00:00:29.060 --> 00:00:30.160
You must listen.

00:00:31.540 --> 00:00:32.540
You must listen.

00:00:36.399 --> 00:00:40.500
Now, here is the podcast, Metalheads Podcast Go.

00:00:40.860 --> 00:00:42.500
Hello, and welcome to the Metalheads Podcast.

00:00:42.750 --> 00:00:43.460
My name is George.

00:00:43.840 --> 00:00:44.360
This is Jay.

00:00:44.860 --> 00:00:45.260
This is Will.

00:00:45.760 --> 00:00:46.380
And this is John.

00:00:46.740 --> 00:00:48.340
And welcome to 2018.

00:00:49.020 --> 00:00:51.140
This is episode 70, our first of the year.

00:00:51.440 --> 00:00:55.320
Normally, I end up dragging my feet until about mid-February

00:00:55.320 --> 00:01:21.260
because I'm so burned out after our year-end list. And I wanted to avoid that this year. So pretty much shortly after posting our year-end episode, I got with the guys, still in December even, and said, hey, let's plan something for early January. Yeah, I was a little shocked by that. Yeah, me too. Let's light this candle. I'm kind of hoping we can even get another one in before the end of the month. So we'll see. Whoa, whoa, whoa. No crazy talk. Don't want to overachieve here.

00:01:25.340 --> 00:01:55.300
about lately, other than music, is the new Star Wars movie that came out in December. And John finally just saw it, so now we can all talk about it. And we figured we'd nerd out a little bit on that before we get into music. So... Let's quickly go around and just, in one sentence, your overall impression. Everybody, go, George. I liked it. I've seen it twice. The first time I saw it, I liked it, but I was...

00:01:55.320 --> 00:02:25.060
I was less impressed with the first half of the movie because I kept waiting. Because I didn't know what was coming. That's more than one sentence, by the way. Sorry. I was anticipating things and wondering where things were going and couldn't really enjoy it because of the anxiety. But then the end of the movie was awesome, I thought. And then the second time through, I loved it front to back. Even the parts that people are complaining about were fine with me because in the end, it all leads to something.

00:02:25.780 --> 00:02:55.140
And it's Star Wars. Well, I liked it a lot. I thought there's a couple of iconic scenes in it that are still kind of hanging in my mind. So that's nice that they were able to add to that. You know, like the scenes, the major scenes in the whole, the whole of the trilogy that kind of stay in your head. The one thing I would say is I just felt like the whole casino bit was just unnecessary and made for a few extra more minutes than I really needed. Are we going spoiler free or are we going to just spoiler?

00:02:55.340 --> 00:03:01.320
All over but he's facing that just spoil it I mean if you haven't seen it by now yeah yeah so you've been warned

00:03:02.220 --> 00:03:07.780
a little bit if you if you don't know that um well let's be honest half the people who tune in to this

00:03:07.970 --> 00:03:13.400
podcast are gonna fast forward to this yeah I saw it twice a lot of my metal friends are star wars fans

00:03:13.450 --> 00:03:20.040
people will be listening I think um I saw it twice the first time I left the theater thinking that it was

00:03:20.040 --> 00:03:49.380
a cool movie with some epically dumb parts. But that's Star Wars for you. Yeah. And, yeah, I mean, you know, Ewoks and Jar Jar Binks. The second time I saw it, I liked it more, but because I was kind of like what George said, I didn't. I was more relaxed. I already saw it. So I'm kind of looking, picking up some more details and stuff. So some of the things I thought were potholes weren't, but there's some still some really epically stupid parts in it. Yeah. And I just saw it last night, finally.

00:03:49.540 --> 00:04:19.320
And I went in just real quick thinking, oh, God, I've heard and seen so many different rumors on Facebook because, you know, everyone's got to say they saw it and tell their story about it. So I thought I was going to ruin it. And actually, it wasn't ruined at all because most people were either dicking around or whatever. But I thought it was pretty good. I need to see it a second time. I have some issues with a few things, but I'm not going crazy and on the hate side for the film like some people are. Actually, quick question.

00:04:19.540 --> 00:04:48.160
Since everyone's seen that, how the hell did Rey get off the Star Destroyer? Just say that part. How the hell did Rey get off? She stole the Emperor's ship, I think it was. Yeah, but I don't think they really even explained that. He said that when the little British bitchy guy that Snoop mopped the floor with. When Kylo Ren woke up, he was like, she took the Emperor's ship or something. Oh, okay.

00:04:49.560 --> 00:05:19.320
I saw I missed that. Or the Emperor's Shuttle or something. Yeah. Okay. So what I want to know is, John, did you see this last night because you were like, oh shit, I need to go because we're supposed to talk about it on the podcast? That was part of it. But the other part too was, as I told you guys, I was planning on seeing it after Christmas. Yeah. And I had been dealing with just the nastiest cold for about a week and a half. And I think yesterday was probably the first day I could have safely gone without being that dude in the corner coughing the whole time. Yeah. You know, where you're sitting there thinking, hey,

00:05:19.540 --> 00:05:49.500
Couldn't you've gone to the matinee? So, it was the first time I felt like going in. Jen wanted to go and she doesn't want me. She didn't want me to go without her because she really wanted to go as well. It was the perfect time that worked out for us. So, I have one I'm going to raise. And I'm glad you're feeling better, John. I have one I'm going to raise. Thank you. One issue, which was when they're at the casino and they break out of jail and then it goes into like this. I wouldn't say it's an all alert, you know, all high red alert to get them back.

00:05:49.940 --> 00:06:19.500
But the thing that kind of did bother me was they broke out of jail, but they were in jail for, like, illegally parking. And then the whole place goes into lockdown to try to catch these two scofflaws out of, you know what I mean? I was thinking. Hey, Jay, can I take that one step further? So that happens, and yet they don't tow their car. It's still on the beach. Oh, they were illegally parked on the beach, but let's just leave it there because it's not, you know, an eyesore to the gazillion dollars that are in.

00:06:19.560 --> 00:06:48.880
here at the casino. That's a really good point. I literally was like, I'm having trouble buying this chase right now because a couple of, you know, bad parts got loose. The one thing that worried me going into it, seeing the previews and people talking about it, were the Porgs. We're like, oh no, it's going to be Ewoks or it's going to be Jar Jar. But they really weren't part of it. It was just, and to be perfectly honest, I thought they were hilarious because of the whole Chewbacca's eaten one.

00:06:49.100 --> 00:07:17.280
And he gets all guilty and suddenly he's like taking care of them. Did you guys notice that, you know, they kept having the one pop up when they were doing the one chase scene and he kept popping up and when he would just scream in the screen, you know, his eyes would be big. And finally, Chewbacca was like, I've done with this. He just smacks the crap out of him into the side. Yeah. I actually ended up coming away thinking they were pretty funny. And that was if you're going to add a kid thing to it, that's obviously a marketing thing there that they're going to sell a gazillion of those to young kids.

00:07:17.380 --> 00:07:47.080
And it doesn't interrupt the story, really. It's comic relief, in fact. Yeah. My thing with the last five movies, not Rogue One, I'm not including that, is that it doesn't have the space opera feel of the first three releases. You know, where when they were trying to be funny, it actually came off funny. And some of the scenes, I think, are forced to be funny. The Chewbacca scene where he's getting ready to eat one is actually funny, I thought. Because he's like, oh, come on, really? I want to know if he's a vegetarian now.

00:07:47.360 --> 00:08:17.040
Like if, you know, because he's always, you know, thinking with your stomach again. And, you know, he's always going after the meat. And now he's like looking at them and looking at the spit with the cooked one on there and, you know, feeling guilty. I'm like, is he just not going to eat them or is he going to still eat meat or not? I mean, that would be kind of funny to have a vegetarian Chewbacca. By the way, another funny thing about him. I don't know if anyone's noticed this over the course of all these movies. How does everyone understand Wookie? Yeah. It's like the, the,

00:08:17.820 --> 00:08:18.560
of the galaxy.

00:08:19.920 --> 00:08:21.580
You know, a lot of people know it.

00:08:21.700 --> 00:08:22.260
Some people don't.

00:08:23.560 --> 00:08:26.420
Which reminds me, there was one key point in that

00:08:27.419 --> 00:08:30.320
where he passes along a message or says something to Ray,

00:08:30.580 --> 00:08:33.360
and she's like, yeah, that's a good reason, or something like that.

00:08:33.400 --> 00:08:36.400
She answers, and I don't think they ever told us what he had said.

00:08:36.520 --> 00:08:38.140
I kind of thought we were going to learn later.

00:08:38.560 --> 00:08:39.180
You know what I'm talking about?

00:08:39.380 --> 00:08:40.880
It's kind of the same thing with droids, too.

00:08:40.979 --> 00:08:43.060
Everybody knows what the, you know, oh, yeah, shut up, R2.

00:08:43.240 --> 00:08:45.460
And, you know, they know how to speak droid.

00:08:45.580 --> 00:09:14.760
Same thing with Rey and BB-8 when she meets him in the desert. She knows what he's saying. But there was some poignant point. There's a point in the movie when a poignant message is given to... Well, I've only seen it once. And I remember thinking, oh, we'll learn what they said later in the movie, and we didn't. I was disappointed there wasn't more Chewbacca in the movie. Yeah, that's what I was going to say. I think they did a good job in Episode 7 making Chewbacca kind of more of a badass. And I was kind of hoping for a lot more Chewbacca.

00:09:14.780 --> 00:09:44.160
And you know Peter Mayhew was not Chewbacca in this. I saw him in the credit. He was Chewbacca consultant. Does he have, I wonder if, because I think he probably has issues of mobility at this point. Yes. Yeah. Hey, so did you guys catch if, if and when they said I have a bad feeling about this? Yes. And I know people were complaining about it. It's at the very beginning of the movie. Yeah.

00:09:44.760 --> 00:10:14.740
when Poe and BB-8 are flying to the Dreadnought. And Poe's... or BB-8 says something, you know, and Poe's like, you know, oh, be more positive. Happy beeps. Yeah. So just a couple of things, by the way. I thought the Dreadnought was killer. I like it when they introduce some new big thing and it's just so like, wow. And honestly, the scene where the sound goes out, I thought it was just so effective. I was just going to say that. That is the most... Yeah. You know, I didn't...

00:10:14.840 --> 00:10:43.180
feel all that special about Admiral Holdo, was it? Yeah. But that scene was so fucking cool. Yeah. And apparently there were movie theaters putting up signs going into the movie saying, there's a part of the movie where the sound goes out, it's not a glitch. Because people were complaining. And I'm like, the whole theater would go quiet. And it was just awesome. How you couldn't get that? I don't understand that, how you couldn't get that.

00:10:43.260 --> 00:11:13.240
because when that how you would have thought there was a glitch here because it was so much more effective with that sound out it was bizarre i mean that was goosebumps you know one other thing that it's fine it just it doesn't matter to me that it's hanging in the air but it was another thing i just sort of thought they were setting this up to explain which is when kylo ren comes in to talk to snoke and hux is that his name well yeah oh yeah he's walking out and and the um and snoke is sort of like yeah okay that's good that

00:11:13.260 --> 00:11:42.380
you managed to come up with this way to track them. And I thought they were going to explain the way that he did that. But you know what I mean? Like you just caught the end of the conversation. We have them on a string. To the point where I thought Laura Dern was a traitor until she. Right. I thought there's got to be a bad apple here. Or, you know. Well, apparently in Rogue One, when Jyn Erso and Kazian are at the archives and they mention hyperspace tracking as one of the programs they were looking at. So.

00:11:43.260 --> 00:12:13.060
It's a Rogue One tie. Nice. Yeah. So they've been working on it for like, what, 30, 40 years? Yeah, so I finally got it nailed. Well, I, you know, just to throw this out too, I still, I still think one of the best post-2000 movies, and I liked it better than this one, was Rogue One. I just love Rogue One. I did too. I was with my son the other day. My issue, one of my issues with timelines and stuff is the whole Benicio Del Toro character, how he stabbed him in the back.

00:12:13.260 --> 00:12:42.860
When did he have time to do that, by the way? I mean... Well, okay, I was questioning that the first time, too. And I picked up on it more the second time that he did it after they were captured. Basically, he was like, you know, hey, we did it, we got caught. And so after they got caught, he turned over on them. Yeah, it just... And I figured out there was a point when he did it, it just came off so quickly. They didn't get caught because of him. They got caught because of the evil BB-8 guy.

00:12:43.920 --> 00:12:47.040
But then, after they got caught, he rolled over on them.

00:12:47.880 --> 00:13:03.800
So here's the thing. The other question is, people are asking, how did he know that the ships had done what they were doing and were on the way down to the planet? Because he sold them out. But I think, I explained that one to myself, because he used the same technology for them to get in as they did for them to get out.

00:13:03.800 --> 00:13:12.660
Yeah, some sort of cloaking technology that the resistance was using, and so he cracked the code with them.

00:13:14.779 --> 00:13:42.680
So should we keep going or should we let people talk about metal now? Yeah, let's talk about metal. Because we can do this all day. We can do a side podcast. It's just nice that it's out there and we got one to talk about. Yeah, let's move on. All right. So we don't have a guest this time. It's a little early in the year to maybe try getting a hold of people due to the holidays and such. So I suggested we do another roundtable episode. And this one revolving around

00:13:42.740 --> 00:14:11.840
our favorite or most memorable concerts. And this morning I had the idea that we should probably lead into that with everybody talking a little bit about their first concert, what that was. Because generally that's going to be one of the most memorable, whether it was awful or awesome or whatever. Shoo, do we want to use our usual order in which case we would start with John? Sure, I'll go first. Because I probably saw the first concert of us. Yes, that's true. I bet you did.

00:14:11.860 --> 00:14:41.820
Now, this would be the first one that I went to without my parents. Because my parents had taken me a couple times to see the Beach Boys. Which, by the way, I think is now kind of cool that I'm older that I got to see them. Hell yeah. But the first time I ever went to a show by myself, it was just my friend Alex Mason. You know, it's one of those things where you remember every detail, even though it's now three decades later. We went and saw Sammy Hagar at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California, which is like a block away from San Francisco.

00:14:43.000 --> 00:15:11.160
No parents. Nobody. We were 13 years old. That would never happen today. Will, you would never let your kids go to a concert on their own in a big, massive venue at 13, would you? No. I would let them go to, like, Atlas because everybody knows me, and they know if anyone screws my kids, I would kill them. Right. But you wouldn't say, oh, yeah, you guys can go down to the Verizon Center on your own. Oh, yeah. Sure. No, absolutely not. Yeah. We got dropped off, and we were told, if you're not back, don't plan on coming home. Yeah.

00:15:12.640 --> 00:15:41.460
That was enough to scare us. But yeah, it was on his Standing Hampton tour. And if you don't know anything about Sammy Hagar, you might know he does two songs off that album, where Heavy Metal and One Way to Rock, which was the big songs that he played from that tour. But yeah, just very first one. And we were the cool kids for that one week at school that we got to go see a concert nobody else had got to go to. And it was a lot of fun. I still remember where we sat.

00:15:44.260 --> 00:16:11.540
I still remember Hagar doing pull-ups off the scaffolding with the lights and everything. It was very cool. It wasn't a metal show, but it was pretty damn heavy despite some of the cheesy shit he played. Yeah, close enough for the era. And he's a Bay Area guy, so it was a rocking show. 15,000 people going crazy. I think he did three or four nights in a row at the Cow Palace and we got to see one of them. It was very cool. Nice.

00:16:11.880 --> 00:16:41.720
So, Will? My very first concert that I can remember was 1988, Spectrum Philadelphia, Anthrax, and Ozzy Osbourne. Ah, I saw that tour. That would have been a studio for you for Anthrax, yeah? Yep. And I went with my dad. Nice. Ozzy was... Ultimate Sin? No, no rest. It was No Rest for the Wicked. Oh, that's right. Sorry,

00:16:41.880 --> 00:17:11.839
I was in college then so you're right it was no rest for the wicked shit and ultimate sin would have been master of puppets so you know right you wouldn't remember that no and no rest for the wicked still one of my favorite Ozzy albums yeah yeah my dad took me so sweet that's cool my dad took me to a lot of my early concerts uh and he was a good sport I mean he he got me into he's always in the like classic rock Pink Floyd Zeppelin all that stuff so I probably gravitated more toward metal because of him

00:17:11.860 --> 00:17:41.780
And he was not into metal per se, but he was always a good sport and would take me to a lot of shows and a lot of great stories with my dad. He gave me stuff. Excellent. Mine was, and I'm looking at the actual date here online, believe it or not, and it was December 4th, 1984, and it was Kiss on the Animal Eyes tour. A friend of mine's mom took us, and we had to drive four hours to get to St. Louis to see it at the Keele Auditorium. And Queensryche was opening and was the warning, was out.

00:17:41.880 --> 00:18:11.840
I was into that record so it was cool that I was into both bands and the only thing I can really say about it is that it was kind of a let down for me because until that point the best thing I'd seen was you know Don Kirchner's rock hour or whatever it was things like that or whatever those what that was called the King Blisket flower hour and all that and so not only did they not have their makeup on anymore and I knew that they were not going to of course because I was into them but that was just like oh they're real people you know what I mean like I'd never seen them move consistently for like an hour or two hours I just because there was limited things available

00:18:12.260 --> 00:18:41.800
I walked away having thought it was the greatest night of my life, but also just a little bit heartbroken because I was like, oh, they just, I don't know. I thought they were like exploding things through the whole show. You know what I mean? And that's not what it was at all, but it was great. It was great. You know, Jay, you just mentioned something that a lot of people who aren't our age don't know. The King Biscuit Flower Hour was just the coolest thing, man, when we were growing up. Yeah, I don't have them anymore, but until a few years ago, I had some cassettes of bands that I liked that ended up being on.

00:18:41.880 --> 00:18:44.060
there that I would record late at night on a Saturday night or something.

00:18:44.400 --> 00:18:48.980
So, you know, some bands have actually released those those shows on CD at some point.

00:18:49.420 --> 00:18:54.220
Like, I think Triumph has actually released one or two of them, you know, and there's a few out there.

00:18:54.560 --> 00:18:55.720
It just depends who the band is.

00:18:56.420 --> 00:18:59.820
And I do remember Triumph King Biscuit Flower Hour, by the way.

00:18:59.820 --> 00:19:03.800
I heard it called at least one show, and it might have been the Allied Forces tour.

00:19:04.240 --> 00:19:07.800
There was that, and then there was Night Flight that was on TV at night.

00:19:07.880 --> 00:19:08.960
I don't know if you guys ever remember that.

