Metalhead Podcast, Metalhead Podcast, Go!

00:00:26.260 --> 00:00:27.980
You must listen.

00:00:28.980 --> 00:00:30.180
You must listen.

00:00:31.340 --> 00:00:32.540
You must listen.

00:00:36.420 --> 00:00:39.980
Now, here is the podcast, Metal Heads Podcast.

00:00:41.000 --> 00:00:42.440
Hello, and welcome to the Metal Heads Podcast.

00:00:42.670 --> 00:00:43.380
My name is George.

00:00:43.840 --> 00:00:44.400
This is Jay.

00:00:44.650 --> 00:00:45.080
This is Will.

00:00:45.440 --> 00:00:45.960
This is John.

00:00:46.540 --> 00:00:47.080
This is Matt.

00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:53.140
And we are joined today by a guest, actually one of our listeners,

00:00:53.220 --> 00:01:23.000
that responded to our call for somebody to come in and sit in with us and talk metal with us. And his name, actually, I'll let him tell his name. He doesn't want to try it. It's Markisan NASA. Markisan. No, I knew it. I knew it. I just had it scripted such that I was going to let you introduce yourself. So. Oh, yes. Skoll, everyone. I mean, thanks so much for having me on the cast.

00:01:23.240 --> 00:01:53.200
I've been a really big fan of Metal Heads ever since I found you guys a couple years ago. Really? That long? So yeah, I'm excited to do this episode. And I've been playing Judas Priest Blood Red Skies and Repeat this morning just to get properly fired up. He just made a friend for life. Oh man. Hey Mark, you're already on. You don't have to suck up that much, okay? I thought there's just this natural inclination from everybody to just kind of suck up the

00:01:53.240 --> 00:02:22.840
George a little bit. I don't know what it is. I mean, like out in the real world, too. Yeah, people are always sucking up to me. That's for sure. He said sarcastically. Yeah. All right. Well, so you've got a pretty interesting job. Why don't you tell us about that a little bit? Well, I'm a comic book writer. I'm also an editor. I do a lot of different writings, but mostly I've been focusing on comic book writing for the last few years. So I broke into the industry a couple of years ago with a book I do called Voracious.

00:02:23.240 --> 00:02:53.200
I was reading about that on Amazon and I think I'm gonna have to pick that up yeah it's it's pretty cool it's about a chef who travels through time kills dinosaurs and serves them at a restaurant in the present nice nice are you fucking serious that's awesome do people know do people know that it's dinosaurs that they're eating they don't know no nice well maybe you should read the comic will and you'll find out if they know well I mean if I told you I was serving you dinosaur would you believe me

00:02:53.220 --> 00:03:21.520
No. No. What if you told me it tastes like chicken? It probably does, since chickens and other birds are descended from dinosaurs. There's a lot of different kinds of birds out there. Turkey doesn't taste like chicken. There's lots of other birds. Ostrich is red meat. Different dinosaurs probably tasted different. Are you familiar with the comic Chew? Yes. I was thinking that would be a really great crossover right there.

00:03:23.240 --> 00:03:53.160
It ended actually Did it? I picked up the first couple but I never finished it so I didn't realize that it ended. That sucks. I liked it. Yeah, we have recipes in every issue too. Awesome. Nice. All right, well I'm definitely going to pick that up. So it's at this point we reminded everyone that this is not a cooking show and this actually is the Metalhead podcast. This is the cooking show episode. Dinosaur style. So how long have you been into metal? I've been in metal since I was a teenager. I really got into it.

00:03:53.220 --> 00:04:22.620
when I was in college though. I grew up in Syracuse, New York. I was a teenager in the late 80s and early 90s. So there was a big hardcore boom in central New York. So bands like Earth Crisis originated there. So I was exposed to that stuff and then it made me want to seek out heavier bands. And when I went to college, I met this group of guys from Canister to New York and they loved metal. And so they spent most of their time drinking beer, smoking tobacco pipes and listening to metal in a dark squeak that they called the Death Star.

00:04:23.220 --> 00:04:49.800
So they opened my ears up to a lot more metal. From Incantation, My Dying Bride, Cynic, stuff like that. And then ever since then, I've just been my preferred music. Do you have any favorite styles, genres, bands? Death metal is probably my favorite. I like Doom, too. I dabble in some of the other stuff.

00:04:53.220 --> 00:04:55.660
You just tweaked both of Will's nipples

00:04:57.740 --> 00:04:59.620
But you know I like a lot of traditional metal

00:04:59.780 --> 00:05:01.320
You guys talked to chemists recently

00:05:01.460 --> 00:05:03.400
and I love that band quite a bit

00:05:03.540 --> 00:05:05.280
I've seen them at the time they've come to Chicago

00:05:06.940 --> 00:05:09.620
But yeah, death metal is number one for me

00:05:09.960 --> 00:05:11.160
Is that where you're at now in Chicago?

00:05:11.760 --> 00:05:12.060
Yes

00:05:12.420 --> 00:05:15.620
You are a lucky man because that is a great metal and beer scene

00:05:16.040 --> 00:05:17.380
Oh yeah, oh yeah

00:05:17.620 --> 00:05:19.760
I'm drinking beer right now

00:05:20.180 --> 00:05:21.720
from a place here in Illinois

00:05:21.720 --> 00:05:51.340
So it's called The Devil's Reign. Oh yeah, I think I have it. What's the brewery? It's Una Annie. Uni Annie. So like Three Floyds is basically readily available to you at all times? Yes. Nice. Yeah, it's, I mean, that's an Indian, but it's just a short trip. It's like a suburb of Chicago, basically. Does any of their stuff go into stores at all, or are they just straight from the brewery?

00:05:51.740 --> 00:06:21.680
Oh, no, we have it in stores out here. I can get it when I'm in Wisconsin. Yeah, you can get it most places out here. I like to go to the brewery, though, because sometimes they have, well, all the time they have some limited edition stuff. Nice. But the only thing I haven't had in a while is Dark Lord because that festival is just crazy. I went to it in the early days when it was easy to get in and you didn't have to spend a lot of money. Now you have to go in for, I don't know, like,

00:06:21.720 --> 00:06:50.640
$300 or something, and you get four bottles. You get to see a lot of bands and everything, but it's just pretty expensive and crazy crowded. It's kind of what Surly's done with Darkness Day. It's like a two-day thing now at Festival Grounds, but part of it was you buy, I don't know, X number of bottles of it, and it was a bit more of a... Yeah, I love Darkness. I'm actually going to drink that next. I have a 2016 Darkness that I'm going to bring up. Nice. Nice. I see why you like our podcast. Yeah, you just fit right in.

00:06:51.060 --> 00:07:20.940
I'm actually upset that you guys aren't drinking. I don't know. I got a world. I'm recovering from a lot of things. Yeah, I was going to say a lot of things. I'm pretty convinced that Jay doesn't drink anymore because he doesn't drink on the podcast anymore. And his excuse is it's either I just ate. It's too early in the morning or I'm recovering from last night. Well, not true, because I know Jay's staying up late watching A's games because he's always checking in beers after I go to bed. I get up in the morning and I see him all pop up on my screen.

00:07:21.060 --> 00:07:50.000
I did see you just checked into a half acre speaking of Illinois or Chicago. Literally I forgot to put in a daisy cutter and seven stills from last night so I had to put those in this morning. Have you had the double daisy cutter or the galactic daisy cutter? I think a double was a luch beer wasn't it? Did he send us one of those? No. Well we got that from someone else didn't we? Yeah we got the double daisy cutter. We got that a while ago. It was in the Bible.

00:07:50.420 --> 00:08:20.040
Yeah, man, Chicago rules for beer. And I mean, I see a metal show almost every month. So I mean, it's a great place for both of those things. Have you been to Haymarket Brewery? Yes, I have been there. Yeah, my friend Pete Crowley started that one. And when I was in brewing school up in Chicago, I went to Siebel up in Chicago. And Pete was the head brewer at the Rock Bottom downtown. And the guy was just making unbelievable beer. Not even school trained, just the intuition.

00:08:20.120 --> 00:08:50.040
this guy had and then he started Haymarket. I haven't been back to Chicago since to go check it out and go visit. I'm glad you know it. Yeah, well, if you're ever here, I've done a PDF. It's about 20 pages of all my favorite places in Chicago. Wow. So you can actually click on the links and go to the sites online and it has a map. It tells about all the neighborhoods, breweries. And you haven't sent this to us yet. Why? I just met you. I have to find out if you're worthy. You're not worthy.

00:08:50.780 --> 00:09:20.060
I'm assuming you go to Kuma's Corner every now and again. Kuma's Corner is my favorite place. I've had every smoked burger on the menu. Yeah, it's great. All right. So do you have a favorite metal concert that you've been to? Favorite metal concert? Yes, just to put you on the spot and not give you any advance warning. Yeah, I think I'm going to go. I'm going to go with Iron Maiden. I saw him last year. It's the first time I ever saw him, which is crazy.

00:09:20.100 --> 00:09:49.340
crazy, because I've been listening to Iron Man forever. And they played out here at a big outside arena, and I was not prepared for that kind of show. Just the props that they put on, and just the energy of the band. And they're old as fuck. So I couldn't believe it. They're jumping around and throwing guitars like 10 feet in the air and catching them. They have more energy than bands half their age. That'll be Yannick Gers you're talking about, throwing the guitars.

00:09:50.600 --> 00:10:19.440
I'm crossing my fingers that they're going to bring this legacy of the beast thing to America. I really hope they do. I haven't seen any dates, but man. It's 2019, isn't it? They're going to do that? Have you guys seen the pictures of the shows? They're amazing. They're got a huge airplane on stage. Oh, shit. Yeah. A Spitfire or something. When they do Aces High, just really pulling it out, pulling out all the stops on this tour. They're being like, well, they're just pulling it out. Excuse me while I whip my

00:10:19.480 --> 00:10:49.300
be my spitfire owl. There it is. Okay, well, what about a favorite album for this year so far? Chemist is high up there for me. I also like King Goat, which is funny. You guys just did the interviews of both of those bands. Those are pretty high up there for me. I really like the Tomb Mold record that came out. That has not gotten old with me yet. I've probably played that more than any other. Has it gotten moldy? Say it, Chase. Tomb.

00:10:49.480 --> 00:11:19.060
Move. Do the voice. There we go. I digress. Please continue. I don't know. Like I said, I really like Deathmiles. I really like the Skeletal Remains album from this year, too. Let me think. Hold on. I probably have a list somewhere. Let's see here. Atlas Moth is really good. Rivers of Nile. I really like Where Owls Know My Name. Are you just reading off my list? What are you doing?

00:11:21.740 --> 00:11:49.420
Did everybody watch that video for Where I Always Know My Name? Oh, it just came out, right? Yeah. Let me think. Galvanizer, I really like Sanguine Vigil. It's a really old school death metal album. Yashira, I don't know if you guys have heard that, but Shrine, that was a, it's like a progressive metal band. I like that quite a bit.

00:11:52.020 --> 00:12:17.980
I've been listening to that. That's on my list for what we're listening to for later. But I love that. I keep spinning that over and over. Sounds like there's some HM2 in that one. HM2 pedal. Yeah. You know, and I have to call out, not seriously, but I wanted you to know, John, I would have put Pariahs as my album of the month, but it actually came out in July. But it could still be your album of the month.

00:12:22.200 --> 00:12:49.200
I mentioned this now because I put Crawl as mine. That's a great record. No, that's George and I talked about that and we skipped July. Fuck July! It's just because we did the mid-year right after that or before that. Yeah, I mean, yeah, there's a lot of good albums this year. For sure. Now, you either have or had a podcast, right? Are you still doing that?

00:12:49.480 --> 00:13:18.459
I still do a podcast with my friends a comic book podcast I haven't released it in a long time because when we first started doing the podcast we were reviewing comic books and then I broke into comics so it's weird to critique comic books when all these people are now my peers so I had to shift gears a little bit and do something different so I've been recording with my friends a bunch of podcasts and I hope to launch it next year

00:13:18.460 --> 00:13:47.400
They're kind of timeless, so I can just get a lot in the bag and then put them out. Cool. But they're basically versus cast. It's called the pop culture kickdown. And basically you can take any two pop culture things, like a movie versus a comic, two comics against each other. Oh, cool. I have a ranking system for parts of, let's say, a comic book, like best characters, best supporting characters, best face punchery.

00:13:48.200 --> 00:14:17.500
You know, things like that. Punchery. Punchery. I'm here for that, man. Because I like to use the term jackassery. Yeah, I like that, too. Punchery is much better. Yeah. So, yeah, so, but, and it's neat because when we go through it, you think that maybe one's going to win over another. But then when you actually rank it by these, you know, systems, these little things that make up the whole, sometimes it comes out a little different than you think.

00:14:18.180 --> 00:14:47.460
So it's been fun doing that. And then I sometimes do an interview podcast with comic book creators. I haven't done it in a couple years. I've been really busy working on my own stuff. But I like that because I do an in-depth interview with a comic book creator where instead of just asking surface level questions, we go in deeper to how they create the comic. It's based on a single book that they're working on, not their entire body of work.

00:14:48.200 --> 00:15:17.140
So maybe I'll get back to that next year too. Cool. Before I get into my really important final question, where can people find Voracious? You can go to my website. It's markassan.com. It's M-A-R-K-I-S-A-N. You can also go to Voracious Comic on Twitter or Facebook and find us there. And we're doing a bunch of updates. We have two volumes of the book out now and we're working on the third. So that's coming out pretty soon.

00:15:17.180 --> 00:15:47.080
And I'm going to be doing some other stuff. I have a heavy metal love story comic in the works right now. So that'll be my next book that comes out. Oh, is it featured George and John? It features you in your hand. I like dicks. This is really good. Cool looking stuff.

00:15:48.279 --> 00:15:52.260
on your website there. And then also, there's a great picture of you in a Viking hat.

00:15:53.340 --> 00:15:55.540
Marcus, do you also illustrate the book?

00:15:56.400 --> 00:15:57.980
I don't. I just write the book.

00:15:59.279 --> 00:16:02.960
Basically, I come up with everything that happens in it, and then I write a script.

00:16:03.780 --> 00:16:05.880
And then the artist comes in and interprets it.

00:16:05.880 --> 00:16:08.260
And the artist is Jason Muir. He's my friend.

00:16:08.480 --> 00:16:12.420
And it's neat because we developed the book together, which is unusual for comics.

00:16:12.930 --> 00:16:17.160
But we live near each other, so we'll go out, have beers, and talk about it

00:16:17.160 --> 00:16:47.140
the book and it's been a blast it's our first comic book and it's uh it's hard to break into the industry so we're pretty excited um about the book and the first issue sold out and we get to do a third volume and that's pretty unusual as well uh because it's an indie book our books worldwide but our publisher is small um because like i said it's our first book but uh is it on can you find it on um what's it cosmicology comic yeah comixology yeah yeah it's on there

00:16:48.700 --> 00:17:16.680
I can send you guys the PDFs too. I mean, if you want to check it out. Yeah, love to. We do. We do. And since Will knows about comiXology, I think that means you read comics. I do, Will. I still read comics. I got it strictly for all the new Star Wars comics that are coming out, which are all now canon. And I couldn't get to the – there's a comic book store not far from my house, but just getting down there once a week or once a month or whatever when they release stuff and I miss it and it's like I'm way behind.

00:17:16.740 --> 00:17:46.700
I'm like, I'll just do this cosmology thing. And it seems to. Cosmicology? Or comiXology. Cosmicology. Actually, if you listen to the podcast enough, you know I'm not the most intelligible person. Well, you love death metal, so I give you a pass. Yeah, exactly. That was the perfect place to pause. I'm not the most well-spoken person. Marcus, I wonder what you think of things like comiXology. Because I have to tell you, I really enjoy

00:17:46.740 --> 00:18:16.000
reading comics on my iPad because they seem as if illuminated from behind. I mean, they just really, they pop. But I'm wondering if you're more of a traditionalist type. Yeah, I mean, I love comiXology. I read about a third of my books on comiXology that I buy. I am still really into print. There was a time where I had switched over to comiXology and I found that I just, I like to interact with the books, I guess. I don't know. Maybe it's just from when I was a kid and I used to go to the store and pick up the print copies.

00:18:16.120 --> 00:18:46.080
and I'm just used to that smell and holding the book and all that. But I do like Comixology because I can get a lot more stuff. They always have sales on books and you can have everything on one device. So I'm pretty organized. I have a list of all the comics I'm going to buy every week and what I'm interested in getting further and I'll just wait for the sales to come out on Comixology to pick up more books. But I buy two books.

00:18:46.140 --> 00:19:15.780
much on Comixology. Sure, yeah. But this, by the way, is there's a short whiff of our roundtable coming forward here about collections. But did you say you had a grand finale question, George? Yes, it's the most important question of the day. I saw on your website that you like short rib tacos, and I'm sure Jay is wondering what you think of burritos. I mean, who doesn't love burritos?

00:19:16.120 --> 00:19:44.100
As long as there's meat in it. Yeah. Dinosaur meat. Well, I can give you one recommendation I prepared for a very metal comic if you want. Yeah. So I recently read this. It's called Prison Pit by Johnny Ryan, and it's published by Fantagraphics. And it's basically about an unkillable badass wrestler-like guy whose name is Cannibal Fuckface. Cannibal Fuckface.

00:19:46.140 --> 00:20:16.100
And he gets dropped on this inescapable planet and has to fight, do brutally weird battles with other creatures to try to get off world. And it's funny and it's sick. The fights are disgusting and crazy bloody. I'm talking about battles with a weird demon who jerks off and forms a giant suit of jizz armor. I'm like, fuckface gets his arm chopped off and a slug thing called a slorge crawls into his stump and then gives him the ability to transform into fucking

00:20:17.280 --> 00:20:45.460
That is impressive. It's crazy. There's this part where Fuckface, I love just saying Fuckface. Fuckface. He's forced to have sex with this harpy made half out of diamonds so he can open a sky portal for a robot. There's a dude with an undigestible scrotum. It's nuts. It's just crazy. An undigestible what? Scrotum. That's what I thought you said. Undigestible. How does one find their scrotum is undigestible? I mean.

00:20:46.120 --> 00:21:16.060
I don't know. I don't know. That's the beauty of the book. I discovered it earlier this year. Volume 6 came out. It started in 2009, so I was kind of glad that I got into the game late because I got to read all six volumes at once. That is super metal. They even made a cartoon of it. It's exactly like the first book. You can get it online. If anybody wants to try comics and want something very, very,

00:21:20.799 --> 00:21:46.020
I'm a reformed comic fan. I used to have a pretty heavy comic book addiction back in the 90s. I would go to my local comic book store where they would have things on reserve. And there would be literally a stack every week of comic books that the majority of my money would go to. And I still have boxes and boxes of them.

00:21:46.140 --> 00:22:15.600
in my closet. But at some point I was like, I gotta, this is too much. I gotta, I gotta cut back. And that led to just like doing other things and not reading comics. And then every once in a while I'll go into a comic book store or do a comic con and I'm just like, start itching. I'm like, I'm just going to go get some Conan back issues. That's it. Nothing else. I'm just going to. Oh yeah. So it's funny because I'm trying to get all the Conan back issues right now. Yeah.

00:22:15.680 --> 00:22:42.420
So I don't know if you see it, but all that over there is Conan stuff. I just want to move in with you. And listen, there's a new Conan series coming out in 2019 written by a guy named Jason Aaron. He's a fantastic writer. So if you want to get in, I think when you read Voracious, you'll get back into comics, but if you want to really get back into it with a great writer on Conan 2019, man. All right. That's awesome.

00:22:45.680 --> 00:22:52.180
got into when you were younger as far as comics uh my and we're going down the rabbit hole i know

00:22:52.960 --> 00:23:01.280
uh my first comic ever got i have it framed like right above me is a batman 431 and um i was drawn in by

00:23:01.280 --> 00:23:15.660
the image i was in a mall and uh the image is a batman um hanging upside down from a tree and there's a moon behind him he's all silhouetted and um when i saw that in the in the bookstore in the mall i had to find out what it was

00:23:15.660 --> 00:23:43.860
And when I read the book, that's when I got hooked. Because it's all about Batman traveling to Nepal or somewhere in the Himalayas to learn this special technique, this killing technique. He doesn't kill, but he just wants to learn everything he can. And it was written by Jim Owsley, who is writing comics still, but he goes by the name Christopher Priest now. And I actually got to meet him earlier this year, and I brought him that book, and he was shocked.

