called Landless. I've been listening to that a lot lately and it's just fantastic. It is. That's a great album. Alright, John. Mine is from a band everybody knows but I love this album. It's November's Doomed to Pale Hunt Departure. I think if you're going to ever listen to anything by these guys it's their peak album. And they're cool guys. We got a chance to talk with

01:58:43.060 --> 01:59:12.860
Larry at Maryland Death Fest. That was awesome. Apparently they're working on new material. If you're a Doom Death fan, this is definitely a good newer Doom Death. Newer meaning the last decade or so. Not some of the early stuff in the 80s and 90s. All right. Will. My personal recommendation is dehumanize beyond the mind. This is straight up old school United States, Florida. Hair metal? Death metal. No, death metal, man. Although,

01:59:13.900 --> 01:59:43.020
They rock my world. They're nothing but a good time. Yeah. Nothing but a good time. Anyway, to humanize, be on the mind. Check it out. If you like old school Florida death metal, this is your thing. Right on. Jay? Mine is in the honor of Valken. There's a band playing in Valken that I'm super excited about. I don't know how much everybody on the show would like it or not. And bear with me here, Dustin. They're not like Kevlar Talk, but they're sort of the precursor to Kevlar Talk. They're sort of like the precursor to Kevlar Talk in that they're

01:59:43.060 --> 02:00:12.820
They're kind of like throwing a lot of metal influence to some really weird punky party stuff. Anyway, it's a band called Turbo Negro. Yeah, I know them. Okay. And they have a record called Apocalypse Dudes that I would suggest. Absolutely. Yeah, they're playing at Valken this year. I can't wait to see them. Yeah, excited to have the opportunity to see those guys. Sweet. So much fun. I didn't know they were playing. Yeah, I don't know that they're out doing much of anything. I don't hear much anymore. But when they're up on the Valken site, I was like, no way, dude. I couldn't believe it when I saw they were announced.

02:00:12.860 --> 02:00:42.700
because George and I and some others have bought tickets for the show this year. So that's one of my probably my emperor will be playing all of in the night side eclipse. And I would say this is almost tied for me being excited seeing them. So I would highly suggest that that record to our listeners. I think they'd get a kick out of it. Do you ever listen to one of his side projects? Dr. Midnight and the Mercy Cult? No. Good stuff. Yeah. Check it out. I've got all the Turbo Negro records, but I don't have anything else like anything associated. So Duke, you got a suggestion for everybody out there? I do. But, you know, it just struck me.

02:00:42.840 --> 02:01:11.320
that when we were doing new releases this episode and last episode, we did not mention a band that actually for a period of time was the flag bearers for the melodic death scene. And this is a band in flames. They just released a new album called Battles. Just came out. And you look within the course of 10 years from when Come Clarity came out, we're not even mentioning them here on this podcast.

02:01:12.860 --> 02:01:42.000
as a full plate of stuff and a lot of script to fill. Honestly, there were a couple other new releases that I thought about including, and I was like, you know, let's just make this about Metallica. Dark Tranquility also has a new album out, also. I mean, George, did you think about all the different metal releases that you could talk about besides In Flames, like Nickelback? I mean, In Flames, to me, they're barely metal anymore.

02:01:43.200 --> 02:02:12.040
That's the point I brought up. It's that you look for, and that's why I said, for a while, when that Gothenburg scene was really blowing up, they were huge. Yeah, they were running the show. They were it. You look at what they did. Fucking Horacle, Colony, Jester Race, Clayman. Now they've gone on Metallica. Yeah, exactly. They're the Metallica of Sweden. Have you heard the record by any chance, Pete? I have not. I haven't heard it.

02:02:12.200 --> 02:02:41.840
I listened to a couple songs that didn't really do anything for me. But man, I was huge on those guys. But getting back on track. Sorry, go ahead, buddy. How do you like to do Avenged Sevenfold then? Go ahead. Just throw it out there. I can remember the time Zach and I first listened to Take This Life by In Flames. And it was, you know, a life-altering moment. It totally changed our perspective on music. It was one of those.

02:02:41.920 --> 02:03:11.740
one of those bands that got us into metal. Of course. Yeah, but watch out, because the new album might change your perspective right back. Oh, no, no, yeah. I've fallen off the bandwagon with their last one, too, and it's a sad thing. They're a whole different thing now, it's true. But I agree with all you guys. They were a dominant force there for a while. I gotta take a second, because of the mention of Avenged Sevenfold, and I gotta give a shout-out to our listener, Greg, who fucking got me recently. He texted me, actually, no,

02:03:12.120 --> 02:03:41.840
I got a text from an unknown number that said, hey, I have somehow got two copies of the vinyl of the new Avenged Sevenfold. Send me your address and I'll send it to you. But I was like, I don't know this number, but it's like one number off from Greg. And it gives because Greg is up in Canada. So it's very, you know, the numbers are very I'm like, these are familiar. This is almost Greg's number. So I tweeted at him because I know that that's right. Because I had his actual number in my phone. And I was like, dude, did you just, you know, get ahold of me?