00:19:09.580 --> 00:19:37.960
So they used to show like live concerts and stuff like that. And they'd have all kinds. It changed after a year or two, but it was pretty cool for a while. Awesome. Cool. George. My first concert was me and a couple of my friends and my friend's mom. It was at the Chrysler Arena. That's the British version. Chrysler Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan. And it was David Lee Roth and Tesla. It was the Edom and Smile Tour. So it was probably around 86.

00:19:39.600 --> 00:20:09.560
And is that the album has Yankee Rose on it? Yep. Yeah. So we had Steve Vai there, which is cool. Oh, that's awesome. Yeah. And Yankee Rose is on Skyscraper, I think. No, no, you're right. Don't mess with my David Lee Roth, boy. And, you know, the one thing that I took away from that, other than the side of David Lee Roth using

00:20:09.580 --> 00:20:39.560
and a giant inflatable microphone as a phallic symbol and hopping around the stage like a cowboy was how incredibly loud it was you know up until that point sure i listened to my music loud but i had not experienced loud before and i would i just remember like our ears ringing and just being like oh my god that was so freaking loud but it would still be years before i wore earplugs yeah i actually i forgot that part of my experience in that two things one was some of the opening riffs on some of the kiss songs it was so loud i was

00:20:39.580 --> 00:21:09.460
I'm not sure what this is just yet. And I mean, and I knew every kiss song backwards and forward. And the second, I swear to God that night when I went to bed, a big blob of earwax fell out of my ear because it was like I'd been shook loose. Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, I always seem like, oh, my first show was David Lee Roth. But my second show was Megadeth, Warlock and Sanctuary. So, you know, I make up for it. All right. Now, we don't have to go in any kind of order for the rest of this, but just like throw out.

00:21:09.620 --> 00:21:39.560
that you really liked. Somebody. Anybody. Or I could do it. One that I really have a lot of fond memories of was the first time I saw Manowar. We drove for, I don't know, four or five hours to Cleveland from Michigan to this teeny little, like, biker bar called The Machine. And seeing Manowar was kind of difficult back then because

00:21:39.600 --> 00:22:09.120
They didn't even come to Michigan. Cleveland was as close as they got. And when they did play, they tended to be in Europe. And so they were one of those mythic bands for me and my group of friends. Aren't they from New York? Yeah. And so it was like there was so much anticipation and build up to go into this show. And we got there in the middle of the day, or late afternoon anyway. And it wasn't going to open for a couple more hours.

00:22:10.340 --> 00:22:37.400
And it turned out that A, the band was already there. And B, they were shooting a video for Return of the Warlord. And so we got to be in the video. And we were just, a few hours beforehand, it was just a bar, so you could just walk in and, you know, whatever. And we ran into Eric Adams. And he was really cool and just, like, talked to us for, like, 20 minutes or so.

00:22:39.600 --> 00:23:09.420
Got his autograph. And, you know, just solidified my love for Manowar. And then they did this thing out front where they all went down the street and got on their motorcycles. And we all lined the street. And they would, like, drive by and we'd all cheer and stuff. And, you know, they'd shoot it for the video. What year is this? That had to be... Late 90s. I would say 96, 95, 96 maybe. Okay. There's, you know,

00:23:09.600 --> 00:23:39.460
There's a hell. Have you seen any of those hell on earth videos that they've done? Oh yeah. I'm looking at them right now. They talk in great detail of that whole, they talk about that behind the scenes kind of thing of making that. Yeah. If you go in the video and like frame by frame it, you can see us. Okay, cool. And it was like a week or two after I cut my hair. I was so pissed. But. I'll throw one out and it was a big damn deal for me and it was because I did live in the middle of nowhere in Missouri and then when we moved to Arizona,

00:23:39.600 --> 00:24:08.680
was my senior year of high school and suddenly I had access to regular shows. And at that time from Shona Mercy up until around this time I was a Slayer fanatic and then they came to town in the South of Heaven tour and it was in the summer and I just went, I literally went and waited down at the club from like noon. And the bus pulled up and Dave Lombardo, I met Dave Lombardo, he was going out to get something to eat for lunch because Kerry King still had hair and I sat there.

00:24:08.740 --> 00:24:38.660
I have. Somewhere I have photographs. I've seen it. I have these Kodak disc camera photos. I would love to get another picture with them now because I was just this goofy kid with long hair. But it was such a kind of like. You got to send us that photo. Yeah. I got to find it. But it was like me and. But for me at that time, that was so huge. And, you know, I was 18 years old and I'll never forget it. I'll never forget it was just like, finally, I'm going to see Slayer. And it just blew my mind. You know, they were great.

00:24:38.720 --> 00:25:06.840
They did a bunch of my favorite songs and stuff. It was awesome. I didn't see them until Divine Intervention. But I went to, I want to say it was Kalamazoo, Michigan, to see them play. It was like Slayer, Biohazard, and probably somebody else, but I don't remember who it was. And that was just an insane show. I remember I went with my friend Noble and Sammy, and Noble and I got, you know, up into the shit.

00:25:08.720 --> 00:25:38.020
in the back. And when the show was over, we found her in the back crying because she thought we were just going to be like mangled. Because it was so violent up there. And it was kind of funny. Mine's also a Slayer show. And I will never forget this show. It was September 6th or 9th, 1990, Trocadero Philadelphia. And they did that short. I've talked about this before, but they did that short Week in the Abyss tour when they released Seasons in the Abyss.

00:25:38.060 --> 00:26:05.320
Right before they released Season of Biscuits, I think that came out in October, a month later. And Atrocodera is a, it's kind of like the 930 Club in D.C., but probably a little smaller. It's an old Chinese theater. And so for Slayer and their prime to play this smaller theater, I mean, it was insane. It was sold out. The energy in that place, I mean, they were ripping the doors off and passing the doors. Like, you know, people crowd surfed. They were, doors were surfing above the crowd.

00:26:05.680 --> 00:26:34.380
And like almost presenting them to the band as sacrifices. I mean, it was very cool. I've just never seen a frenzied audience like that before in my life. And what's crazy is it was so memorable for Slayer playing. I almost don't remember who opened, but it may have been. Suicile Tendencies and Testament and that or that may have been another show, but there was another show at the Trocadera was like Suicile Tendencies came out and they just like the first like 20 minutes of that show.

00:26:34.500 --> 00:26:35.480
They played

00:26:43.320 --> 00:26:44.080
Can't Bring Me Down

00:26:44.820 --> 00:26:46.980
off Lights Camera Revolution, which is a great song.

00:26:47.640 --> 00:26:51.380
They played, I think, Possessed to Skate.

00:26:52.600 --> 00:26:54.320
They played How I Laugh Tomorrow

00:26:55.180 --> 00:26:56.940
and some other one. Oh, Trip at the Brain

00:26:57.540 --> 00:27:00.320
was another one. And it was like these four songs right in a row.

00:27:00.460 --> 00:27:02.880
And it was probably the most exhausting 20 minutes of my life.

00:27:04.960 --> 00:27:33.200
The only time I've seen things ripped apart before was when I saw Cannibal Corpse at Jack's. And they broke the barrier. And it was like bars with a thing on top of it. And the crowd was so wild that they had ripped the top of it off. And they had to stop the show because they were worried people were going to impale themselves on these spikes now. So they literally stopped the show so that they could come and repair it.

00:27:35.200 --> 00:28:04.160
How about you, John? I have such a long list here. I don't even know what to choose. We'll pick one up, but then I think we should all just kind of run through a list, too, because I've got a bunch written down. I don't have to say a lot about it. So, yeah, okay. So, I'll give a show that stands out the most, then I'll give you my list after that. So, probably one of the shows that stands out, and it's not necessarily a metal show, but it's the first time I saw Rush was in 86, and that was then a 30-plus year thing that, you know,

00:28:04.200 --> 00:28:32.880
I went every time they came to town multiple times, you know, just to see them after I hated them for the first couple of years that I was into music. And then all of a sudden the light switch went on. You're like, oh, man, I'm going to get dragged in and I'm never coming back from this. But what made the show so special is I was supposed to go with a couple of friends of mine and my cousin was going with a couple of friends of his. And my cousin got busted drinking at the beach like a week before the show.

00:28:33.520 --> 00:29:03.460
And so his mom wouldn't let him go to the show. So he had fifth row at the Cow Palace right in front. He was literally going to be five rows in front of Alex Lifeson. So and we were all the way in the back on the floor. So I convinced my friends. He said, why don't we see if we can sneak up and take my cousin's seats? He told me the numbers. And the three of us shared two seats. And it was such a wild night. People were trying to get up front and they were trying to sit in all these seats up front at the Cow Palace, which you don't know the Cow Palace.

00:29:03.520 --> 00:29:33.500
It was one of those venues where they used to have a lot of general admission shows there. So the whole floor would just be this massive, you know, it'd be like going to a massive basketball or hockey arena right now and the whole, you know, playing surface where the teams play would be open floor. But they had seats for this one. They were actually checking tickets and they were dragging people out and they literally stopped right at my friend. You know, and we ended up staying up there in front of Alex Lifeson for the whole night. And so that one just stood out the most just because

00:29:33.520 --> 00:30:03.500
We were literally right up that close. And that was the last time for 20-some years before I got even remotely close to see Rush. Because every time we try to get tickets for them, I'm always like 80 rows back. It's like, oh, fuck this. I saw them twice, and that's exactly how I saw them. 80 rows back. You take it for what it is. Any big band now that plays those huge outdoor venues. But the first one was... And then we went the next night in Oakland. And I literally...

00:30:03.540 --> 00:30:33.500
I think I had blood dripping from my nose. We were so far up on that one. So, Tale of Two Cities on those two shows. But that's the one that stands out the most from my early years. All right, Jay, we'll run through that list of yours. Me? Yeah. Okay, brief explanations on all of them, but very brief. Probably first and foremost, I've mentioned it before, Celtic Frost Reunion Tour, in which not just did I get to see them, but they did not disappoint. It was just everything I could have hoped it would have been. The Behemoth, some of these are more recent. The Behemoth Satanist Tour was

00:30:33.520 --> 00:31:03.500
awesome when they came and did the whole record that was cool the first time i saw gojira was the way of all flesh tour and they played um slims here in san francisco and it was right when they busted open you know and they weren't like they hadn't done an american headline tour i saw with my buddy john who's listening today and it was just one of the most amped up sweaty exciting shows i've ever was that was that when they toured within flames no it was this was a headline tour and i'm trying to remember who it wasn't in flames okay because they i saw them right before they

00:31:03.500 --> 00:31:32.980
They broke it big on that album. And they opened for Inflames. And it was, like you just said, it was at Ramset. And it was, and Will and I saw them also at Ramset another time. But the first time I saw them there, it was just insane. They destroyed everyone that was on the bill that night. So. Well, that, but there you go. That's the juxtaposition. Cause we did go to the Inflames tour as well. Now that I think about it. And it was the difference between Slims and the, um, the big one downtown, whatever the hell it is. It was a much bigger place. And, uh.

00:31:33.520 --> 00:32:02.620
No, no, no, not that big. Warfield. It was at Warfield. And the difference between a sweaty, small place where they were headlining, you know what I mean? Like, it just blew me into the water. Also with my buddy John, went to Iron Maiden on the pre-Dance of Death tour and saw them in Mountain View and then looked up the next day. They were playing Concord and thought, screw it, I'm going to try to get tickets, and we got front row seats. Front row seats the day of the show. And that was great.

00:32:03.940 --> 00:32:33.460
Opeth, when I saw them the first time, it was their first headline tour in America, and I saw them at The Pound. John, if you remember The Pound. It was like a death trap. Yes. And everybody was into it. It was amazing. It was wonderful. Just a couple more. Oh, okay, so two. One, when I was a huge kiss fan when I was a kid, when they did the reunion tour, the 1996, the first year of that was actually vital and kick-ass, and I swear to God, I had tears in my eyes, because it was the first time I got seen with makeup, and it blew me out.

00:32:33.520 --> 00:33:03.480
out of the water. I saw that tour too. It was good. I grew up loving Kiss. I've never seen them. Even the more recent tours have been really good. Yeah, they have. But this was when Paul still had his voice and you still didn't quite know to it. They still weren't overexposed. You know what I mean? And there was an energy about, Jay, wouldn't you agree there was an energy about that tour though? Fans were really into seeing him back to doing that again. Exactly. So there was like this special oomph to it. And I swear to God, I swear to God, I had tears in my eyes when it came out. And then the final one I'll mention, just because I'm

00:33:03.500 --> 00:33:33.380
I really think there should be more tours like this. Well first Heaven and Hell when I saw them the first time they were great but then the second when they did that Metal Masters tour why don't do that doesn't that happen more? Motorhead, Heaven and Hell, Judas Priest, Testament and I got to shake Ronnie James Dio's hand that night too. He came out into the audience ran up the side of the Mountain View Amphitheater ran up the side and before a few it's like everybody was kind of standoffish like what's going on right? James Dio's out here was singing at the time.

00:33:33.520 --> 00:34:03.300
I ran over shook his hand. It was awesome, dude. Nice. And they could sell those places out if they just put three, four bands like that together. Why? There should be a tour like that every year. I saw that. I saw that. It was awesome. It was the first time I saw Dio in any kind of machination of his various things he's done. And it was my first time seeing Motorhead. Am I last? I saw Iron Maiden Motorhead in Dio. I saw that was a great tour also. I saw that one too. And those were back to back. One was one.

00:34:03.500 --> 00:34:33.440
and I think the other one was the next. They were back to back. Yeah. Actually, the letdown on that tour was Priest because Rob Halford, they did a lot of like really old stuff, which I was looking more for like Screaming of Vengeance. That's why it was cool because they did play a lot of that old stuff. Yeah. So remind you, it was the Master Dramas tour. Yes. So I'm glad they didn't play a whole lot. They only did one song off that on that show. So yeah, do it again. That's correct. But so that's my list for better or for worse. You know, just like you guys, I've seen so many damn shit.

00:34:33.500 --> 00:35:03.420
I mean, and there are some I'm forgetting, but those all had a kind of special place for me for whatever reason. Cool. Yeah, the other one that really stands out to me is I was down in Bogota, Colombia in 2009, and I was just walking down the street with this guy I was working with, and you always see these, you know, handbills plastered all over the walls, and, you know, they get some fair amount of metal concerts down there, like Iron Maidens play down there, and Metallica play down there, but it's usually like, it's, oh, that was

00:35:03.560 --> 00:35:05.500
last year or that was like five months ago or

00:35:05.940 --> 00:35:07.240
it's coming in two months and

00:35:08.020 --> 00:35:09.580
but uh we were walking down the street

00:35:09.650 --> 00:35:11.640
we saw all these billboards for sick of it all

00:35:12.120 --> 00:35:13.640
i'm like what and then we looked at it

00:35:13.760 --> 00:35:15.320
and it's like wait a minute that

00:35:15.860 --> 00:35:16.520
that's tomorrow

00:35:18.159 --> 00:35:22.220
nice and so and my my friend matt uh who does not listen

00:35:22.710 --> 00:35:27.280
uh you know he you know he likes metal he likes iron maiden so in fact i went and saw iron maiden with matt one time

00:35:27.820 --> 00:35:32.740
and uh so we're like dude we gotta get tickets and it was like this weird thing like you call this number

00:35:32.740 --> 00:36:02.720
and you go and like we literally bought tickets off these like teenage kids who were like at a bar it was like the weirdest thing and then the place where they had the show was like an empty warehouse it was like everything about it was completely crazy shady but sick of it all did show up and i mean the security was insane like we like literally you couldn't take your you couldn't have a belt on you know because they're worried about like uh you know bombings and stuff like that because the war was still going on and and it's like this

00:36:02.760 --> 00:36:32.720
It's a giant pile of belts, and at the end of the show, I can't go find your belt. I mean, there was no air conditioning. And Bogota's at like 9,000 feet, so it's not hot. But when you have all these people in basically no fire marshal packed into this place, I mean, you couldn't even move. And then it's like, go outside and find your belt in like 3,000 belts. But it was such an insane show. I mean, I have so many. A lot of my favorite shows were

00:36:32.740 --> 00:36:35.360
from like the trocadero or the airport the allentown music hall

00:36:36.180 --> 00:36:41.680
allentown pennsylvania just so many like late 80s early 90s yeah so i always came to like saw

00:36:41.840 --> 00:36:48.580
chromag testament ratchild america which my dad went to and sat up in the balcony ratchild was that

00:36:48.760 --> 00:36:58.080
with uh testament yep uh pretty sure yeah testament headline ratchild america and uh it was like 1990

00:36:58.120 --> 00:37:28.040
Yeah, no, it was the Practice What You Preach tour. Yeah, I saw that. That was the first time I saw Rathchild America. They're so killer. Still one of my favorite 80s thrash bands of all time. Yeah, I didn't like the, what is it, Three Dimensional Man? Yeah. I didn't like that as much. In 3D album? Yeah, in 3D, but the one before that. Climbing the Walls. Climbing the Walls was great. Yeah. I actually forgot to mention, too, that Will prompted me on, and one was,

00:37:28.080 --> 00:37:57.940
I saw Jethro Tull do Aqualung on an anniversary tour in England, which was cool. And then the other one was I saw Fate's Morning in high school a couple of times, and a buddy of mine was Joe DeBias' cousin. So we got to hang out with the band and stuff, and that was pretty cool for my senior high school days to hang out with this metal band that I thought the world of. Yeah, I was going to say, I know obviously George went to Valken, and John has seen,

00:37:58.240 --> 00:38:28.020
in London for that special anniversary show. And I've been to Ross Guild in Denmark, and I saw Sick of It All down in Bogota. But I was going to ask you, Jay, if you've ever been overseas to see a show. Yep. And that one just happened. We were visiting my wife's father there in England. So whenever we go to Europe, I always look and see if there's a show, something going on. And we had to take a train for a few hours from where we were staying just to go see it and stay overnight to see Jethro Tull. Oh, and I ran into Ian Anderson in the train.

00:38:29.339 --> 00:38:56.780
He's like four feet tall. He's a little guy. So I got to go up and say hi to him, but he was like literally like arguing with somebody like where the fuck is my train because he couldn't find it. So he had to run. But it was cool to meet him. All right. So I'll do this quick. Back to 82 after I saw Simi Hagar all within a few months of each other. I saw Sabbath on the Mob Rules tour. Ozzy and the Diary of Madman tour and Priests on Scream for Vengeance.

00:38:58.100 --> 00:39:27.700
I'm not even really 15 yet. I'm like, holy shit, I've seen all these bands. That's awesome. I always thought that was cool. The first Prog Power was in, I don't know, George, if you remember this place, Jay, you probably, I don't know if you were, you might not know, but it was in Lansing, Illinois, called J.J. Kelly's, this little small dive, and they held the first Prog Power there, then the rest have all been held down in Atlanta, but it was kind of cool to see all these bands I never thought would ever come to the States in this little tiny bar.