00:23:45.660 --> 00:24:15.620
I think I got him when I was like 12. So, um, and I'm 43 now. Uh, so yeah, he actually signed it, Jim Osley, even though he had legally changed his name. So that was a pretty big moment for me because I told him, Hey, you're responsible for getting me into comics. But, um, Daredevil was a big thing for me by a writer named Annie Asenti. Um, I actually collected her entire run into a hardcover. Um, you can get a book spawned and that's kind of fun. I've been doing that because it's just easier to read them instead of like,

00:24:15.680 --> 00:24:45.120
going through boxes and boxes of comics. So X-Men by Chris Claremont was a big one for me too. So nice. Awesome. Hey, Markisan, have you ever listened to the band geezer featuring geezer, Butler, Burt Bell? No. GZR. Yeah. GZR. All right. Well then I can't ask you that question because there's a Batman song. All right. Well, I'm, I'm ready to, uh, to jump in. Um, some metal. Yeah.

00:24:45.680 --> 00:25:15.620
So because we didn't schedule a band, when we don't do that, we tend to do what we call a roundtable. And John came up with a topic for us, so I'm going to let him talk about that. We are all big metal fans, obviously, and so are probably most people listening. But we never really talk about how obsessed we are with it. So I thought, why don't we just go down, as we were just saying a second ago, the rabbit hole and talk about our obsessive nature, how we collect, how we sell.

00:25:16.260 --> 00:25:21.920
how we display just the whole nine yards so whoever wants to go can go first

00:25:23.940 --> 00:25:27.120
well why don't we do like we normally would we'll start with Markisan

00:25:28.040 --> 00:25:34.760
and just work our way up from there cool um sure um you know my wife got me a turntable a couple

00:25:34.880 --> 00:25:43.140
years ago and now i have like 250 lps so most of them are metal uh so she's always getting on me about

00:25:43.160 --> 00:26:13.100
You keep buying records. Why do records keep coming in? I get that too. I have an allowance and I'm staying in the budget. I've run out of places to put them. I have these IKEA cubes. It has like four slots in it. And I have eight of those. And they're full. And I'm stacked on top. So I really have to cut back on that because I just don't have anywhere to put them.

00:26:14.300 --> 00:26:43.080
Yeah, I don't either. I have a cabinet right below my turntable that fits records, so most of them are in there, but then I have some on a bookshelf. I live in a condo, so I just need a house just to store my records, I think. Originally, when I started collecting, I was just going to buy my absolute favorite records on LP. Spoken like a true junkie. It's crazy. I do so much impulse buying because of all these limited edition.

00:26:44.900 --> 00:27:11.220
and just remastered versions of the records. It gets hard to resist. But I find that I get obsessed about something for a while and then I calm down. So I think maybe I'm on the downside of buying so many records. Maybe. Don't count on it, man. The problem is they keep making them. Well, in my defense, I spin records every day because I'm a freelancer and I work at home.

00:27:13.160 --> 00:27:43.120
I'm just buying them and they're sitting. I'm actually playing these records quite a bit. Yeah, I listen to mine too. And I have a spreadsheet for records and then I started putting my collection in Discogs because it's just really well organized and you get all the specific details for the records and then you can export a spreadsheet of your collection with what they're worth right from Discogs. So it's really handy. I like that somebody actually created that and I don't have to do it. Or when you're at the store and you can't remember if you have something or not and so you have

00:27:43.160 --> 00:28:12.620
to look at your collection because you can't remember. You're like, I think I have this. Yeah, and is it first press? What color is it? I can't always remember because there's so many. But Discogs makes it simple. Well, we need to friend up. George and I are real active on Discogs. I think Will and John are both on it. I don't know how active they are on it. I'm on it, but not that active. Okay. Yeah, but we'll get your information before we're done today so we can friend up. Yeah, cool.

00:28:13.160 --> 00:28:17.740
I like to look at other people's.

00:28:17.920 --> 00:28:18.840
He likes to watch.

00:28:19.020 --> 00:28:19.620
You'll watch her?

00:28:20.100 --> 00:28:20.720
Yeah, I am.

00:28:21.280 --> 00:28:22.760
I browse through George's up frequently.

00:28:23.000 --> 00:28:25.580
Every once in a while, if I'm bored, I'm like, what am I going to read right now?

00:28:25.640 --> 00:28:27.120
I'm like, you know, I'm going to look at George's collection.

00:28:28.220 --> 00:28:28.500
Truthfully.

00:28:29.840 --> 00:28:32.040
And then you get bored and like, all right, well, let me look at it.

00:28:33.160 --> 00:28:34.160
I only have a couple hours.

00:28:34.340 --> 00:28:35.660
I can't keep looking at this thing.

00:28:37.360 --> 00:28:38.220
It never ends.

00:28:39.880 --> 00:28:42.700
Jay's Friday night is eating a burrito and scrolling through George's.

00:28:42.800 --> 00:29:12.560
George's collection. Wow. Yikes, buddy. I'm busy in here, honey. Don't open the door. All right. Well, Matt, what about you? Man, I'm going to be a total letdown. A few years ago, I kind of adopted this lifestyle of minimalism. And so I don't own much physical, I don't own any CDs anymore. I do have a digital library, which is obviously handled digitally. I was gifted a record player about 20 years ago,

00:29:12.780 --> 00:29:41.660
which I worship. And most of my records have been either some good use finds or hand-me-downs. I personally don't actively buy new vinyl that comes out. And to be honest, my only flow of vinyl in is what my wife finds at garage sales. She's very passionate about garage selling, going to stores and just getting things used. And so there's always a lot of vinyl. And honestly, John, I sent you that pic the other day, the Uriah Heap album.

00:29:41.860 --> 00:30:11.840
I'm actually impressed with what she finds. Her thing is, if it looks weird, she thinks I would probably like it, and so that's how it comes in. And kind of my rule of thumb has been, because I have a lot that's been gifted to me that I haven't gone through and thought about whether or not I want to keep it, and I'm talking things that aren't specifically metal but might be good, and for me that's going to be a do I keep, do I let it go. Mostly I'm kind of obsessed with the 70s in my vinyl. But anyways, to your point, George, I have one of those Ikea things. They are fabulous for records, and my goal is to never

00:30:11.880 --> 00:30:41.760
have more than just one of those full of records. So once it fills up, I don't have to start going through a little bit more. So, yeah. All right. So basically I'm a loser, but. Sounds like a smart person to me. You're the smart guy. Well, here's the thing. I helped a guy move one time and he had about 40,000 records and that shit was heavy. I mean, it was a few hundred and I thought I'd never want to have to do that again, but. 40,000? Yeah. He was crazy. I got a friend.

00:30:41.920 --> 00:31:11.800
like that too. He worked at Amoeba for years and he's got a record room and it's insane. At that point, you just need to open a record shop. I can't move mine. I mean, when I moved in to this place, I had at least a couple hundred and that sucked. And it's like exponentially larger at this point. I'm like, I don't know. And like the CDs, I have like, I'm going to say a couple thousand CDs. Sorry, I shouldn't be talking.

00:31:11.880 --> 00:31:40.560
and it's not my turn. It's a round table, baby. Oh my god, a box of CDs is heavy as fuck. Agreed. Yeah, I have a lot of CDs too, but a place just recently opened up down the street for me, so I think I'm going to take them there and try to sell them. The thing is, I kind of want to burn all of them too, but it takes forever to do that. But you're at home. You just throw it in while you're doing stuff. That's what I used to do. Lighter fluid's handy.

00:31:41.620 --> 00:32:11.060
That's not true. You misunderstand, Bern. Here's an interesting thing. I was on vacation in Wisconsin with my family. It was kind of a touristy town. It was like a bookshop that had books, records, CDs, all that kind of shit. I went in and right away on the counter is used metal CDs. What do you think the price of a used metal CD was? Five bucks. Fifty cents. I'd say two dollars.

00:32:12.420 --> 00:32:12.780
$10.

00:32:13.400 --> 00:32:13.660
What?

00:32:13.890 --> 00:32:15.240
It was $15.99.

00:32:15.600 --> 00:32:15.860
Jesus.

00:32:16.180 --> 00:32:16.240
What?

00:32:16.860 --> 00:32:17.940
Used Cannibal Corpse.

00:32:18.660 --> 00:32:22.820
They haven't gotten, they're not getting a lot of fresh news down there, man, I'll tell you that.

00:32:23.300 --> 00:32:23.940
I just saw that.

00:32:23.940 --> 00:32:25.560
Maybe they were just like, they wanted to price it.

00:32:25.820 --> 00:32:26.720
They felt weird about it.

00:32:26.720 --> 00:32:28.660
And they're like, we'll just price it so high that nobody will buy it.

00:32:28.980 --> 00:32:29.060
Yeah.

00:32:30.170 --> 00:32:30.460
I saw.

00:32:30.640 --> 00:32:32.600
And then the dude who priced it took it home that night.

00:32:33.100 --> 00:32:33.300
Yeah.

00:32:33.820 --> 00:32:39.360
I saw there was a band on Bandcamp that I'd come across that I was like, that's kind of cool.

00:32:40.120 --> 00:33:10.080
Maybe I'll pick this up. And I looked at it, and it was like $16 for the digital album. And I was like, okay, fuck you. Sorry, I'm not buying that. Not for digital. I've never seen anything that expensive for just a digital. Well, it better be 24-bit, I'll tell you that. I don't think so. Yeah, it's that expensive and 24-bit I might buy depending on the album. I was going to say, I mean, I see the outlandish prices, like the $666 and stuff like that. But yeah, for it to be

00:33:10.120 --> 00:33:11.420
be $16.

00:33:11.780 --> 00:33:12.880
I'll see a couple of those.

00:33:13.070 --> 00:33:15.420
And I do think you don't want anybody to listen to this then.

00:33:15.740 --> 00:33:16.860
I mean, fucking sludge.

00:33:18.000 --> 00:33:19.320
Sludge gives everything away.

00:33:20.440 --> 00:33:20.820
You know?

00:33:21.120 --> 00:33:21.920
It's like, what is it?

00:33:21.960 --> 00:33:22.880
Choose what you pay or whatever.

00:33:22.930 --> 00:33:23.840
Yeah, $9.99.

00:33:24.220 --> 00:33:27.120
It should be the absolute most you pay for a digital album.

00:33:27.980 --> 00:33:28.120
Yeah.

00:33:29.380 --> 00:33:30.760
I think it should always be half.

00:33:30.760 --> 00:33:33.000
I feel that the same way with comics, too.

00:33:33.180 --> 00:33:34.680
We were talking about comiXology earlier.

00:33:35.799 --> 00:34:04.940
The physical copy should be the normal price, and then digital should always be half. And then there should be discounts on it from time to time. Sales. Yeah, and I also, by the way, they don't have to, but I think every record label should do free download if you buy the vinyl or whatever. Yeah. I've noticed that if you buy on Bandcamp, they'll give you the automatic free download. But if you went on Discogs or some other, like Amazon,

00:34:05.080 --> 00:34:34.560
I just ordered the new Skull album on Amazon on vinyl. No digital download. I'm like, really? Come on. Who did the Death Reaches Episthetic? Relapse. Relapse is really good about it. You always get a download with Relapse. I think Metal Blade is pretty good about it, too. You know what I do sometimes if I don't get a download? I just contact the company, the album label, and sometimes they'll just send it to me. I'm like, hey, I bought the album.

00:34:35.880 --> 00:35:04.980
I'd love to get the digital download for it. And they almost always send it to me. So I feel like just ask. I've done that many, many times for things that I've wanted in life. So it works. And it doesn't cost you anything. You'd be in the same position if you didn't ask. Yeah, that's true. I think that's the best advice we've ever had in this podcast. That's pretty good. Ask and you shall receive. But I like that you... What I'm getting here, though,

00:35:05.080 --> 00:35:35.060
you're saying you do that with a lot of different products and things and i'm starting to picture us all doing it like in restaurants and just sort of like you know is there any way that i could just not pay for this today with that people i eat so many burritos i've eaten a lot of burritos and i just have a free one that's right all right uh john just look behind him yeah the reason why this is john's question john's not earthquake country anymore and that's good because you'd be in danger in there

00:35:35.080 --> 00:36:03.920
Yeah, so to my detriment being the oldest person, when I was record collecting at 12, 11 when I started, there was no other thing other than to buy hard copy. And it's never gone away. I continue to buy hard copy to the point where I've actually started buying some digital, which I don't like doing sometimes because there's in the back of my mind, there's going to be that day where the grid goes down.

00:36:04.860 --> 00:36:34.740
And it's down for an extended period of time. And I'm going to say, you know, I haven't listened to that album in like 17 years. And for whatever reasons, I need to listen to it all day today. So having my hard copy would suffice. But I got some more advice for you. Get Carbonite or an external hard drive. That's what I got. Carbonite. All right. So, yeah, here's this big old beast I got right here. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Put that away, John. This is...

00:36:34.780 --> 00:36:41.060
I'm actually surprised it's black

00:36:46.080 --> 00:36:48.760
well Jay it was the biggest one

00:36:54.080 --> 00:36:55.700
but you say

00:36:56.620 --> 00:36:58.480
just throw it on the drive

00:36:59.020 --> 00:37:02.939
I got a lot of material that dates back 25 years

00:37:02.940 --> 00:37:30.540
and it takes a long time to get that stuff loaded up. But I've been collecting for almost 40 years now, and I prefer to have hard copy just because I want real liner notes. Very few bands, even on Bandcamp, when they release something digitally, they release liner notes. They don't. And so I did buy one album today on Bandcamp where they do release liner notes in PDF, but most of them don't. So I prefer to have that stuff just because that's how I grew up listening to music.

00:37:33.520 --> 00:38:02.920
I still have a lot but I don't go crazy for it so I usually bands that I buy vinyl for bands that I like a lot I just don't buy random vinyl although I've been known to be with Will and George at you know the vinyl place in Philadelphia and like I'm not gonna walk out with much and like fuck how much did I just spend cool store man it's hard yeah well or Soundgarden in Baltimore yeah those are nice stores until you go up to

00:38:02.980 --> 00:38:32.900
up in North Jersey. And then you're just like, I'm never going home ever again. It's the East Coast equivalent to Amoeba, but way more metal than Amoeba. Probably three times as much metal than Amoeba. So. Yeah, we got a good record store for metal out here. It's called Bucket O'Blood. Nice. And it's right around the corner from Kuma's. So, you know, it's basically the best place to be. And I'm friends with the people that run that place. They're just, they're terrific. And they'd also, they also have a science fiction.

00:38:32.960 --> 00:39:02.100
fiction and horror books there. Oh, nice. But they have a really extensive metal collection. So whenever I go there, I almost always buy something. So let's do the timeline then. I assume you go drink first so that when you go buy, it's not an issue. Yeah, fuck it. I'll take two more. I can afford it. Actually, what do you mean first? I drink first, then I drink at the shop. I don't know. I don't understand what you're saying. I'm asking if you prime the pump before you get in.

00:39:06.880 --> 00:39:29.960
That's after you're done buying? No, that's more of a question for Will. Are we ready for Will? I don't really know us, don't you? I'm not even going to get into how obsessive I am with how I have everything stored on my laptop. Will hears me frequently talking about MusicB because I converted him to use that software.

00:39:33.640 --> 00:40:02.880
I try to get as much as possible, but I have started slowing down a little bit just because I'm out of space completely. We moved into a smaller home than my last place, so I don't have the acreage to put all this stuff. You should get one of those big black things, and you can have two of them in and around your desk. I like dicks. I mean, I see a little bit more room on that CD Mountain Bank.

00:40:03.500 --> 00:40:32.240
There's some walls. Yeah, so if you're listening, so we're looking at each other on video on Skype, and behind John is literally, I see just from the vantage point that I have, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven rows of CDs high, and I'm sure it probably goes all the way to the floor, and then on the top row, there's one stacked on top of that. That's just this side of the room. You don't see the other side of the room. Right, I mean, it's insane.

00:40:32.440 --> 00:41:01.980
And then you don't see the boxes of stuff I don't listen to anymore that I pull out just so I can have space to put the new stuff. So that's just the a section of albums. Well, maybe up to B if I want to be fair. But anyway, yes, if I was in my old place, I'd have plenty of room. But this house is a lot nicer. Will and George have been here. So they know it's a little more laid back than probably living in a crowded area. So anyway, I'm obsessed.

00:41:02.460 --> 00:41:02.820
Next.

00:41:04.980 --> 00:41:06.800
I have a problem. I admit that.

00:41:07.540 --> 00:41:08.260
I'm a junkie.

00:41:09.460 --> 00:41:10.020
And I'm proud.

00:41:10.740 --> 00:41:12.080
So this is more of a

00:41:13.560 --> 00:41:15.560
less of a roundtable, more of a

00:41:15.690 --> 00:41:15.820
meeting.

00:41:17.900 --> 00:41:18.580
You know what?

00:41:19.780 --> 00:41:21.480
Hi, this is John.

00:41:21.680 --> 00:41:23.000
I mean, that's how it starts, right?

00:41:23.210 --> 00:41:24.180
Hello, my name is John.

00:41:24.660 --> 00:41:25.200
Hey, I'm John.

00:41:25.410 --> 00:41:27.560
And I have a problem.

00:41:28.820 --> 00:41:29.720
Is this the alcohol?

00:41:30.080 --> 00:41:31.780
Is this the vinyl?

00:41:31.820 --> 00:42:01.060
What addiction meaning is this one again? Sorry. Hi, I'm Mark. I'm a record-buying asshole. All right, Will. I'm probably more like Matt. Hey, Losers Unite. I don't buy CDs anymore. I don't see the point for me, for how I do it. I'm mostly digital, but the one thing that you guys rub off on me a lot. I try.

00:42:01.840 --> 00:42:02.520
you'll get close enough.

00:42:04.020 --> 00:42:07.520
But the few things that I've done in recent years is one,

00:42:07.680 --> 00:42:10.400
now that I finally bought a single family home last year,

00:42:11.100 --> 00:42:13.040
one of the first things I want to do is buy a record player.

00:42:13.300 --> 00:42:14.840
So I do buy vinyl now,

00:42:15.020 --> 00:42:18.980
but it seems like there's something coming in the mail about once a week,

00:42:20.080 --> 00:42:22.380
but I mostly just buy doom albums on vinyl.

00:42:22.390 --> 00:42:22.980
I mentioned this before,

00:42:23.140 --> 00:42:27.720
just because when I play music in the house,

00:42:27.770 --> 00:42:30.740
it's always vinyl now and it's really nice and I get it.

00:42:32.320 --> 00:43:00.980
I don't want what happens is my wife comes home from work and I've been home for a couple hours already with the kids and then the first thing she's going to do is I'm playing like some sort of like death metal album she's going to turn that off so I mostly I mostly buy doom stuff so no one is running around the house stressed out and screaming you know and when I say that I'm talking about my two kids and my wife it's really just my wife read you loud and clear yeah you got to be strategic man I mean that's when when you live in a home with other people

00:43:01.700 --> 00:43:03.160
It's interesting how you pick your music

00:43:04.100 --> 00:43:05.760
Most of the vinyls doom stuff

00:43:06.900 --> 00:43:08.040
I mostly buy digital

00:43:08.120 --> 00:43:10.020
but one thing that I have been doing lately

00:43:11.030 --> 00:43:11.140
is

00:43:12.160 --> 00:43:13.640
I want more flack

00:43:14.380 --> 00:43:15.420
and now I'm like George

00:43:15.820 --> 00:43:18.460
where I get pissed off when I can't find something on Bandcamp

00:43:18.660 --> 00:43:19.620
because I can download the flack

00:43:19.630 --> 00:43:21.300
so I download the flack

00:43:21.520 --> 00:43:24.460
and the MP3, 320, whatever

00:43:25.540 --> 00:43:27.580
so I can listen to it on iTunes

00:43:28.460 --> 00:43:30.079
and then so I can listen to it on MusicBeast

00:43:30.080 --> 00:43:57.760
So I'm sitting at the computer, I'll listen to it on MusicBee, which is what John introduced me to. And, you know, I always thought it was sort of like, oh, you know, can you really tell the difference between like a flack and MP3? And now that I've done MusicBee, I literally will play one on iTunes and one on MusicBee, which is the flack and the MP3 on iTunes. Such a vast difference. I mean, it's unbelievable. And so I've converted to that between all you guys berating me for years.

00:43:59.380 --> 00:44:00.240
Did you say burrito?

00:44:02.240 --> 00:44:03.900
What were we doing for years?

00:44:05.380 --> 00:44:15.020
Yeah, but Will, even, you know, the big difference too, I think, is if you go headphones, you'll get way better quality with the flack on headphones than you would with an MP3 even at 320.

00:44:15.760 --> 00:44:21.000
Yeah, I know. I don't have a, I have like a Sennheiser headphone.

00:44:21.120 --> 00:44:21.840
Sennheiser, yeah.

00:44:22.340 --> 00:44:23.260
I have Sennheisers.

00:44:23.980 --> 00:44:28.920
But they're not comfortable. They're cute. I remember I wore them one time on the podcast. Everyone's making fun of me for my giant, like, prince.