02:03:41.920 --> 02:04:11.540
about Avenged Sevenfold. And no, actually, I texted the number on my phone and this person's like, who the fuck are you? And I'm like, what the hell? Because I'd like texted with Greg before. And anyway, so then I tweeted him and was like, hey, was this you? And he was like, yeah, that was me. And I knew that he was fucking with me because I know he's fucking with me. But because I was distracted by the whole like number snafu. You're like, yeah, send it my way. I've been waiting to spin it. Well, I didn't.

02:04:11.700 --> 02:04:12.060
I didn't want to.

02:04:12.060 --> 02:04:12.480
I didn't want to.

02:04:12.600 --> 02:04:15.180
You were distracted by the new Metallica.

02:04:15.280 --> 02:04:16.120
And you're like, oh, yeah.

02:04:16.420 --> 02:04:17.660
Like poppy music.

02:04:18.300 --> 02:04:19.100
I'm into it.

02:04:19.200 --> 02:04:21.840
Like, hey, hey, hey, Greg, send me Nickelback, too.

02:04:22.060 --> 02:04:22.800
That'd be awesome.

02:04:23.040 --> 02:04:24.100
And I sent it.

02:04:24.180 --> 02:04:24.500
I was like.

02:04:24.520 --> 02:04:26.440
While you're at it, do you have any creed on vinyl?

02:04:26.600 --> 02:04:27.440
It's been hard to find.

02:04:28.380 --> 02:04:31.600
And so I was like, you know, I'm almost positive he's messing with me.

02:04:31.740 --> 02:04:33.720
But I didn't want to laugh at him.

02:04:34.380 --> 02:04:36.140
And him being like, dude, I love them.

02:04:36.560 --> 02:04:36.620
Yeah.

02:04:37.020 --> 02:04:38.020
And he was being nice to you.

02:04:38.160 --> 02:04:38.300
Yeah.

02:04:38.360 --> 02:04:38.900
And so I was like.

02:04:39.080 --> 02:04:40.700
And I sent him my address.

02:04:41.020 --> 02:05:09.300
And he was like, dude, I don't listen to that shit. I was like, goddammit, I knew you got me. But I will speak for my best friend. George is such a metal addict that it would be something to boost his numbers by one. Hey, free vinyls, free vinyl. Anyway, so did you do your- So Gregory, if you're out there, thank you for punking George. We love you. Yes, indeed. Thank you, sir. And thanks for giving me your wrong goddamn number.

02:05:11.000 --> 02:05:40.960
All right. So did you say your recommendation? No, I have not said my recommendation. For all my fucking power metal fans out there, I heard this album the other day, you know, rock your fucking socks off right from the start. The last album from Dream Evil, In the Night, the track one, Immortal, Deals of D'Aro, boys. This is what power metal is all about. Fists in the air, group hugs for everybody, loincloths out like you just conquered a small European village. Fucking we are immortal.

02:05:41.120 --> 02:06:09.780
All right. My personal recommendation. I love when we say these albums and anything's on this pod and you know the response is like, okay, yep. Yeah. Well, I'm about to get that myself and you might as well just stop listening to Buk because it ain't even in English. Okay. Thanks. Buk won't listen to anything that's not English. So this one is, it's a dude, but he's from Hungary or at least he originally was. And the band is called Thy Catafalque. So good.

02:06:11.040 --> 02:06:40.500
called Meta. Is that Dustin who just said so, so good? Yeah, Zach and I like them. A little support. You better spell that out, George. Dustin, your new name going for it is Buke. You take the fucking microphone then. I'm not as witty as you are, man. You better spell that, George. You see, George, you're not alone on an island here. That's nice. That's nice for a change. Thanks, guys. You spell that T-H-Y, thy, and then catafalque, and you better be damn sure I looked up that pronunciation.

02:06:40.880 --> 02:07:10.860
C-A-T-A-F-A-L-Q-U-E. George, I've actually listened to it. I know this too, believe it or not. I don't know why I'm looking it up on Spotify. And not on top of that, it's also kind of avant-garde, so you'll never like it. It is. So if anyone wants to expand their horizons a little bit on this podcast, so when you say it could be either from Hungary or Romania, so the Romanian language is the closest

02:07:10.880 --> 02:07:40.720
remaining romance language to actual full-blown Latin. Hungarian, Estonian, and I forget what the other one. They're the only three languages in the Indo-European languages that have no basis whatsoever. You mentioned this on the... Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Finland. Finland, Estonian, and Hungarian. They have no basis with any other romance language, Indo-European language, nothing. It's like they were surrounded by mountains, and they made up their own language, and there's nothing else.