00:39:28.100 --> 00:39:58.060
300 of us, you know, for two days. I always thought that was cool. I can pick, I don't know how many Opeth shows to put on here, but Will, you mentioned that one. Obviously, the first time I saw them, you know, on the Deliverance tour. Talking about Opeth anniversary. Yeah. But the Opeth show that stands out even more than the 25th anniversary was the chronology show they did. I saw them in Chicago at the House of Blues. They only did three of them in the States. And they basically had played a song from everyone

00:39:58.080 --> 00:40:27.820
in order of albums from the first through Ghost Reveries. And it was just cool to see them on that one. Again, only three shows in the States for that. And I think they only did a total like six or seven worldwide. I didn't go, but I remember that. I remember because I was still really into them at that time. Yeah. A non-concert or non-metal band that I, or artists I saw that really stood out is the last time I saw David Bowie, which was in Pittsburgh in 2004. I didn't think that would be the last time I ever saw him. And it ended up being the last time I got to see him.

00:40:28.080 --> 00:40:56.680
The first two times I saw him, the shows were cool, but there was just something about them that I came away like, I don't know. But seeing him that last time, which was all encompassing history that he played live, I thought was very cool. And from there, it's just, I mean, like you said, I can't remember if it was Will or Jay said, I could easily pick another 20 or 25 shows right now off the top of my head that stand out. So that mattered to you. Yeah.

00:40:56.760 --> 00:41:26.680
You know, it ends up becoming, oh, I saw Maiden on the 666 tour in Toronto, when they literally only played three North American shows, or I should say Western Hemisphere shows, and I went and saw them in Toronto, and the guy from Bangor Television was there. Sam Dunn was literally in our section filming, like down below. We were going to go talk to him, but he got mobbed by people, and I was like, I'm not going to bother. Was that the Brave New World tour? No, no, it was just one of those in-between.

00:41:26.800 --> 00:41:56.680
It was Summer in Time revisited, basically. It was after the second part of the early years. Remember the early years were up through Peace of Mind? And then they did the Summer in Time revisited thing where they did everything from Power Slave through, I guess, Seven Sun. They concentrated on those albums. And that's the movie that got released, you know, 666. I didn't mention my non-metal one, though, which was Leonard Cohen, which I saw on that big, kind of late.

00:41:57.160 --> 00:42:26.320
It was so good. I saw it too. It blew me out of the way. My wife and I were both like, wow, that was such a good show. When he does Hallelujah, oh my God. All of it, the whole tour, the whole night. Yeah, I was in tears. I got another quick non-metal one. The only time I ever got to see Steve Ray Vaughan. Which if you're a guitar player, I mean, it doesn't matter if you like blues or not, just seeing him live. I remember he played the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor and I didn't go. And he'd been clean.

00:42:26.760 --> 00:42:53.800
right before he died. It just was amazing, that tour. So that was very cool. Yeah, there's a couple obvious ones I didn't mention, like Death Bowl Metal and Beer Fest last year. Well, yeah. I mean, it was just awesome. Yeah. And the one year I did go to Death Fest was incredible. It was awesome. That was way fun, yeah. Plus we all got to hang out. Yeah, that was the first time we got to hang out. George, you got a little less correct? I got a couple more.

00:42:56.760 --> 00:43:25.840
I wanted my first show to be was the aforementioned Ozzy and Metallica Master of Puppets tour with Cliff Burton. I remember hearing that it was coming, I think it was to Kobo in Detroit, and my parents would not let me go. I was pissed. I was even, of course, even more pissed after Cliff died. Were you grounded? No, they were just like, you know, you're not old enough. I was like 15 probably, but I hadn't been to a show yet. And, you know, they didn't want to go.

00:43:25.880 --> 00:43:55.820
And so do you still talk to your parents? I would. I have to add a missed opportunity then too because when we talked about our first concerts, so it was my buddy's birthday. That's why we were able to go to a show. And we had two shows to choose from. It was Kiss and Queensryche or Iron Maiden and Twisted Sister. And Iron Maiden was headlining on the Power Slave Tour. And to this day, as much as I like Kiss as a kid, I want to tell him.

00:43:55.900 --> 00:43:57.240
You made the wrong choice

00:43:58.060 --> 00:43:59.600
Scream for me Jay

00:44:01.960 --> 00:44:03.080
It was in Kansas City

00:44:03.440 --> 00:44:05.280
One was in St. Louis, one was in Kansas City

00:44:05.380 --> 00:44:07.040
Has anyone ever seen Twisted Sister?

00:44:07.380 --> 00:44:07.740
Yes, twice

00:44:10.080 --> 00:44:12.300
That would be a good reunion

00:44:12.320 --> 00:44:13.700
I bet they could sell a

00:44:14.440 --> 00:44:16.280
fuck ton of tickets if they did some sort of reunion

00:44:16.680 --> 00:44:17.980
They just did a long one

00:44:18.100 --> 00:44:19.220
They just wrapped it up basically

00:44:20.160 --> 00:44:22.740
They just didn't go to any of the places where we could have seen them

00:44:22.860 --> 00:44:24.880
That was one of my most metal moments

00:44:24.880 --> 00:44:54.860
was being up on the stage at Jack's. And Dee Snider up there headbanging that long-ass blonde hair so hard that his hair was beating me in the face. And I'm just like, flagellate me with your hair, Dee Snider. When was this? That would have been, I don't know, early 2000s, probably. That was one of the American things. Which, by the way, that was the Power Slave slash Stay Hungry tour. I mean, dude. Oh, man. See that, yeah. Well, Jay, you can listen to it on Live After

00:44:57.740 --> 00:45:02.860
I had two other ones one was seeing Dio at the record theater in Towson

00:45:03.980 --> 00:45:09.200
which if you're not familiar with the place is a teeny ass little it's like a bar practically yeah

00:45:09.720 --> 00:45:23.839
and you know this was you know towards the end of it this was the first time I saw him so he he got to bigger venues again because he did the Iron Maiden Motorhead Dio thing later but this was like I don't know probably like Master of the Moon or something like that

00:45:24.080 --> 00:45:53.720
And it was just so cool to see him in this teeny ass little venue that I could get up real close. Obviously not as close as Jay, but it was still really cool. It's a little bigger than teeny. I mean, it holds like 700 people. But it's not like 930 Club or even not even maybe Jack's, but it's, you know, I think it's maybe it's this is a good people would notice. It's like the black cat, I think, in terms of size. But considering the stature of the person playing,

00:45:53.840 --> 00:46:23.820
who you would think would be playing something much larger. Point well taken. Yeah. Hey, you guys will appreciate this. Who I saw at the record theater? Who? Kitty. That was going to be my guess. I saw Byzantine there too. I actually saw Opeth there at the record. Really? How long ago was that? That they were playing that small of a place? I don't know. Well, I'll find out here in a second for you. My last concert was

00:46:23.840 --> 00:46:53.820
It was such a cool lineup. It was a package deal. And when I was looking this up to remember who was on it, I realized I'm getting old because I'm forgetting bands that I've seen. This was the Operation Rock and Roll tour. And it was Judas Priest headlining on the Painkiller tour. Alice Cooper on Hey Stupid. Motorhead doing 1916. Dangerous Toys on their second and

00:46:55.000 --> 00:47:22.800
and Metal Church, which is the band I completely forgot about because remember John saw them at Prog Power and I was all like, oh yeah, I never saw them. I did actually see them. Yeah. Go ahead, sorry. And this tour was amazing because it's the one and only time I saw Priest. And you know. Still to this day? Yeah. Oh no, the only time with Rob. I did see Priest with Ripper at the record.

00:47:23.840 --> 00:47:52.920
Didn't you go to the Metal Masters thing? No. I mean, not that there's any. No, I went to the Iron Maiden Motorhead Dio. Yeah. Not the other one. And I went to that too. It was awesome. And, but a couple things that stood out. I think it was during Painkiller, but I could be wrong. Rob coming out on stage on the motorcycle. Alice Cooper. That was just one of the greatest sets ever. You know, guillotines and babies.

00:47:53.840 --> 00:48:22.860
You know, the whole nine yards with the props, which he doesn't do as much anymore. At least not the times I've seen him lately. Motorhead was the first time I saw Motorhead, and they're doing 1916, which is one of my favorite Motorhead albums. And I remember getting goosebumps and teary-eyed when they played Love Me Forever, Not At All, because Lemmy was just like such a rock and roll god during that song.

00:48:23.840 --> 00:48:53.820
that I was just like, I get Motorhead now. Motorhead, yeah. They were great, dude. Yeah. And Dangerous Toys, I really liked their first album, and I still like their first album, despite it being sort of hair metal. And in fact, Jason McMaster has a new band called Howling Sycamore that's coming out at the end of the month. I'm curious to see what that sounds like, because he's in the band with him as Hans Grossman. So real quick, Will, you asked me about that when I saw Opeth at the Record Theater. It was in 2006, where they

00:48:53.860 --> 00:49:23.020
We play with Dark Tranquility and the Devin Townsend Band. And in one last show, Alice Cooper was mentioned. I actually got to see Alice Cooper at NAMM, if anyone knows what NAMM is. And it was a special pass only. And I got it from my friend Anne's husband, Gene Kirkland, who's a famous rock photographer. But I got to go and see him with like 500 people at NAMM, which is like a small event at NAMM, considering how big NAMM is.

00:49:23.440 --> 00:49:52.800
But I can't tell you how many musicians were there. I ran into the guys from Opeth. I mean, there was just anyone you could think of that that's a musician is at NAMM every year. You know, I have to elaborate on one of mine, too. I just can't help myself. But it was because and I think John will appreciate this. It goes back to that Opeth show that I saw. I mean, I've seen him a bunch of times. But it was the first tour in America where they headlined. And it was in this small place. It was overheated, overfull.

00:49:52.820 --> 00:49:55.620
It was sort of like people didn't quite understand how much the metal community

00:49:55.820 --> 00:49:56.520
love this crowd yet

00:49:57.150 --> 00:49:58.520
or love this band

00:49:59.120 --> 00:50:01.480
and at that point

00:50:01.770 --> 00:50:02.900
in the Fair Judgment song

00:50:04.220 --> 00:50:06.800
where it gets really piano-y at the end, John, and then he says

00:50:08.359 --> 00:50:09.640
nothing left here

00:50:09.780 --> 00:50:11.600
you know that here, here, that part

00:50:12.060 --> 00:50:13.360
he got right up to that part

00:50:13.820 --> 00:50:15.320
and the whole crowd was right on edge

00:50:15.760 --> 00:50:17.760
and it got dead silent and some kid in the crowd

00:50:17.940 --> 00:50:18.880
shouted, here!

00:50:19.330 --> 00:50:21.340
and instead of singing to Michael and the whole band

00:50:21.360 --> 00:50:51.280
and it was just brilliant, dude. I mean, it was just the vibe in that room was amazing. Okay, I have one moment like that, and my friend Lisa and I joke about this all the time, Opeth at the 930 Club. I think it was 930. I have the bootleg somewhere. There's a moment where it gets really quiet in the 930. The 930 holds about 1,300. It's a two-tier place. Literally dead silent. Not even anyone talking. It just finished the song. And some guy up front yells,

00:50:51.360 --> 00:51:21.040
out at the top of his lungs, yeah, Satan, like that. And it was just perfect. It was just the right volume for everybody to hear without him being obnoxious. Right, right, right, right. To this day, we still will see each other, yeah, Satan. Yeah, for sure, dude. I love those moments. Yeah, so if you follow on the Facebook page, you'll see sometimes I like to post anniversary albums to see what people think.

00:51:23.760 --> 00:51:51.100
I do that and I do the New Music Friday thing. So I said to George, maybe we should do something since it's the beginning of the year, some prominent album celebrating anniversaries this year. I thought it might be kind of cool. And we came up with a bunch of ones that have 20 year anniversaries. And as a quick sidebar, why this is kind of interesting, we're doing it today, is that today is the 47th anniversary of

00:51:51.160 --> 00:52:21.020
Black Sabbath releasing Paranoid. So that's kind of funny how that happened. Oh, really? Yeah. 47 years. Older than me. God. Not me. It's crazy how one of my favorite albums ever was made before I was born. And my children's favorite albums because it has fairies were boots. You got to believe them. And at some point you'll be able to explain to them what the fairies really means. But anyway, so George, I kind of, I came up with a list and I said, hey,

00:52:21.140 --> 00:52:51.100
add whatever you want to this because i know i've i've gonna leave out a lot of genres that i'm not as familiar as some other people but i think we have a decent list here so i don't know do you want me to read some off george and you read them off after that or you just read the ones you did and i'll put the ones i did sure let's do that so uh and these are in alphabetical or not in order of when they're released but in 20 years ago blind guardian released nightfall and middle earth which if you're a blind guardian fan that's one of the the what i guess two or three albums that people

00:52:51.140 --> 00:53:21.100
I'll gravitate towards for them. An album that I think I need to get now that it's been re-released. I know George just got these on vinyl. Bruce Dickinson's The Chemical Wedding was released 20 years ago. Jay's nipples just got hard. One of my favorite records, man. You know, I don't have it. And I listened to it briefly today. I'm like, oh, this sounds pretty good. Maybe I should get this. It's awesome, dude. Super heavy. And I think a lot of people that follow Bruce's career, that's his

00:53:21.120 --> 00:53:51.020
The One of the Two that I think a lot of people gravitate towards again the most. A band that I think we all like, their final album release, Death Sound of Perseverance. Oh, yeah. A band I never got into too much, but I know people liked them, Gorguts, released Obscura. That was my first album from them. It's also hard for me to believe that was 20 years ago. Isn't that crazy? Yeah. Do a little power metal here from the States, Iced Earth, Something Wicked This Way Comes.

00:53:51.760 --> 00:54:21.040
One of their best. Yeah, I think so too. And one of my favorites. And then the last one on my list here, which is kind of worked out perfect, which I'm having a real hard time accepting, but it's true. Opeth released My Arms Your Hearse, which was the change in sound for them after their first two albums. And I like the first two albums a lot, but it's the sound that I prefer the most for them, starting with this album. And it has some of their best songs.

00:54:21.120 --> 00:54:51.080
they've ever released. So, George, I'll let you finish up the last few ones that you came up with. Sure. Because John didn't want to associate with these albums. Or he just didn't know. Actually, not true, because there was a couple I thought about putting on, but I wasn't sure if you thought we should have put them on. So I'm glad you did. Yeah. So the first one is the Cradle of Filth album, Cruelty and the Beast, which I know not a lot of people are fans. But for me, that is probably one of their best albums. I never got into them, so I don't know anything.

00:55:05.600 --> 00:55:21.100
I don't think I had a job yet and I was just kind of pissy and that album came out and I was just like yes something good to hold on to so what has changed not much not much

00:55:24.819 --> 00:55:51.080
And then Monster Magnet's Power Trip, 20 years. I can't believe that's 20 years. That's crazy. You know I love them. And that is one of their great records. Incidentally, the new one is available for a pre-order now. I'm super excited about it. So maybe we'll get a promo on that. I don't know who they're with right now. It's either Nuclear Blast or Napalm. I can't remember which one. All right. Well, we might get one. Nuclear Blast, we probably,

00:55:51.160 --> 00:56:19.400
would. Napalms, hit or miss. Next, 20 years ago, the very first album from Nile, Amongst the Catacombs of Nephron Ka. Is it the first album or the first LP? Because didn't they have an EP before that? They may have. The first debut full-length album. Gotcha. Okay. That's why I didn't know to put that on there, not when I first started looking at this. Cool. And my last one,

00:56:21.140 --> 00:56:22.300
Sentenced Frozen.

00:56:23.940 --> 00:56:24.980
Let it go.

00:56:28.400 --> 00:56:29.180
Will has kids.

00:56:29.440 --> 00:56:29.700
Yeah.

00:56:30.680 --> 00:56:31.380
That one.

00:56:33.160 --> 00:56:36.420
I have a lot of history with that album as well.

00:56:36.700 --> 00:56:36.820
So.

00:56:37.680 --> 00:56:41.580
I don't care what they're going to.

00:56:43.260 --> 00:56:43.540
Yep.

00:56:45.460 --> 00:56:47.720
The look of annoyance on George's face.

00:56:48.260 --> 00:56:50.500
No, George is just saying that.

00:56:50.580 --> 00:57:17.480
That edit button is going to be used. You need a toilet flushing, George. That would be good. Ten albums you guys mentioned. I have four of them. How many do you guys have? Oh, good question. Let me look. In any format? I have all of them. I have seven of them. I have Death, Gore, Guts, Nile, and Opeth.

00:57:21.560 --> 00:57:50.540
I actually have eight and I have one two three four five six seven of them on vinyl anyway all right all right moving on let's uh get into the news

00:57:54.660 --> 00:58:20.160
God, this one fucking pisses me off. So right before Christmas, Reverend Jim Forrester, who plays in Serpents of Secret Sea, Foghound, local Baltimore-based, DC-based bands, bassist, nice guy. He's a tattoo artist, body piercer up in Fells Point in Baltimore. And he was standing outside his tattoo shop.

00:58:20.580 --> 00:58:50.440
Right before Christmas, cold outside, on the phone with his wife, and he was shot in the chest for absolutely zero apparent reason other than Baltimore is quickly catching up to Chicago as the murder capital of the United States. I think it's number two now. Sorry to hear that, man. Yeah. And what, I mean, aside from just the senseless murder of a great dude, great musician, I mean, big, huge, influential in the local,

00:58:51.020 --> 00:58:52.180
local metal scene.

00:58:53.560 --> 00:58:54.860
Is that if you guys remember,

00:58:55.460 --> 00:59:01.080
we actually talked about Jim a couple episodes ago because he was battling some serious health problems.

00:59:01.260 --> 00:59:03.920
He's been in and out of the hospital and literally they thought he was going to die.

00:59:05.200 --> 00:59:10.340
And so we put together a benefit concert for him to raise some money for him.

00:59:11.640 --> 00:59:14.740
Opeth, Tone, and someone else.

00:59:15.110 --> 00:59:15.640
Not Opeth.

00:59:15.820 --> 00:59:16.320
Did I say Opeth?

00:59:16.400 --> 00:59:16.580
Yeah.

00:59:16.960 --> 00:59:17.760
Yeah, that would be cool.

00:59:18.880 --> 00:59:46.600
They really stepped out. I was reading my script. Borracho. Good friends in Borracho, Tone, and Dirt Eater, I think, played. And we did raise some money for his medical bills. And for a few months later, for him to be fucking shot, senseless murder. So there's been a lot. There was another benefit show for him to raise money for his family now. Up at Cafe 611, they had a nice little show they threw together.