00:44:29.000 --> 00:44:58.460
It looked like there's a giant earphones on. You should see my new set. Now I have my little earbuds so no one makes fun of me. So it's mostly digital stuff still to this day. I don't buy CDs anymore. I'm not obsessive about anything. iTunes keeps everything nice and alphabetically organized for me. And so does MusicBeat. Sort of. I mean, the day that iTunes can learn to alphabetize by last name of artist will be a fucking revolution.

00:44:59.000 --> 00:45:27.420
I mean, Alice Cooper's in the A's, you know what I mean? It's like, come on. Can't you, but Jay, can't you go into the tag and change the sort? You can. Oh, so I'm the dumb one. God damn it. You're the dumb one, Jay. I'm like, I'm like, this thing is so limited. The whole time it's my point. Well, iTunes is a big piece of shit, but. Yeah. When you buy from iTunes before, I haven't, I haven't purchased from iTunes in a long time. I usually get from Bandcamp, but you couldn't get, you can only get like 120 KPBS. Has that changed?

00:45:34.220 --> 00:45:58.340
I got to get 320 at least. I like FLAC, but those files are so big. That's a lot of storage. You got to get one of those big black things like John. Wait, didn't you just tell me that you just need to get myself a big-ass storage facility? Yeah, you do, but the FLAC will take up the room quite a bit. If you get Carbonite and you get a subscription, you get unlimited storage. I honestly don't know what Carbonite is.

00:45:58.840 --> 00:46:28.760
It just backs up your computer, all your files, to a digital Iron Mountain somewhere, wherever it is. And if your computer dies and everything is stored on your hard drive, then everything is backed up on Carbonite. Jay, you don't watch late night television on local channels? Because that commercial comes up every so often. Does it let you access the files from there? Like, can you listen from there? Or is it simply just a backup? Like an archive? That's a good question, actually. I don't think I've ever tried to listen from it.

00:46:28.840 --> 00:46:30.780
I always thought it was just a backup, but maybe you can.

00:46:32.220 --> 00:46:39.460
What you can do is if you're at a different computer, like say you're at work, and for whatever reason, you can log on to carbonite.com and access your files.

00:46:39.640 --> 00:46:49.680
So what's handy about it is, oh, man, that file's on my computer at home. I can't get to it. Oh, yes, you can. You can go log on at work if you don't have firewalls preventing it at work.

00:46:50.120 --> 00:46:50.920
Not at my job, he can.

00:46:50.980 --> 00:46:58.380
Yeah, exactly. But anyway, you can access your files from anywhere. You can probably just buy an app on your phone.

00:46:58.520 --> 00:47:28.300
You can log in and browse your files. It's basically like browsing your hard drive on your computer. So it's pretty nice. And I got that after I just got tired of external hard drives and all that stuff. Okay. Yeah, I'm interested. I'm going to look this up. Especially since I am also notorious for losing everything every few years. Though I do have an external hard drive. And external hard drives crash a lot, man. I mean, I've gone through many. I actually have, I think I have three external hard drives and Carbonite. And they just become non-compatible at some point. You know what I mean?

00:47:28.500 --> 00:47:57.500
You have to update that physically every so often. And then you have to be in the habit of making sure you're putting everything on an external hard drive every couple of weeks. Yeah, Carbonite does that automatically. It operates in the background. The only time it's annoying is if you just download something and you download it to your download files, your download folder, and then you want to move it to your iTunes or your MusicBee or whatever folder is that Carbonite starts doing it instantly. And if you're not quick and move it,

00:47:58.540 --> 00:48:28.420
Carbonite will start backing it up and then you can't move it until Carbonite's done. That's the only thing that's annoying about it. Yeah. Interesting. I use Backblaze, which is probably pretty much the same thing. Unlimited backup online. But I also have an 8-terabyte hard drive, which is where I keep all the flack. And it's only half full. And I have a shit ton. Only half full of 8 terabytes is a lot of fucking money. Yeah, my drive is 6 terabytes, George. Same thing.

00:48:28.520 --> 00:48:57.900
I'll never be able to fill mine up. Because you have more than I do in terms of collection. Yeah. John, how big was yours? It was only six terabytes. George, can we see yours? Yeah, sure. Hold on. George's only fills up half, so his is only four terabytes. John Williams. Mine's six, Delsa. And it's black. All right, man. Everything's on the table. All right, Jay.

00:49:00.000 --> 00:49:28.460
I'm kind of a mix of all you guys. Not unlike Matt, I disavowed, not disavowed, but I got rid of all my CDs a few years back just because I sort of embraced the digital world. And I was glad I did. I mean, like you were talking to Markisan about like selling yours. I mean, they've really lost their value. And I work at a library and at the library, like we're seeing circulation of CDs as going way down because streaming is the way of the future. So we actually have streaming.

00:49:31.840 --> 00:49:58.480
I have a lot of vinyl probably have 400 and change I actually think maybe approaching 500 right where I don't know but anyway mine are behind me I have the IKEA shelves I have them stacked and then I have I have three and they're pretty full um like John I always think John and I have very similar interactions with our collections um and that is to say that I a huge liner now guy I love to and

00:49:58.520 --> 00:50:00.460
And I'm disappointed when a record doesn't have

00:50:01.760 --> 00:50:02.920
a fair amount of liner notes.

00:50:03.120 --> 00:50:05.560
When it's just like a white sleeve and nothing else inside.

00:50:06.080 --> 00:50:07.140
That kind of gets on my nerves.

00:50:08.080 --> 00:50:12.960
And it's some of the bands that I love that do wonderful packaging,

00:50:13.360 --> 00:50:17.520
like Behemoth is a good example, those Death 3 issues.

00:50:18.740 --> 00:50:20.380
That's a fucking evening for me, man,

00:50:20.380 --> 00:50:22.400
when you get a record that's got a lot to it,

00:50:22.760 --> 00:50:25.680
that you can sit and listen to, that you can read things about.

00:50:26.080 --> 00:50:28.100
So anyway, and then I'm also a huge periphery guy.

00:50:28.180 --> 00:50:29.640
I like to buy the toys and stuff.

00:50:30.700 --> 00:50:31.900
What's going to be seen behind me?

00:50:32.540 --> 00:50:37.300
I just spent way too much fucking money on a merciful fate thing.

00:50:38.060 --> 00:50:39.280
Those knuckle bones things.

00:50:39.420 --> 00:50:41.260
They're pretty lame, those knuckle bones things.

00:50:41.300 --> 00:50:46.620
But when they do somebody, like they do these statues, but when they do something with makeup, they can pull it off because it's not that hard to do something like that.

00:50:47.260 --> 00:50:48.160
Did you get this?

00:50:49.880 --> 00:50:50.900
Fucking A, dude.

00:50:50.980 --> 00:50:51.740
Where did you get that?

00:50:52.280 --> 00:50:53.180
Where did you get that?

00:50:54.060 --> 00:50:55.120
Super 7, man.

00:50:55.140 --> 00:50:56.120
Go to Super 7.

00:50:56.740 --> 00:51:25.180
For everybody who's listening, this is a King Diamond figure. It's sold out now. They do all kinds of metal figures, punk figures. They did the Misfits, the Fiend. I have that. Super7.com? Yes, Super7.com. How awesome is that, though? It even comes with the microphone, too. Yeah, that's awesome. I will say what I just bought is much better.

00:51:26.740 --> 00:51:55.900
out yet, but it's this knuckle bones thing of King Diamond and Merciful Fate. They have a King Diamond one, which I got, but now there's a Merciful Fate one coming out. And then a 3D representation of this album cover. Oh, sweet. Don't Break the Oath. And it's like literally a finger comes out at you. I spent like 400 bucks on this stuff. The awesome there's some flames to it too. It is. No, it's wicked, dude. I'll send you guys a picture here. But anyway, it's, and then just other things that like are attached to the things I loved when I was younger and the things I love now.

00:51:56.280 --> 00:52:26.260
George this is actually a copy I have for you sweet it's a graphic novel I have that and it's really good it's um there's such a good story in here about um what's not a story but it's it's basically Tom Warrior going through all these different meeting all these different metal icons and stuff like Tony I only but that's all done in this very DOA like they hand him the you know the sacred sword or whatever and anyway and then it ends with him sitting there listening to welcome to hell and as a kid and he's imagining all this stuff there's a great fucking book anyway so it's like those

00:52:26.280 --> 00:52:56.260
I love to buy those things and I love to have visual representations of the things I love and I truly will this is also the room I play guitar in when I practice guitar and all my toys and posters and stuff are in here so good yeah I was gonna say I just went on the super 7 website so it's super and then the number 7 yes they have the Iron Maiden like Eddie two minutes the mint are aces high they got the killers album covered that's all the action figures of Eddie

00:52:56.300 --> 00:53:26.260
The Trooper. You can buy all four for $60. I see the Misfits thing in there. And then I guess something like The Man from Uncle or something weird. I really regret missing the King Diamond one. I have the Fiend one, too. I have the Glow in the Dark from San Diego Comic-Con exclusive. Oh, nice. Yeah. Cool. Yeah, Super 7. I hope they do a lot more metal toys because I would just make a

00:53:26.280 --> 00:53:27.280
wall full of those.

00:53:27.710 --> 00:53:27.840
Yeah.

00:53:27.960 --> 00:53:28.480
There you go.

00:53:28.660 --> 00:53:28.720
Yeah.

00:53:29.160 --> 00:53:30.960
But it never occurred to me to go to their fucking website,

00:53:31.190 --> 00:53:31.280
especially,

00:53:31.540 --> 00:53:32.620
I'm really depressed.

00:53:32.650 --> 00:53:33.640
I missed that King diamond one,

00:53:34.320 --> 00:53:34.460
but,

00:53:34.540 --> 00:53:34.740
um,

00:53:35.340 --> 00:53:35.560
but that,

00:53:35.980 --> 00:53:36.340
so some,

00:53:36.400 --> 00:53:38.800
all I need to say is my collecting and the stuff I have,

00:53:38.920 --> 00:53:39.680
it's sort of holistic.

00:53:39.750 --> 00:53:40.020
I mean,

00:53:40.120 --> 00:53:40.180
I,

00:53:40.660 --> 00:53:41.960
I'm not overwhelmed with things,

00:53:42.800 --> 00:53:45.900
but I have more like signed posters and stuff than I could ever display,

00:53:46.790 --> 00:53:47.120
you know,

00:53:47.200 --> 00:53:51.060
like this Alice Cooper things and behemoth things and tons of other things.

00:53:51.110 --> 00:53:52.120
And so,

00:53:52.320 --> 00:53:52.740
but you know,

00:53:52.800 --> 00:53:53.160
and it's just,

00:53:53.190 --> 00:53:53.580
I don't know.

00:53:53.720 --> 00:53:54.960
I'm sort of warmed by that.

00:53:55.040 --> 00:54:24.920
I love having the things that I love around me. I'm a bit of a minimalist too in almost every other area, but I love to own. Yeah, we know. I love to own old records. I like to buy them just like you, Marcus, I buy the new remasters. I have nothing against the new big packages. I love them. So some of my, you know, I have like old Iron Maiden issues, but when the new ones come out, I buy those too, you know, if it's something I love. Yeah, I mean, I just got the,

00:54:25.020 --> 00:54:54.960
The Crawl was like a box set and it came with a patch and all this extra stuff. It's a gorgeous little box set. I couldn't resist it because it wouldn't cost that much money. So a lot of metal bands are putting out. It's vinyl, but it comes in a package, like a box. And then it had a bunch of it had... Actually, I'm using the coaster right now. It came with this sweet coaster and a patch and a poster and it's signed.

00:54:55.980 --> 00:55:24.660
They only made 50 of it, so it's like, oh, I really like this album. I think I want to get this. I think they still have some, because that band's not super popular. I don't get a lot of limited edition packages, actually. When we go to news, the Metallica section, I talk about that, but I'll probably talk about that. Every once in a while, something comes up where I just can't resist it, unfortunately. Actually, that's probably the perfect way to put it for me, too. The Metallica box sets,

00:55:25.020 --> 00:55:54.140
Those are some very formative, important records to me. So to have that amount of information and sound that comes in those boxes, I bought all of them so far. And likewise, and I wish Iron Maiden would give Number of the Beast that treatment, you know, stuff like that. So I have like, some of my holy grails don't even exist. They're just things I want people to treat in a proper way. Long story short, it's really nice to be somebody who loved metal as much as I did when I was a kid and growing up.

00:55:54.220 --> 00:56:19.800
And then I have, you know, I'm not rich, but I make good enough money to buy the things that I want now. And it's so satisfying to fill my house with all that I would have loved to have had when I was 15, you know? Yeah. So anyway, George, this is going to be, this is what George, let me kind of remind you of one thing, George, and that is that on an early podcast that I was on, we tried to come up with metal names and yours was scorched earth because that's your theory when you walk through a record store.

00:56:22.860 --> 00:56:52.220
Yeah, I'm sure it's come up many times on the podcast that I'm a bit OCD obsessive about my metal music. And when there were formats, I was very obsessive about whatever the format was. I mean, I still have like 600 cassettes. Like I'm staring at piles of them right now. And like I mentioned, I have a couple thousand CDs and about 15. I remember those, you used to do those cassette porn pics on Instagram or maybe Facebook. Yeah, it was Instagram. Yeah.

00:56:52.300 --> 00:57:18.060
That was awesome. How many 8-tracks do you have, George? None. I was just old enough to miss that boat. And probably about 1,500 vinyl, I guess. I stopped counting because, like I said, I had to just sort of stop buying vinyl except for, you know, important things. I mean, I just got The Chemist from Will. And I got the new Inferro Brewer.

00:57:23.420 --> 00:57:51.940
But for the most part, I don't go out looking for vinyl anymore because I just don't have room anymore. And that was the same thing with CDs. I had so many CDs. I'm like, I had to buy custom CD racks. Not buy. I had my dad make custom CD racks because he's like a woodworking guy. Because there just wasn't anything big enough to hold all my CDs. So when digital came along, I hit that pretty hard because I was like, all I need is hard drive space.

00:57:52.320 --> 00:58:20.860
And I have like a row of hard drives. But my main music one is an 8 terabyte. And I do flack. I had about 250,000 MP3s when I stopped doing MP3. And iTunes. And when I discovered food. Sorry? I was going to say, do you refuse, like, even if it's an album you like, if it's not on flack, you won't get it? If it's only MP3? Correct.

00:58:22.320 --> 00:58:52.020
You will not get it? No. I won't buy it. I won't buy an MP3. I'll listen to it on Spotify. But if it's not on Bandcamp and I can't find it anywhere else, I mean, there's other places like 7 Digital is another place that sells flack. Then I'll go to Amazon and try and find the CD and buy that and rip that as flack. But I won't pay money for MP3 anymore because it's bullshit. And as mentioned,

00:58:52.300 --> 00:59:22.280
earlier, when I first started doing Flack, I was like, ah, you know, it does take up a lot of space. I'll just do the really good stuff. You know, I'll do like the Black Sabbath and the Iron Maiden and stuff like that. And, you know, everything else will just do MP3, stuff that I don't care about. That lasted for about a month. And then it was like obsessive, everything must be Flack. And this morning in my, I use Vox, which is Mac-based audio software. And they have a cloud service called

00:59:22.300 --> 00:59:50.860
So everything that I have a full my music folder gets watched by Vox and anytime I put new music in it it gets uploaded into their cloud so I can stream it to the app anywhere I want from my phone or on the computer and I had 172,000 tracks in that so I did not stick to that plan. And when I first went mp3 I went through and ripped all my CDs.

00:59:52.320 --> 01:00:22.240
It took me like six months to rip all my CDs at 128k like a dumbass. I started going back and doing 320k but then I went through and re-ripped everything as flack again so you know I got a lot of disposable time to do all that. Hey let me ask you guys do you ever buy multiple copies of a vinyl like different colors or of one band? I have. I have too. Sometimes.

01:00:22.300 --> 01:00:50.180
Sometimes by accident, I hate to say it, you know, because I don't have my phone with me. I thought I didn't own Seventh Son of a Seventh Son recently. And I bought it and I came on and I was like, what the fuck? Yeah. Or like the Celtic Frost reissues, you know, before the Celtic Frost reissues, I hunted down original pressings. But then when they reissued them, I was like, well, they got a pretty little mouth on them. I'm going to buy those too.

01:00:50.260 --> 01:00:50.340
So,

01:00:51.359 --> 01:00:51.680
so,

01:00:51.680 --> 01:00:51.720
uh,

01:00:52.200 --> 01:00:52.300
I,

01:00:52.420 --> 01:00:52.680
and I,

01:00:52.840 --> 01:00:52.920
yeah,

01:00:53.000 --> 01:00:53.540
I actually,

01:00:53.600 --> 01:00:53.900
it's funny.

01:00:53.920 --> 01:00:55.360
I didn't do the reissue reissues,

01:00:55.500 --> 01:00:55.920
but I did the,

01:00:55.960 --> 01:00:56.220
I mean,

01:00:56.260 --> 01:00:56.340
the,

01:00:56.440 --> 01:00:56.540
uh,

01:00:56.900 --> 01:00:57.300
I had like,

01:00:57.300 --> 01:00:58.640
I own a couple copies of monotheos,

01:00:58.760 --> 01:00:59.780
one of which I'm going to give to,

01:01:00.020 --> 01:01:00.300
to will,

01:01:00.920 --> 01:01:01.040
but,

01:01:01.140 --> 01:01:01.380
um,

01:01:02.440 --> 01:01:02.520
yeah,

01:01:02.800 --> 01:01:02.880
no,

01:01:02.880 --> 01:01:03.320
I do sometimes.

01:01:03.720 --> 01:01:05.140
There's a few things I have that are like that.

01:01:06.260 --> 01:01:06.340
Um,

01:01:06.500 --> 01:01:06.580
yeah,

01:01:06.680 --> 01:01:07.360
I did it with the,

01:01:07.360 --> 01:01:07.440
uh,

01:01:07.520 --> 01:01:08.360
the new chemist album.

01:01:08.420 --> 01:01:10.320
I really like desolation a lot.

01:01:10.460 --> 01:01:10.680
And they,

01:01:10.900 --> 01:01:11.000
uh,

01:01:11.380 --> 01:01:11.960
I got the,

01:01:12.780 --> 01:01:15.000
I think it was brown inside white inside orange.

01:01:15.420 --> 01:01:16.200
And then they did a,

01:01:16.380 --> 01:01:20.240
a beer mustard one

01:01:20.300 --> 01:01:49.700
And then they did a record release. They only did four cities where they played the entire album. One of them was Chicago. And so I ended up buying that one. And I think it's orange with black splatter on it, too. So now I have three of these chemist albums. And I've got to get rid of them. I don't think I can keep all of them. It's crazy. Why do I have three? What's wrong with me? I bought an extra one, and I sent it to George. What's wrong with me? I saw on Bandcamp, it's like, oh, vinyl came out.

01:01:49.740 --> 01:02:19.300
And it was just a different color. So I bought it. I'm like, oh, I don't need this. Well, but you know what? To go a little further, my collecting even I extend to my friends. And what I mean is sometimes I'll see something and I'm like, I have that. I'm like, I'm going to buy it and I'll just fucking send it to one of you guys. Because I can't not buy it if I know it's hard to find or whatever it is. Also, Marcus and I, we had, of course, interviewed Chemist a couple of times. And it seems to me in the first interview we talked about the different colors of their presence of their vinyls.

01:02:19.320 --> 01:02:49.280
that there were certain colors they couldn't even get their hands on. I remember them sort of saying, no, none of us got the purple one. That's crazy. Yeah, they should be able to get all of them. I used to think so, yeah. I used to do that with comic book covers back in the day. Who was it? I think it was the McFarlane Spider-Man. Does that make sense? McFarlane Spider-Man ones. When they came out with the new series and the first one, there were five different covers.

01:02:50.339 --> 01:03:19.260
They did like a gold metallic and a silver metallic. Like a sucker. I bought every one of those up. Same. It was just like, what's the point? And I hate to tell you, those 90s comics are worth nothing. I know. The print runs are so high on them. Exactly. They were like, oh, well, we're just going to make all these covers and we're going to sell a bunch of them because people are going to think they're going to be worth something. But they flooded the market and there's nothing now. It's funny you say that. So you did it.

01:03:19.320 --> 01:03:49.180
And you're like, why did I do it? It's funny because there is a point where you realize, like with things like that, you're like, I'm kind of having a contest with myself here. You know what I mean? Like, I'm not going to win this thing. There's not some point where somebody's going to come into my home and truly appreciate what I've accomplished here. So my collecting is truly focused on what makes me happy. I try not to get caught up in the whole, it's so limited. If it's limited, you know, I'll usually only buy it if it's meaningful to me, like those merciful fates things that I just forwarded to you guys. So I want that.