02:07:40.880 --> 02:07:43.020
out there that's remotely connectable.

02:07:43.290 --> 02:07:45.120
Did you read that on the back of a cereal box, Will?

02:07:45.480 --> 02:07:45.780
Yeah, I did.

02:07:45.810 --> 02:07:46.900
It was all Cheerios, dude.

02:07:48.180 --> 02:07:48.660
Actually, I do.

02:07:48.660 --> 02:07:49.820
Hugging nut Cheerios, man.

02:07:50.360 --> 02:07:53.040
You know, I actually know these guys too, George.

02:07:53.150 --> 02:07:57.880
And I wouldn't say it was avant-garde so much as this kind of deadkin dance meets metal a little bit.

02:07:58.100 --> 02:08:01.480
It's a little folky, artsy, folky kind of new agey.

02:08:01.660 --> 02:08:02.160
Yeah, yeah.

02:08:02.400 --> 02:08:02.520
Yeah.

02:08:02.700 --> 02:08:02.940
All right.

02:08:03.320 --> 02:08:07.880
Why don't we move on to our vinyl purchases or vinyl or other purchases.

02:08:08.280 --> 02:08:38.180
So we have to be inclusive for Will who doesn't buy vinyl. But if you picked up some vinyl, let us know. Is Will doing this for anybody else? Yep, he's hung. And I don't mean his screen is frozen. I mean to do that every once in a while in the middle of a podcast just to see if anybody notices. Oh, he like completely dropped out. See if we can get him back. We're closing in here, boys. For those of you who might be tired out there in the Midwest. Yeah, vinyl deep track. We go through that pretty quickly and we're done. Where the hell did Will go? Well, this has been awesome, by the way. If we don't get a chance to say,

02:08:38.280 --> 02:08:40.300
Thank you guys very much for having us.

02:08:40.520 --> 02:08:46.580
You better believe we give you guys a chance to pad our fucking egos, boys.

02:08:48.580 --> 02:08:50.400
You guys have been fucking wonderful.

02:08:50.740 --> 02:08:51.440
Oh, thanks, man.

02:08:51.740 --> 02:08:51.920
Thanks.

02:08:52.720 --> 02:08:54.840
And seriously, thanks for giving music a try, too.

02:08:55.060 --> 02:08:56.080
It means a lot.

02:08:56.360 --> 02:08:57.960
You guys, we listen.

02:08:58.060 --> 02:08:59.000
This computer froze.

02:09:00.480 --> 02:09:07.700
To speak for my co-hosts here, when I say if George, John, Jay, if these, Will,

02:09:07.840 --> 02:09:37.800
If these guys like your shit, they have thousands, and I mean thousands of albums in their collection. We would not bring you on if you guys were shit. And if these guys say they like you guys, I got it. If there was ever a quote to put on a future album release or something, it's quotes from like, George Washburn says, blah, blah, blah, blah, you know? Well, that's awesome, yeah. Why don't we go ahead and start the vinyl, since we can get through

02:09:37.840 --> 02:09:42.220
a couple people maybe he'll be on by then so uh sure let's do our vinyl or other purchases

02:09:55.200 --> 02:10:03.300
and we will start with dustin cool um so just recently i've got a jethro tull minstrel in the gallery on vinyl

02:10:04.180 --> 02:10:33.280
Genesis self-titled album on vinyl. Some black metal that inspired Zach and I a bit. A band called Nikachuin, The Heart of Akamai. Oh, that's a great album. Awesome stuff. And then some Whitesnake greatest hits on CD. Hey, why not? Sabaton's new album on digital download. I do this when people mention them because, well, I have

02:10:33.320 --> 02:10:38.980
be a pretty huge fan but what's your three favorite jethro toll records oh um i know that's

02:10:38.980 --> 02:10:43.360
hard i know because every time you say one there's like four you gotta leave out i gotta give it up for heavy horses

02:10:44.060 --> 02:10:49.300
oh i gotta give it up yeah our last guest did the same thing before he went into songs for the wood he did

02:10:49.340 --> 02:10:54.700
heavy horses but please or maybe it was you george heavy horses is that i know joel yeah go ahead yeah it was

02:10:54.800 --> 02:11:00.900
joel all right dustin go ahead so so heavy horses um really just because i love the song farm on a freeway so

02:11:04.040 --> 02:11:08.960
The Last One's Tough, but I think I've got to go for Minstrel in the Gallery.

02:11:09.280 --> 02:11:13.900
It's a great record. Is that the one with one white duck on the wall and all that on it? Yes, it is.