00:59:46.700 --> 01:00:16.660
But his wife has been very vocal in the social media and the regular media lately just about like Baltimore's need to clean their shit up. I mean, they just it's bad. I mean, I don't like going to Baltimore. I always thought the whole city was a fucking shithole to begin with downtown. Yeah, it is. It's a shame. But, you know, it's the whole thing that they're politicians, the mayor, they give themselves raises and they're just not really doing anything about the matter.

01:00:16.720 --> 01:00:46.640
Massive Crime. And it's just, it's young men roaming the streets, killing each other. Mostly killing each other, but every now and again. And they're, they're, they're, so Fells Point, if you know Baltimore, is one like the higher, nicest touristy places. It's like Old Town Alexandria. There's bars and. Yeah. But I believe where, I believe where the shop was, was the northern part of Fells Point, though, wasn't it? I think. I'm not 100% sure. I never. I think it is. Not that that should make a difference.

01:00:46.700 --> 01:01:15.480
because that part of Fells Point has improved greatly. But you're right. It's not in an area you would expect this kind of spillover. And it's all over the city. So you can go on Bandcamp, look up Foghound, and they released a song. I think it's one of the last songs that Jim played on. And ironically, I guess it was going to be on the new album, and the song was about Jim and his health battles.

01:01:16.720 --> 01:01:46.660
So you can go on there, buy the song, and you can donate. It's Name Your Own Price. So basically you can donate to the cause to help his family out who just lost, you know, husband and stepdad. That's terrible. And that's also terrible about Baltimore. That's just awful. Yeah. And unfortunately, not to drag any politics in this, I'll just say this one thing. It's almost as if it's a forgotten story now.

01:01:46.720 --> 01:02:14.320
at least in the media. Yeah, sure. You're not hearing much about it. I mean, I first heard about it. Not just Baltimore in general? No, his story, too, to some degree. It's just it got some media attention at the beginning, and now it's just let's move on. There's probably been a dozen more murders since then. Exactly. Right. That's the shame. But just the idea of somebody on the phone with their wife talking in front of the place of business, and they've got nothing but a grainy video, and that's it. Yeah.

01:02:17.579 --> 01:02:18.480
Who did it?

01:02:19.900 --> 01:02:21.100
What's crazy is if you look at the video

01:02:21.240 --> 01:02:26.200
It's just like two young dudes who just look look like they're just walking down the street looking at their phones and stuff blah blah blah

01:02:26.230 --> 01:02:27.880
I mean if it is these guys who

01:02:28.690 --> 01:02:34.180
Actually shot him, but I guess they're pretty sure it's them and and they have multiple cameras multiple views

01:02:34.620 --> 01:02:37.780
one of them even looks straight up at the camera is pretty distinctive looking so it's not like

01:02:38.880 --> 01:02:44.379
Some nondescript person with a hoodie on I mean they didn't look like they were dressed to go out and kill and they just I guess they just

01:02:44.980 --> 01:03:14.900
Fucking shot him. Wasn't there something like his wife heard him say, like, hey, get away from me or something? Yeah. I mean, she heard she heard him dying. She heard him. She heard the altercation and she heard him get shot. Well, that sucks. All right. Well, you almost like feel shitty just moving on from this. But and we're moving on to another great story. But I would just say this. Like, if anyone's listening, go check out Serpents of Secrecy.

01:03:14.980 --> 01:03:42.300
and Foghound on Bandcamp. You'll see on there the special song that you can purchase. And just, you know, it was a buck. I mean, I spent $50 on a song. One song. So, and I thought about paying a lot more. Nice. But there's a GoFundMe, I think there's a GoFundMe page for them. You can look it up. Okay. Basically, how about the family? Hell yeah. So, in other news, not surprisingly,

01:03:44.980 --> 01:04:14.800
Dropped Against Decapitated. I shouldn't say not surprisingly. You don't know. But it seemed kind of hokey at the outset. And apparently the police decided that the woman pressing charges has had a history of lying to the police and whatnot. And so they dropped the charges. So that's good, I guess. Yeah, if you read the, whatever,

01:04:14.980 --> 01:04:44.940
the local paper that had the longer story about this. They said the charges were being dropped by the request of the defendant's lawyer because she's been through enough. Actually, did they say that, or did they say it because of her state? Basically, she's had enough of her mental state. Yeah, they kind of said for her to heal and move on from this, it was almost like the defendant's

01:04:44.980 --> 01:05:14.940
Sorry, the plaintiff's lawyer, the woman's lawyer, requested to drop the charges, but it looks like they were going to have the charges dropped anyway. Like she's trying to save face. I was reading that the police officer on the scene said that they did not have enough evidence at the time of the incident. Something to the effect of there was nothing pointing to

01:05:14.960 --> 01:05:44.480
A Crime Having Happened. Yeah, and they were saying that she had, initially she had bruising on her arms, which was consistent with being restrained, but then witnesses also said that, well, yeah, she was in the mosh pit all night and up against the barricade. Yeah. I get bruised in the mosh pit, let alone a younger woman, so. Or maybe old men and young women bruise at the same rate. I don't know. Nothing hurts worse than a bruise right in the mosh pit. Yeah, and I don't want to make light of this,

01:05:44.540 --> 01:06:12.920
as in, oh, the whole thing was bullshit. Because the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. It's probably quite possible that Decapitated did something pretty bad. But I guess that it wasn't enough that they could be charged for it. Because I think they admitted, like, yes, she was on the bus. Sure, but that doesn't mean they did anything wrong. And I'm not trying to be, what do you call it? I don't know.

01:06:14.180 --> 01:06:44.140
I'm not trying to side with the band because obviously I wasn't there. I don't know shit. But, you know, and I'm sure this sort of thing does go on, whether Decapitated did it or it's some other band. It's certainly something that needs to be addressed. Yeah, I guess in the end, if the new album was better, I'd be... Well, you gotta wonder how this is gonna... You gotta wonder how this is gonna affect them moving forward. Whether there's gonna be

01:06:44.180 --> 01:06:46.000
a taint on this, even though the charges were dropped.

01:06:46.660 --> 01:06:54.440
I think that's inevitable no matter what happens. I mean, anytime someone's in this situation, right or wrong, I don't think that ever goes away.

01:06:54.620 --> 01:07:02.400
Yeah. And that's part of the shame of it. We don't know. We weren't there, like you said. But no matter what the truth is, their whole trajectory is different now.

01:07:03.160 --> 01:07:06.320
Yeah. I mean, would they even want to come back to the states again?

01:07:06.500 --> 01:07:06.600
No.

01:07:06.840 --> 01:07:08.900
I wouldn't. I wouldn't. I mean.

01:07:09.420 --> 01:07:39.400
It's just who knows. I mean, nobody, no matter what anyone believes about this story, who wasn't there, doesn't know what happened. They can only go on accounts for people who are there. So. But I have a certain amount of faith in the justice system, to be honest with you. And I agree that that everything fell apart is suspicious to me. I agree. I agree. She was caught lying to the police about something similar, about some other domestic abuse case, I guess, with her boyfriend or something. So, I mean, she, she's

01:07:39.420 --> 01:07:42.880
I had a history with this. Whether this really happened,

01:07:43.440 --> 01:07:46.380
when you're trying to approve a without-a-reasonable-doubt case,

01:07:46.660 --> 01:07:50.320
and she's not a credible witness,

01:07:50.740 --> 01:07:55.800
or, yeah, basically her credibility is shot

01:07:55.900 --> 01:07:56.960
because she's already lied to the police.

01:07:59.640 --> 01:08:01.000
Where did it happen again?

01:08:01.160 --> 01:08:02.140
Was that Northwest?

01:08:02.420 --> 01:08:02.940
Washington State.

01:08:03.060 --> 01:08:03.620
Washington State.

01:08:03.700 --> 01:08:04.420
Washington State, okay.

01:08:04.660 --> 01:08:07.300
But weren't they incarcerated in Los Angeles or something?

01:08:07.360 --> 01:08:08.000
Am I making that up?

01:08:08.100 --> 01:08:08.200
Yeah.

01:08:09.019 --> 01:08:37.140
I guess they went down to California and they were resting in California because that's where the next place in the tour was or something. Ah, and then they, okay. Well, good. I want to say good for them after a fashion, but like we say, we don't know the true thing. But no, it's too bad, man. It's just one of those big messy situations. Yep. I'll still judge them on their music and I thought the last time it was kind of crap. There you go. Yeah. Yeah. Well, speaking of crap, just kidding.

01:08:38.600 --> 01:09:08.540
Am I? I'm going to try, George, to listen to the whole thing. If you're going bullet by bullet, then I 100% agree that this next thing is crap. I don't even know why we're talking about it. Did you listen to it? Yeah. All of it? No, as much as I could. Much that you could take. So, the next thing is that Therian released the lyric video for the song Temple of New Jerusalem from their forthcoming three-plus-hour beloved Antichrist. And so, to put that in perspective, that's two and

01:09:08.580 --> 01:09:38.540
And change Bellwitch Mirror Reapers. Which is hard enough to get through. I only got through about four or five songs before I turned it off because it's not good. It's just middle of the road. You're just sort of like, oh man, how am I going to put up with it? Oh. Junga, Junga, Junga, Junga, Junga, Junga, Junga, Junga, Junga, Junga

01:09:38.580 --> 01:09:40.520
opera vocals because they're annoying.

01:09:41.920 --> 01:09:44.640
Yeah, this was... I don't know what the fuck this was.

01:09:44.759 --> 01:09:46.000
I don't know why we're even talking about it.

01:09:46.020 --> 01:09:46.400
Like this...

01:09:47.000 --> 01:09:48.480
You know, the kind of the...

01:09:49.520 --> 01:09:50.600
The music and the lyrics...

01:09:50.660 --> 01:09:51.140
Not the music.

01:09:51.540 --> 01:09:53.700
The lyrics themselves were kind of cool.

01:09:53.779 --> 01:09:54.780
Like it was all about this old...

01:09:54.800 --> 01:09:55.620
It's based on a...

01:09:55.640 --> 01:09:56.440
You know, biblical...

01:09:56.560 --> 01:09:57.020
Something else.

01:09:58.080 --> 01:09:58.360
Right.

01:09:58.640 --> 01:10:00.640
And I watched the video for a little bit.

01:10:00.640 --> 01:10:01.340
It was kind of cool.

01:10:01.340 --> 01:10:05.920
We see old shots of, you know, Jerusalem and the old city and stuff like that.

01:10:06.120 --> 01:10:36.100
I was like as soon as the vocals came in I was like what the fuck is this and why are we wasting our time on this? Do you not know them Will? No I don't. They're a pretty famous metal band that have been around for like 25 years. I've heard of them before but I've never. They're pretty cutting edge you know when they melded the symphonic sound into death metal back in the 90s. In the operatic sound and the power metal? They're not power metal. This one they kind of are. I have no problem saying that this

01:10:36.140 --> 01:10:38.080
The Album stinks because we're talking about

01:10:38.170 --> 01:10:39.300
a theory and right? Yeah.

01:10:40.460 --> 01:10:41.920
All right. I didn't know if we were talking about the next one.

01:10:41.920 --> 01:10:44.020
But I'm calling this our new segment, which is

01:10:44.180 --> 01:10:46.180
We Call Bullshit. And what I mean is if at the end

01:10:46.180 --> 01:10:48.000
of the year, anybody's saying that this was a

01:10:48.120 --> 01:10:50.500
groundbreaking something, they're full of shit.

01:10:50.780 --> 01:10:52.380
Yeah. All right. Good. I just want to make sure

01:10:52.380 --> 01:10:53.920
I wasn't the only one who thought this was total crap.

01:10:54.280 --> 01:10:55.480
No, no. I think it's universal.

01:10:55.850 --> 01:10:57.420
No, I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm just saying

01:10:57.740 --> 01:10:59.580
you're saying why are we talking about them?

01:10:59.730 --> 01:11:01.900
And my point is we probably should

01:11:02.200 --> 01:11:03.119
because they're in

01:11:03.640 --> 01:11:33.100
Back in the mid-early 90s, they were doing things that nobody else was doing at that point. Yeah, they were good, but I haven't liked an album in 20 years. It sucks, it sucks. So this is like Machine Head. Yeah. We'll get to that. They're way better than Machine Head. Fuck them. But like, Feli was the last good album as far as I'm concerned. I mean, Vovin was okay. Vovin's good. Vovin's good. But that was the last really metal album to me, and they had Dan Spano on there. I don't think so. I think they had a couple

01:11:34.260 --> 01:12:03.040
I mean, but they weren't, they just didn't grab me like the earlier stuff. And I even liked the first like two or three albums that were more death metal, but. I thought Lemuria and Cirrus B were pretty, pretty metal. Those were pretty good albums. So. Yeah, you know, whatever. You never listened to them. I do. No, I did. But I like, I couldn't get into them. I gave them like one listen. I was like, meh. Yeah, you're weird, but that's cool. You're weird. But I will say, but I will say this after those two albums,

01:12:03.120 --> 01:12:07.440
I have not liked anything they've done since Cirrus B and Lemuria.

01:12:07.860 --> 01:12:07.980
Yeah.

01:12:09.900 --> 01:12:10.300
All right.

01:12:10.660 --> 01:12:14.500
So next up we have Visigoth.

01:12:15.300 --> 01:12:19.420
They're getting ready to release their second album, Conqueror's Oath, on February 9th.

01:12:20.320 --> 01:12:22.160
And they released the song Warrior Queen.

01:12:23.440 --> 01:12:27.560
And I'm guessing, based on his previous comments, that Will did not like this.

01:12:27.960 --> 01:12:28.220
No.

01:12:28.920 --> 01:12:30.240
I'm kind of over power metal.

01:12:30.300 --> 01:13:00.280
I liked it back in the 80s and early 90s. Like Halloween and stuff. To me, this song, I wouldn't really call it power metal. I wouldn't know what you would call it, but it reminds me a lot of Grand Mages. It's the same kind of fantasy-themed hard rock doom metal kind of thing. I dig it. I've listened to the whole album, and it's pretty cool. I would call it traditional with some

01:13:00.340 --> 01:13:29.600
Aspects of the power metal, vocally, chorus stuff. That's a little bit where I kind of fall off the fence a little bit because there are aspects of this that are pretty good. But I just can't stand those big, overblown choruses. They drum me down. Ah, see, I dig them. You're not into gang vocals, Jay? I like some things with the word gang in them, but not everything. Bang? Just not your vocals? Just not your vocals? Well, since we're talking about crap, let's move on to the next one. Ooh.

01:13:31.560 --> 01:13:58.140
Is this the adult soft rock contemporary music section? Yes. Are you ready for soft rock? Sean, you are the last person to talk about this. Oh, what is that? I listen to just as much heavy stuff as you do. Well, I just don't listen to Clutch. Clutch has just entered the studio to start recording their next album. They say, quote, the material is a little heavier.

01:14:00.320 --> 01:14:28.760
They'll be able to make some year-end lists this time. Oh, they're gonna make one list. You know that. Yeah. But it might not be a metal list. Checking it twice. This is just water going to Will's back. He's like, screw you. I'm sure I've probably told you like a dozen times, but you know, I had dinner across the table from Neil Fallon once. When... At a wedding or something? No, I was at the Rock on the Range in Ohio.

01:14:30.320 --> 01:14:59.360
My friends in Charm City Devils were playing and I got to go with them to shoot photos and stuff. And so I got to be in the backstage area and there was a mess tent with picnic tables just like lined up in rows. And I was sitting there eating like a hamburger or something, some crappy backstage food. And Neil Fallon comes along and sits down on the other side of the picnic table from me and starts eating. And I'm like, oh, oh, oh, Neil Fallon.

01:15:00.320 --> 01:15:30.260
But I didn't say anything to him. I just watched him eat. It's interesting because I... Yeah, that's not creepy, George. You're like, I don't want to bother him, so I'll just stare at him while he's... Intensely chewing. Where's TR when we need him? George stared intensely. I listened to the new songs that they were playing on their European tour that I guess are going to be on the new album, and they sound just like regular clutch, so it didn't sound any heavy.

01:15:30.340 --> 01:15:56.640
or doomier to me whatsoever. But they sounded good for contemporary soft rock, as John likes to say. Well, for someone who gives me shit about everything I listen to, I think you can take a little dish back your way. Oh, I'll take your dish any day, bud. Yeah, man. Might be some chicken fingers on there, too. I enjoy this. I enjoy the Clutch Cannibal Corpse. Clutch Magic very much. I don't know how it works for me, but I'm just like, yeah, here we go, Clutch.

01:16:00.320 --> 01:16:30.000
All right, so we've got one more news item. And so far, I think we're all kind of in agreement on this one. But Judas Priest... This is not contemporary soft rock. Judas Priest released the video for their new song, Lightning Strike. And I think we all kind of liked it, at least, you know, cautiously optimistic in any way. Perfect way to put it. That's exactly where I'm sitting on it. Yeah. I hope the other songs are like this. My issue is, I told you guys, I think we all were sort of in agreement.

01:16:30.300 --> 01:17:00.280
The chorus is that kind of post-painkiller chorus I'm not so big on. But I thought the song had a nice kick to it, you know? It is what it is. The whole, like, pre-chorus into the chorus part, I know I said this and she probably ignored it, but to me it reminded me of Manowar's Blood of the Kings. Oh, I remember you saying that. It's just the, like, da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da

01:17:00.980 --> 01:17:30.160
Can you say that again? Blah, blah, blah. I went and I pulled up the lyrics for it and read them as he was doing the stuff and I was like, it kind of fits. Not that they're ripping it off or anything, but it's a cool bit, so I dig it. I like it. This reminds me of another new story that we probably won't have caught, which was on this morning, which is Chris Sangri's Dime.

01:17:30.300 --> 01:18:00.280
You guys see that who Chris Sankaridis he's the guy used to mix priest back in the 80s yeah yeah yeah he was made famous most recently by being in the anvil story of anvil movie he was the producer they wanted so bad to work on it but he would have produced some of the key albums in the 80s anyway he died he was 61 died yesterday well there you go yeah yeah I think we all universally like the new song none of us I don't think any of us thought it was like a whole like blow in our minds but it didn't suck and I think that's what everyone yeah it's not am I wrong

01:18:00.280 --> 01:18:30.160
The album cover sort of looks like the art style of both Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith. It's like a mix between the two a little bit, I think. But a little more contemporary. So it's nice if they are trying to make a little spiritual connection to that era. That gives me even more hope. Go ahead. I'm sorry, I will say this. If that's the connection that they're sort of making, like you said, Jay, in a slight degree, I will say that I appreciate that the sound is more organic than the sound that they created during Screaming for Vengeance and the Defenders of the Faith.