01:03:49.320 --> 01:04:19.300
That should have been made years ago. I fucking love it. It's one of my favorite records. I'll take it. I mean, I like all the records I buy. It's just do I love them? I don't know. It's tough. I think I'll end up selling a lot of them. I actually hold myself up to that standard, believe it or not. For vinyl, I need to love it. Yeah, I'm the same way. So something you just said, and this goes out to everybody, do you buy the vinyl in

01:04:20.339 --> 01:04:25.500
for a collection and reselling purpose, like, hey, this may be worth money

01:04:25.820 --> 01:04:49.300
sometimes so I can resell it? Like when you guys talk about buying multiple things, or is it just all for just, this is mine, I'm never going to sell it? It's purely out of love. I've never sold a record yet. So even though I have Discogs, I just haven't sold it. But I'm thinking about it now because the collection just is out of control. I don't have room for it right now. And I only have 250 records. You guys have way more. But I think about, I will say this, I do think about

01:04:49.300 --> 01:05:19.280
that sometimes like Nevermore's This Godless Endeavor just came out. Oh, I got that. Me too. And I spent kind of too much money on the original pressing because I didn't think it was ever going to come out again. So I bought one of the however many hundreds they made. And I don't really need both of those. I am under the impression I would maybe get rid of the more valuable one if I can turn it into trade. I don't care about selling it. Yeah, you should because the remastered one sounds way better. It sounds way better, dude. And it's on cooler vinyl too. It is. It's tough because there's a lot of people who want to

01:05:19.320 --> 01:05:49.280
get that original and have to have the original one. I'm not that guy. So, yeah. Jonas from... At the gates, yeah. Yeah, at the gates. He was like that. Yeah, he was. I remember I picked up a couple things from one of them was Awaken the Guardian and he was like, oh yeah, that's cool. He's the original. I was like, and he walked away. Nope. I mean, I don't care. I'm tempted sometimes when I was just in Norway and so when I went to the Nessa Blood, they sell all these

01:05:49.280 --> 01:06:19.240
like the first dissection, or Storm of the Light's Bane, or something. And it's really expensive. And I'm just tempted to get that. Or the Dark Throne. I really like Soulside Journey, which is a death metal album, the only one they ever did. So I wanted to get that, but it was just so expensive. And they put out a newer version that sounds better. So I didn't buy it at the Nessa Blood, and got the newer version.

01:06:19.280 --> 01:06:48.440
I'm pretty happy with that. I got something else instead. I got an obliteration. Have you ever heard that death metal album? It's a Norwegian death metal band called Obliteration. Pretty great. Is that not like a tech death kind of thing? It's not tech death, but it's like weird. Oh, wait. I'm thinking of Obliterate. I think. I think I know what you're talking about. Obliteration, yeah. It's called Necrosoms, I believe, is the name of the album. I have kind of maybe an interesting way to wind this up.

01:06:48.520 --> 01:07:18.460
because we were sort of creeping towards this particular question anyway, which is if you're willing to share with something you maybe spent the most money on or that and then you regret or not, it doesn't matter. I mean, and I'll just offer up the fact that I think the most expensive record I bought was the original pressing of Monotheist Celtic Frost. And I know I spent at least 150, 60 bucks on that or something like that, but I had to have it. I mean, and of course, then it came out, it came out a reissue. I don't think they remastered it already.

01:07:19.300 --> 01:07:48.460
So I, so I, so I, you know, and then, and then I'm some of the toys I've spent a lot of money on too, but you know, I think. Speaking of which, as we were doing this podcast, I went on that super seven and I just spent a hundred bucks. You're welcome. I think. Thank you. I think. Or maybe another one I would remember is, I would, I would mention this just like the way we invest in these things. Like I just did that Alice Cooper meet and greet thing. That was a lot of money.

01:07:48.520 --> 01:08:18.500
I don't remember what it was but it's like 500 bucks or something but I spent it without even thinking I was just like I got room with my American Express yeah I was wondering about that because all the stuff that you got to do and you received and all the interaction you got the time you spent with Alice like that must have been astronomical amount of money or or if it was not wow that was a really great deal I honestly don't even remember I know it's at least 500 it might have been 800 to be honest with you I don't know I have to I'll have to look at the

01:08:18.640 --> 01:08:48.440
But it's totally worth it. It's all that podcast money. Jay, when I'm on Facebook, that photo pops up a lot. Anytime I'm doing something, it's suggested to invite certain people, and you always pop up, and it's always that photo, and it always makes me happy every time I see it. Every time he's got his arms around your neck, I'm like, this is a good day. If he had been, and I don't believe it's all about money with Alice, but if he had been like, yeah,

01:08:48.520 --> 01:09:18.240
I'll take that photo with you for another 500 bucks. I'd have been like, let me get my checkbook. Are you ever going to remove that as your profile picture? Eventually, but only if I ever get myself choking Bruce Dickinson. Or kick diamonds. I will say, as the non-collector, the most expensive thing I purchased was Skeleton, which is Forever Abomination. I bought it at one of their shows so I could meet and take my photo with Chance.

01:09:18.520 --> 01:09:19.960
which I shared with you guys.

01:09:21.009 --> 01:09:22.600
To which I don't share with many people.

01:09:22.819 --> 01:09:25.020
But he signed it and we got the photo.

01:09:25.900 --> 01:09:27.600
So that's about as far as it's been for me.

01:09:28.000 --> 01:09:28.819
But that's pretty good, dude.

01:09:28.910 --> 01:09:29.460
I mean, you know.

01:09:29.759 --> 01:09:31.380
I'm sure you don't regret it.

01:09:31.480 --> 01:09:31.560
Yeah.

01:09:31.880 --> 01:09:32.040
No.

01:09:32.319 --> 01:09:34.180
I was just looking online at something.

01:09:34.190 --> 01:09:36.100
I did not buy it because I'm not insane.

01:09:36.819 --> 01:09:44.000
But my holy grail is a seven-inch Woods of Eprey allure of the earth.

01:09:45.060 --> 01:09:45.240
Wow.

01:09:45.810 --> 01:09:47.880
Hey, George, you know, I can give you a couple extra.

01:09:48.020 --> 01:10:17.980
It almost never comes up, because this was released by David, self-released, and the copy that finally came online was $400. And I was like, it's one song. It's hard. I know, but when it's something that's as near and dear to your heart as that is, it's hard. Joel said I should ask David's mom that she might have a copy that she would sell.

01:10:19.520 --> 01:10:47.840
But I haven't gotten to it. So let me ask you this. If you're going to pay $700 for a 7-inch record, I'm assuming you're talking about records, or $400 for a record, would you play it? Or is it like you don't want to even put a needle on this to possibly scratch it? I would play it. Okay. There's no records that I buy that I wouldn't play. Yeah, me too. Yeah, I'm the same way. I do. I buy them to listen to them. I mean, the most expensive thing I ever bought was,

01:10:48.680 --> 01:10:50.140
Fall of Afrotha.

01:10:50.480 --> 01:10:52.120
If you ever hear that band, they're like

01:10:52.820 --> 01:10:53.420
God bless you though.

01:10:57.760 --> 01:10:58.700
There's like an Atmospheric

01:10:58.980 --> 01:10:59.660
Crust band and

01:11:00.300 --> 01:11:02.680
all of their songs are based on

01:11:02.880 --> 01:11:03.540
Watership Down.

01:11:04.600 --> 01:11:06.280
And they did a bunch of albums

01:11:06.380 --> 01:11:08.420
and they put out a box set called The Warren of

01:11:08.640 --> 01:11:10.360
Snares. It's a 6LP box

01:11:10.440 --> 01:11:12.480
and so it has three albums that

01:11:12.520 --> 01:11:13.640
they did and then it has

01:11:14.300 --> 01:11:16.820
extra songs on 45s

01:11:16.840 --> 01:11:46.780
It came with a metal sigil and a flag and all this other stuff. It was long sold out. Actually, this is a good example. I contacted the company that put it out, the label. I said, hey, I really want to get this Warren of Snares box set. Do you have any left? They're like, oh yeah, we do have a couple left. I ordered it. It goes for $450 on distribution.

01:11:46.820 --> 01:12:16.780
or eBay or something. So I got it for just the base price. I think it was like $200 or something like that. But I love that band. I mean, that's a crazy concept. Doing Watership Down, which is also one of my favorite novels of all time. Because Will inspired me, Super 7 is here in San Francisco. And I'm wondering if they have a storefront in any case. And you're right, the King Diamond is unfurled.

01:12:17.700 --> 01:12:46.780
Yeah, it sold out super quick. I mean, most of their stuff lasts for a while, and they only do limited runs, but that one, apparently everybody wants that one. Yeah, I just bought all four of the Iron Maiden Eddie ones and both the Misfits ones. I'm like, fuck it, I'm getting them. They're cool. They've done like six different Misfits ones. So I think they just released a new one where it has blood on it or something. All right. I have the Maiden Pobbles. I've had the Trooper one and the number one.

01:12:46.840 --> 01:13:15.840
The Beast one. Yeah. Anyway, George, you said all right, and I think that's a great transition. Yeah, why don't we get into the news? So Metallica's getting ready to release the 30th anniversary box set of End Justice for All, as they have done with the first three albums.

01:13:16.820 --> 01:13:45.940
It's a massive box set with vinyl and a ton of CDs and DVDs. I think the Master of Puppets one had a cassette. Maybe it did. I'll have to look at it again. They had buttons and just all kinds of stuff from that period, basically. I'll be getting that. Am I right in my recollection that this thing is close to $1,000? No.

01:13:48.080 --> 01:14:14.500
Oh, okay. You're thinking of the Guns N' Roses. Yeah. Oh, Jay, you're thinking of the one that comes with a bass guitar? There is none that comes with a bass guitar. For $1,000, you should get James Hetfield's mustache. And he should drop it off at your house. Yeah. Well, yeah, I think it's like $130, actually. It's not too bad. I ordered it. They're very quality box sets.

01:14:16.060 --> 01:14:20.340
to know about Master of Puppets or whatever it is than you ever wanted to know. It's all in there.

01:14:20.580 --> 01:14:25.800
I'm going to wait and see to see when you guys get it and if there's any bass on the album that I may consider getting it.

01:14:26.120 --> 01:14:32.220
You can listen to the remaster of Dire's Eve right now and some other stuff too.

01:14:32.600 --> 01:14:35.880
I'm with you on that one, Will, too. I'm holding off until I hear it.

01:14:36.120 --> 01:14:40.060
You're not wrong. It sounds like one guitar and a drummer to me is the record.

01:14:40.360 --> 01:14:41.100
It's still a good record.

01:14:42.340 --> 01:14:46.020
Jay, where can you hear that? Is it Spotify or is it...

01:14:47.380 --> 01:15:14.240
Actually, the fastest, easiest is go to Metallica.com and go to their web store. Under the actual product itself, you can listen to it. Plus, there might be a live video there from Mountain View. Which is the other thing. These all came with DVD concerts from the eras, too. Go ahead. I'm stoked about the Injustice for All.

01:15:16.700 --> 01:15:43.980
That's the first Metallica album I really got into. So I'm happy they're going to have a remastered 180 gram LP. I'm not a super fan of the box sets. I mean, I just talk about Fall of Afrofa, but there's only certain ones that I would get because I just won't listen to all that extra stuff. So I'm just in for the album, you know, because that's what I'd throw on. So I'm glad that they offer, you know, a variety so that if you don't want all the bells and whistles that you can just get the record.

01:15:44.200 --> 01:16:13.420
So you can just buy the remastered record? Yes. And the same with the other ones, too. This all reflects the fact that Metallica owns their own back catalog now, and these are all coming out on their label called Blackened Records. That's 100% theirs now. They don't share those profits with anybody. So that's why they're part of the reason they're doing this. Yeah, I'm hesitant. As much as I love this album, there's just too many swirling stories about what happened in the recording sessions.

01:16:15.020 --> 01:16:16.500
I don't care I just like the album

01:16:17.780 --> 01:16:20.300
that's great and all but I don't want to hear someone's

01:16:20.660 --> 01:16:22.320
shitty ass snare drum pouncing

01:16:22.320 --> 01:16:24.140
in my ears because he was such a

01:16:24.240 --> 01:16:26.220
fucking prick during the sessions it is

01:16:26.280 --> 01:16:28.340
harsh it is harsh you know and

01:16:28.900 --> 01:16:30.260
I don't know who's telling the truth

01:16:30.440 --> 01:16:32.280
about what happened with the bass but the drums

01:16:32.500 --> 01:16:33.920
just sound like shit

01:16:34.440 --> 01:16:35.500
they sound terrible

01:16:36.360 --> 01:16:38.380
I agree with both you and George

01:16:38.840 --> 01:16:39.360
100%

01:16:40.820 --> 01:16:42.500
I know it's foibles but I also

01:16:42.520 --> 01:17:12.360
I like it. It's just whenever you play an instrument, whatever your instrument is, if there's someone who has it a certain way in terms of how it translates and you don't like it, it's just never going to stick with you no matter how. Jay, I'm sure there's plenty of albums that you like, but you're like, God, the guitar tone is just terrible on this. Hey John, does it sound like this? A little more clanky. That would be St. Anger. That's right. No, I totally agree with you.

01:17:13.840 --> 01:17:42.480
I mean, Jay, it's like you talk, fretless bass doesn't bother me, but I know for you, you're just like, oh, God, if I hear another fretless bass, I'm going to just tear my eyes out. Do you think the remastered version will be any better, though? You know, I'm more concerned about the remix than the remaster because, you know, half the time they remaster these things, you know what they're doing? They're just raising the levels, you know, and they're just lying. I'm more concerned about the

01:17:42.500 --> 01:17:44.660
are they going to actually pull some stuff out

01:17:45.120 --> 01:17:46.760
are we going to be able to distinguish the guitars

01:17:47.000 --> 01:17:48.340
from each other and stuff like that

01:17:48.800 --> 01:17:51.040
well they didn't remix it it is purely remastered

01:17:51.040 --> 01:17:53.000
yeah see that's why i'm a little apprehensive

01:17:53.460 --> 01:17:55.960
i will say this go listen to the diaries eve

01:17:56.220 --> 01:17:58.080
they did there are some improvements there

01:17:58.360 --> 01:18:00.200
i think that there are a lot other issues

01:18:00.760 --> 01:18:02.300
with that record production other than just

01:18:02.490 --> 01:18:04.380
the drums too i think there's a lot of problems with it

01:18:04.930 --> 01:18:06.120
but like honestly i think that

01:18:06.380 --> 01:18:08.400
the whole production is a fucking shit show

01:18:08.840 --> 01:18:10.420
it is but the thing is that

01:18:10.420 --> 01:18:40.380
When it came out, you didn't think that. I did. Oh, you did? I did. So you should definitely not buy it. But for me, you know. But I do want it. The thing is, I do want it. It's just my issue with that period, specifically in the early 90s, mid-90s, those popping bass pedals were just all over the place. Everybody was doing it, and it was drowning out the actual bass playing itself. And it was changing the way some albums should have actually been recorded.

01:18:40.540 --> 01:19:10.380
And that's my issue with it. Actually, you mentioned that in the thread that we have going. And I was glad you did, John, because I listened to this in headphones recently, the non-remastered version. And that's 100% true. Those bass pedals, that's the representation of bass on that record. He's not the only one who did it. A lot of drummers did it back at that period. This was before triggering came in and just ruined everything again. But it just doesn't sit well with me. And I don't know if the in-production studio guys tell them the truth.

01:19:10.420 --> 01:19:40.300
truth about what happened and how it happened. But if it's even remotely close to the truth, it's like one of the biggest dick jobs in the history of music, or at least in metal it is. Yeah. For me, no matter what that was, I will poke fun, but that was my first Metallica album, and I will always love it. Yeah, I saw that tour. You know, it was awesome. Me too. Matt, how old were you when that came out in, what, 89? 1989, I would have been 11. That was close.

01:19:40.420 --> 01:19:45.320
I started listening to metal when I was about 10. So it's around the same age.

01:19:47.440 --> 01:20:05.360
Yeah, I'm with Matt. I mean, you know, when it came out, it was my first Metallica record. So I have a fondness for it. It doesn't really matter about production to me as much now, because obviously I know a lot more about metal and I have a more sensitive ear. But back then, you know, it didn't matter. I was just really into the music.

01:20:06.040 --> 01:20:33.560
So, Marcus, did you immediately go back and buy Kill Em All, Master of Puppets, and Ride the Lightning? I don't. I don't normally go back and buy those reissues right away. No, I'm talking about at the time, back in 1989, when that came out and that was your first Metallica one, you're like, hey, wow, this is really awesome. Did you go back now? Did you go back in 1989 and buy the older stuff? Yes, sir. Yeah, definitely. Yeah, as soon as I heard that, I had to get the rest of the records.

01:20:34.000 --> 01:21:03.980
That's such an interesting perspective, though, too. And we've heard that from other people. My point being this, because I was on the other side of that fence, which is like, you know, Kill Em All was my first one. And so there was some of my responses to In Justice For All were like emotional. Like, I was like, this, like, what's happening to this band that I love so fucking much, you know, like, and that's a funny thing for bands, depending on which direction you came at them from. And because I did sort of feel like, also, you have to remember, like, even with Master of Puppets, nobody

01:21:04.000 --> 01:21:33.940
Like in my high school was listening to that. Yeah. And then all of a sudden they were fucking everywhere. And that's okay. It's just I want it. It's frustrating when you're like, trust me, dude, this is not the best thing they've done. And this is everybody's going ape shit over this. It's a weird thing. That's the black album. Yeah. I was going to say, Jay, growing up in the Bay Area, because I was in San Francisco, you know, during this whole period. And I remember that it was somewhat big because the MTV play for one. Yes. That's what did it. Right. But when, like,

01:21:34.020 --> 01:22:03.920
Like Will said, when the Black album hit, it literally was like, remember? I don't know if you guys ever like Robin Williams. He used to make fun of the joke. Remember the Tripoli line of death? You will not cross this line of death, Gaddafi. Do you guys remember that at all? No, no. Yeah, okay. I'm shocked you don't remember that. Seriously, do you guys watch the news? Anyway. What the fuck? Anyway. Metal Church wrote a song called Line of Death. Thank you. Anyway, there was this line of death. You'll never cross the line of death. There was a line of death over that album.

01:22:04.000 --> 01:22:05.240
when the Black Album came out.

01:22:36.000 --> 01:23:03.160
It's a weird feeling. And that doesn't happen to me anymore. It's just like, but when you're a kid, you're... That's because you're older and you don't care anymore. Yes, that's true. But it's just funny. And that's not to say anything good or bad about it. It was just Anjustice for All was the one for me where I was starting to be a little bit less enthused. Even though when I hear it now, it's actually better than I think I used to give it credit for. Do you think, Jay, a lot of that has to do with the fact that when you saw some of these bands, you were seeing them in smaller clubs or maybe theaters?

01:23:03.860 --> 01:23:33.820
Like the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. Wow, this is amazing. They're playing to 2,500 people. And then the next album comes out and they're playing at fucking Oakland Coliseum. And you can't get a ticket. And you can't get a ticket. Yes, exactly. And you're out there like some jackass standing next to the guy who sells the shirts for $10 wrapped around his arms and you're trying to buy a scalp ticket. I mean, that's what the great thing about metal is now. You can go to these small shows and see like four different bands for like $16.

01:23:34.680 --> 01:24:03.600
I went to the chemist release show and Phil's standing next to me rocking out to the band before and then we chatted right before he went on to play. So I mean I love that part of it, the personal touch of metal. So it's kind of hard when a band gets really big and then they play stadiums. I avoid stadiums. Iron Maiden is an exception because I had never seen them. Like I said, I saw them last year. But other than that, man, there's not a lot of bands that I would see in a big,

01:24:05.960 --> 01:24:33.840
I just saw what might be my last Slayer show. They're going to do some more dates. And I saw more of the Sharks play. And that's the biggest arena I've been to in a while. But it was Slayer. You're not going to fucking not go. Yeah. See, I saw Maiden on their, what was it called? Somewhere Back in Time? Yeah. What was that? In the mid-2000s? Or whatever. I saw that in Toronto at the, oh God, where did the Maple Leafs play? I can't think of the

01:24:33.880 --> 01:25:01.640
But I saw them there. So that's one of the few times I actually really enjoyed being in this cavernous place because there were so many Maiden fans there. I was like, fuck, there's like 20,000 of us in this one building. We're all going to die together. Yeah. It's like those bad guys on Metalocalypse. They gathered you all there so they could blow the place up. Yeah, well, you know what? That was cool as long as I made it to the part when he says, scream for me, Toronto. And I was like, fuck, yes. Now it could all just end.

01:25:03.880 --> 01:25:32.600
What are we drinking now? Surly Darkness 2016. What is the monster? It's Cerberus, actually. I love that beer. My better half is from Chicago. So when we head back, which we don't go back as much as we used to, we drive sometimes so we can spend some time out in Merrillville, whatever it is where Three Floyds is located.

01:25:32.660 --> 01:25:34.880
because we bring a ton of beer back when we do it.

01:25:36.020 --> 01:25:36.420
Right.