02:11:14.220 --> 02:11:19.980
There's so many good acoustic songs in there. As much as he's a cool flute player, he's an amazingly good acoustic guitar player.

02:11:20.200 --> 02:11:22.460
Seriously, yeah. And just a great songwriter.

02:11:23.820 --> 02:11:28.020
Minstrel will probably be in my top three, too, for sure. Do you have the expanded version of Heavy Horses?

02:11:28.220 --> 02:11:28.840
Probably not.

02:11:28.960 --> 02:11:58.500
That's got a song called the Broadford Bazaar. It's about a... Oh, I do have that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cool. What about you, Zach? Did you buy anything recently? Yeah. As far as vinyl goes, I think the last vinyl I bought, we were actually playing a show in Madison. I bought the album Four Phantoms by Bellwitch. Was it at their show? George has it. A bunch of us have it. We love it. That was my number one record last year.

02:11:58.960 --> 02:12:28.260
What was it? Did you, um, was it a, you were at a, um, what show? No, um, Utkiaru was playing a show in Madison. Oh, big part. Their drummer just, their drummer died a few months back, by the way. Yeah, yeah, I heard that. That's too bad. Um, yeah. Um, I guess, uh, the only other two vinyl records I bought were that same day, um, both botanist records, if you're familiar with them. Um, three and four. Um, so those are doom and bloom. And, um, I can read what I wrote, man.

02:12:29.000 --> 02:12:30.500
I think it is.

02:12:33.420 --> 02:12:35.440
But yeah, those were the vinyl.

02:12:35.640 --> 02:12:38.260
And then as far as just other new stuff,

02:12:39.400 --> 02:12:42.800
I got the new Stephen Wilson album, Four and a Half.

02:12:43.800 --> 02:12:44.960
You want to get in on this, John?

02:12:45.960 --> 02:12:46.340
That's cool.

02:12:47.980 --> 02:12:48.620
That's a huge fan.

02:12:48.960 --> 02:12:49.080
Yeah.

02:12:49.400 --> 02:12:51.320
No, I have my reasons for saying that.

02:12:51.470 --> 02:12:52.500
I have not listened to it yet.

02:12:52.740 --> 02:12:53.360
Oh, you haven't heard of it yet?

02:12:53.420 --> 02:12:54.000
When did it come out?

02:12:54.640 --> 02:12:55.320
Recent, isn't it?

02:12:55.390 --> 02:12:55.680
I think.

02:12:55.960 --> 02:12:56.020
Yeah.

02:12:58.260 --> 02:13:26.340
I don't know what month it came out, but yeah, it's fairly recent. I actually found it at a used bookstore for $2. Sweet. Oh, nice. Even better. Yeah, I was very surprised. And you're liking it? Yeah, it's really good. I guess it's a bit more almost straightforward than The Raven That Refused to Sing, his previous record. But yeah, very, you know, Porcupine Tree, Stephen Wilson-ish.

02:13:26.400 --> 02:13:56.220
You know, just to marry things up here together, Dustin, are you aware that Stephen Wilson has remastered and remixed a bunch of the Jethro Troll albums? I'm not aware of that at all. John would know the list. They just released Stand Up. And Aqualung is out on vinyl again and stuff. Yeah, he really overdid them. And John says they sound amazing. I don't know. Yeah, Aqualung sounds great. We'll definitely check that out. Will, you came back just in time. Tell us what you might have bought recently. He looks kind of frozen again. Oh, he is there. Yeah, but he's frozen. And anyway, I guess it's John's turn. Or were you done, Zach?

02:13:56.400 --> 02:14:26.180
I apologize. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was done. Yep. So really it's you, John. All right. This will be real quick. These are all, I finally just getting them on vinyl because they've been reissued. So real quick, Death, Sound of Perseverance, finally got a hold of that. That just came out. And then the next five are all from Gojira. It's the first five albums, Terra, Incognita, The Link, The Link Alive, From Mars to Sirius, The Way of All Flesh, Listable Records in France, released all those. So I don't have From Mars to Sirius on vinyl. Yeah, that's, I was only going to get that.

02:14:26.200 --> 02:14:55.320
And I was like, well, wait a minute. I might as well just buy them all. So I did. Yeah, I frequently think that about things. It's like I go to the store and I think I'll just grab a jug of milk. And I'm like, why not buy them all? But if you're going to buy from Lisswell Records, the key is not to buy them all together because the shipping is just insane. It costs more than the album. So you have to break your order up. Yeah, yeah, that's it. All right. So, Will, are you there or not? He asked if he should drop off again. Moving, you there? He's having some trouble. He's just very depressed looking.