01:18:30.420 --> 01:19:00.260
But why I love both those albums, I'm not a fan of the kind of studio sound they had for those two. They sound great live. I just didn't like it on album as much. Sort of hyper-produced, yeah. Yeah, just too clean, too finished almost. Yeah, I think Jiu's Priest is, I think there's a couple bands that fall into this category. Like maybe Maiden, you know, Metallica to a certain extent. Priest is like, you know, you have these legendary bands that have produced some of the best

01:19:01.600 --> 01:19:26.840
metal albums ever. And so when you, you know, Slayer and, you know, we can name a million of them. And I should say not a million of them. You can select a few of them, but there's a lot of them out there that everything that Priest does is always going to be paired to those classic, you know, whether it's Stained Class, Buttersteel, Screaming for Vengeance, Defenders of the Faith, Painkiller, Turbo. I mean, not Turbo. Yeah, Turbo.

01:19:28.740 --> 01:19:58.620
I'm your turbo lover. What's up with that? That's actually true. I noticed that. It's one of the few songs by them that gets multiple plays. Strange. It'd be a great album. Less synthesized. It doesn't bother me at all. Obviously, it's not one of their best albums, but it is an okay, catchy album. It beats other 80s music. I'm not a fan.

01:19:58.720 --> 01:20:28.320
Yeah, that makes two of my song. We don't need no. Yeah, that sounds like. No, no, no. Parental guidance here. Here. Can we just do a gang vocals? Gang something. This is the part where Jay and John talk about all the cool songs like, you know, Grindr and Saints in Hell. Better by you, better than me. Yeah, exactly. You know, Genocide. I like those songs. Whatevs. Whatevs.

01:20:30.040 --> 01:20:30.600
All right.

01:20:31.960 --> 01:20:32.080
Wait.

01:20:32.260 --> 01:20:32.360
Okay.

01:20:32.550 --> 01:20:37.800
So, oh, I wanted to say, so John picked up tickets to go see them in March.

01:20:38.980 --> 01:20:39.100
Yep.

01:20:39.880 --> 01:20:40.460
At the...

01:20:40.500 --> 01:20:41.640
George and I are going.

01:20:42.160 --> 01:20:44.260
And Saxon's going to be there, which is such a cool little build.

01:20:44.300 --> 01:20:46.840
And Black Star Riders, the Thin Lizzy-ish.

01:20:47.040 --> 01:20:47.360
Oh, right.

01:20:47.430 --> 01:20:48.420
That Thin Lizzy thing, yeah.

01:20:48.480 --> 01:20:52.920
But I wanted to ask, do we have seats or is it like a general admission kind of thing?

01:20:53.160 --> 01:20:53.720
We are going...

01:20:54.370 --> 01:20:55.620
I don't know what the place is like.

01:20:55.660 --> 01:21:23.320
Well, I don't believe you've been there yet either. I haven't been there. Anthem? No. Anthem. It's a new venue open up in the harbor area of D.C. and I believe there's a connection to the 930 Club people. Yeah, there is. Which is good because 930, yeah, because 930 Club doesn't have metal anymore. I'll be honest, the only times you want to go to 930 Club, and I'm not taking a dig, Will, you know, Clutch will still play there, which is cool. I'm glad they still play. In the New Year's Eve time frame, yeah.

01:21:26.960 --> 01:21:55.620
We just don't get any metal shows. It used to be a great metal venue. I saw Demi there once. And Kurt Leveld. And Niall. Yeah, so many great shows there. Anyway, Anthem is a, I guess it's maximum 6,000 capacity venue that's built like the 930 Club with limited seating, but it's just going to be a big, huge open floor. And it's going to be kind of cool to see Priest maybe one of the last times will get a chance in a very small place for

01:21:55.660 --> 01:22:23.660
who, you know, at times, was playing in front of 15, 16, 17,000 people. I've seen them at Mountain View. They're playing Warfield here. Yeah, that's going to be, Warfield is a great theater, you know, so that'll be fun. So I think we're going to be pretty lucky to see them there. It's a shame that they can't sell out, like, hockey and basketball arenas anymore. Well, do another fucking Metal Masters tour, man. Yeah, that's true. Headline that one.

01:22:28.360 --> 01:22:52.280
The Metal scene is just a shame. Yeah. Well, they did big places when they did that British Steel tour. They just, I don't know. To be fair, they haven't done that much relevant stuff. So maybe if they had some kick-ass new album, that could change. Yeah. All right. Moving on to new releases, of which we actually have a few.

01:23:02.000 --> 01:23:23.820
The first one, the new Abagor album, Holland's Wang. Chronicles of Perdition. I don't know if we have any Abagor fans here. I'm guessing not. I just don't know. It's an Austrian black metal band. I gotta say, it's alright.

01:23:42.120 --> 01:23:54.020
The New Corrosion of Conformity, No Cross, No Crown, is going to be coming out. And I might have dissed this on a previous episode. You did.

01:23:55.660 --> 01:23:56.640
like the first song.

01:23:57.550 --> 01:23:58.900
And I will recant that.

01:24:00.060 --> 01:24:03.300
I'm not going to say it's album of the year, but it's pretty cool corrosion

01:24:03.420 --> 01:24:07.520
to conformity kind of Pepper Keenan, COC style music.

01:24:08.860 --> 01:24:13.220
Actually, George, I think Will and I know the album you already said was your album of the year.

01:24:13.400 --> 01:24:16.720
And Will may not agree with you on that, but I'll wait till you get to it.

01:24:16.740 --> 01:24:17.920
That's not my album of the year.

01:24:21.520 --> 01:24:21.940
Not anymore.

01:24:22.120 --> 01:24:51.720
No. Although one of these, in fact, this very next one is vying for that spot right now. And that's the new Shining album. X or 10. Vargutenflak, which I believe translates to Wolf Without a Pack. Shining is a bit of an oddball Swedish black metal band. The main guy, Nicholas, he's a bit of a weird one. But they put out interesting albums.

01:24:52.140 --> 01:25:22.100
The Last Album 9, I really liked a lot. That made my list. And I don't know if any of you guys have listened to this yet, but if you haven't, you really should. It's good. It's not in English, unfortunately, but it is good. I've listened to it a little bit, but I like what I hear, and I'll be going through it. Actually, there's two bonus tracks that are in English, and a little bit of the last regular album track has some English in it. He kind of throws English in every once in a while, every couple

01:25:22.180 --> 01:25:52.100
There's a lot of like scratchy and he even does clean vocals

01:25:52.120 --> 01:26:22.080
too. Okay, cool. I'll check it out. I've listened to it a couple times, and I really like it. I mean, there's a lot of contrast between the balls-out heavy black metal, which is really tight and clean, well-produced. It's very punchy. And then there's a lot of slower bits where he's just kind of... and talking and things like that. God knows what he's saying, but...

01:26:22.760 --> 01:26:52.080
I think if they always sang in English, they would be much higher in the pantheon of my metal bands just because I'm sure I would relate to the songs more if I knew what they were about. Not to knock them for not singing in English, but if I don't know what they're saying, the best I can do is appreciate the music. Next one, the new summoning album with Doom We Come. This is another one that I don't know if I've bashed it on here, but I was talking to Joel because

01:26:52.140 --> 01:27:20.680
Joel from Thrasenblatt is a summoning fan. And I was kind of talking crap about it to him. I was like, eh, it kind of sucks. And he was like, really? And I want to, I don't want to recant that, but I do want to explain it. I've listened to it a couple more times, and it is good from a certain perspective. The thing is that summoning uses a lot,

01:27:21.700 --> 01:27:50.300
A really big crutch of like orchestral elements, a lot of synth, you know, timpani and strings and and choirs and things. And the production is not good. And so if you if you listen to the album like I'm sure their fans do solely on the music. It's good music.

01:27:50.420 --> 01:28:20.120
Do you think their fans listen to the album? Is that what you're saying? I think the fans listen to the album, yeah. No, the songs themselves are well-crafted and interesting songs. The problem is it sounds like something I recorded in my basement. And when you have... Yeah, we've heard some of the stuff you recorded. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. It's like kind of crappy production. The difference being that their songs are good, yes. I get the point.

01:28:24.620 --> 01:28:48.280
But when you have music like this with all these grand epic elements, there has to be a level of belief that you're hearing orchestras and choirs doing this. And when it sounds like somebody banging on a keyboard in the basement, it takes you out of the story, so to speak. A drum machine always sounds like a drum machine. Not that that's what they're using. I think they are.

01:28:49.720 --> 01:29:17.940
Oh, they are? I think so, yeah. And so, you have to understand that it's not going to sound like that. I think if they had invested in a better mix, an engineer to come in and pretty the whole thing up a bit, it would sound better. So I'm on the fence right now because the songs themselves are actually kind of cool, but it's just hard to get behind that production.

01:29:18.740 --> 01:29:47.580
Anyway, I know you guys are falling asleep over there. No, no, not at all. I mean, it's an interesting wall to try to get over and it's relevant to a lot of releases. Yeah, you know, if you're going to make something epic, make it epic. Don't put in all these grand elements and then they just sound kind of flat. So, you know, a lot of bands do this and they make it sound amazing. So there's no excuse. They've been around long enough. They should be able to do that.

01:29:49.260 --> 01:30:18.700
Or at least know a guy who knows how to do that. Exactly. Next, we've got the new Watain album, Trident Wolf Eclipse. When we got the promo for this, it was a 128k MP3 and it just sounded horrible. And I think we're all in agreement on that one. Yeah, I didn't spend much time listening because I didn't want to listen to shit recording. Yeah. The album is released now and I've heard a better quality recording of it. And it's better, but

01:30:19.240 --> 01:30:46.440
It still doesn't really grab me. It's still kind of lo-fi, which is, of course, I'm sure what they're going for. It's black metal. But it didn't grab me. Not like this last new release, which everybody's grinning. Will is making a jerk-off motion. They are number five. They are not. The new White Wizard album, Infernal Overdrive.

01:30:48.740 --> 01:30:49.880
on this one apparently.

01:30:51.060 --> 01:30:51.220
Kinda.

01:30:51.600 --> 01:30:53.240
The rest of the guys have pretty much...

01:30:53.320 --> 01:30:54.140
Not kinda.

01:30:54.320 --> 01:30:59.060
No, they have in no uncertain terms expressed their disdain for this album.

01:30:59.660 --> 01:31:03.860
Much like this all started because I was complaining that Decibel gave the album a 5.

01:31:04.900 --> 01:31:07.540
I don't think it's a disdain for the album so much as it is the band.

01:31:08.760 --> 01:31:11.260
Well, I will admit they have put out some crap music.

01:31:11.470 --> 01:31:15.460
But their first full-length album, Over the Top, was awesome.

01:31:16.320 --> 01:31:17.960
Back in like 2010, I think.

01:31:18.300 --> 01:31:47.640
I loved that album. And then the singer and maybe the guitar player left and they had some other people and they put out some crappy albums. And now the singer and the guitar player are back for this album. And it's the same kind of stuff that I liked off of Over the Top. To me, it's a mix of Iron Maiden with Early Fates Warning, Early Omen, and maybe a little Iced Earth. And, you know, you guys can say what you want. It's not extreme metal.

01:31:48.300 --> 01:32:18.180
I wouldn't call it power metal. Is it even metal? It is definitely metal. Yeah, it's metal. On Over the Top, my song was... Like tin or aluminum? What? Like gold, like a real soft metal? Nah, man, it's heavy. I mean, as heavy as anything from the 80s is metal. On Over the Top, there was a song called Iron Goddess of Vengeance that was my jam. I really dug that song. And on this album, there's a song called Voyage of the Wolf.

01:32:20.180 --> 01:32:22.740
I haven't read the lyrics, but it sounds like

01:32:24.240 --> 01:32:29.860
sort of an American military anthem kind of song, which, you know, Will should be into.

01:32:30.220 --> 01:32:32.040
But I'm sure he didn't get that far into the album.

01:32:33.500 --> 01:32:36.000
No, I got about five seconds into it. I'm like, this is garbage.

01:32:38.180 --> 01:32:43.800
But I got to say, whether this will make my list or not, I cannot say this early in the year.

01:32:43.840 --> 01:33:13.800
But I would be surprised if there's a metal album that comes out this year that has better melodic hooks than this album. I bet none of you have listened to the whole album or even half of the album. And I won't. But there are a lot of good hooks on this album. So fuck you guys. You know. Dear listeners, what would you rather be? Would you rather be part of the crowd? They're like, oh, we all go this way. Would you like to be, you know,

01:33:13.860 --> 01:33:41.880
the loner that listens to what you like because it's what you like and fuck everybody else. Particularly fuck these guys. So, you know, whatever, you know. I mean, frequently on this show, we're all sort of on an island with the things that we like and everybody else pisses on it. And it's just what it is, you know. There's so much good metal out there in so many different styles that it's impossible for us to agree all the time. But still, fuck you guys.

01:33:43.860 --> 01:34:12.200
This is crap, except for you. It's because I have taste in bad music. I don't. Anyway. All right. Well, why don't we beat up on Jay a little bit now that we're done beating up on me? Yeah. Here's my biggest fear is these are all going to be questions about Final Frontier and stuff like that. Not a one for me. You might be surprised. I love that album. This is Skullcrushers, and it's Jay versus Iron Maiden.

01:34:15.100 --> 01:34:43.800
Why don't we start with John? You got some questions for him? Yeah, Jay, a lot of my questions are really old questions. Perfect. But I want to throw a softball out for you to start to see if you... I'm sure you know this, but let's just do it anyway, real quick. Get you kind of get the blood pumping. Prime the pump. So Bruce did a duet with someone, another great heavy metal vocalist.

01:34:44.360 --> 01:35:13.760
Can you name the duet? Who he did it with and the song? Is it recorded or is it a live? Oh, it's recorded. Is it on an Iron Maiden album? No, it's not an Iron Maiden album, but he did do something. Disqualified! No, not necessarily because he actually sings on the song, though, but I thought you might know this if we don't. About what year was it? 2000. Brave New World era. The other vocalist? Is that what you're asking? Okay. Yeah. I mean, who?

01:35:13.860 --> 01:35:21.000
the other vocalist is on Mount Rushmore.

01:35:21.000 --> 01:35:22.160
I believe I know what this is.

01:35:23.090 --> 01:35:24.220
Ian Gillen, I believe, probably.

01:35:24.870 --> 01:35:24.980
No.

01:35:25.220 --> 01:35:25.720
Rob Halford.

01:35:27.100 --> 01:35:28.260
Okay, you got that part.

01:35:28.640 --> 01:35:29.060
Jay got that.

01:35:29.150 --> 01:35:30.260
I mean, George got that part right.

01:35:30.880 --> 01:35:33.760
And then that Jeff Tate thing, too, was it that thing?

01:35:34.880 --> 01:35:38.280
Well, I think Tate sings on the song live, but he's not on the album.

01:35:39.180 --> 01:35:40.920
Because Bruce wanted to do this thing.

01:35:40.950 --> 01:35:43.600
He wanted to do the three tenors of metal, and he wanted it to be him.

01:35:43.700 --> 01:36:13.660
Halford and Dio. Dio wouldn't do it, and that's how Jeff Tate got involved. Why would Dio not do that? It was right when he was kind of a little bitch. He just was weird. Well, he's always been little. No, I know, but he was kind of cranky for a while. I honestly don't know it, John. Okay, so maybe it's a little harder, I thought. Let it out, though, because I might... The song's called The One You Love to Hate, where he and Bruce sing. If you haven't heard that before, you may want to go back. It's actually on Halford's album called Resurrection, but you may want to check it out because

01:36:13.700 --> 01:36:43.480
They probably sound the best that they'll ever sound in the rest of their careers on that album. I think I went on like XM. Wow, I figured you guys would have heard this. I figured that was a, all right. I've never heard this. Wow, okay. I'm shocked. Stay in my Wayne wheelhouse and then I can still probably. All right, well, this is an album cover question for you then. There's a famous politician that has graced two Iron Maiden covers in the past, and this includes,

01:36:45.520 --> 01:36:48.280
I knew you would know that but do you know the songs now

01:36:49.760 --> 01:36:52.440
would you say Margaret Thatcher yes she graces

01:36:53.000 --> 01:36:55.240
I can picture the covers one is

01:36:55.920 --> 01:36:57.860
are they ones off Killers right

01:36:59.100 --> 01:37:01.640
close it's off the first album it's off the

01:37:01.740 --> 01:37:03.040
first album okay so it's

01:37:03.780 --> 01:37:05.040
Prawler no

01:37:08.880 --> 01:37:10.720
I honestly don't know okay so it's

01:37:10.840 --> 01:37:12.900
Sanctuary I was gonna guess

01:37:13.640 --> 01:37:42.400
If you're not familiar with the cover, it's Eddie's actually standing over Margaret Thatcher on the street with a bloody knife in his hand. Which is, I think, why I confused it with the killer's thing. Yeah. Do I have to name the other one? The other one is actually she gets her revenge on Eddie. It's the Women in Uniform album cover. Yeah, yeah, right on. He's walking down the street with a couple of girls and she's on the side of a building waiting with a machine gun. I used to have that poster on my wall. All right, well, I'll call that a half win. Yeah, no, no, you were on target with that.

01:37:42.920 --> 01:38:12.860
Last one I'll give you. I don't know if you know this, but in the video Number of the Beast, do you remember the devil that's running around in the video? I do. While they're playing live, do you know who that devil is? It's one of two people. It's either Nico or... It's Nico. He was their drum tech and friend at the time. Yeah. And he plays the devil in the video. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Wait, who? Nico McBrain? Yes. He was actually their drum tech before he joined the band. It was in the band.

01:38:12.920 --> 01:38:42.880
When did he join? Peace of mind. Oh, no shit. Who was drumming before that? Clyburn. Yeah, Clyburn. He was in a band called Trust, and they did some shows together and stuff, so they all kind of knew him and all that kind of thing. But yeah, I don't remember where I heard that one, but good, this is what I was hoping for. You know that? I heard that first on that metal show. It was a question they asked Eddie Trunk. That might be how I got it. The only reason I guessed one of two people, because I

01:38:42.900 --> 01:39:12.880
I did know Nico did it once but I also know that at least once Rod Smallwood had to do it and or not Rod Smallwood who's the manager yeah it's him yeah the reason why I thought that might be a funny question asked is because now when you think back of it you can picture Nico doing that before you know he kind of had his oh dude totally and and without without the mask that's pretty much how he dresses on stage anyway all right

01:39:13.780 --> 01:39:40.040
All right. So I'm going to switch it up. It's not just straight trivia questions. I'm going to read you some lyrics. Oh, and you have to name the song and the album. And if possible, the year is released. I'll do my best. I might be able to close the phrase for you, but we'll see. All right. They had for dinner that night. Yes. And the engineer on the album. So the first one is if you kill me, it's self-defense.