01:25:36.880 --> 01:25:37.760
We're going to make another trip.

01:25:39.020 --> 01:25:40.160
What is the name of that town?

01:25:42.600 --> 01:25:43.080
I don't know.

01:25:43.960 --> 01:25:47.240
And we never stay in the town because there's nowhere to stay close by.

01:25:47.340 --> 01:25:50.420
So we have to stay near where her cousin lives out that way in Indiana.

01:25:51.080 --> 01:25:53.360
There's not a lot around Three Floyds, to be honest.

01:25:53.780 --> 01:25:53.880
No.

01:25:54.200 --> 01:25:56.700
There's a one beer store that I want to go to, and that's it.

01:25:56.780 --> 01:26:00.200
There's actually a pizza place out there, Aurelio's, that we like a lot.

01:26:01.820 --> 01:26:02.000
Right.

01:26:02.060 --> 01:26:32.000
That's a monster Indiana. Monster. That's it. Yeah, I couldn't think of it. Yeah, they're really you're right. There's literally nothing there and amazing for nothing being there. It is a royal pain in the ass when there's traffic to get down that main road. That's true. Yeah, it's this bizarre and three flights is always packed especially on the weekends. You got to go on a weekday. We do we go usually we'll drive out on believe here on a Wednesday. So we'll get there on a Thursday and we just roll right up when they open.

01:26:32.100 --> 01:27:01.520
And even on a Thursday, there's about 60 people standing in line. The time to buy or to go into the restaurant, one of the two. It's three Floyds, Jay. I forgot where it is. It's Munster, Indiana. It's just outside of Chicago. It's like maybe 45 minutes from me. But the restaurant is great. You don't really need anything else around it because the restaurant's really good and the beer's great, of course. We got there once and it was full and the wait was long.

01:27:01.560 --> 01:27:30.300
And Jen says to the guy, you know, we just drove like 10 hours to get here. And, you know, we don't have much time because I got to do something for my dad who just passed away. And it was all this was all true. The guy said, give me one second. He literally found a spot for us at the bar. And I was just like, oh, my God, we're going to sit at the bar. This is gonna be awesome. Not because it was any holy grail, but it was just cool to sit at the bar, you know, in that place because it's so small.

01:27:31.100 --> 01:27:59.360
Yes, it is pretty small. And the guy was very cool about it. He didn't have to do that. And it was true. We literally drove 10 hours to find out we couldn't get in. I just met the owner, one of the owners, Nick, because he did a comic book actually with a friend of mine named Brian Azzarello who's pretty big in comic books right now. And they did a book called Alpha King. And it's got all the characters and stuff from the different bottles. It's just crazy.

01:27:59.700 --> 01:28:29.440
Well, let me tell you, I'm sure if you listen to the podcast, you heard our interaction with Todd, the newest or one of the newer members of Three Floyds. And let me tell you, it really was funny when he talked about Jay Scarf. Actually, I will say this, that of the whole thing we did that whole weekend, that was probably in my mind the coolest thing we did because it was the most laid back and we were drinking some big beers. That and the time we hung out with Adam in the,

01:28:29.600 --> 01:28:59.460
in the hotel room. That was a lot of fun. He pulled out the guitar and everything. Did you do the tour of the brewery? Because that's actually a really well done tour. No, but when we go back, I want to do both tours. I'm assuming they do a tour of the distillery too next door. Yeah, I'm pretty sure. Yeah, early darkness. This is one of my favorites actually. Beautiful. Tastes good. 2016, you never know. Nice. I grabbed a barely.

01:28:59.600 --> 01:29:29.220
one from last year I'm going to sit on for a while. Yeah, you should. Yeah. Let that heat just kind of slowly go away. I would like to go to the Surly Festival. I think it's like soon. I know Chemist is going to be there now, but I'm going to be out of the state, so I'm going to be able to go. It'll be the 29th. 28th, 29th, I think. Yeah, I'm traveling, so I can't go to it. And I have a friend who lives in Minneapolis, too. Oh, nice. Now you have two. Maybe next year. That's right. Yeah, exactly.

01:29:29.600 --> 01:29:59.340
You guys there too? I live in Minneapolis. Oh, awesome. I'll have to go there sometime. We can hang out. Oh, yeah, for sure, man. Absolutely. We'll go to Hammerheart. I've been to Hammerheart, actually. Nice. That's awesome. Although, I wish they wouldn't do as many smoked beers. I wish they would do something a little bit. All right. Well, you're not Will's favorite friend anymore. I don't think I was ever in with Will, but... We've all been in Will. Yeah. Trust me. It's so warm.

01:29:59.600 --> 01:30:29.520
It will want you to be in. You're in. I love the smoked beer. I really like it. I just wish they would do something else besides smoked beer because I think every single one is smoked. Don't drink Jester King, then. Is that one they do? A lot of their beers are smoked. Yeah. They're good. And sour. I hate sour beers. That's not even beer to me. I'm not a big fan of me either. I don't consider it beer. I get one every once in a while. George, do two more of those.

01:30:31.080 --> 01:30:59.540
Thank you. Thank you, sir. May I have enough. Actually, I think I was around the only time Will actually really enjoyed a sour, and that's when he and I cracked the dissident from like I don't know how many years back. That's one of the few you actually sat there and said, this is actually pretty good. No, there's when it's just a hint of sour. What I found out is that if it's soured by bread and my seeds yeast, which is a sour producing, it's an acid producing,

01:31:00.240 --> 01:31:01.460
I enjoy them.

01:31:01.660 --> 01:31:03.940
If you throw in all the lacto

01:31:04.520 --> 01:31:05.980
and the PDO bacteria

01:31:06.400 --> 01:31:07.820
that creates the

01:31:08.120 --> 01:31:09.860
or if you do all three and then it's just

01:31:10.120 --> 01:31:12.020
super sour and your pucker factor is like

01:31:12.120 --> 01:31:13.960
even your asshole is puckering and you're like

01:31:14.040 --> 01:31:16.100
man. I don't know what Will's talking

01:31:16.260 --> 01:31:18.020
about. If it tastes good then I like it.

01:31:18.780 --> 01:31:19.080
There we go.

01:31:20.000 --> 01:31:20.400
Exactly.

01:31:22.460 --> 01:31:23.420
Beer nerve alert.

01:31:24.780 --> 01:31:26.020
Well he said puckering so

01:31:26.320 --> 01:31:28.020
you know that might mean something else too so.

01:31:29.980 --> 01:31:57.660
All right, so let's move on to the second news item. Yeah, well, the first one was pretty controversial just in general because it's Metallica. Yeah, anytime Metallica comes up, it's going to be a while. So yesterday and today, there's a Dio auction happening where you can go and spend your hard-earned money on stage-used items and personal effects of Ronnie James Dio. I would have liked to have done that.

01:31:57.680 --> 01:32:26.940
I know Jay threatened to do that, but the face he's making is telling me he did not. Got a story to tell. And that is that I literally, my work day ended, I went through the catalog and picked out a couple of things I was interested. One of which was a baseball signed by Pete Rose to Ronnie James. I saw that. Wow. But, um, and I like Pete Rose, by the way. That's a twofer right there. Yeah. But, um, I, I'm an idiot. Basically I couldn't get on yesterday. And then I was like, you know what?

01:32:28.920 --> 01:32:34.400
I got into to sign up today and you had to fill out a paper application and

01:32:34.580 --> 01:32:40.720
whatever it was to send it ahead of time like or not application but like really yeah so there was no no doing

01:32:40.800 --> 01:32:44.800
it because some of the stuff they predicted was to go for 50 to 60 bucks and you know just some

01:32:44.900 --> 01:32:48.940
little skull he had on his desk well I'd love to have Ryan James deal fucking desk skull you know what I mean

01:32:49.720 --> 01:32:57.660
so I fucked up AJ who who was running this was it Wendy deal um what's the company called um

01:32:59.000 --> 01:33:27.600
It's got to be her, yeah. It's definitely the estate. I think it's for her. Yeah, is it for the, I know that there's the cancer thing. Because I have a friend who's involved with that because he was actually one of his really good friends. And I didn't know if she was behind this to make money for herself or to do it for the Cancer Foundation. I didn't read everything at the site, but to be honest with you, it did not mention it benefiting the cancer thing. So, yeah, I think it's going to her.

01:33:27.660 --> 01:33:33.860
pocket. I'm fine with that. That's fine. I'm sure she's got tons more

01:33:34.260 --> 01:33:39.060
stuff. Probably two of the cooler things that were for sale were the original artwork from

01:33:40.100 --> 01:33:54.520
Holy Diver and Sacred Heart. The Last in Line that Barry Jackson painted cover. It's from Killer Man. And there's a lot more to it, I believe, than is on the record cover. Yeah, I know. It extends out. It's like a panoramic almost. Yeah, it's really cool.

01:33:55.720 --> 01:34:24.420
It's too bad. Honestly, I would have spent up to $200 on something just to have something around here. I was going to do it, but when I saw the liner notes, it said it was just happening today. I'm like, well, we're going to miss it because I'm doing the podcast. My in-laws are in here. I didn't realize it was going on yesterday, too. I didn't research it. I just figured I'd go online, register, and just bid on stuff. Apparently not. I like that they're doing 666 items, too. I'm 100% positive I can only fit one arm into one of Dio's outfits.

01:34:25.720 --> 01:34:55.700
The sexy red corset shirt he wore is totally off the table. Yeah. No, to be sure. I mean, there was a few things like some of his swords, you know, the guy with a hundred swords, but, you know, have Ronnie James deal sword would have been bitching. You know, I was looking at his passport. I'm like, I'd like to have his passport. Yeah. Yeah. I saw that too. I was interested in his passport, you know, probably because it probably has all his tour stamps in it, you know, from all the different countries he played in. You could probably go, you know, go look at old tour dates and see that's exactly when he got to Romania, whatever. But Jay, how much

01:34:55.700 --> 01:35:25.340
What are those lower items going for? The smaller items? Anywhere from $50. It was doable. Yeah. Though I don't know what they actually went for. Those were the pre-arction estimates. And then, of course, the records, I think, like the artwork, they were predicting like tens and twenties of thousands of dollars. And I agree with you. It's fine with me that Wendy's getting the money. I assume she's getting the money. All right. So the rest of the news items are about new.

01:35:25.700 --> 01:35:55.640
releases and such. So let's blow through those so we can get to more fun stuff. Oh, except for the next one. Demons and Wizards are supposed to play Prog Power next year. I assume John knew about that. Yeah, I was there for the announcement the other day. And I guess this is kind of a big deal because if you like Power Metal, I think this is their first US show, is it not? Am I correct in saying that? I don't know, but it makes sense. And there's a record coming out too, by the way. Yeah, they've only put an album out every gazillion years.

01:35:55.700 --> 01:35:56.600
It seems like

01:35:56.800 --> 01:35:57.520
But it'll

01:35:58.220 --> 01:36:00.280
I'm looking forward to actually seeing them next year

01:36:00.480 --> 01:36:01.720
So I'm not a fan or anything

01:36:01.770 --> 01:36:02.980
I just want to see them on stage

01:36:03.360 --> 01:36:03.440
So

01:36:03.870 --> 01:36:04.000
Yeah

01:36:04.110 --> 01:36:05.600
I think they're playing Valken as well

01:36:06.300 --> 01:36:06.780
Oh cool

01:36:06.810 --> 01:36:08.420
Next year which probably is a little bit less surprising

01:36:08.620 --> 01:36:09.480
Than playing in the US

01:36:09.860 --> 01:36:10.000
Yeah

01:36:10.100 --> 01:36:11.360
I would definitely check it out

01:36:12.000 --> 01:36:13.400
I know fans have

01:36:13.780 --> 01:36:14.260
For years

01:36:14.430 --> 01:36:15.420
Been trying to get them

01:36:16.080 --> 01:36:17.480
They've been bugging Glenn to bring them

01:36:18.380 --> 01:36:18.720
It just

01:36:18.920 --> 01:36:19.980
I don't think it ever worked out

01:36:20.080 --> 01:36:21.060
Because those two bands

01:36:21.280 --> 01:36:22.800
They tour plain enough as it is

01:36:23.200 --> 01:36:23.340
Yeah

01:36:25.320 --> 01:36:25.680
So

01:36:25.680 --> 01:36:31.300
also playing the fest then do you think they played it two years ago yeah hansi's coming

01:36:31.490 --> 01:36:37.280
literally just to do this so yeah well i mean it's that happens a lot at the fest i mean

01:36:37.680 --> 01:36:41.840
that happened this year a couple people showed up that i didn't expect were going to show up just for a

01:36:41.840 --> 01:36:47.480
song or two cool traveled long distances too i mean the lead singer from fate's warning showed up to sing

01:36:47.580 --> 01:36:53.660
one song and he lives in barcelona now so oh cool yeah chris poland showed up to play with uh

01:36:53.700 --> 01:37:23.640
Redemption, which was very cool. If you know who Chris Poland is, the original guitarist in Megadeth. And they actually played Megadeth. They played Peace Sells. It's funny, it actually sounded better than Megadeth. So be on the lookout for John's Prog Power episode coming soon. I'm not really into power metal myself, so adding... I'm not either. It doesn't really do a lot for me. But if I was near Atlanta, I'd probably still check it out, because I like

01:37:23.660 --> 01:37:31.040
I like Sorcerer, I like Caligula's Horse, I saw they were on the bill, but I only really like a handful of power metal-ish bands.

01:37:31.400 --> 01:37:46.420
I don't like any. I like literally three, but the simple fact is I like Blind Guardian, and I do like some Iced Earth, and it's a rarity. I'm all for seeing a band if they're rare in terms of coming to somewhere.

01:37:48.780 --> 01:38:16.660
We watched bands probably at Death Fest when we were all together one time. We probably didn't care about. But hey, wow, this band's here. Let's check them out. Let's see what they're like. I agree with you. I'm not a big Power fan, but I think I'll watch just because it's very rare for the States. What are the prog bands that are going to be there? Threshold is playing, which is kind of cool because they never come to the States ever. A band that everyone's really excited about, Seventh Wonder. They're all right. I'm not big.

01:38:18.100 --> 01:38:47.060
Can I rephrase that? A band that everyone else is really excited about. Yeah. You know, I mean, the prog band that I'm really jazzed to see is coming as Psychotic Waltz, which is pretty rare. I didn't think that they were going to play there, but they're an older band from the 90s that was pretty instrumental in forming the genre. Let me just take stock of that. An older band from the 90s. That's where we are now. That's exactly where we are.

01:38:48.560 --> 01:38:58.260
I like some prog, but a lot of it to me, I instantly think when somebody says, hey, check out this prog band, I instantly think of 70s style keyboards.

01:38:58.740 --> 01:38:59.440
And you would be wrong.

01:39:01.620 --> 01:39:03.660
I don't need any moog in my metal.

01:39:03.980 --> 01:39:05.860
Back away slowly from John.

01:39:07.500 --> 01:39:13.340
I mean, I do like a lot of bands. I really, I love Persephone, you know, the older Opeth. I mentioned Yashira.

01:39:13.420 --> 01:39:13.840
I really lied.

01:39:13.940 --> 01:39:14.060
Yeah.

01:39:14.780 --> 01:39:15.360
And that's you.

01:39:15.800 --> 01:39:18.640
You're just answering what my response is.

01:39:18.740 --> 01:39:19.920
It doesn't always have to have.

01:39:20.340 --> 01:39:20.460
Right.

01:39:20.680 --> 01:39:20.760
You know.

01:39:22.180 --> 01:39:22.900
It doesn't.

01:39:23.000 --> 01:39:23.960
But a lot of them do.

01:39:24.140 --> 01:39:26.180
And it's almost like I don't know why they're called progressive.

01:39:26.270 --> 01:39:27.360
They should be called regressive.

01:39:28.140 --> 01:39:28.320
Well.

01:39:28.780 --> 01:39:30.840
Most 70s Prague is regressive.

01:39:31.520 --> 01:39:31.700
Yeah.

01:39:32.160 --> 01:39:32.260
So.

01:39:32.840 --> 01:39:33.440
Have you checked out.

01:39:33.600 --> 01:39:34.240
Hey Markisan.

01:39:34.320 --> 01:39:34.840
Have you checked out.

01:39:35.780 --> 01:39:36.640
One of the pod favorites.

01:39:37.120 --> 01:39:37.660
Perihelion ship.

01:39:39.400 --> 01:39:39.480
Yeah.

01:39:39.700 --> 01:39:40.240
I did actually.

01:39:40.390 --> 01:39:41.740
Because you guys interviewed them.

01:39:41.980 --> 01:39:43.300
I listened to that band.

01:39:43.380 --> 01:40:12.640
I didn't really do that much for me. Did you listen again? Hang up on him. Hang up on him now. This is a monumental moment in the podcast because we had to work with Will and he, on his own, kept listening and one day said, you know what? I mean, I always liked the music, but now it's starting to really click for me. It took a while, but he's driving the period. What's funny is now that I go back and listen to the first record,

01:40:12.740 --> 01:40:36.960
I love the first record where before I was sort of like, why do you guys like this so much? You finally crossed that bridge. It's good. It's just not a record that I would keep coming back to. It's not that I didn't like it. It just was fine to me. I recognized the musicianship in it. Jerking the penis. You're lucky Yanni's not around. Jay is my bitch.

01:40:44.700 --> 01:41:12.540
I would call them friends of the pod at this point. We have a kind of a spiritual affinity with those boys. Penis. Yeah. I also, you know, also just talking about rarities, I do want to drop real quick and say the rarity coming up in December is Trypticon playing the Celtic Frost set. Oh, gosh. No, that's what I'm talking about. By the way, Looch hit me up just yesterday or two days ago, like, asked about media passes at the hotel. I'm like,

01:41:12.740 --> 01:41:42.300
I don't think it's out yet. And Albert said he would get it to me when he gets to me. So I can't. Are you going? I thought you weren't going. No, no. But he's asking me because I know Albert better than he does. Actually, he had a call. But yeah. No, but you set it up last year. And you know, so you've got a little. I did. And I'll do the same thing for you guys this year. It's just that the media pass link is not up yet. And he hasn't told me about the hotels yet. I'm out, dude. And I, yeah. Yeah, I think Luke is.

01:41:42.740 --> 01:41:43.680
is very organized.

01:41:44.240 --> 01:41:46.500
And so I think it's frustrating to him that he can't.

01:41:47.160 --> 01:41:47.280
Yeah.

01:41:49.220 --> 01:41:52.760
You know, well, I mean, when one calls to mind the way you organize your hotel room.

01:41:53.120 --> 01:41:56.120
And so, I mean, he just wants to dot these I's and cross these T's.

01:41:56.240 --> 01:41:57.260
Because he reached out to me, too.

01:41:57.320 --> 01:41:58.700
And I meant to say.

01:41:59.740 --> 01:42:01.220
Jay, will you guys be staying together?

01:42:03.320 --> 01:42:04.500
Is it the snoring you're worried about?

01:42:05.260 --> 01:42:06.140
Oh, no, not at all.

01:42:06.200 --> 01:42:06.560
Don't worry.

01:42:06.700 --> 01:42:08.500
You're going to listen to death metal on Spotify.

01:42:08.880 --> 01:42:09.940
Not all night long.

01:42:10.180 --> 01:42:11.340
Not that either.

01:42:11.440 --> 01:42:11.840
We are, though.

01:42:11.920 --> 01:42:12.200
We are.

01:42:12.300 --> 01:42:42.140
I just want to let you know that you're going to be at the mall at the Yankee Candle store. Looch, I love you to death, brother. Just had to bring up the Yankee Candles. You know, John, Travis Burkholder, you know, my friend, he's going to be there. Looch is going to be there and we're going to share rooms and stuff. And we're going to hit the rainbow. We're going to try to hit Monkish Brewing while we're there. But yeah, I assume there'll be at least one trip.

01:42:42.300 --> 01:43:12.220
Yankee Candle. Oh, no, it's going to be your hotel room for the whole weekend. What's your favorite scent? You know what? Whatever Luch is. Luch is the dom. He makes the choices. Italian musk. Italian musk. I don't think anyone can understand what it was like when Jay and I showed up into Will and Luch's room. We opened the door and we both looked at him. What the fuck is that smell? It was like, I don't know,

01:43:12.300 --> 01:43:16.020
you guys ever go get a massage but it was like walking into a massage parlor really

01:43:16.600 --> 01:43:22.560
like some new age music to be yeah it's it's september i just now i'm finally getting the

01:43:22.610 --> 01:43:28.320
smell of that candle out of the studio from mid-year jay you should just get a burrito scented

01:43:28.540 --> 01:43:34.360
camera yeah i will yeah yeah yeah for sure or eat a burrito before you go into the room now that might be

01:43:34.540 --> 01:43:41.559
dangerous in front of an open flame well and i and we kid of course i mean i and he knows that i i

01:43:41.560 --> 01:44:11.420
I actually stay in pretty good touch with Looch. I'm looking forward to seeing you, buddy. Can't wait to have you out here. All right, let's move on. We're going to be here into the wee hours of the morning if we don't hurry up. I'm going to have to go to dinner soon. We'll get you out of here. All right, so Behemoth released a new song called Wolves of Siberia from their forthcoming album. I will just say this. I love both songs. I think they're great. I think they played Wolves of Siberia live. They did? Yeah. So that was a preview. They played it live.