02:14:56.800 --> 02:15:26.120
He's morose. We can come back to him. I'll do mine. And then if he can come back anytime and in all of this, whatever, we'll get him done. I bought three albums alone on vinyl this week. I got much along the lines of what I'm listening to. I got Witchcraft Legend, Witchcraft Nucleus, and Pelander Time. That one was just released, so I only expected to get it in the mail on, I think, Monday or Tuesday. Cool. That's it. Will, are you there? Are you muted? Can you hear me? See me? Should I take my clothes off?

02:15:26.220 --> 02:15:56.060
If you want to, hold on, let me get some lotion. Oh, yeah. All right. Sorry. I don't know what happened. Like, my computer froze. I rebooted everything. And so I'm back. Where are you? You're doing your purchases. Oh, shit. Okay, so. I like to. We waited for you and you're like, I have no idea what I bought. No, no, no. I do. I do. I'm sorry. I do. I have my purchases. I just have to go back and I have to bear with me.

02:15:56.220 --> 02:16:26.180
Episode Scripts. Number 56. Well, we thought you were doing the Mannequin Challenge there for a minute. Just like be still. That was awesome. Okay. So, because I skipped on what are we listening to my... So, what am I listening to on my purchases? Yep. Purchases. So, scroll through these real quick. In no particular order, The Sword, Gods of the Earth. I realized when I started

02:16:26.200 --> 02:16:28.140
doing the next,

02:16:28.320 --> 02:16:29.100
the next,

02:16:29.140 --> 02:16:29.520
the second,

02:16:29.740 --> 02:16:31.560
next brew heads column.

02:16:32.139 --> 02:16:32.300
I,

02:16:32.420 --> 02:16:32.719
um,

02:16:32.840 --> 02:16:34.059
I was going to do the ghost eye,

02:16:34.160 --> 02:16:37.559
which is a sword saw sword beer from down Texas.

02:16:37.780 --> 02:16:38.660
And then I realized like,

02:16:38.660 --> 02:16:41.440
I don't have the album gods of the gods of the earth.

02:16:41.660 --> 02:16:42.580
So I bought that.

02:16:42.580 --> 02:16:42.700
Uh,

02:16:43.040 --> 02:16:43.480
Goya.

02:16:44.000 --> 02:16:45.940
If you guys heard Goya,

02:16:46.300 --> 02:16:47.420
great do metal band.

02:16:47.719 --> 02:16:48.780
They had this thing on band cap.

02:16:48.820 --> 02:16:50.639
Like you buy every single one of their albums,

02:16:50.860 --> 02:16:51.160
splits,

02:16:51.660 --> 02:16:51.800
singles,

02:16:52.019 --> 02:16:52.160
whatever,

02:16:52.420 --> 02:16:53.160
like 20 bucks.

02:16:53.260 --> 02:16:53.880
So I bought that.

02:16:54.779 --> 02:16:55.960
G O I A.

02:16:56.059 --> 02:17:26.040
Like Goya. Literally, yeah. Like Goya Foods. And their newest album, it's like a five-song EP slash LP. Doom Planet? Yep, exactly. Doom Planet. I say this almost shamefully, but yet boastfully. I bought the Oakley Doakley. And their album, How Did He Do Lee? What's it like? There's parts of it that are like, yeah, this is awesome. And there's parts of it like, this is dumb. But if you take it with a grain of

02:17:27.399 --> 02:17:28.300
It's pretty good.

02:17:28.599 --> 02:17:29.860
Like, you know, if you like,

02:17:29.860 --> 02:17:30.980
I saw it was out, caught my eye.

02:17:31.240 --> 02:17:31.320
Yeah.

02:17:31.960 --> 02:17:33.639
Will actually texted me that the other day.

02:17:33.780 --> 02:17:34.880
I said something and he said,

02:17:34.980 --> 02:17:35.639
Oakley Doakley.

02:17:35.840 --> 02:17:35.920
Yeah.

02:17:36.580 --> 02:17:37.080
Cause I was now,

02:17:37.130 --> 02:17:37.639
I know why.

02:17:38.660 --> 02:17:38.780
Yeah.

02:17:38.940 --> 02:17:40.420
I was out in California and I,

02:17:40.620 --> 02:17:41.500
I downloaded it.

02:17:41.760 --> 02:17:41.960
Um,

02:17:42.250 --> 02:17:43.360
I mentioned this earlier,

02:17:44.019 --> 02:17:45.559
dehumanized beyond the mind.