01:39:42.920 --> 01:40:12.880
I call it vengeance it is it's off of peace of mind no no no it's off of damn it oh it's uh it's um the prisoner yes from number of the beast yes and I really have to name the year damn it you don't have to no yeah because I actually probably can't do what 82 83 you got 82 82

01:40:12.920 --> 01:40:14.300
Wow, that's...

01:40:14.300 --> 01:40:16.840
Well, I love this. I love this. Yeah, this is right in my way.

01:40:17.360 --> 01:40:17.580
Okay.

01:40:18.570 --> 01:40:19.980
The next one is...

01:40:20.470 --> 01:40:22.340
I count the heads of those unborn.

01:40:23.700 --> 01:40:24.420
That sounds familiar.

01:40:25.460 --> 01:40:27.020
This must be some late era.

01:40:30.980 --> 01:40:32.620
Is it off of Seventh Son?

01:40:33.360 --> 01:40:33.500
Yes.

01:40:33.690 --> 01:40:33.800
Hmm.

01:40:37.440 --> 01:40:38.320
It's Moonshile.

01:40:39.080 --> 01:40:39.160
Yep.

01:40:39.900 --> 01:40:40.660
Nailed it, man.

01:40:41.140 --> 01:40:41.820
God damn.

01:40:42.500 --> 01:41:10.980
I want to see your screen on your glasses. Yeah. Don't move. Hold on. Stay right there. There may be a few bands I know that I could do this better with than these guys. I got two more for you. As they sail into the sunset, they'll count the cost. Oh, I know that one. That is Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.

01:41:12.500 --> 01:41:24.280
I got to say

01:41:44.640 --> 01:42:10.880
I see the ghost of the navigator what album? Brave New World second song the year by chance? 2000 even bro. Yep. 2001. Good. I see the ghost of the navigators but they are lost as they sail into the sunset they'll count the cost. Best song on the album. First count. From the sea. I don't know about that. It's cool. Shut up John. All right.

01:42:12.520 --> 01:42:40.300
Shut the fuck up! These are getting progressively harder. That's fine. I'm loving it. And I think this one... I don't know if you're going to get this one. If it's Tail Gunner, I'm not. Tail Gunner. The preacher loses face with Christ. Yeah, I'm probably not going to get this. And I can read you three more lines to help you. Yeah, give me a couple more lines. Religion's cruel device is gone.

01:42:42.520 --> 01:43:12.300
Empty Flesh and Hollow Bones Make Packs of Love but Die Alone. Does anyone know this? Holy Smoke. I'm definitely not going to get this one. I want to say it's probably something up to answer death or some later thing. The Preacher Looses Face with Christ. Religion's Cruel Device is Gone. Empty Flesh and Hollow Bones Make Packs of Love but Die Alone. I like that.

01:43:14.040 --> 01:43:42.460
I'd have two guesses. One is it's something off of Seventh Son, I doubt it. And then the other one is some late era thing post Brave New World. It is late era. Okay. I'm not going to be as good as lyrics on those ones. Let's see, what is it? Starblind from Final Frontier, 2001. Ah, Final Frontier. Everybody got that in a million years. I really like that album. This is one of my favorite songs on that album. You did well, dude. You got a four. George, hit me hard. I am going to. Well, I don't know. Maybe I'm not.

01:43:44.300 --> 01:44:09.260
First one, this is probably the closest I have to a softball. What year was Iron Maiden formed? 1970. Does it include before they were called Iron Maiden? That I'm not sure. All I know is that this was the year the band was formed. That's a hard one, dude. It is in the 70s. Yeah, 70 for sure.

01:44:12.520 --> 01:44:42.100
I have to guess in, say, 1978. 75. Oh, 75. That was definitely before they were called Made Nothing. Probably. All right. What is Nico's real name? Fuck yeah. Is McBrain his real last name? I honestly don't know it. Michael Henry McBrain. Oh, never would have got that. Wow.

01:44:42.500 --> 01:45:12.420
That's a good one. A lot of Nico in this. I mean, you know, so far. Okay, I've got a couple more. The album artwork for Number of the Beast was originally intended for a single, not the album cover Number of the Beast. But Rod Smallwood decided it was too good to use for a single and saved it for the full album. What was the single that it was originally intended for? Which is not necessary.

01:45:12.520 --> 01:45:42.480
Not necessarily from the album. No, don't. Okay. You shouldn't have done that. Total Eclipse. Purgatory. Oh, really? Awesome. Okay, good. These are good ones. I like this. All right. Why did the band change the name of the song Dune and call it To Tame a Land? Wow. They're good questions, dude. I'm going to guess that...

01:45:42.520 --> 01:46:12.080
He was alive at the time. Herbert had a problem. He did. He hated heavy metal. He hated heavy metal and specifically hated Iron Maiden. And he threatened to sue if they used it. They tried to tell him that it would be a good promotion for the book. But he thought that rock music, heavy metal and Iron Maiden were an abomination. Well, he was wrong. Because of that song. Quite the opposite of them getting the rights to do the Prisoner, right? Yeah.

01:46:14.380 --> 01:46:41.140
That leads me into my last question. Who is number one? You are number six. Nobody knows who's number one. Exactly. All right. That was it. Okay, cool. That was fun. That was fun, man. I enjoyed that. Those are guys that I've read so many magazine articles, books, and videos about over the years that I didn't think you'd hit too much. I wouldn't know. That was a good one. Who was second in the lineup? That would be me.

01:46:42.300 --> 01:47:06.380
All right, what are you feeling like? I'm thinking next time we do Manowar. Oh, okay. I know a lot about Manowar. I just think I do. I'm going to warn you right now that I'm going to do, because I really enjoyed that, I'm going to do a Will Did and I'm going to come at you with some lyrics. Yeah, as long as it's, let's put up through an album. Let's call it up through,

01:47:12.300 --> 01:47:40.560
Kings of Metal? Yeah, sounds good. And so I'm going to, we're not starting now, but I still have to hit you with one because it's one of my favorite and most hilarious lyrics ever, and it's, I kill your face. Oh, yeah. Is that off of End of Glory Ride? It is. Yeah. First song, second side. Hatred. I always thought that was the funniest thing. I kill your face!

01:47:42.820 --> 01:47:51.300
All right. Okay, cool. All right. A little pre-action there. All right. Let's move on to our top five.

01:48:12.280 --> 01:48:42.260
I'm gonna tell you all about it right now. Considering that our last episode was the year-end episode, it was discussed that we should do the top five albums that we missed or didn't hear until after the year-end episode. So we're gonna do that. But before we get into that, after the episode came out, our friend, listener, and co-conspirator Mark got a hold of me. The franchise. The franchise. And he was

01:48:42.280 --> 01:49:10.780
a little distressed and disturbed by the fact that none of us had Power Trip on our lists. And John, at least, has already explained why he didn't put it on there because they dissed Rush. So he wanted to know what the fuck we were thinking by none of us putting it on there. So I think we all need to go through and explain why we didn't have Power Trip on our lists for Mark. I'll do it. I'll just tell you this. I don't think the record.

01:49:10.880 --> 01:49:39.480
I saw them live recently with somebody. And they were great live. But it doesn't translate on the record as good as it does live. I think they're a good band. I get it and everything. But there was something better about the vocals in person. Which actually still doesn't explain my not including the record. Except to say that I get that band better now that I've seen them live. Will, you have anything to add? I find that in general.

01:49:40.900 --> 01:50:10.860
of thrash bands that are trying to sound like the old school thrash bands just don't do a good enough job and this is solely because i grew up in that era and i a lot of times i just feel like the bands are trying to do the old school thrash just don't do it as good as the originals and i have i have a little bit of prejudice against the guys trying to do the throwback sound and i know it's just

01:50:10.880 --> 01:50:40.860
It's my own prejudice. It has nothing to do with how good the music is. Just a lot of times it's like, another band trying to do, trying to reinvent something that was perfect to begin with. And that's not 100%. I mean, I have the album. I like the album. I just sort of like, yeah, I mean, it's good. I like it. It's me. It's all right. It's all right. It's just, I just didn't, and

01:50:40.900 --> 01:50:41.420
is what it is.

01:50:41.970 --> 01:50:42.060
Okay.

01:50:42.280 --> 01:50:43.960
So, Will, let me ask you this question.

01:50:44.300 --> 01:50:49.880
Did you like the Summerlands and Eternal Champion albums more just because they're not thrash?

01:50:49.980 --> 01:50:51.020
They're just more straight-ahead metal?

01:50:52.260 --> 01:50:53.980
Because those are definitely throwback albums.

01:50:55.880 --> 01:50:58.020
I don't have any of them.

01:50:58.960 --> 01:50:59.080
Oh.

01:50:59.730 --> 01:50:59.820
Okay.

01:50:59.900 --> 01:51:01.440
So I can't ask you questions.

01:51:01.740 --> 01:51:04.960
For some reason, I thought you were going to get political on us and be like, I can't comment on it.

01:51:05.030 --> 01:51:05.680
No, no, no, no.

01:51:05.920 --> 01:51:07.800
I don't own any of them.

01:51:07.940 --> 01:51:09.620
I mean, I know it's Arthur's stuff.

01:51:09.880 --> 01:51:11.860
I just don't know.

01:51:13.120 --> 01:51:18.720
I so after Mark said this to me, I put on the album and I listened to it all the way through.

01:51:19.980 --> 01:51:22.900
And I was like, you know, the production is good.

01:51:23.240 --> 01:51:24.220
Props to Arthur on that.

01:51:26.900 --> 01:51:30.940
But I'm kind of back in what Will said, which is unusual, isn't it?

01:51:33.120 --> 01:51:34.180
I love when you get behind me.

01:51:34.520 --> 01:51:34.840
Yes.

01:51:37.160 --> 01:52:06.040
So as I was listening to it, I was trying to think of, you know, what do I have against it? I mean, I don't hate it. But it reminds me of two other bands, and both of those bands are bands that I'm like, they're all right, but they never grabbed me. And those two bands are Prong and Municipal Waste. I knew that was going to be one of them, dude. The vocals are very Municipal Waste, and Municipal Waste is very Nuclear Assault. There again, too, but another band that's a lot more fun to see live.

01:52:06.820 --> 01:52:35.300
Yeah, great band lies. And I got nothing against Municipal Waste. I've got all their albums, but they're not a band. They're a fun band, but they're not a band that I'm like, yeah, this is the greatest album of the year. And same with Prong. I've always had a passing fancy with Prong. I've seen them live a couple of times. I've got all their albums. I always buy them. But they've never been a band that I was like, man, they are so awesome.

01:52:35.380 --> 01:52:37.420
They're just a band that's solid

01:52:38.170 --> 01:52:39.260
And that's what I think of Power Trip

01:52:39.400 --> 01:52:41.060
They're a solid band, but they're not amazing

01:52:42.120 --> 01:52:42.940
You know what? They're perfect

01:52:43.420 --> 01:52:45.220
Power Trip and Municipal Ways are perfect

01:52:45.300 --> 01:52:46.240
If I was in high school

01:52:46.750 --> 01:52:48.120
And I didn't live through all the stuff we lived through

01:52:48.160 --> 01:52:48.980
I'd probably think they were great

01:52:49.060 --> 01:52:49.140
Yeah

01:52:50.140 --> 01:52:53.640
But given that it's so derivative of things

01:52:53.800 --> 01:52:55.320
That I've liked better in the past

01:52:56.560 --> 01:52:59.860
It doesn't move me to praise it now

01:53:00.000 --> 01:53:00.960
It's like, it's good, sure

01:53:01.480 --> 01:53:03.620
But it's not listworthy to me

01:53:04.180 --> 01:53:32.960
They're out of Texas, right? Yep. Yep. Yep. All right. Yep. Which will make sense why Arthur is involved. Because he's from Philly? Is he from Texas? I thought he was from Texas. No, he's in Philly, man. You should know that, Philly, Billy. He's from the same land of the Pennsylvania Springwater. Yingling? Chinese beer. Yingling.

01:53:33.640 --> 01:53:36.880
All right, let's get into R5. Let's start with John.

01:53:37.890 --> 01:54:02.420
Okay, so my list, just real quick to give some context to my list. Some of these are I got from you guys that I had heard of, didn't listen, or I only gave one listen to, or not enough listens. And then two of them I actually discovered completely after the podcast. One was released earlier in the year, and one actually just came out. So I'm putting it on there just because I like it that much.

01:54:02.480 --> 01:54:31.200
My list is very similar. Stuff I got from you guys and stuff that came out after. I learned it from you. Right. I learned about watching you, okay? So my first one is a band I discovered after the podcast. They released this album earlier in the year. They are an instrumental prog metal band from India. So this is going away out there. Whoa. Yeah. The band name is the Minerva Conduct, and that's the album title. And it's just straight ahead prog metal.

01:54:33.280 --> 01:55:02.180
I don't want to say they're genty, but they do have a little bit of that sound. But they're just, like I said, straight-head prog metal, just instrumental. I liked it. I thought it was cool. And I will give them props when I ordered the CD. They sent it out, and it got here faster than some CDs that come from Maryland or Virginia. So thank you guys for that. I appreciate that. Excellent. Will? Are we going like in, I guess we're doing this in order and going from five and whatnot?

01:55:02.200 --> 01:55:30.740
Not the usual. Yeah. All right. Mine's my order is not very strong, but Comrade. Diaspora. Nice. I started listening to that. And I was trying to look at some of the stuff that made high on other people's lists. And I'm like, well, why didn't I have it on my list? And I just never really listened to this album, but I was digging it. So I bought it. Well, dig in black. Who knew? Yeah. Well, it's actually a lot of things. I think. Yeah. Yeah. I spun that thing a lot.

01:55:30.800 --> 01:56:00.720
And that's the basis is black metal. I say that as he's wearing his Uthkiaru shirt. It's funny. I wore this shirt the other night at the, um, we had another metal show at Atlas with, um, Antichrist's machine and frontal coil and Torvo, which I need to talk about Torvo. You really should, we should have a little thing on here where you talk about the shows just, you know, upcoming. We have Iron Regan despise you, Cemetery Pissed,

01:56:00.800 --> 01:56:30.580
Left Cross are playing on Wednesday. And we got Conan, Ditch, Ditching the Delta, and Dagger Moon. Like, fucking Conan's playing my brewery. You got a bigger show coming at the beginning of February. We got The Skull. Yeah, playing all of their self-titled treble album. Yeah. No kidding. Jesus, dude. Hey, dude. And my fucking brewery. Yeah, you are. You're making it happen right now, dude. Yeah, Sea Sick Gladiator, Stonian Horde, and Backblast are playing.

01:56:30.780 --> 01:56:58.900
That'll be fun. George and I saw them. Yeah, it's a charity event on January 14th. We're raising money for a wildlife shelter in Maryland. Yeah, we saw Seasick Gladiator at Shadow Woods. Yeah, they were cool. Yeah, they were awesome. The fuck was I talking about? Your number five. Well, one of us has to pay attention. Yeah. I forget where I was going, though. It's kind of a weird choice because it's actually on my list.

01:57:00.800 --> 01:57:29.700
So, but I think it'll sort of speak for itself when I say it. My first two, my first one is on my list. My first one, my second one should have been. The first one is Morbid Angel. I wish I'd had more time with that record to more properly place it where, in a more thoughtful place on my list. So, even though I'd heard it, it made my list, I wish I'd had more time. It was out for 24 hours. Yeah, come on, those are 24 whole hours. You can listen to it at least 23 times. Yeah. When you guys should have been honing in the rest of your list, you're like,

01:57:30.800 --> 01:57:33.360
to my list. Yeah, something new is happening. No good.

01:57:34.800 --> 01:58:00.140
My number five is one that's way out of left field. I found it on another, you know, at the end of the year, you know, we go through everybody else's lists, and I found it on somebody's list. And for some reason, I thought this band was from Finland, but actually they're from Philly. And they're called Cleric, and the album is called Retro Causal. It's their second album, and it is just avant-garde insanity. It is.

01:58:00.160 --> 01:58:28.380
It's crazy. It's crazy. It's so crazy that I had to list it because it's not an easy listen, but it is good. Yeah. Oh, so I remember where I was going with that. You guys mentioned my Ukiyaru shirt. Oh, right. So when I was at the show the other night, Metal Chris, my buddy from DCHeavyMetal.com, was also wearing his Ukiyaru shirt. We took a picture together, and he said to me,

01:58:30.160 --> 01:58:58.100
"Black Metal Shirt You Own." I'm like, "I think you're right." Yeah. Sorry, that's where I was going with that. Oh, worth hearing. We're expanding Will's horizons here. Soon, he will like more Black Metal than Death Metal. Not likely, but yeah. Anywho. All right, John, back for four. So, hopefully I won't say their name wrong. I've listened to this album once before. I went back to it and I liked it quite a bit.

01:59:00.440 --> 01:59:29.800
A Band Called Halitar. Hopefully I'm saying that right. No Stars Upon the Bridge. Yeah. It's a Doom band. It's a Doom from Swallow the Sun. Swallow the Sun and Trees of Eternity. And it's kind of, I wouldn't say it's a follow up to Trees of the Eternity, but it's kind of, it's a spiritual follow up to that because of his, I think it was his wife that had passed away. It's kind of a painful list now that you know that story. And it has the lead singer from Amorphous on it. So, very cool.

01:59:30.380 --> 02:00:00.040
stuff. Yeah, that's a good album. All right, Will? My number four, Sunless, Baraka. And I'm not sure why this was not on my list, because I had it the whole time. And I'm pretty sure John was the one who told me about this. And was it on your list, John? It is. It's not the first time you listen to it. I don't think it's an easy listen, but you listen to it a couple of times. It all starts to kind of make sense. Yeah. And then Dad of Northern Darkness had on his list. So what I was trying to do is just go through other people's lists and like, oh, what what did they have? And I didn't.

02:00:01.380 --> 02:00:29.720
I didn't pay enough attention to. I've had it for a long time. I listened to it a couple times. I was like, all right. But now that I'm listening again, I'm like, this should have made my list. Yeah, it's a good album. Yeah. All right, Jay. This one, I think I made a honorable mention. And if I had listened to it a little bit more, I would have been on my list. Incantation and Profane Nexus. Oh, yeah.

02:00:30.160 --> 02:00:58.480
It's good. It's really good. And if I had just spent a little more time with it, I'd listen to it like twice and I think I just got lost in the mix. Yeah, it's like the pace of the record and all the songs, it's very much in that, is this death metal or is this death doom metal? It's like right in that middle of my wheelhouse. I really liked it. It keeps you guessing. Yeah, and you should try the mead. Yeah. No, no, no, it's I have it written down. I remember how much you guys liked it.