01:44:11.580 --> 01:44:41.360
they played with Slayer. I'll say this, mark my words, this record's gonna fucking be great. Oh yeah. Nergal and Friends. Yep. Is it gonna knock off Yob for topping your list? Based on these two songs, it has all the potential in the world to do that. And actually, Yob is not my number one anymore. Oh. It's still there, it's still way up there, but there's something I decided to want. The Yob record's good. I have that on vinyl too. I dig this Behemoth track. I watched the video, which is basically a wolf attacking a woman in the woods.

01:44:41.720 --> 01:45:11.540
And some dude on YouTube wrote in the comments, if you watch this video backwards, you'll witness the heartwarming story of a wolf finding an injured woman in the woods, ricking her wounds, and showing her way out of the forest, which gave me a great laugh, and it made the song so much better. So thank you, YouTube Metal Guy. Thank you. That's hysterical. That is good. And that's exactly, because that's the whole video, is this what this wolf chase internet is. I say again, I think both of the

01:45:11.580 --> 01:45:12.320
songs are great.

01:45:13.200 --> 01:45:16.500
Haiti eternal released another song from their forthcoming albums called

01:45:16.680 --> 01:45:17.620
nothingness of bean.

01:45:18.400 --> 01:45:19.420
That was also a good track.

01:45:19.700 --> 01:45:20.160
I liked it.

01:45:20.920 --> 01:45:21.320
Yeah.

01:45:21.540 --> 01:45:22.640
I like this track,

01:45:23.160 --> 01:45:23.540
but it,

01:45:23.660 --> 01:45:23.880
it,

01:45:24.040 --> 01:45:26.700
I feel like you could put this thing on morbid angels,

01:45:26.880 --> 01:45:27.080
kingdoms,

01:45:27.280 --> 01:45:28.320
to stain record.

01:45:28.500 --> 01:45:28.660
And you,

01:45:28.880 --> 01:45:30.220
a lot of people wouldn't even know that's a difference.

01:45:30.400 --> 01:45:30.480
Yeah.

01:45:30.700 --> 01:45:31.080
Interesting.

01:45:31.520 --> 01:45:32.080
I'm okay with that.

01:45:32.460 --> 01:45:33.200
It sounds exactly.

01:45:33.480 --> 01:45:34.080
And that's fine,

01:45:34.220 --> 01:45:34.420
you know,

01:45:34.520 --> 01:45:35.280
but it was this weird,

01:45:35.380 --> 01:45:35.520
like,

01:45:35.720 --> 01:45:35.780
wow,

01:45:35.880 --> 01:45:37.460
it's just like morbid angel.

01:45:38.980 --> 01:46:08.200
Bloodbath also released a new song from their forthcoming album, The Arrow of Satan is Drawn. The song is called Blood Aside, and the album is coming out on October 26th. I thought it was all right. I mean, you know, in terms of Bloodbath, I prefer the Michael ears, but it's cool. Yeah, I definitely, it sounded a lot like, it's that HM2 pedal.

01:46:08.960 --> 01:46:38.860
It had that harken back to the old entombed. Obviously, it's Swedish death metal. It sounded like Swedish death metal, but even more so, it sounded more like the old-school, 90s Swedish death metal. This had Jeff Walker on it and two other guys on it, two other famous death metal singers. Jeff Walker, is he from Cancer? Karkas. Karkas. The guy from Cancer, and then someone else on it.

01:46:40.120 --> 01:47:08.940
I like the guitar tone on that track but there was a lot of riffs which is in the song it felt like I wanted to linger on one riff for longer so it didn't do as much for me it was a little too frantic for me then we have Arsis getting ready to release their new album visitant on November 2nd and they released a video for the song tricking the gods again I thought it was alright I don't know I think I'm

01:47:08.960 --> 01:47:38.940
I might like the earlier stuff a little better but I'll reserve judgment till I hear the whole album then this one I was really excited about and I know at least a couple other people that are excited about it the ocean they're going to be releasing fan fanozoic one part one a paleozoic on November 2nd two-part album that's I assume they're doing it like Marvel does their movies a little bit now a little bit

01:47:41.080 --> 01:48:08.920
I think volume two comes out in 2020. Yeah. So like another year and change. Um, but the song they put out was awesome. So I'm definitely looking forward to that. Yeah. So it's fucking epic, man. I love the ocean. Uh, it's been a palagio a lot. Yeah. So that song was really good, but I just love as someone who does a lot of research on the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic area. I really appreciate it.

01:48:08.980 --> 01:48:15.360
all the earth history concept behind the oceans album so it's super unique you know yeah so yeah i'm

01:48:15.460 --> 01:48:23.160
definitely down for this me too likewise the new cycroptic album as the kingdom drowns is coming out on

01:48:23.340 --> 01:48:31.720
november 9th we just got the promo for that um and you know it is what it is i like it tech death is not

01:48:31.820 --> 01:48:37.340
really my thing again it's like it's just like there's just too much going on i like to focus on a riff or

01:48:37.360 --> 01:49:06.580
something in the song that I can really grab onto. So I know a lot of people like this, and obviously you have to be pretty good musicians to play Tech Death, but it's not really my bag. Sure. Then there's Dark Throne. They're apparently working on a new album. There aren't any details other than that they've started working on a couple of songs, but I'm looking forward to that whenever that happens. Same. Yeah, black metal royalty, man. You can't miss that. Not at all. All right, let's get into new releases.

01:49:07.340 --> 01:49:09.700
This week's new releases

01:49:10.600 --> 01:49:12.280
Yeah, they are

01:49:13.160 --> 01:49:16.120
Spend your hard-earned money now

01:49:16.280 --> 01:49:19.120
First one is a band that we've had on the podcast before

01:49:19.700 --> 01:49:21.020
from the UK, All Father

01:49:21.740 --> 01:49:24.560
and their new album, And All Will Be Desolation

01:49:24.800 --> 01:49:25.940
This is their second album

01:49:26.500 --> 01:49:28.160
Doom Sludge type metal

01:49:29.520 --> 01:49:30.720
A lot of hardcore in there

01:49:30.940 --> 01:49:33.720
Yeah, the music is very Doom

01:49:34.340 --> 01:49:35.940
with Tom's vocals being

01:49:36.500 --> 01:50:05.900
with a hardcore background. It's a really nice mix, personally. I saw Angry Metal Guy gave this four and a half, and the reviewers said this could be album of the year. I loved it. It's a freaking ripper from start to finish. It is. Pommeling, kick-ass riffs. They have cool tempo changes in there. Man, I was surprised by the subtle variation in the songs and the vocals, too. There's a lot of variation in the vocals. And I never really heard this band before, but this is definitely an album.

01:50:06.460 --> 01:50:35.920
for the pits. Their live shows have to be the same because this thing is a rip. I thought it was way more consistent than their first album. It just sounds like they're hitting their stride where they want to be. Not so much if they can do it. It just sounds like they're comfortable. It was good. I liked it. They always surprised me. Not that it should be a surprise. Like, oh man, these guys suck. Wait, they don't suck anymore? I don't mean that. I mean that you kind of think you know what you're going to

01:50:35.940 --> 01:50:39.920
get and then when you listen to it it's it's more than you thought you were

01:50:39.920 --> 01:50:46.300
gonna get any even the the production sounded it just everything seemed to gel perfectly on this

01:50:46.440 --> 01:50:49.960
album so i don't know where it'll be if it's on my list you know i have to listen to it more but

01:50:50.140 --> 01:50:54.440
it's got potential to i think be on a lot of lists this year for not just us but everybody

01:50:55.560 --> 01:51:00.120
oh yeah i think it might have the best riffs i've heard on a record this year i mean they're just

01:51:00.260 --> 01:51:05.920
really bombastic it's awesome without being over the top right exactly it feels more natural

01:51:05.920 --> 01:51:06.540
this album for them.

01:51:07.700 --> 01:51:09.580
Yeah, I'm going to have to go back and check out the other records,

01:51:09.720 --> 01:51:11.440
because like I said, I have not really listened to this band.

01:51:11.440 --> 01:51:12.260
The first one's great.

01:51:12.500 --> 01:51:13.800
It's just I think this one's a lot better.

01:51:14.040 --> 01:51:15.640
Yeah, they just sort of stepped up their game on this one.

01:51:16.140 --> 01:51:16.960
And the first one is good.

01:51:17.040 --> 01:51:18.480
I mean, we thought it was good enough to have them on the show.

01:51:19.640 --> 01:51:19.960
Yeah.

01:51:20.800 --> 01:51:24.900
This next one, you know, it may not be qualified for the year-end list,

01:51:25.140 --> 01:51:26.400
but it's worth a listen.

01:51:27.780 --> 01:51:30.440
That's the new Clutch album, A Book of Bad Decisions.

01:51:30.600 --> 01:51:33.420
It's their 12th album, as Will throws me double middle fingers.

01:51:34.800 --> 01:51:35.800
Why don't you take this one, Will?

01:51:38.980 --> 01:52:05.480
Yeah, where do I start? I love Clutch. Yeah, anyway, so moving on now. I love Clutch. Clutch goes through these periodic changes in their sounds. I mean, it always sounds like Clutch, but sometimes they're a little bit more bluesy, sometimes it's a little bit more metal, sometimes a little bit more just straight rock and roll. And this album, to me, is the last two albums, Earth Rocker and Psychic Warfare, were definitely more on the metal spectrum.

01:52:05.840 --> 01:52:35.660
of their sound. And this one goes back to more. Yeah. Yes. I know. And then this one, I think, goes back to more of the rock. Funk. Virgin. Yeah. Oh, yeah. It's funky, groovy. It's a lot of fun. There's like a whole brass section in one of the songs. I mean, I love it. I mean, I love Clutch. I love this. This will have to be probably my top honorable mention because dare I put on Clutch. No, no, no. Will?

01:52:35.820 --> 01:52:36.920
Put it on your list.

01:52:37.240 --> 01:52:38.460
No, because no.

01:52:38.630 --> 01:52:38.820
No, no, no.

01:52:39.220 --> 01:52:40.460
I'm not putting it on because there's no way.

01:52:40.820 --> 01:52:41.380
I love Joel.

01:52:41.560 --> 01:52:42.940
Joel, if you're listening, I love you.

01:52:43.900 --> 01:52:45.380
But your new album is not that metal.

01:52:45.570 --> 01:52:46.220
I love it.

01:52:46.500 --> 01:52:46.980
Put it on.

01:52:47.020 --> 01:52:48.220
George puts it on his list.

01:52:48.740 --> 01:52:50.920
I want you guys to put them on because remember what happened?

01:52:51.380 --> 01:52:53.400
Remember when Looch put some of his albums on his list?

01:52:53.470 --> 01:52:56.160
It just gave me fucking free reign for 25 picks.

01:52:59.060 --> 01:52:59.880
Put it on, baby.

01:53:01.020 --> 01:53:01.740
Number one.

01:53:04.340 --> 01:53:05.340
Yeah, I don't think it.

01:53:05.480 --> 01:53:35.440
This shouldn't be on a metal list to me, but it's a great record. I love it. Why is this guy going here? Hey. Go the distance. I mean, do another list. Do a rock list or something. It's not metal. Yeah, exactly. This is pain. I love the song In Walks Barbarella particularly because I really love that cheese ball of a film and then there's a new Barbarella comic that's coming out that I'm really digging. So I like that they do these kind of pop culture references in a lot of

01:53:35.480 --> 01:54:05.440
their songs and I'm a big clutch fan. I actually wore a work shirt with a werewolf holding a top hat and I got a lot of compliments at the Rose City Comic Con that I just attended and ended up being in a lot of discussions with metalheads about about clutch. So they always bring something a little bit different and I love that about the band. Fun. I like how they always have some sort of like dare I say period piece in their album. So this one's Emily Dickinson which was kind of cool. They did one about Abraham Lincoln and

01:54:05.840 --> 01:54:34.640
John Wilkes Booth. They're also just workhorses, man. More power to them. Album tour, album tour, they don't stop. And the thing I like about it, I mean, they're local to the D.C. area. They're from Maryland, Germantown, Maryland, I think. Hagerstown, I thought. Is it Hagerstown? I think so. But there are very, whether you think they're metal or rock or blues or whatever, but no matter what, no one can argue with the fact that they're very talented musicians and very talented songwriters. Word. Oh, yeah.

01:54:36.200 --> 01:55:03.900
I don't know why I said word, but you know, I agree. They are dope. All right. Next up, we have the new Conan album, Existential Void Guardian. It's their fourth album. It's good. It's, you know, it, I'll tell you something. It's eclipsed by the Allfather. So it's, it's, unfortunately, it's came out at the same time because they're, they're of a type and it's good. Well, it's not all father. Good.

01:55:05.480 --> 01:55:35.440
to the Allfather record. But it is good. It's good. And I need to spend a little more time with it. But because I kind of like them. Yeah. I love Conan. So we saw that like not this year, but last year, I think. I saw him at Atlas Brew Works. Oh, yeah. Yeah, too. Yeah. I really like this record a lot. I wasn't a really huge fan of Conan because I feel like the earlier albums, the kind of tracks kind of blended together. But I think they really found their groove on this record and the last one, Revengeance. So they have that really recognized

01:55:36.120 --> 01:55:36.600
Doom sound.

01:55:37.450 --> 01:55:39.580
And they keep doing that on Existential Void Guardian.

01:55:39.690 --> 01:55:44.060
But they just do a little bit more on this LP than I've heard before.

01:55:44.330 --> 01:55:45.460
Like more up-tempo stuff.

01:55:45.700 --> 01:55:48.440
And I love the video for Volt Thrower.

01:55:49.020 --> 01:55:52.100
It's like this throwback to the old Lord of the Rings animated film.

01:55:52.200 --> 01:55:52.980
Have you guys seen it?

01:55:53.260 --> 01:55:53.760
From 78?

01:55:54.460 --> 01:55:55.320
The video is awesome.

01:55:55.330 --> 01:55:57.240
I watched it like 12 times.

01:55:57.600 --> 01:55:58.160
It's so good.

01:55:58.580 --> 01:56:01.740
It's one of the best videos I've seen in a long time, I think.

01:56:01.760 --> 01:56:01.920
Awesome.

01:56:02.400 --> 01:56:02.460
Cool.

01:56:02.540 --> 01:56:32.520
The only thing I don't like about this album is the fill-in song, the pain cantation. I'm not down with short instrumental breaks. I'm not buying an album to hear your warm-up jams, Conan. Leave that shit on the cutting room floor and just come at me with the full riddle of steel. I think it's becoming more and more common where the track one is some two or three-minute intro thing. I'm like, really? You should just knock down the price of this album by a dollar because

01:56:33.060 --> 01:57:00.360
I don't need this. George has very famously said a million times, skip the track two because track one's a waste of time. It's becoming more and more prevalent. It's a joke, dude. I do skip them because if it's a minute and a half or less, I know it's just going to be bullshit. Exactly. Unless it's Pig Destroyer. Which, by the way, I like that. I do love that fucking intro, though. The Pig Destroyer intro is fucking cool. It is.

01:57:02.560 --> 01:57:31.960
They have the new Deicide album, Overtures of Blasphemy. It's their 12th album. And I like it. Yeah, people are saying good things. I haven't heard it. Yeah, it's pretty good. Sounds deicide-y. Yep. Yep. Deicide-ish. Glenn's doing what Glenn does. Yeah. It's solid, man. And this band isn't always delivered for me, but I think this is one of the better records they've done in the last decade, maybe. Yeah, they're coming back for me. I like the first few albums.

01:57:35.480 --> 01:58:00.720
I've been going back and checking out the last few albums and I'm like, ah, yes, no makes me too bad. I think the last three have been good. And I forget what was the, not the pen ultimate, but what is it? The trend ultimate? I don't know, whatever, the third or last one. It's had that song conviction on it. And I just thought it was like the greatest deicide song ever recorded. Cool. Then we have. You can hit the crickets now.

01:58:03.260 --> 01:58:32.520
Then we have the new Infera Brew album, Serament. We've been talking about that. Can't talk about it enough. Those guys are amazing dudes, and they put out an amazing album, no matter what the fucking British rag Metal Hammer seems to think. They give it a 5 out of 10. Yeah, it doesn't matter. Angry Metal Guy liked it. They thought it was good. We like it. First of all, of all those three, the only thing that matters is that we like it because

01:58:32.540 --> 01:58:36.340
Sometimes we like Angry Metal Guy when they agree with us, and then they're assholes when they don't.

01:58:36.740 --> 01:58:42.640
Well, no. That's the relationship we have with them, Will, that we bring them when we like them when they don't. We trash them. Yes, I know.

01:58:43.540 --> 01:58:49.900
Yeah, I like Angry Metal Guy, but lately, their reviews of Death Metal albums, I think, have been way off.

01:58:50.580 --> 01:58:55.700
Yeah, they're all over the map in general, too. That's the other thing. It's not like a consistent voice there.

01:58:55.810 --> 01:58:56.620
Yeah, not like us.

01:58:56.620 --> 01:58:57.380
We have so many reviewers.

01:59:01.260 --> 01:59:29.940
But I like this album. I really like the slower parts more than the faster black metal parts. Like the song Draped in the Sky, I think has a really cool groove to it. I really dug that quite a bit. Yeah, it's a good album. I like it. Yeah. We need to get them down here and play at Atlas, Will. Yeah. I need to go to this Atlas. Yes, you do. Galen was down here for NDF. Talked to him for a bit.

01:59:31.080 --> 02:00:00.740
You're up in Boston, right? Yeah. That's not that far. Next up. Yeah. Come. Hey, Marcus and come to Atlas. Okay. You have to buy a ticket. I will not get you in for free, but I will get you a free beer because all the ticket sales go to the band. So I pay for, I work there. I organize the shows. I pay for a ticket because all the money goes to the bands, but I'll get you a free beer. Okay. Or two.

02:00:01.080 --> 02:00:01.580
3 or 4.

02:00:05.100 --> 02:00:05.500
Awesome.

02:00:06.440 --> 02:00:10.120
Next up, the new Christian album, Scourge of the Enthroned.

02:00:10.680 --> 02:00:11.460
Brazilian death metal.

02:00:12.340 --> 02:00:12.800
I like it.

02:00:13.200 --> 02:00:13.760
Yeah, it's good.

02:00:14.360 --> 02:00:14.700
I bought it.

02:00:15.300 --> 02:00:19.740
I feel like Christian is one of those bands that nobody really talks about, but they're always pretty solid.

02:00:20.180 --> 02:00:21.000
Like kind of a sleeper.

02:00:21.080 --> 02:00:22.680
Yeah, they're just always there.

02:00:23.760 --> 02:00:26.400
Just like 3 brothers hanging out making death metal.

02:00:26.620 --> 02:00:28.620
Yeah, I saw them a long time ago at Jack's.

02:00:29.640 --> 02:00:30.820
Is it actually 3 brothers?

02:00:30.960 --> 02:01:00.900
Yeah. Oh, cool. Yeah, this is solid. I kind of feel the same way about this as I did with the Dayside album. It's just a really solid death metal effort. Yeah. Then we've got the new Pig Destroyer album, Headcage. I dig it. Yeah, I like it. Same. I don't know that I would call it grindcore, at least not a good chunk of it. No, no. Same? Yeah, it's not. I mean, but it's, I mean, they evolve. It's still heavy as all fucking get out. I mean, that, so I don't know.

02:01:00.940 --> 02:01:29.840
The Speed, it's okay. They took a couple fucking... They're in some of the lower gears of this one. I mean, it is one of the heavier records of the year already. Yeah. Yeah, it's interesting because when they came out with that single, was it Army of Cops? Army of Cops. That had the very much the nu metal kind of corn kind of groove in it, and then people were sort of... or nu metal groove, whatever it was, and people were losing their shit about it. Even I was like, whoa, this is a little weird.

02:01:30.940 --> 02:01:57.480
And then, when you listen to the whole album, those few riffs where you hear that sort of new metal, metalcore sort of tone or whatever in it is forgotten when you hear the whole album. And I like that song, too. It also fits into the record. It is a good record. I mean, it's not Prawler in the Yard or anything like that, but I mean, it's going to be on my list. I'll tell you that. It'll definitely be on my list.

02:01:57.480 --> 02:02:27.420
I love the bass tones on the record and it's really good. The production's awesome. Yeah, it's really great because I'm not really big into bands who do short songs. Like I'm not a big fan of nails, you know, bands like that. But this, I was surprised by how much I really dug the tracks on here because it's very clear riffs on it. Just on that bass. Holy shit. It's really well done. Yeah. It's interesting you said about the production because I guarantee this was done in Scott in the basement.