02:17:45.790 --> 02:17:45.900
Uh,

02:17:46.179 --> 02:17:50.540
it's great death metal album in the vein of some sort of cross,

02:17:50.679 --> 02:17:51.080
but like,

02:17:51.540 --> 02:17:53.160
what's not really like massacre,

02:17:53.840 --> 02:17:54.099
um,

02:17:54.860 --> 02:17:55.260
dehuman,

02:17:55.469 --> 02:17:55.580
uh,

02:17:55.860 --> 02:18:25.179
Massacre, Cannibal Corpse, and what's the other band? Monstrosity. And then I got the Hardwire 2 Self-Destruct by Metallica. Vorader, Italic Raves. Vorader is a band out of Richmond. Dig These Guys. Harrison Steele was one of the, I think he's either the lead singer or the guitarist in the band. Kind of got to know him a little bit. Great, great stuff. Coagula, Vile Sacrament, I think. Somebody from, one of the fans, which is either,

02:18:25.260 --> 02:18:55.240
Rick out in New Hampshire or Gregory. Somebody sent me this to me. Digging it. Sick of it all. Their EP, When It Smoked Clear, 30th anniversary thing. I mentioned it in the last podcast about they have a song called Black Venom about Donald Trump. Regardless of your political views, it's still sick of it all. It's great. Blood Feast, Chopping Block Blues. Blood Feast, old, old, old school band. And I have this CD somewhere. And when I was trying to look something up, I realized it was a good idea.

02:18:55.280 --> 02:19:25.219
was not in my library. So I bought it again. Uh, Lama gods, new EP. Holy shit. Have any of you listened to this thing? I listened to the Duke song and I was like, wow, he's really going to town with those clean vocals. Yeah. They're going to go, they're going to go full on metal core. Um, no, I'm kidding. Come on. Calm down. No, no, George, you're not wrong. George, you're right on. Yeah, but it's still cool. No, it's not. It's blows. I didn't listen to that much of it. The whole EP or just that?

02:19:25.280 --> 02:19:54.800
One Song. So this is my two cents. If you listen to the song Dukes, there's two original songs. There's two new songs on it and the rest is there's three live songs on it. There's one song Dukes or Duke or the Duke or whatever it is. It is horseshit. It literally, it's not Lamb of God. It's some metalcore horseshit. Oh wait, did you like it, Pukes? What did you think of it? Pukes about to go off on your ass. If you had listened to the new Lamb of God album, Randy has started to incorporate clean vocals.

02:19:55.280 --> 02:20:25.200
Yeah, I've heard that one. And the thing is, this album is to benefit a friend of a band, Medical Fund for Cancer or something like that. You're a dick, Will. So maybe with that said, they were trying to, I think, write a song about him and maybe take a more somber tone. I'm not sure, but maybe that's what I think they may be trying to do here. Jeez. Fair enough. That's a very thoughtful answer, Bill. Okay. I will finish. I will finish. That song, The Duke, is horrid shit. And I don't give a shit.

02:20:25.260 --> 02:20:54.180
If they are trying to make something for charity, it's terrible. Is that the only new song did you say? No, no. However, if you go to the second song, which is The Culling, that sounds like Lamb of God and it's a good song. I bought that one particular song. So if it's somebody trying to recover from some ailment, I'm sorry. I didn't buy the Duke because the song is terrible. I'm going to back Duke up on his theory, though. It seems like a reasonable theory to me that this was since this was for a special cause, they kind of did something that was a little different on purpose.

02:20:57.119 --> 02:20:59.340
It's not necessarily a statement for the future, is all.

02:20:59.640 --> 02:20:59.860
Yeah.

02:21:00.400 --> 02:21:03.480
And I'm actually listening to a sample of it since you started talking about it.

02:21:03.520 --> 02:21:05.160
And I don't like how it sounds very much at all.

02:21:05.180 --> 02:21:05.440
Yeah, it's terrible.

02:21:06.160 --> 02:21:07.880
I'm not saying it sounds good.

02:21:08.500 --> 02:21:11.580
I personally do not like Randy's clean vocals.

02:21:11.980 --> 02:21:12.880
They're better than the fuck.

02:21:12.900 --> 02:21:17.280
I think they add a lot of effects on top of them.

02:21:17.800 --> 02:21:19.800
It sounds digital.

02:21:20.739 --> 02:21:22.200
A lot of his clean vocals.

02:21:22.620 --> 02:21:24.140
I could sum it up like this.

02:21:24.360 --> 02:21:54.340
I know Randy did a lot of, um, it did more clean vocals on their last album. This song, it's not just the vocals. Like he's done clean vocals, but it's still the songs are in the vein of Lamb of God. This sounds like this, this sounds worse than Metallica. The song that Duke. I heard that on the next album, Randy's actually going to use a lot of auto tune, like T-Pain. Yeah. And banjo. They're bringing some banjo in. Sorry. I don't want to belabor the fact. It's a terrible thing.