02:01:00.180 --> 02:01:30.140
or Brimminghorn Meadery. Hey, Will. Just a little heads up. I've been talking with the guys at Dominion about maybe possibly getting that meadery on their shelves. Dude. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I told them I said they need to get this because they do carry mead. I have one more bottle of it, and I'm saving it to do a very thorough brew heads on, which just incidentally, last night, I finally mark L, mark with a C, L, all the way up in

02:01:31.060 --> 02:02:00.140
I'm pretty sure he's in Wisconsin sent me a bottle of the Mastodon Crack the Sky from Three Floyds. It's a coffee Imperial Stout. And the beer was phenomenal. And so I was typing this up last night and I was listening to Crack the Sky. And I don't know if it's because the newer Mastodon is so terrible that when you go back to Blood Mountain and Crack the Sky, I like them more. But I was like, man, this is

02:02:00.160 --> 02:02:28.340
It's a pretty good album. Actually, I just think they are just well-written albums, even if it is a change of departure for their sound. It's just a better album. It is, but I actually, you know what? But you're right, Will. I agree. I think one of the big differences is I think Brent Hines was writing more and Bill Kelleher is writing more now. I think that's one of the big differences. But anyway, Crack the Sky is awesome. Yeah, so Sky was a name of Rob. There's another beer, too, another one for Emperor of the Sand, which means it probably sucks. Yeah.

02:02:30.580 --> 02:02:31.280
Light of America.

02:02:31.280 --> 02:02:33.360
But there is. There's a new one that just came out. I forget what it's called.

02:02:34.040 --> 02:02:42.640
But the album Crack the Skies, Bram Naylor's sister at 14 committed suicide. Her name was Sky. S-K-Y-E.

02:02:43.320 --> 02:02:46.780
And so the album is dedicated to her. The song is dedicated to her.

02:02:46.900 --> 02:02:53.720
And the beer was released to raise proceeds for suicide prevention and awareness and stuff.

02:02:54.580 --> 02:02:57.740
So it's going to be very depressing brew heads when I come.

02:02:59.760 --> 02:03:27.560
I say this, I'm a broken record, and I say this every freaking episode. I'm working on like 10 different ones. Oh, sure. So keep an eye out for Will's biannual brew heads. Hey, how much are you fucking assholes right now? Not a damn thing. Exactly. Wow. Language. My kids are finally out of the room. Here, Mom. Jay. Is it me again already? No, I didn't.

02:03:27.780 --> 02:03:57.680
Oh, you did? Sorry. For some reason, I thought that was Will because he was talking. All right. I guess that means it's me. My number four is one that John gave me for my birthday. Thank you, John. Hive, and the album is... How do you pronounce that, John? It's Hive. Because I don't know. It's like I-A-T-O-N. I don't know, like Jotun? Maybe it's a Yotun? I don't know.

02:03:57.900 --> 02:04:27.760
Yanni, help! Finish black metal. You may want to do that, George. You may want to contact him and say, hey, can you say this? And then send me the file back so I can insert. Jay is my bitch. I just printed up with him on Facebook, too, so he's going to be glad. Yeah, he told me that he created a Facebook account just so that he could like our page and drive millions

02:04:27.900 --> 02:04:28.920
of views to our page.

02:04:30.840 --> 02:04:34.080
I don't know if you noticed this, but we've had kind of an uptick recently on likes.

02:04:36.300 --> 02:04:37.180
It's all Yanni, man.

02:04:38.200 --> 02:04:38.460
Hey.

02:04:39.160 --> 02:04:40.040
Jerking the penis.

02:04:43.820 --> 02:04:44.280
All right.

02:04:45.280 --> 02:04:47.620
Yeah, so we're back to John again for number three.

02:04:49.240 --> 02:04:53.360
So Jay will get the majority of the props, but George, you'll get some.

02:04:53.880 --> 02:05:23.720
Will, unfortunately, I can't remember what you said about this album, so I apologize if I don't give you props also for it. I felt I had to have this album just for the cover alone. There was no other reason not to have this album. That's Bellwitch, Mirror Reaper. I've gone back and gave it a proper listen and was like, okay, this is kind of cool. I went back again. I was like, okay, this may not be my favorite style, you know, funeral death, but it's worth having because of what they tried to do.

02:05:24.540 --> 02:05:53.840
The whole package of why the album came out, I felt I had to have it. So I do like that album a lot more now. I went and saw them and they played it. And I also got a kick-ass hoodie with the album cover on the back. So nice. It was so worth going. I think that hoodie would be better than the music. I mean, I liked it. I've warmed to it myself, just like John. I've warmed to it. And it made my list. Yeah, it probably wouldn't still make my list, but I,

02:05:53.900 --> 02:06:23.840
I appreciate it for what it is. You know, and I think sometimes that goes a lot farther than just liking the music. Now, however, if they commit that much more to it next time, I'm getting off the train. I'm going to need some 20 minute songs on the next album. It's like, man, I just wish these songs were just 20 minutes long. All right. My number three, Jay, you'll like this one. Electric Wizard, Wizard, Bloody Wizard. I love Electric Wizard.

02:06:24.720 --> 02:06:53.860
And maybe it's just because the last album wasn't the previous album. The penultimate album was not that great. So I never I never I never even bought this album. I kind of listened to it, you know, the previews on iTunes. And then so what, two or three days ago, I downloaded it. And I'm digging it. It's pretty good. It's good. Listen. Yeah, I like it. No comment. Fair enough. That brings us to me. I sent this to the you guys recently or sent it to one of the

02:06:56.880 --> 02:06:58.740
I think George will like it most

02:06:59.660 --> 02:07:02.000
will will next and then John maybe less but I think

02:07:02.000 --> 02:07:06.380
you all might like it death cult cult of the goat and this records cool I haven't even had a chance

02:07:06.420 --> 02:07:11.100
to listen to it yet but I do remember you sending that it's like well-produced black metal and I mean

02:07:11.140 --> 02:07:15.340
like literally clearly produced but it has got a lot of cool hooks in it they throw some weird

02:07:15.560 --> 02:07:22.620
instrumentation here and there but just good riffs too and it's a little bit slight it's not I that's

02:07:22.640 --> 02:07:51.900
I could do, but it's a great record. I'll be getting that one on vinyl. And I wish it had come out before the final episode would have been on my list, I believe. Yeah, I think it came out like December 15th, which is like two weeks after we recorded. All right, my number three. This is another one that I had not even heard of, and I found it on somebody else's list somewhere. The band is called Sarcasm, and the album is called Within the Sphere of Ethereal Minds. It's the second album from a Swedish death metal band.

02:07:51.960 --> 02:08:21.940
And it's pretty good. So, you know, check it out. Cool. Hey, back to John. Hopefully I get some of my credibility back with Will on this one. I have a long way to go. I know that. A long way to go. But I believe Will will appreciate this. I know Jay will, and I know Matt will. And George, I don't know why you haven't mentioned this yet, but I went back and I listened to

02:08:23.460 --> 02:08:51.880
and fucking love it. It is. It's kind of got a cool old school death metal vibe, but it with a modern touch. I just hated that album cover. I just couldn't stand it. And I judged the book by its cover and went back and listened because I saw it on so many lists. I was like, damn, I wish I would have listened to this. That probably would have made my list this year. Yeah. Trying to sacrifice a little baby on there, which as the only member of this podcast who has children, it kind of will, you know, rubs you the wrong way.

02:08:51.980 --> 02:09:21.420
But hey, don't do the book by its cover. Maybe they were trying to stab an animal that was attacking the baby. They're like, this is my baby. Yeah, yeah. Less metal, but still cool. Yeah. But anyway, that's a very cool album. And they're out from Jay's neighborhood out that way. Yeah, I must have seen them ten times. Every time a black metal band or death metal comes, they open for them. And I really focused on them one night when I was watching them. I was like, man, these guys are great.

02:09:21.980 --> 02:09:51.280
And it was not long thereafter that the record came out. So I was pretty hyped when it came out in the first place. Very cool album. Will? My number two, John will be happy. Hypergiant, Father Sky. This would at least at the very minimum have been an honorable mention. Maybe in the upper tier of my list. Upper tier being in the 20s or the teens or something. But I'm really digging this. Yeah, I figured you would like to cool out.

02:09:51.980 --> 02:10:21.820
I know you guys mentioned stuff and then it's like if I don't write it down I forget about it and then yeah. Hypergiant. Yeah whenever I put out suggestions I pretty much assume that nobody's going to listen to it. No no no we do. Okay I pretty much assume that you're going to listen to it not like it. It depends. Like if I'm at work and I'm in a meeting there's like you know what I mean if it catches me at the right time then I'm like oh yeah I'm going to totally dive into this. Yeah. Then if there's five suggestions from everybody then it's like there's a

02:10:21.960 --> 02:10:25.160
I'm as guilty of it as anybody.

02:10:27.200 --> 02:10:27.920
My understanding

02:10:28.280 --> 02:10:29.500
that my number two has,

02:10:29.950 --> 02:10:31.140
at least so I've read, has

02:10:31.940 --> 02:10:34.040
some amounts of controversy around it, which is weird

02:10:34.120 --> 02:10:36.120
for me. I mean, people kind of consider it maybe a little

02:10:36.170 --> 02:10:37.960
too hardcore or something, but I don't hear that when

02:10:38.010 --> 02:10:39.800
I hear it, and I don't know anything about this band.

02:10:40.220 --> 02:10:41.180
It's been around for a long time.

02:10:41.960 --> 02:10:44.000
This record is so heavy and

02:10:44.180 --> 02:10:45.920
so good, and if it's a hardcore

02:10:46.170 --> 02:10:47.940
vocal, I can't tell. To me, it sounds more like Matt

02:10:48.060 --> 02:10:49.840
Pike or something. Anyway, it's a band called

02:10:50.020 --> 02:10:51.940
Integrity, a record called Howling

02:10:51.960 --> 02:11:20.660
Before the Nightmare Shall Consume. I dig this, man. No comment. Really? You're into the controversy, George? I don't like hardcore. It doesn't strike me as a hardcore record. It does me. The vocals are very hardcore. At least I think so. It's heavy. I haven't really listened to the new album, but in the past it's been a hardcore album. I understand that I have nothing else to go on. I don't even know these guys existed until I saw this on somebody's list. Cool. Maybe I should listen to it.

02:11:21.960 --> 02:11:51.640
Yeah, we'll give it a shot. See what you think. All right. My number two just snuck all the way up to number two. I only heard it like two days ago. No. No, yeah, two days ago. Neutrino told me about this album. And honestly, I think maybe Greg might have or one of those guys might have suggested this over Twitter. The band, I don't know how to pronounce it,

02:11:51.940 --> 02:12:20.840
I-P-E-R-Y-T. And the album is called The Patchwork Gehinom. G-E-H-I-N-N-O-M. It's the third album from a Polish industrial black death band. And I think Will probably had it at Polish. Because pretty much everything coming out of Poland these days is coming up aces. Yeah, they've been treating us right.

02:12:21.580 --> 02:12:51.560
What's the name of the record, George? Say the name of the record again. They can't. The Patchwork. Okay, I know that helps. I'll just look for the one I can't pronounce. But it's pretty awesome. It's on Bandcamp. It's good. Check it out. Back to John for number one. Okay, so surprisingly, this is my number one. This literally just came out a couple weeks ago, so this is long past the podcast. I don't know if it's an EP or full length, because it's only about 32 minutes long, but

02:12:52.480 --> 02:13:21.400
I don't know if Will would dig this. Jay, you might. George, you might. It's a post-black metal band. They call themselves a post-black metal band. They have a lot of progressive black metal going too, I guess. But not like enslaved type stuff. But anyway, and I hope I say this right. I had to ask Jen because I don't speak German because they're from Germany. But the band's name is Osservelt. And the album's called Transitions. And this, just on the first listen, I got kind of blown away.

02:13:21.600 --> 02:13:51.560
I buy this and I'm really looking forward to more from these guys they have another earlier release which is an EP from a couple years ago but this one literally just came out a couple days ago and it's easily would have made my list even at 32 minutes there's not even a question about it can you spell it now it's Acervelt but the problem is and I can't pronounce the letter it's got a it's got like a B shaped thing that translates into S yeah it's a double S

02:13:51.580 --> 02:14:18.240
Yeah. Oh, it's an asset. I think it's called. Anyway, Jay, it's on my band camp if you're interested. That helps. That helps a lot. Okay. But the production on this, you know, for a band that's only got two short releases, it's just outstanding. I want to hear this. So, yeah, I liked it. I'm curious to see what you guys think. But again, they call themselves post-black metal, but it's not like the type of music that makes Will almost pee in his pants laughing.

02:14:20.620 --> 02:14:50.560
And it's not like enslaved type progressive metal. It's in between some of that. So I'm just curious what you guys think. Cool. Cool cover. Yeah, it's actually that's right now. Send it to us in the messenger and yeah, take a look. And Jay, that's what's funny. The cover is what caught me. I'm going to buy it right now. It looks good. Okay, cool. Will. My number one, Corrosion Conformity. No cross, no crown. Came out. Came out after.

02:14:50.620 --> 02:15:20.160
Actually, it's not up until next week. It'll actually be this year, but nevertheless. Yeah, I guess. We've had the promo for a while, but I really love it. It's returned to form from the old blind, arms of God, deliverance kind of days. So, I'm digging it. I love it. Cool. A record that absolutely would have made my list, and I don't know. These guys have been around. They've got like 30 records. I don't know anything about them. Don't care anything else.

02:15:20.200 --> 02:15:50.160
All I know is I like this record. And it's that Circle Terminal. I dig this thing. It's a great record. I really like it. And it's like they go from doing these like riffs that could have been on a Stooges album to just this big swirly mixed up kind of jammy stuff to some death vocals and stuff here and there. It's great. I love it, man. And it's totally ear catching every bit of it for me. So Jay, I listened to it and I thought it was cool. And I then had to put it aside because I don't like

02:15:50.180 --> 02:16:20.160
hearing bands I like that I'm gonna have to buy a lot of music to. And I looked I thought okay they have like two or three albums I might just jump all over this. I was like oh man. No. I'm not buying 35 albums to catch up with these guys. Hell no. They're an experimental band though and so my take on the 35 records thing is they just never push the edit button and for whatever reason this 45 minutes is captivating so I'm willing to bet they have stuff that we would not be interested in. But this record

02:16:20.200 --> 02:16:21.220
resonates with me.

02:16:21.400 --> 02:16:22.160
So, but I agree with you.

02:16:22.220 --> 02:16:25.140
I'm not, I'm not even going to try to find out what their deal is.

02:16:25.300 --> 02:16:26.260
It's like, how do they do a set list?

02:16:26.510 --> 02:16:27.640
Well, they played an old set list.

02:16:27.740 --> 02:16:28.160
What'd they play?

02:16:28.510 --> 02:16:33.980
They played some stuff from their 14th album, their 23rd album, you know, even got

02:16:34.090 --> 02:16:36.280
some of their stuff from their, you know, eighth album.

02:16:36.980 --> 02:16:37.160
Yeah.

02:16:37.590 --> 02:16:39.040
No, but that said, I bought this on vinyl.

02:16:39.219 --> 02:16:40.160
I've listened to it a bunch.

02:16:40.380 --> 02:16:41.019
It's great.

02:16:41.540 --> 02:16:41.599
Yeah.

02:16:42.120 --> 02:16:42.219
Cool.

02:16:43.559 --> 02:16:49.059
My number one, it's the first album from a German death metal band that I believe was

02:16:49.240 --> 02:16:50.080
on John's list.

02:16:51.859 --> 02:16:53.099
Veningum, Trance of Death.

02:16:54.099 --> 02:16:54.480
Oh, yeah.

02:16:56.199 --> 02:16:57.900
I thought that was on your list, I guess.

02:16:58.639 --> 02:16:59.400
No, I got that.

02:16:59.660 --> 02:17:01.599
It is on my list, but I got it from Jay originally.

02:17:02.340 --> 02:17:02.559
Yeah.

02:17:02.809 --> 02:17:02.920
Yeah.

02:17:03.240 --> 02:17:04.260
That helped me so good.

02:17:04.530 --> 02:17:04.639
Yeah.

02:17:04.940 --> 02:17:07.980
I mean, I dropped the ball on this one.

02:17:08.160 --> 02:17:08.920
I knew of it.

02:17:09.030 --> 02:17:12.599
I had it on my phone for probably as long as it was out.

02:17:13.099 --> 02:17:17.780
I listened to bits and pieces of it, but I never connected with it.

02:17:17.809 --> 02:17:19.740
And so I missed the boat.

02:17:20.559 --> 02:17:49.780
I think you have to listen to that all the way through one time. You do, yeah. To put the pieces together, and then it just all falls into place, I think. That's the only way it will work for you. Yeah, and then you can pick it apart from there after you've got it, but oh man, I love that album. I don't know about anybody else, but I've got two honorable mentions. Anybody? Anybody? I didn't put anything. No. No. Left blind. No. All right. My two honorable mentions, The Ominous Circle, Appalling Ascension. The first album from a Portuguese

02:17:49.840 --> 02:18:17.660
G's Black Death Band. I believe that was on Matt's list. Is that an EP? I don't think so. I don't think so. In fact, I think this next one was on Matt's list as well. Yellow Eyes, Immersion Trench Reverie. Fourth album from a New York City black metal band. And I really like the music. I kind of wrote them off on their last album because the vocals are really screechy.

02:18:18.500 --> 02:18:48.420
And certain screechy vocals hit this frequency that just is like nails on the chalkboard for me. Yeah, it's called Black Mountain. You know, not all of them. And it was not quite as prevalent on this album, so I was able to listen to it and kind of dig it. But, you know. You know what killed it for me on this album? I went back and listened, and man, those drums are just fucking driving me nuts. It's just, I wasn't digging. It just was not sitting well with me, so.

02:18:48.480 --> 02:19:00.400
Okay. Just the way they sound. Not the playing, the sound. It just didn't resonate, so I didn't like it. All right. We're in the home stretch. What are we listening to?

02:19:24.341 --> 02:19:48.099
Okay, so again, I mentioned that Asservelt, Transitions, really, really like that. Another band I just discovered, released just a couple years ago, it's called Virion, I think is how you say it, it's Geo. Another kind of black metal-ish, kind of posty, proggy, whatever you want to call it.

02:19:48.480 --> 02:20:17.820
And then the rest of these are all older albums. I went on kind of a Doom binge recently. I wanted to switch up because I've been kind of down on Doom and I've forgotten all these albums that I love so much and some that I had just gotten for the first time. I just picked up Shape of Despair's Angels of Distress. It's a very, very cool album. And I never listened to this album before, but I see it on every greatest Doom albums of all times. And it's a recent album or in the last few years.