02:02:27.500 --> 02:02:57.460
is Scott Hall Home in Bethesda, Maryland. They do all the producing, always have, do all the producing and the recording in his house. This is definitely the best produced record they've put out, too, by the way. I mean, it is. There's a level of professionalism to the production that kind of lacks on pretty much all the other records. It's perfect for this album. I listened to it on headphones, too, and it was great. Yeah, me too. I frequently take a long

02:02:57.480 --> 02:03:27.180
or longish walk after dinner in the evenings. And I do it, A, to walk, but also listen to music. And it just, I've got these Bose noise can, it sounds so good in headphones. Did you guys see the video that the lead singer, JR, and Blake Harrison, the noise sampling guy, they went on the mall, the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Yeah, yeah. And they just stopped tourists and they said, hey, you know, here's our new album, what do you think? It's pretty fucking funny. It's worth a listen.

02:03:28.960 --> 02:03:56.660
They have a strangely, and I'm not necessarily saying I agree with it, but they have this weird transcendent quality. And what I mean is, this is one of those weird metal records that NPR reviewed and called it art. I don't know. There's bands like that that somehow the more intellectual crowd latches onto. And people tend to feel that way about Pig Destroyer, which is fine with me. Because they are, I think, a bunch of bright fucking guys. But also, by the way, playing Festival Fest.

02:03:56.780 --> 02:04:25.160
Well, they do a lot with very short songs. Yeah. You know, that's definitely an art to it. Yeah. And I do dig, by the way, Army of Cops, I think it's a great fucking song, but I like the whole thing. Next up, we have The Skull and their second album, The Endless Road Turns Dark. This is Eric Wagner from Trouble. I think he may be the only Trouble person in the band now. No, there's two of them. The drummer quit recently. No.

02:04:26.520 --> 02:04:54.680
Yeah, so the drummer, Oli, he's now high up in the... Allagash. Yeah, he's high up somewhere in the leadership of Allagash Brewing up in Portland, Maine. But it's, I forget his name, but it's Howitzon or something like that. One of the guitar players also originally from Trouble. Eric Wagner, yeah. Yeah. And everybody's been talking how much they like it.

02:04:56.500 --> 02:05:25.300
For those of us who've listened to it on the podcast, which would be everybody. I listened to it today. Whole thing. Front to back. I got it on vinyl. You got it on vinyl already? Amazon. Two days shipping. It was awesome. And I bet it sounds great on vinyl, too. It does. It sounds better on vinyl. It kind of reminded me of Goatsnake a little bit. I need to spin it a few more times because I only got to a

02:05:30.180 --> 02:05:55.100
It's kind of like 80s Black Sabbath with a different singer. Like if they had hired somebody right after Ronnie James Dio, it's got that 80s quality too, that 80s style doom. But like mid-80s, not early 80s underground doom. Considering it's an amalgamation of all the different periods of trouble. That they've done, yeah. That they've done, yeah. It's strong. It's a really strong record.

02:05:55.320 --> 02:06:24.500
Yeah. Both albums have been good. I like the music a lot. I think the music's really good. Don't go there. I think the vocals leave a little bit to be desired. I think Eric Wagner really, really phoned it in. He was like, I'm not going to bother singing. I'm just going to talk through every song. But despite that, it's still pretty good. Are you listening to a bootleg copy of The Skull from Trouble from 1985?

02:06:24.520 --> 02:06:53.420
This is him singing. I'm gonna do a song and it's gonna be I'm gonna sing. Okay. And this is how I'm talking. So here's the key question. Have you never listened to Trouble? Because nothing's changed in 35 years. It doesn't sound anything like the way he was all he would sing. Every once in a while he gets the high notes and there he's singing and it's good. I like it. And like the second to last song on the album he actually puts forth some singing.

02:06:53.960 --> 02:07:23.860
I'm just like stop talking dude. Anyone who's listening to this podcast complete disregard George 100%. Or listen to the man talk. I will give George a little bit of credit but I think it's misplaced anger. Nah, nah. I'm not saying I dislike it. I just wish he did more. I think what it is is that the tempo of the songs are a lot slower in the skull than they were on Trouble. So I think the vocal style that he's doing matches the song.

02:07:23.940 --> 02:07:25.180
But I think they used to go

02:07:26.700 --> 02:07:28.040
occasionally faster when they were

02:07:28.100 --> 02:07:30.000
in the trouble. Therefore, he had the more

02:07:30.280 --> 02:07:31.400
dynamic range in his vocals.

02:07:31.620 --> 02:07:34.200
And that's my beef, is that he's got a good voice.

02:07:34.920 --> 02:07:36.600
I'm just disappointed that he's...

02:07:36.640 --> 02:07:36.860
I don't know.

02:07:37.060 --> 02:07:39.540
I mean, if I was going to listen to somebody

02:07:39.900 --> 02:07:42.200
talk into a song, it sounds good.

02:07:43.080 --> 02:07:44.800
But see, the thing is, it reminds me

02:07:44.880 --> 02:07:47.020
of the album Simple Mind Condition from Trouble,

02:07:47.280 --> 02:07:49.240
where he did the same exact thing, so...

02:07:49.920 --> 02:07:52.260
George is making it sound like it's a spoken word album.

02:07:52.260 --> 02:07:52.540
It is!

02:07:55.040 --> 02:08:22.080
I think it sounded pretty good. I didn't have enough time with it, but it's still a good album. All I'm saying is I wish he was singing a little more. He is singing. I don't know what you listen to. A dude talking. But anyway, let's move on. Did you have the news on when you were listening? It's like Blue Fucking Reed over here. I can't rather. Are you watching Hurricane News or something? Smiley face emoji.

02:08:23.260 --> 02:08:51.640
So then there's the new Voivet album. I just gotta say the skull always has a very special place in my heart because they played at Atlas on Super Bowl night earlier this year when the Eagles won. So the skull waited till the game was over to start playing which allowed me to stay at home with my children to watch the game and then drive like a maniac to Atlas and catch 90% of the skull set. That's a pretty good start.

02:08:52.760 --> 02:09:22.220
Did you see them well when they played? Are you being facetious? No. Yeah, sorry. Did you finally get the joke? No, never mind. Was he talking between songs or just during the songs? Oh, God. No, George, he sings between the songs. Just kidding. Geez. All right. Back to Voivod or Voivod? Voivod, The Wake, their 14th album. It's good. I like it.

02:09:23.920 --> 02:09:52.720
It's a return to their old form. It's weird how much this dude channels Piggy. It's crazy. Yeah. It's like scary, to be honest with you, dude. Because if nothing else, I'm like, there were two of these guys. It's like more Piggy than Piggy. Also, you know that first, I like the whole thing, but there's places in it where it strangely reminds me of the more fluid and melodic parts of

02:09:52.740 --> 02:10:21.180
of your average Mastodon record. Especially that first song. Listen to it with that in your mind and you'll catch what I'm saying. But it's really good. And it's a concept record. Which, well, that's neither here nor there. But yeah, they did a good job on this one. Yeah, very good. And that'll be out next week. I just put it on there because we're not potting next week. And we all have heard it. Yeah, we got the promo. We got the promo.

02:10:23.280 --> 02:10:50.360
All right, why don't we move on to Skullcrushers? This time it's going to be Jay, and he is taking on Led Zeppelin. And I did no studying whatsoever, but I was a Zeppelin freak in high school. And I still love Zeppelin. I mean, I always have him, but having read biographies, watched various things, I just feel like there's not too much you can hit me. I don't know, but we'll see what you got. Can we start with one thing first, Jay? Yeah.

02:10:52.740 --> 02:11:22.580
three favorite Zeppelin albums, because this is always a big deal for fans of Zeppelin, which period they like. So I'm just curious what your two favorite ones are by them. Well, they're from two different periods, but it would be Zeppelin 1 and Physical Graffiti. Those are good answers. I fucking love Zeppelin, man. I do too. I was a huge fan through grade school, high school, and college, and they were my favorite band for the longest time. Yeah, exactly.

02:11:22.740 --> 02:11:52.580
And just there's not much they could do to tarnish their legacy for me. So. You know what's funny for me is real quick is all the kids when I was in high school who wore the Led Zeppelin shirts were all like the stoners. And I always thought like, well, I just never got into Led Zeppelin. Like I heard their songs and the songs were okay, but I never got into them because like, I don't want to associate with all those guys who are stoners. Because I don't want to associate with me. Yeah. Cause he's like, I want to.

02:11:54.860 --> 02:12:22.720
I want to associate with the guys wearing all the Metallica and Anthrax and Megadeth and Slayer shirts. Those guys, they're living in the past. They're just stoned out of their mind all the time. Yeah, fair enough. They might have even been kind of a quiet secret to me in high school because I was always wearing the Slayer shirts. I don't know that I went around and bragged everybody how much I loved Led Zeppelin, but I did. I didn't have a problem telling anybody. Fuck you, man. I love the...

02:12:23.680 --> 02:12:52.460
I'm a big fan of Zeppelin too. I have been since the beginning. My dad introduced me to them. We'll come at me, bro. We'll start with Markisan. Okay, well I started with a softball one because I didn't know how much you'd know. I'm sure you're going to get all of my questions. Before Led Zeppelin. The New York Birds. No, Robert Plant and John Bonham were in another band together. What was the name of that band? Yes, I love it. That's hard.

02:12:52.740 --> 02:12:53.800
Oh, softball!

02:12:54.620 --> 02:12:55.280
It is softball.

02:12:55.620 --> 02:12:56.440
Is it...

02:12:57.160 --> 02:12:58.220
My other ones are way harder.

02:12:58.560 --> 02:12:59.500
Are you looking at the ceiling?

02:12:59.720 --> 02:13:00.780
This is going to be a shit show.

02:13:01.640 --> 02:13:01.780
Yeah.

02:13:02.140 --> 02:13:02.700
Did Robert...

02:13:02.820 --> 02:13:03.720
No, no, I'm good.

02:13:03.900 --> 02:13:08.980
This is more obscure than you think, but is Robert Plant, did he use it later as one of his bands?

02:13:09.920 --> 02:13:10.620
He did, yes.

02:13:10.920 --> 02:13:11.800
Is it Strange Sensation?

02:13:12.440 --> 02:13:12.700
No.

02:13:13.040 --> 02:13:15.140
Okay, I know he used it, but I can't remember what it was.

02:13:15.560 --> 02:13:17.020
So, honestly, I don't remember it.

02:13:17.440 --> 02:13:17.940
Should I tell you?

02:13:18.340 --> 02:13:18.520
Yeah.

02:13:19.060 --> 02:13:19.760
Band of Joy.

02:13:20.180 --> 02:13:21.180
Band of fucking joy.

02:13:21.400 --> 02:13:21.820
God damn it.

02:13:21.860 --> 02:13:49.960
Come on, man. I know. You're right. That was my softball. The Band of Joy thing actually just happened. No, no, no, no, man. I'm going to fucking fuck you up. But Band of Joy, that actually was one of the more recent things he did. So I should have remembered that. Yeah, that was my softball. So here's, do I do all three or do I just do one? Yeah, do all three. Okay. The first vinyl pressing of the album, Led Zeppelin III, in 1970, featured a quote inscribed to the Dead Rags.

02:13:51.160 --> 02:14:19.920
What was the quote and who is it attributed to? You got who? Aleister Crowley. Aleister Crowley, which is actually how it's pronounced. And it's do what that will. And it probably said. What was the second part of it, though? Shall be the whole of the law. No. Oh, wait, do what that will, shall be the whole of the law. It's not there? No. Is it love is the law of love under will? No. Do what that will. Fail! Well, what is it then?

02:14:19.960 --> 02:14:49.900
So-moat-be-it. Well, that's their own fucking take on it. I actually have one of those pressings. You did good, though. I'm surprised you got that right away. We'll keep them coming. Okay. There are four symbols that appear on the inner sleeve of Led Zeppelin IV, one for each of the four band members. But there is also a fifth symbol below the track titles. What is the fifth symbol, and who was represented by it? Peter, the manager.

02:14:49.980 --> 02:15:19.840
What's his fucking name? Peter, Peter Pumpkin Eater? Big fat fucking guy. Peter, it'll come to me. You gotta get spit fat fuckers. I'll tell you that's wrong. Oh, it is? Okay, let's hear it. Oh, you're hitting me hard. This is good. I won't get it. I won't get it. It's Sandy Denny who did the vocal contribution to the Battle of Evermore. He just fucked my question. It's three equilateral triangles. It's a symbol for the Godhead. Sorry, man. That's all right. I'm enjoying this. Don't worry.

02:15:20.380 --> 02:15:47.740
Trust me, I'm going to get more right than I get wrong, so I'm not afraid of these. Famous last words. Oh, boy. Don't worry, Jay. I have all softballs for you. His balls are always soft for you. Was that everything, Marcus? I thought he only had one. No, that's Hitler. They're digestible. Undigestible scrotum. You got another one, or was that it? Not that anybody who wants to digest will scrotum ever.

02:15:49.980 --> 02:16:19.880
Sure. Not again, anyway. Except Jay. Yeah. Yeah. No, I learned that lesson the hard way. All right. Are we up to Matt now? Go, Matt. Go. Jay, you know how this starts. Let's do... What was the first Zeppelin album I ever heard? And from that, what was the first Zeppelin song I heard? I was surprised if it wasn't Zeppelin for. For album, think obvious. For song.

02:16:19.980 --> 02:16:20.540
I think logical

02:16:32.381 --> 02:16:37.559
I like the logical hint because logical says rock and roll but the

02:16:38.990 --> 02:16:43.340
um that could also be stairway to heaven because a lot because you know rock or no a black dog

02:16:45.219 --> 02:16:49.940
yep got it yeah all right logical choice being it was the opening track so

02:16:49.980 --> 02:17:19.880
Yep. Perfect. So, Marcus, to build on what you were talking about, those four symbols, right here, who does this one represent? That's Jimmy Page. That's Zoso. Perfect. Got it. Okay. Also, that record is sometimes called Zoso for no good reason, but whatever. Nice. Yeah, I've actually heard it called that, and why is that? Just because that symbol's out there. I think it just stuck, yeah. It's actually a self-titled record. It's not actually called Zoso.

02:17:19.960 --> 02:17:49.900
It's untitled, yeah. So people just reached for names, and that's the only other word on there. Like the Black Album. It isn't really titled the Black Album. To be sure. Just called it probably shit. But Black Album's shorter, so. Or the Black Album. I feel a little better. And I will say those are softballs, but keep them coming. So actually all of mine are probably softballs. In terms of their names,

02:17:49.960 --> 02:18:19.620
name, Led, why did they choose to omit the letter A from the word Led? That's a good question. And my answer is not confirmed, but. Okay, well, that's even better, but. Yep. Were they afraid people were going to pronounce it Leeds, that one? Got it. What British band, what other British band stole that type of spelling for their name? Def Leppard. Gosh.

02:18:19.960 --> 02:18:20.719
D. Flippard.

02:18:23.860 --> 02:18:28.500
Led Zeppelin had been credited with a major impact on the nature of the music business,

02:18:28.920 --> 02:18:32.660
particularly in the development of blank and blank.

02:18:33.300 --> 02:18:37.599
So these are two, I would call it, like sub-genres of music.

02:18:40.139 --> 02:18:40.599
Any idea?

02:18:44.201 --> 02:18:46.960
That's, can you kind of push me in a direction there?

02:18:46.960 --> 02:18:47.920
Because I'm not quite sure.

02:18:50.401 --> 02:19:15.559
One of them, the initials are AOR. Okay. Album-oriented rock. Okay. And the other one is, well, I'll let you guess, but it's more about location versus music. Location versus music. I'm not sure if I understand. Where the music takes place versus the music itself.

02:19:18.559 --> 02:19:48.200
People often lament that there's no bands that can fill a blank anymore. Arena or stadium. Both are correct. Okay, fair enough. Nice. Sorry, I thought he was gonna say butthole. I'm there. Or condom. What was considered to be the long play single that took the throne from Stairway to Heaven?

02:19:48.559 --> 02:19:51.620
And it because there was one was the first big seven minute

02:19:51.820 --> 02:19:53.580
single. We're supposed to be asking you questions.

02:19:54.020 --> 02:19:55.620
No, but I see if you guys can guess this.

02:19:55.700 --> 02:19:57.600
Just think like what was a big long

02:19:57.980 --> 02:20:00.260
popular rock song from somebody else from somebody else.

02:20:00.980 --> 02:20:01.660
Hotel California.

02:20:03.280 --> 02:20:04.580
No, it was before that.

02:20:05.180 --> 02:20:05.680
Oh, before that.

02:20:05.760 --> 02:20:05.860
Okay.

02:20:06.000 --> 02:20:06.600
Before Freebird.

02:20:07.400 --> 02:20:07.820
No, Freebird.

02:20:07.820 --> 02:20:08.220
You got it.

02:20:08.360 --> 02:20:08.440
Yeah.

02:20:10.240 --> 02:20:11.400
Play Freebird, dude.

02:20:12.540 --> 02:20:15.300
Like, I mean, that literally like was the next big epic

02:20:16.000 --> 02:20:17.800
longer than three minutes single that did well.

02:20:18.280 --> 02:20:47.080
Do you know what that means in Radioland? Freebird. Bathroom break. Sorry, I'm confused. So is Freebird a band or a song? Skinner, dude. Woo, Skinner! Do you have any more, Matt? Nope, that's it. You did great. Good job, Jay. All right, Jay. I need you to put on your kiss thinking cap for this first. I'm all over it. Keep it simple, stupid.

02:20:48.280 --> 02:21:18.220
You'll see where I'm going with this in a second. This is a question I asked you similar to Kiss. I might have to name a song that's not about sex. Which one of these songs is about sex? You have four choices. Here we go. Custard Pie, Black Dog, The Lemon Song, or Trampled Underfoot. Is or isn't, did you say? Which one is about sex? And it can be one, two, three, or four.

02:21:18.280 --> 02:21:48.160
It could be any combination. They all are about sex. You got it right. Remember my kiss question. Which song did Kiss not sing about sex? Did you see when they received a Kennedy Center honor or something like that and Jack Black gave the speech? I didn't see it. It's pretty funny. He came out and gave this great speech where he truly obviously loves that one. But one of the things is all their songs are about sex or Viking.

02:21:48.700 --> 02:21:50.140
or Vikings having sex.

02:21:52.580 --> 02:21:53.480
And that is very true.

02:21:54.820 --> 02:21:55.060
Okay.

02:21:55.520 --> 02:21:59.460
I don't know if it's a softball, but let's see how much you know about them.

02:21:59.940 --> 02:22:01.360
What is the name of Led Zeppelin?

02:22:01.440 --> 02:22:04.060
Or what was the name of Led Zeppelin's private jet?

02:22:05.940 --> 02:22:06.600
Yeah, I do know that.

02:22:07.000 --> 02:22:10.320
The jet that they just flaunted in all their pictures.

02:22:11.100 --> 02:22:12.400
Yeah, it's the...

02:22:12.960 --> 02:22:14.920
This is long before Iron Maiden had a jet.

02:22:15.460 --> 02:22:15.700
No, no, no.

02:22:15.840 --> 02:22:17.740
And it's like the Pleasure Cruiser or something like that.

02:22:17.880 --> 02:22:45.120
It's kind of ribald sounding, am I wrong? Like it's a little bit... A flying penis? There was flying and there was a lot of penis on that planet. I know I can get it, but I confess I need a hint. It's one of those things where it's like there on the tip of my tongue. Alright, the only hint I'm going to give you is that penis is on the tip of your tongue. Just a penis. It's similar to a band name from the Bay Area.

02:22:53.380 --> 02:23:17.860
Did they build this city? Keep going, Jay. Keep going with that. Oh, did they call it the Starship? There you go. We built this city. We built this city on rock and roll. On rock and roll. That was the, actually, it's funny because that was the first album I ever listened to. I asked my dad, I was like, I want to get into rock. What should I listen to? And he said,

02:23:17.900 --> 02:23:33.720
me que me dizem que eu ouvi.

02:23:47.880 --> 02:24:17.340
show that he somewhat regrets saying or doing or being involved with. Do you know what that is? Is that something he said? Yes. Does anybody remember laughter? Yes, he is embarrassed that he said that. It was an ad-lib moment during the show. Which probably went over big in 1970s New York, by the way. Yeah. All right.

02:24:17.900 --> 02:24:47.240
A couple more. What is John Paul Jones' real name? Oh, fuck. Somehow I knew somebody was going to ask this one. Well, yeah, because John Paul Jones has been like our meme thread for some reason. Yeah, and it was. My answer on the thread was Jonathan Paula Jones. John Paul George Ringo Jones. Honestly, that's one I've known, but I can't remember. I'm sure it's Jonathan something or John something, but I don't know what it is. Yeah, John Richard Baldwin is his real name. All right, last one.