02:21:54.380 --> 02:22:23.600
But the song, the second song off the EP is actually a good song. Moving on. Horns. H-O-R-N-S-S. So horns, like let me see your horns. The album Telepath. I just picked that up. It's pretty good. And My Buddies in Borracho. Local DC band. Fucking love these guys. They have a new album coming out, Atacama. We previewed this a couple months ago.

02:22:24.360 --> 02:22:54.320
there. We interviewed them. I don't know what happened to the tapes. Buke. They got lost. No, you have it. We need to publish it. We'll talk about that more later. They have a new album coming out out of Kama. It's coming out in December. I previewed it. I pre-ordered it. It's great. Where are we now? Buke? Buke. Purchases. Haven't had money to buy a lot of stuff. Only thing I did was found an old power metal album from an American power metal band Nightmare. That's K-N-E-S.

02:22:54.380 --> 02:23:23.900
N-I-G-H-T-M-A-R-E. Your album, Wolves of Retribution. Classic American power metal from Raleigh, North Carolina. Yeah, it's a good album. I heard that too. Is it like, it's literally an old album or it's just like an old school album? No, it came out January of this, this year. Okay. But with the amount of albums released on Bandcamp, January is pretty old. Yeah. Wednesday is pretty old at this point, dude. Yeah. I've only got three new vinyl purchases. The Metallica, Hardwired to Self-Destruct,

02:23:24.400 --> 02:23:53.940
Triple Mondo, ginormous, sell-a-kidney version. And then I also got In the Woods Pure and Death Spell Omega, the Synergy of Molten Bones. George, you want that kidney back, or are you cool with selling that kidney? He's not going to let it go, dude. He wants you to justify your work for their work group. I still got one. I'll be all right. Maybe the Goldbladder. Was it indeed actually kind of pricey? Yes, with shipping and everything, it was like $80.

02:23:54.380 --> 02:24:24.180
Oh shit. Was there anything fun in the package? Three vinyls and some like eight buttons, a CD. Okay. And a fancy cover. And a shitload of bad music. Yeah. And like a bunch of like pictures, like the square record sized, what do they call them? Cutouts. There's a name for it. Lithograph or something like that. Yeah. Was there a bottle just for men in there? Like, Hey, Hey, be like us and color your hair. I think,

02:24:24.360 --> 02:24:25.700
Kirk stopped using it.

02:24:26.660 --> 02:24:27.960
Oh, did you see his new videos?

02:24:28.220 --> 02:24:31.580
I mean, it's like full on curly gray locks.

02:24:32.020 --> 02:24:32.160
Yeah.

02:24:32.800 --> 02:24:35.780
Except for that even that can't be real since he was almost bald a few years ago.

02:24:37.900 --> 02:24:39.620
So he got a gray, he got gray implants.

02:24:40.140 --> 02:24:40.540
Classy.

02:24:41.340 --> 02:24:41.600
All right.

02:24:41.740 --> 02:24:44.840
We're moving into the final stretch here with our deep tracks.

02:24:45.360 --> 02:24:45.620
Dustin.

02:24:45.940 --> 02:24:46.140
All right.

02:24:46.160 --> 02:24:49.640
A deep track and kind of a tribute to the theme.

02:24:49.940 --> 02:24:52.180
One of my favorite bands of all time is Blue Oyster Cult.

02:24:52.720 --> 02:25:21.540
And of course Metallica covered Blue Oyster Cult's Astronomy. However, I think the original, I think it's 1974 version of Astronomy, Off Secret Treaties by Blue Oyster Cult, remains one of my favorite songs of all time. For people who know the band, it's not a deep cut, but for people who only know Don't Fear the Rebirth and Burn It Burn for You, it's worth listening to just for how creepy yet soothing it is. Dude, I'm going to do it just because you told me to. That's just the kind of recommendation I like.

02:25:22.080 --> 02:25:51.940
It continues to be inspiring. Guitar work and the tone of the song in general. Awesome. Zach. Zach. I actually also have a Blue Oyster Cult song, which I honestly thought this was going to be Dustin's, so I was a little worried, but the song Perfect Water off of their album Club Ninja is just a jam for me and for Dustin. I know. You've listened to that song thousands of times, probably. Rad, dude. Love it.

02:25:52.080 --> 02:26:22.060
Man, two Blue Airster Cult songs in a row. I'm loving this. Bringing some class to the show. Yes, and classing the joint up. My song is from Catatonia off of Tonight's Decision, In Death, a song. Ooh, nice. Nice. Excellent. Willem. For me, there's a band called Blood Feast, East Coast 19. Heard of them somewhere recently. Yeah. They've been described as the East Coast version

02:26:22.100 --> 02:26:51.180
of Slayer back in the day, 80s, 90s. I think their second album out called Chopping Block Blues. And the last song on the album is called Remnant. And it is badass. And I think they've come around and they're coming to play in D.C. Either they just were and they're coming back again. I had that record in the 80s, Will. I don't have it now, but it was called Kill for Pleasure. Yeah, that's the third album maybe.