02:20:17.840 --> 02:20:18.940
And that's warnings

02:20:19.560 --> 02:20:21.980
Watching From a Distance. That just got a proper

02:20:22.360 --> 02:20:24.060
release on Bandcamp.

02:20:24.650 --> 02:20:26.180
So I picked it up. I figured I

02:20:26.250 --> 02:20:27.740
might as well have it. And it's not bad.

02:20:27.930 --> 02:20:30.100
His vocals are a little left to be desired,

02:20:30.240 --> 02:20:31.460
but the music's still pretty cool, though.

02:20:31.700 --> 02:20:33.660
Can you send that to us on the Messenger thing?

02:20:33.920 --> 02:20:35.480
Yeah, I'll send that out there, too.

02:20:36.580 --> 02:20:38.700
And then these are all

02:20:39.319 --> 02:20:40.500
bands that I love

02:20:42.379 --> 02:20:44.240
from years minus one.

02:20:44.660 --> 02:20:46.400
But Anathema is a Silent Enigma.

02:20:46.550 --> 02:20:47.520
I went back and spun again.

02:20:47.640 --> 02:21:13.800
And that's just, that's a great, probably their heaviest last record. That's over 20 years old now. I don't know if Jay and Will would know this. I'm pretty sure George knows this one. The Third and the Mortal, Tears Layed in Earth, which is a very cool, different type of doom metal album. And then Draconian's Arcane Rain Fell. Cool. So very, and then George got me into, is it Doom VS? Is that how you say my name?

02:21:17.660 --> 02:21:47.160
was a new album, but it was actually a reissue of the 2006 album, Aeternum Veil. And I was glad to drop that off because I've never known how to say that. It's like doom colon VS. What is that? I don't know. That's what I, in my head I say doom versus. But I checked them out a little bit, especially the one you told me to, and they're cool. Doomy, funeral doom, kind of death doom all mixed into one bag. Yeah.

02:21:47.660 --> 02:22:17.620
I checked it out too because it was on the list and I liked it. Yeah, it's cool stuff. That's it. It's been a doomy. It's fit the weather. It's been very doomy around. The doldrums of January. Yeah. I know people are listening to this in some other super cold place like fucking Canada. My sister in Norway has gotten like five feet of snow already. Yeah, I mean there's not much snow here but I think for the little dusting of snow we got it hasn't melted here in the

02:22:17.660 --> 02:22:47.560
D.C. area and it's been pretty much 9 degrees and I think it got up to a balmy 20 degrees today. But it's supposed to get really warm the rest of the week. Yeah. When I say really warm, it's supposed to get up to the 40s. I think 50s in a couple days. We might actually have some really nice days. I know. That's when everybody's going to get sick because it's going to get warm and then cold again. Yeah. Yeah. Which does not make you sick. Only germs make you sick. No, but people will come out, mingle, get each other sick.

02:22:47.660 --> 02:23:17.540
and then go back inside. Yes. We had an earthquake, if that counts. Everyone's just getting sick. We've all got the earthquake flu. I don't have a long list. I've still been listening to a lot of the Perihelian Ship when I'm at work. It's like a great album just to listen to when I'm working. Because I now have a record player, so I can do new vinyl. Yay! Yay! Welcome to the 1970s.

02:23:19.520 --> 02:23:47.580
I got Paul Bearer Foundations of Burning, which is one of my favorite records. I find that when I'm looking for stuff to get on vinyl, it's just all doom because the record player is in sort of like the sunroom. Basically, it's on the second floor. It's not in some man cave or anything, so I'm not going to be listening to anything crazy. So if I'm making dinner or we just get home, I put a record on, it's going to be something appropriate that the kids are not going to.

02:23:47.660 --> 02:24:15.900
or my wife is not going to kill me over. So I've been buying a lot of Doom records. La Black Sabbath and stuff. My buddies in Borracho came out with a new album, which is really just a compilation album of all their splits and seven inches and stuff called Riffography or Riffography, I guess. You got it right the first time. Yeah. So that's really awesome. I'm playing that. The new Temple of Void.

02:24:17.660 --> 02:24:47.440
cover of Celtic Frost, Monotheist, Os, Abysmi, Veldath, which led me to listen to a lot more of Monotheist, Celtic Frost, Monotheist. Are you from Boston? Celtic Frost, whatever. Celtic. I call it Celtic. Didn't you see George gyrating there as you were saying that? Well, he was just waiting for that moment to break in. Dude, for what it's worth, Tom Warrior.

02:24:47.640 --> 02:25:13.900
I have heard him say Celtic. Well, he's got it wrong, too. He's saying it wrong. That guy. Tom, I don't mean to stop you there, buddy. Your band is pronounced Celtic. There were no Celts. That actually is a true... That's kind of like they were the Celts. Exactly. As much as I love Boston, get it right.

02:25:17.660 --> 02:25:19.380
And of course,

02:25:19.670 --> 02:25:23.120
because I have a record player and my wife and my children have more records than I do,

02:25:23.660 --> 02:25:25.300
I've been listening to a lot of the Moana soundtrack,

02:25:25.430 --> 02:25:26.400
a lot of Sing soundtrack,

02:25:26.730 --> 02:25:28.220
and lots and lots of Adele.

02:25:28.380 --> 02:25:28.600
Hey,

02:25:28.690 --> 02:25:29.500
I got Adele vinyl.

02:25:30.300 --> 02:25:31.440
It's my wife's vinyl.

02:25:31.540 --> 02:25:31.920
Mine too.

02:25:32.420 --> 02:25:32.560
Hey,

02:25:32.660 --> 02:25:32.740
Will,

02:25:32.790 --> 02:25:37.540
we're going to have to go on like a man date over to some vinyl places and get some records for you.

02:25:37.860 --> 02:25:38.900
That's why I asked the other day.

02:25:39.819 --> 02:25:43.280
We'll make a trip up to Vinyl Altar when we go to Decibel Fest.

02:25:43.600 --> 02:25:43.760
Yeah,

02:25:43.950 --> 02:25:44.200
we will.

02:25:44.200 --> 02:25:44.460
There you go.

02:25:45.420 --> 02:26:15.400
Mine has probably you could just say the stuff that I just kind of mentioned now sort of late year stuff I've been checking out the new stuff in the box corrosion of conformity the Visegoth I have listened to I'm really liking that death call record I mentioned and then I'm going to do just a mini vinyl recent gets because I'm listening to all these I got wizard bloody wizard I just got Jethro Tull's living in the past found a super cheap copy and had that on this morning got a venom I'm klein knock music record store day live album

02:26:15.440 --> 02:26:45.400
Blood Vinyl Cool Thing. Alice Cooper, The Alice Cooper Show, Cormorant, Diaspora, Sog 2. I got King Goat's Conduit in the mail recently. That's cool on vinyl. Circle Terminal on vinyl. And then I am not afraid to admit that having gone to Tucson recently and sort of revisiting some of the western parts of the United States as in the old western parts, I drove home and listened to a whole bunch of Dwight Yeo come on the way home. I love Dwight Yeo. Nice. I don't have a long list, not compared to my normal

02:26:48.239 --> 02:27:14.460
So, you know, stay tuned. I was down here in the bar pulling a beer about a week or so ago, and my eye happened across one of the empty bottles from 1349, and that made me go, oh yeah, I gotta listen to some of that. So I listened to their last album, Massive Cauldron of Chaos, which that led me to one of their early albums, Beyond the Apocalypse.

02:27:18.619 --> 02:27:41.940
I picked up the new Ape Cave album that just released called Language of the Earth. They're a Portland, Oregon, sludge doom band. It's okay. I think I might have liked their first album a little better, but I haven't listened to it enough yet to make that a permanent decision. There's a band called Condor from Norway. They're a black thrash band.

02:27:47.319 --> 02:28:13.940
On Jay's recommendation, I listened to Death Cult, Cult of the Goat. Keith D. from Arctic Sleep and Unearthed Elf was kind enough to mail me an extra CD he had of Gravedigger's Return of the Reaper. And I listened to that and was like, yeah, this is actually pretty good. I've never been a huge Gravedigger fan, but I will say when I saw them at Valken last year, they fucking tore it up. So I listened to it and I dug it.

02:28:14.000 --> 02:28:43.940
So I was also listening to their latest album, Healed by Metal. This next one, I was telling the guys I had a gender confusion moment. The band called Greta Van Fleet. Okay, you know, sounds like a girl's name. Oh, no, they're good. I heard them on the radio, and it was the last song on the album, which is like Black Smoke something or other, Black Smoke Rises or something like that. And it sounded, I was like,

02:28:44.000 --> 02:28:50.540
like wow she sounds a lot like ann wilson from heart because it was very very ann wilson-ish but

02:28:51.459 --> 02:28:56.880
uh so i went home and i looked him up and i was like wait it's a dude it's a dude and after

02:28:57.120 --> 02:29:02.420
listening to the album it's other than the last song it is not heart the rest of the album is total

02:29:02.580 --> 02:29:08.860
zeppelin led zeppelin without a doubt they are so somebody at work told me about this and i checked

02:29:08.880 --> 02:29:38.261
them out and like wow they sound exactly like led zeppelin like if someone didn't tell you it was led it was like hey here's some lost tapes of led zeppelin you probably wouldn't know the difference but if you listen to that last song he sings really high and the phrasing is very ann wilson and so i was a little confused well i just listened to this and i hear it already george but also if you've never heard heart do battle of evermore you're messing up yeah so there you go

02:29:39.341 --> 02:30:08.220
Next, we have Livid, Beneath This Shroud, The Earthy Roads. This is the first album of Sludgy Doom from Minneapolis, Minnesota. It's good stuff. Next, I took one for the team and I listened to the new Machine Head album, Catharsis. I should specify, I listened to half of Catharsis. And if you've seen the news, Decibel's review of the album has been, you know,

02:30:08.280 --> 02:30:11.460
It kind of irked Rob Flynn

02:30:12.240 --> 02:30:15.380
because they give ratings like 1 through 10

02:30:15.560 --> 02:30:19.440
and their rating was like the icon of a guy shrugging

02:30:21.761 --> 02:30:23.460
Didn't even get a rating

02:30:23.940 --> 02:30:25.260
Not even a zero

02:30:25.620 --> 02:30:28.360
They eviscerated this album and I cannot agree more

02:30:28.540 --> 02:30:30.920
This is an absolutely terrible album

02:30:31.200 --> 02:30:35.841
Not since St. Anger has something gone off the rails so badly

02:30:36.859 --> 02:31:05.480
So I listened to it briefly yesterday or today. And I have to say, I'm not sure what everyone is so up in arms about. Because to me, it just sounds like a Machine Head album. But I'm not a big Machine Head fan. This is more like middle era rap rock. Okay. I mean, first I was like, oh, this sounds like Slipknot. But then I was like... Right. So it had a very heavy Slipknot sort of vibe to it. You're 100% right. And then it sounded like Korn.

02:31:06.160 --> 02:31:34.860
And then, like in the middle of the album, there's a song, and Decibel pointed this out, and I have to agree, it sounds like the Boston punk band Dropkick Murphys. And it's just... All these bands are not my favorite. I like Dropkick Murphys to an extent, but they're not really a Slipknot fan, not a Korn fan. It's like they stepped into a time machine and said,

02:31:34.880 --> 02:32:04.540
Let's make the shittiest album from the 90s we can possibly make. You know, I'm going to agree with you, though, George. Above all other things you've said so far, you took one for the team. Because I have no interest in hearing it. I've heard. I'm convinced. If I listen to the second half of the album, it's only to laugh at. Because it couldn't possibly redeem itself. At this point, has Machine Head put out more bad albums or good albums? Bad. More bad, I say. It's starting to add up. Yeah, you know, it's one thing when you go a certain direction and you make a mistake.

02:32:04.900 --> 02:32:34.840
and you course correct and things are better. A lot of bands have done that. Yep, a lot of bands in the 90s. But to do it twice? No. Well, you guys know I'm not a big fan, but what really kind of, not irked me, but just kind of annoyed me was his response to the review. So you get a negative review and your response is to tell them to go fuck themselves. Yeah. You know, okay, fine. Now you've just made yourself look even, put yourself more into it.

02:32:34.880 --> 02:32:38.280
He's not been doing himself any favors in the press the last few years.

02:32:39.440 --> 02:32:39.700
No.

02:32:40.090 --> 02:32:41.200
I think he's bitter right now.

02:32:41.450 --> 02:32:46.440
I saw something with him, some interview with him a while back, and he went through some financial troubles.

02:32:46.850 --> 02:32:47.640
He lost his house.

02:32:47.790 --> 02:32:51.260
He lost two houses, and he had a house, then they lost that, and then he had another house.

02:32:51.690 --> 02:32:56.660
And I know he's renting now and stuff, and I think he might be in this sort of like, fucking music business is not doing me right place.

02:32:56.820 --> 02:32:57.200
I don't know.

02:32:57.330 --> 02:32:58.580
Not that they would have made a revenge record.

02:32:58.580 --> 02:33:00.120
Why don't you do the music business right?

02:33:02.460 --> 02:33:32.380
I mean that's not that's not that's not that doesn't explain the record but explains his strange choices like he's he is I think he's just kind of turned into a bitter older dude I just I don t I don't know how somebody who was behind the band violence has gone on to just make so much crap I just never you know I have what to me I had the first machine head album burn my eyes and I got the locust I probably have the blackening maybe but even then they're just sort of like eh they're okay like none of them I know George you're a huge

02:33:32.380 --> 02:33:32.420
he's like he's like he's like he's like he's like he's like he's like he's like he's like

02:33:32.440 --> 02:34:02.020
I'm a fan of blackening, but it's just never been my wheelhouse. I just always thought they were just a little bit more nu metal than anything else. I agree with the blackening is brilliant, I have to say, but that's kind of it. That's the only one I own. I've had the other ones, some of the later ones, and nothing comes close to that, and they've made a lot of missteps. The only other thing I would say about Rob Flynn is he did a really cool acoustic version of Die Young right after Ronnie James Dio died. You might YouTube that sometime.

02:34:02.460 --> 02:34:32.240
It's an acoustic version, him in his backyard. It's pretty sweet. Sings it nicely. Die Young from Heaven and Hell. Cool. I got a couple more. This next one, the band is called Midnight. The album is Sweet Death and Ecstasy. This is the third full-length album from this Cleveland Black Speed band. And I like this album, but I have to say that I think there are a lot of people that think that this guy's shit doesn't stink,

02:34:32.320 --> 02:35:01.320
that this is the be-all, end-all album, and I do not agree with that. I think it is well-produced Black Speed, but it's just like if Motorhead did a Black Thrash album. It's nothing mind-blowing, but it's fun. It's okay to listen to. Isn't there like 20 songs on the record? Yeah. Yeah. And there's two girls scissor-kicking on the front cover. Well, I'm interested.

02:35:04.119 --> 02:35:32.180
Which I'm back. Haccoons blocks it out. You lost me, then you had me. I think there's a lot of hipsters that are into this stuff that they're just like, oh, this is the greatest thing. And I'm like, it's all right. It's not terrible, but it's not, you know, the second coming. I haven't given it a proper listen, but I will. Okay, a couple more. Rope Sect. Persona in Grata. It's, I think they might be German, and it's kind of a gothic.

02:35:32.320 --> 02:36:02.220
Death Rock albums. It's kind of heavy, but it's kind of not metal, too. I found that on a list. I thought it was cool. I spent a lot of time listening to the first five Slayer albums just because Slayer. Just because. Because, because, because, because, because. Because of the Slayer-y things they does. And then my last two are ones that I got from John, also on Bandcamp, that he sent me. Thank you,

02:36:02.340 --> 02:36:31.840
John, Virian Geo, Australian Progresso Black Metal, and the Nord Ambient Alliance. Oh, man. It's like the best fucking album ever. You won't like it, Will. No, it's ambient. Is it black there? No, it's not. No, it's dark ambient to its ultimate core. It's very cool stuff, if you're into dark ambient.

02:36:32.320 --> 02:37:01.500
Is it brown gaze? No. Blue gaze? All right. Well, there we are. We have successfully reached the end of yet another episode. And I have somebody in mind for the next episode, so we'll see if we can get them. But yeah, so before we go, let me just say to check us out on SoundCloud.

02:37:02.320 --> 02:37:31.900
Like us on Facebook. Hit us up. Tell us what you think. We're on Twitter. I am at DiscipleOVMetal. I'm at CatatonicJ, but I don't really go on Twitter much anymore. I should kind of update that. I'll try to get a little better about it this year. I'm at BrewMetalWill. BrewMetalWill. At WhiteCluster69. For everything. Yeah, you can look us up on Bandcamp as well. Yeah, check us out on Bandcamp, definitely. See what we're listening to. Send suggestions.

02:37:32.320 --> 02:38:00.060
And you can find us on Stitcher and WeAreMetalHeads.com. Also, MetalHeadsPodcast.com. They go to the same place. So here's hoping to have a really awesome 2018, which, as I was just mentioning, I was reading the latest issue of Decibel, and they have a whole bunch of albums coming out this year that sounds awesome. Carcass and Napalm Death and just lots of good stuff.

02:38:01.100 --> 02:38:30.300
Yeah, I was just talking to our buddies in Horrendous, and they're coming out soon. Oh, seriously? Just real quick. They'll be at Dust Bowl Metal and Beer Fest. They were added to it, yes, so that'll be very cool. Yeah. But I also didn't know they were your buddies. That's awesome. Well, I shouldn't say they're my buddies. I met Alex, the bass player, at the last Metal and Beer Fest, and then I've been chatting with him on Messenger about playing Atlas, and they will hopefully be coming to Atlas soon.

02:38:30.760 --> 02:39:00.680
Awesome. In the new year. Cool. That last record was great. Yeah. Both are great. I like the last two. They are phenomenal live. Yeah, we saw them at Death Fest a couple years ago. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, speaking of which, I got to give a shout out to these local teenagers that just played Atlas. Torvos. T-O-R-V-U-S. They're on Bandcamp. The production on Bandcamp is crap. When they played live, like every single person who watched them,

02:39:00.740 --> 02:39:30.700
was like, holy crap, these guys are just out of high school. They weren't even old enough to drink, which is weird to play in a brewery. They were young kids, but man, they fucking nailed it. It's kind of like this death thrash that they do. Check them out, Torvos. They're on Bandcamp. Like I said, the production on Bandcamp is not good, but when they played live, they were wowing people. Several people, the sound guy, several other people there were just like, wow, who the fuck?

02:39:30.760 --> 02:39:44.740
Fuck are these cats? It's a trio. That's awesome. Check them out. Where are they from? DC. Nice. Alright. Check it out. And we'll see you next time. See ya. Later.

02:40:00.740 --> 02:40:25.835
I can't believe in the