02:26:52.080 --> 02:27:21.960
It's the first one. Yeah, but you're the same band. Absolutely. Some random purchase I made in the 80s just like sight unseen. Well, you know saw it on this. Yeah, cool album cover. Let me buy this. Yeah. So anyway, Blood Feast off the album Chopping Black Blues last song on the album Remnant. It's awesome. Cool. I would like to dedicate mine to John this week and it is off of Sabbath quality Sabbath and it's a song called Who Are You? I just heard that on the radio. Yeah, right. It's a great song. Good man. Might have been somebody else's deep one a while back, but Ozzy actually wrote that.

02:27:22.100 --> 02:27:52.040
He wrote that keyboard part, which is not that real hard. It doesn't surprise me. Who are you? The fuck am I? But I mean, it's a very easy... So it's like Ozzy was a great musician, but it's a great song. Which is funny, Jay, because Rick Wakeman's the keyboardist on that album. No. Is that true? Yes. Get the best if you're going to play the easiest, I guess. I'm going to go ahead and say it. He actually recorded that part while he was working on a part for another album.

02:27:53.600 --> 02:27:56.200
I'm going to go ahead and say he abdicated that one over to Ozzy.

02:27:57.620 --> 02:28:01.840
I was just like, dude, I mean, like you could literally teach a cat to play that room.

02:28:02.140 --> 02:28:03.920
That would be awesome if they brought Wakeman in for it, though.

02:28:04.840 --> 02:28:06.400
We need John Lord coming here now.

02:28:08.100 --> 02:28:09.060
You got a deep track?

02:28:09.480 --> 02:28:09.620
No.

02:28:10.220 --> 02:28:10.540
Okay, then.

02:28:10.720 --> 02:28:12.080
I can't lie.

02:28:12.400 --> 02:28:13.240
I can't lie.

02:28:13.400 --> 02:28:15.420
I'm not going to make one up on the fly.

02:28:16.120 --> 02:28:19.200
Life has been a little busy for me, so I'm sorry.

02:28:19.260 --> 02:28:20.240
I do not have one, gentlemen.

02:28:20.540 --> 02:28:21.040
We'll give you a pass.

02:28:21.160 --> 02:28:50.680
I need to say. And I got to say, this is, I think, a first on the podcast that we had a repeat on a deep track. I mean, deep tracks are deep. Okay. So it's pretty special when one of you out there has the same song as me. Who could it be? That's men at work. Who could it be now? Well, in the spirit of the Metallica-centric episode, he knows it. Astronomy. Oh, right on. Well done. So technically three blue oyster cults in one sitting. That's something.

02:28:52.139 --> 02:29:20.640
They're underrated today because of Don't Fear the Reaper. Dustin was pumping his fist. I just about swallowed my tongue when you said that. I was like, don't say anything. You swallowed the reload? What? Twice. I don't know what the fuck that was supposed to mean. With the word reload, I worked fine. Load, reload. Twice, yeah. So yeah, that's pretty awesome. Cool. Let's wrap this up. What's that? Let's wrap this up. Yes, we are finally at the end. We got it. Jays.

02:29:20.720 --> 02:29:49.360
7.30. Oh my god, I was a dog. Fuck you, Jay. He's ready for dinner. Three hours of hair behind us. I'm actually pretty hungry. Zach, seriously, thank you guys for coming on. We appreciate it. It was our pleasure. But still, go out and buy their album, The Plight of Wanderers. Thanks for having us, and you guys keep spreading the heavy metal faith. We will do. Always. Do you want to fetch or anything that you guys want to throw out there while you've got a minute? As in, go buy this, go see this?

02:29:50.740 --> 02:30:20.420
If you're in the Twin Cities and you're listening, we're playing January 7th at the Triple Rock. Other than that, you know, metal needs your money more than ever. So. Hell yeah. All right. Before we go, we want to, as usual, mention that you can check us out on SoundCloud. We're on Facebook. We're on Twitter. I am at Disciple OV Metal. What else? Muted. You're muted, but I'll say it for you. Buke is at Opeth fan. You know, I try and be proper and mute.

02:30:20.480 --> 02:30:50.440
the mic to not hear my background noise. I see. Go ahead and do it now, dude. I am on Twitter at Opethfan. Jay, now you're muted. I was fucking on the day. I am at CatatonicJay. This is Will, and I'm at BrewMetalWill. This is John, and I'm at WhiteCluster69. And at any time, we have some great listeners. If you want to send us albums to check out, bands, send us anything. 02:30:50.480 --> 02:31:14.300