02:24:47.880 --> 02:25:15.540
Maybe this is hard. Maybe it's not. Before John Bonham, can you name this drummer? There was a famous drummer that Jimmy Page actually asked to join the band before John Bonham, who actually was a member of some pretty big name bands and a pretty big drummer in general. It wasn't Keith Moon, was it? No. However, Jimmy Page has played with Keith Moon, but it's not Keith Moon. Okay. Is it somebody I know?

02:25:17.900 --> 02:25:47.340
I know the name, yes. But not necessarily associated with bands that I love and like and stuff that you know of. You might. Maybe. I don't know. I don't know what your classic rock... But it was before John Bonham. He was asked before John Bonham. Asked before John Bonham. I mean, if you know the history, Jimmy Page asked a lot of people to play at that point before he settled on the people he brought in. I'm sure it's not, but I'll make my last guess Ian Pace. I'm sure you know I love him when I would have known him. No.

02:25:48.539 --> 02:25:53.680
I'll give you a real quick hint on the bands he was a member of both Journey and Jefferson Starship

02:25:55.100 --> 02:25:57.020
oh uh Keltner no

02:25:59.120 --> 02:25:59.700
uh who

02:26:00.840 --> 02:26:01.440
Ansley Dunbar

02:26:02.020 --> 02:26:03.200
Ansley Dunbar yes

02:26:04.260 --> 02:26:04.980
yeah I do know the name

02:26:05.740 --> 02:26:07.380
he's played with everybody but

02:26:07.760 --> 02:26:09.140
he actually was asked first

02:26:09.740 --> 02:26:11.540
to join and he wouldn't join

02:26:11.560 --> 02:26:12.960
I believe because he said

02:26:13.820 --> 02:26:15.180
aren't the yard birds kind of just

02:26:15.880 --> 02:26:17.080
done aren't they old

02:26:17.100 --> 02:26:46.440
And I think that was his reason for not joining. Good choice. Good choice on his part. Just the biggest fucking band in the world. All right. Will. Oh, Will, excuse me. I think mine are all softballs. Perfect. I need to feel a little better about myself. How do you spell Zeppelin? Is that a real one? That's a real one because I got it completely wrong. I spelled it. You spelled it wrong?

02:26:47.100 --> 02:27:13.360
When I was looking it up and stuff, I spelled it wrong. When I was doing Google, Google told me I spelled it wrong. And it was because you either put one or two Ps in it. And it's funny because every time I type, I have to, let's see, it's Z-E-P, I'm trying to remember if there's a second P. Yeah, P, Z-E-P-P-E-L-I-N. That's correct. Yeah, I forgot the second P. I didn't do the P-P.

02:27:15.020 --> 02:27:42.260
I'm not joking that if I find myself doing a Google search or something, I would always pause there and be like, is it one or two? I forget. Bill just said he didn't do the pee-pee. Oh, boy. All right. Softball number two. Name the first four Led Zeppelin albums. One, two, three. Self-titled. Yes.

02:27:44.961 --> 02:28:13.540
Which Led Zeppelin album was released on my 10th birthday? I'm not going to cheat and ask you what Yulia were born, but I'm going to go. It was Coda. Correct. November 19th, 1982. I turned 10 and Coda was released. It's funny because I was a young man at that time, but I actually bought it at a record store. Probably. It was.

02:28:14.000 --> 02:28:43.920
Real close to the time it was released. Anyway, please. Some of us were in high school. I would have been 11. What year was that? 1982. Or 82. 82. I was four. Seven. Which, by the way, wouldn't matter what you think, one way left to write about Coda, but fuck, there's some really good stuff on there. Yes, there is. We're going to groove, especially. Yeah. I don't know if this is actually true or not.

02:28:44.000 --> 02:29:13.500
So this is more of a discussion. How did Led Zeppelin get their name? And I heard a story. I don't know if it's true. Well, I do know how they got it. And to be honest with you, I'm not sure who the quote is attributed to. I think I've heard it a couple different ways, but my recollection is just that they said this is going to go over like a lead balloon. Right. But I also heard jokingly once upon a time that it was somebody outside the band like Keith Moon that said that to them. Keep going.

02:29:13.520 --> 02:29:43.460
It was one or the other. What's that? Yeah, I heard it was like a record label or something. Somebody said that. I think it was a friend. It was somebody to whom they were endeared up to and including themselves. But I feel like John, I feel like he knows the source. That or you mentioned Keith Moon or John Entwistle. Yeah. But it was like set over drinks or something like that. He mentioned they were going to start a band and they literally laughed at him for his concept. Yeah. So I got one more.

02:29:45.300 --> 02:29:48.780
So what band erroneously

02:29:51.980 --> 02:29:58.320
named their fourth album after Led Zeppelin?

02:29:58.790 --> 02:29:59.920
Did their fourth album?

02:30:00.790 --> 02:30:04.660
They named it after Led Zeppelin themselves or after another Zeppelin?

02:30:06.160 --> 02:30:07.940
This is probably a terrible question.

02:30:09.061 --> 02:30:12.080
I was reading something and they're like,

02:30:12.140 --> 02:30:40.360
Oh, well, they did this, so we're going to name our album very similarly. Our fourth album. Metallica. Was it Metallica? Just did a self-title? No. Was it a punk band? That would be their fifth album, by the way. Oh, excuse me. Wait, no, it's not. Was it a punk band? No. You're right, it is their fifth album, sorry. But by the way, they did make that choice on purpose.

02:30:42.120 --> 02:31:12.100
statement like Led Zeppelin 4 was. So they left the title off. But fair enough. It was their fourth album. It's not a punk band. I don't know. Black Sabbath, Volume 4. Oh, interesting. In the book, in the Mick Wall book, they said that they were always trying to keep up with Led Zeppelin because they were always just slightly more popular and a little bit bigger. And so they were doing a lot of influence. And like Bill

02:31:12.120 --> 02:31:40.740
and Bonham were good friends and all this stuff. And there's always this sort of like rivalry, good nature rivalry between the two. And then Black Sabbath decided to call theirs volume four based on what Zeppelin was doing, according to the book. So, which is fine. More of a Sabbath question. But also I'm embarrassed I didn't get it because I read that book less than a year ago. It's a good book too. I enjoyed it. It's a very good book. I just finished it a couple weeks ago. That's it. That's all I got.

02:31:40.840 --> 02:32:10.080
All right. What do you like better, Jay? Sabbath or Zeppelin? Well, the irony is that I would actually include Deep Purple in the conversation, but I guess at the end of the day... So rank the three, then. I don't even know if I can. Good one. Jesus, I don't know if I can. Don't make him cry. That is hard for me because, I mean, my true love is heavy metal, and Zeppelin's not truly a metal band. Although they're instrumental in metal, though. Hugely instrumental. Oh, to be sure.

02:32:11.659 --> 02:32:40.820
I guess that Deep Purple probably third just because of the inconsistency of their output after so many changes if I was going to a desert island fuck that's really hard dude honestly I guess to be honest with you I guess I'd say Black Sabbath yeah I figured yeah as much as I love Zeppelin and I do the run from Zeppelin or at least from the first Black Sabbath record up through Sabotage

02:32:40.860 --> 02:32:42.300
There's just no mistakes in there.

02:32:42.640 --> 02:32:42.820
Mm-hmm.

02:32:45.080 --> 02:32:45.460
Treasure point.

02:32:46.230 --> 02:32:46.320
Uh,

02:32:46.830 --> 02:32:47.460
so I'm going to actually,

02:32:47.660 --> 02:32:47.920
you know what,

02:32:48.000 --> 02:32:48.320
you know what?

02:32:48.400 --> 02:32:49.880
I'm going to put some of you guys through that pain.

02:32:50.240 --> 02:32:50.740
Who else?

02:32:51.300 --> 02:32:52.240
How would you guys do that?

02:32:53.800 --> 02:32:53.880
Oh,

02:32:53.930 --> 02:32:55.580
I would put Sabbath number one just because,

02:32:55.970 --> 02:32:56.240
I mean,

02:32:56.420 --> 02:32:56.820
I mean,

02:32:57.040 --> 02:32:57.880
Sabbath is good.

02:33:01.410 --> 02:33:02.080
So you say that again.

02:33:02.140 --> 02:33:02.340
Sabbath,

02:33:02.560 --> 02:33:02.660
Sabbath,

02:33:02.900 --> 02:33:03.080
purple.

02:33:03.720 --> 02:33:03.860
Yeah,

02:33:04.020 --> 02:33:04.520
I'm the same way.

02:33:05.660 --> 02:33:08.400
But the problem is when I put on fucking made in Japan,

02:33:08.740 --> 02:33:09.040
I'm like,

02:33:09.090 --> 02:33:10.760
this is the greatest fucking thing I've ever heard in my life.

02:33:12.100 --> 02:33:37.120
Deep Purple always. I have a solution. I'll take four of my favorite Sabbath albums and four of my favorite Zeppelin albums, and now I have a collection of one band's albums, even though it's two different bands. All right, I'll take that. Let's do that. I like that. Cheat. When all else fails, cheat. No, I just won't take the albums that aren't that great, and I'll just substitute them with it. Yeah, fair enough, yeah. Yeah, because I could drop some from each catalog.

02:33:40.860 --> 02:34:10.280
Never Say Die. I think that's really easy. All right, so there was a punk band that had an album that was similarly named to one of the Led Zeppelin albums. They basically took the album title and added a few more letters to it to make it something else. Do you know what that band was and what the album was? The album would be Metaphysical Graffiti.

02:34:10.320 --> 02:34:10.620
Yes.

02:34:11.939 --> 02:34:14.740
And the band was called...

02:34:17.060 --> 02:34:19.040
It's not Trip Shakespeare, is it?

02:34:20.270 --> 02:34:20.360
No.

02:34:20.600 --> 02:34:22.340
Oh, but the reason I guessed Trip Shakespeare...

02:34:22.450 --> 02:34:25.020
They had a really funny record title called Are You Shakespeare-ian?

02:34:31.279 --> 02:34:32.860
I know it, George, but I don't know.

02:34:32.880 --> 02:34:33.380
Dead Milkman.

02:34:33.380 --> 02:34:33.940
I can't remember who it was.

02:34:34.500 --> 02:34:35.100
Dead Milkman.

02:34:35.440 --> 02:34:36.440
I think they even owned that.

02:34:36.680 --> 02:34:36.780
Yeah.

02:34:37.160 --> 02:34:38.380
Big lizard in your back, yo.

02:34:38.460 --> 02:34:39.380
Yeah, I like Dead Milkman.

02:34:40.460 --> 02:34:41.080
All right.

02:34:43.160 --> 02:34:45.620
As I am prone to do, I'm going to steal from Matt.

02:34:46.400 --> 02:34:47.800
What is my favorite Zep?

02:34:48.199 --> 02:34:50.180
Similarly, what is my favorite Zep album?

02:34:51.300 --> 02:34:52.520
Your favorite Zep album.

02:34:55.260 --> 02:34:57.540
It's probably something weird, because you're already weird.

02:34:57.700 --> 02:34:58.280
No, I'm not weird.

02:34:58.280 --> 02:34:59.000
Every time you tell me something.

02:34:59.180 --> 02:34:59.560
I'm not weird.

02:35:00.239 --> 02:35:01.020
It's right now.

02:35:01.030 --> 02:35:01.140
Four.

02:35:01.630 --> 02:35:02.740
No, it's not that weird.

02:35:02.860 --> 02:35:03.280
You probably are.

02:35:04.400 --> 02:35:05.180
Okay, it's not four.

02:35:06.340 --> 02:35:06.780
It's not four.

02:35:09.720 --> 02:35:36.560
Don't think too hard. It's one of your favorites. No. Physical Graffiti. Oh, okay. Yes. Yeah, Physical Graffiti. All right. Okay. That's a good choice. You get more bang for your buck out of that one. So on that album, there are two songs back-to-back that have some of the most insidious earworm riffs ever. What are those two songs? Can you define earworm riffs? Riffs that completely get stuck in your head. Oh, that gets stuck in your head. Kind of like the song from Frozen, Let It Go.

02:35:36.800 --> 02:36:04.240
You just get stuck in your head. Except it's the riff, not the vocals. Is it cashmere? That's one of them. And the other one's back-to-back on this? Right next to that on their album? Is it trampled underfoot? Ah, there you go. I was listening to it today and I was like, God damn, that's fucking evil. Back-to-back, those things. Anyway. There's a lot of good shit. Does anybody want to build a snowman?

02:36:07.899 --> 02:36:35.880
So this sort of came up, but you didn't, you didn't answer. You didn't give the full name. So I'm going to ask it, ask it anyway. What was the name of Zeppelin's famous manager? Peter Grant. Okay, there you go. All right. Uh, see, I'm sorry. I'm doing these out of order. So I have to read them. Uh, when played in reverse, what does stairway to heaven supposedly say? My sweet Satan.

02:36:36.820 --> 02:37:03.760
My Sweet Satan, yes. Is that actually true? If you play it backwards, that's what it says? I've got a long story to tell that I'm not going to tell in total, but I'll just tell you I went to a church one time where they tried to do that. It doesn't specifically say it. It's not like it was recorded one way and played the backwards. It just sounds like it could sound like that. Yeah. Yeah.

02:37:06.800 --> 02:37:35.980
So how many Grammys have Led Zeppelin won? It's a two-parter, by the way. Stop Googling! No, I'm staring where I'm hoping to find answers. I'm just inclined to say the answer is zero, but they may have gotten some lifetime achievement bullshit or something. Obviously, I'm wrong. Yes, they have them. That is the second part of the question. How many Grammys have they won is five. How many of those were before they broke up?

02:37:39.640 --> 02:38:06.760
How fucked up is that? I'm not surprised. So how did they win? What were the Grammys for? They were all like achievement awards. Like within the last five years. They went from like how the West was won or something. Which is unreal. How good that is. Did Robert Plant win a Grammy for Solo? I think he did. He might have. I didn't look that up. He might have probably run that now and Zen period or something. I think he did a collaboration with some singer and then

02:38:06.780 --> 02:38:36.240
He did. It was that country thing he did, wasn't it? Oh, that's right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wait, so is Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, or John Paul Jones, or any of them actually doing any new music now? Like now, like 2018, or? Well, he just put out an album. Yeah, he hasn't stopped. Who? And John Paul Jones has been strangely active with people like Josh Holm and people like that. Well, he also does a lot of, I think, soundtrack stuff, too, and producing and everything. And Jimmy Page,

02:38:36.780 --> 02:39:06.720
Every Once in a While Surfaces and says, "I'm working on new music," but it never materializes. And I'll tell you this right now, I know everybody knows this, but there's no reunion. It ain't gonna happen. There's never gonna be a second. Robert's not going that direction. He kills it every time. Yeah, and I don't blame him. He can't sing like that anymore. He's not gonna do that. Is it because of that, or is there some, like, animosity sort of thing? No, I think he just said he doesn't want to go backwards. I think they'll get along still, don't they? Yeah, they can. In fact, they just collaborated on this Led Zeppelin on Led Zeppelin.

02:39:06.960 --> 02:39:11.140
book that's just like a big photo essay which actually i mean to to purchase

02:39:11.600 --> 02:39:16.380
eventually i really like that page plant album walking into clarksdale yeah it's cool

02:39:17.080 --> 02:39:21.240
it was they finally did what they always wanted to do which was to kind of use that music from

02:39:21.400 --> 02:39:25.300
merrick catch and all that stuff i was so impressed that when they got back together they said let's do

02:39:25.440 --> 02:39:32.320
that because they used to talk about doing that all right i have one last one and i it's a book it's a page

02:39:32.340 --> 02:39:38.180
from Will's book. It's a lyrics one. Okay. There can be no denying that the wind will shake

02:39:38.240 --> 02:40:02.300
them down and the world's the flat world's flying and there's a new plague on the land. I said that as plainly as I could so I wouldn't give it away. Yeah but I do know it. Say it again. There can be no denying that the wind will shake them down and the flat world's

02:40:02.340 --> 02:40:32.280
And there's a new plague on the land. Uh, the rover? Yes. Got it. Nice. That's a great fucking song. You know what song I love on that record? Night Flight. I just heard that today. I received a message from my brother across the border. You know, George, when you said you were going to do a lyric to the light, you were going to say, what is this song? Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh

02:40:35.800 --> 02:40:39.720
I'm wondering if Will can sing Let It Go right now before we get into the next section.

02:40:40.740 --> 02:40:47.080
Oh, am I unmuted? Let it go, let it go. Can't hold it back anymore.

02:40:47.720 --> 02:40:49.120
Not bad, not bad. That's pretty good.

02:40:49.500 --> 02:40:50.120
Can I get sued?

02:40:50.760 --> 02:40:51.280
Thanks, Will.

02:40:51.520 --> 02:40:52.280
Yeah, all right.

02:40:52.800 --> 02:40:53.320
That'll get right.

02:40:54.080 --> 02:40:55.420
All right, good job, Jay.

02:40:55.940 --> 02:40:56.380
Let it go.

02:40:57.239 --> 02:40:58.640
Well done, Jay, well done.

02:40:59.020 --> 02:41:00.180
I want to hope for more out of myself.

02:41:01.080 --> 02:41:27.280
Well, I do love Let's Have. If any band we did, Jay, they by far had the most information to pull from. To be sure. I guess. You did great. All right. So next up, we are going back to Will, who is going to do my greatest song ever. Hit it. So I thought this was going to be a little harder, but then when I actually started thinking about it, it came pretty quickly. You did? I guess that's why. Yeah, I came quick. Too pumped, chump right here, man.

02:41:31.080 --> 02:41:59.500
As expected. We expected no less. So the way I kind of process this in my mind very quickly was that there's themes and then there's bands. And if there's themes and those bands sync up, that's where I'm going to go. So I think after spending most of my adult life in the Marine Corps and running around third world shithole war zones on a constant basis, war is always a.

02:42:01.060 --> 02:42:29.480
a subject matter that I tend to like in my heavy metal. And then being a Slayer fan, they have a plethora of songs that go where you have the subject matter in there, whether it's mandatory suicide or Ghosts of War. And then I thought about it for a couple minutes and then I thought, you know what?

02:42:29.500 --> 02:42:57.900
the song I think is my greatest song ever that when I hear it live at a Slayer show I kind of lose my shit which is like most Slayer songs that they play war ensemble and to the point that I remember when this came out in 1990 which is it came out right around the time where I signed up for the Marine Corps when I was 17 I get my parents permission this album came out it was right when

02:42:57.900 --> 02:43:27.780
And, you know, Saddam invaded Kuwait. You know, Iraq invaded Kuwait. And then I joined the Marine Corps. And I'm like, I'm not going to college. Fuck that. I'm going to go kill people. So there used to be this tradition when you were, what do you call boot in the Marine Corps, a young Marine. And you used to get these bomber jackets and you used to decorate them with all your Marine Corps stuff. It was super cheesy. But it just seemed like this thing, like you had to do, it was like a rite of passage you had to do.

02:43:27.900 --> 02:43:57.880
And I like this song War Ensemble so much that on the back of my jacket surrounding the giant Marine Corps emblem was victory is to survive, death is defeat. And so I just, I don't know. It's a great song. It's a great well-written song. The lyrics are, they're not pro-war, they're not anti-war, they're just sort of, it's about war, which I kind of appreciate about Slayer sometimes. They're not, like Lamb of God sometimes is very anti-war.

02:43:57.940 --> 02:44:27.620
Anti-war. I shouldn't say anti-war. They just make... Anti-soldiers. Yes. They make the individual soldiers seem like mindless killing machines and they're like, go fuck yourselves. Even though... Anyway, blah, blah, blah, blah. I just think that the Slayer song is just... It fits me. My favorite song is War Ensemble by Slayer. You know, I agree with your sentiment too about that because you never would have said other bunch of fucking Nazis because of Angel of Death and stuff like that.

02:44:27.900 --> 02:44:57.720
is always sort of like social commentary, but without an investment. You know what I mean? Like they just, they talk about things in a historical context and stuff and they, and they get away with it because they don't, because I don't know, they're not taking sides. Right. Yeah. And that's why I like, I mean, and then, so if I had, I looked at a couple of my honorable mentions, so to speak, the ones that I wrote down that I was thinking about disposable heroes from Metallica. Again, it's, it's a little bit more of a commentary, so to speak, but,

02:44:57.920 --> 02:45:27.040
I can't say that it's incorrect in some ways. It's just a phenomenal song. And then Mandatory Suicide, which the title would sort of kind of emote that it's some sort of like you're brainless. But if you read the lyrics, it's not. One thing I like about Mandatory Suicide was that because I was a sniper in the Marine Corps, I always liked the line in the lyrics, the sniper places you through your knees falling down.

02:45:27.120 --> 02:45:57.080
Can You Feel the Heat? And then I threw in, not that it has any emotional connection, but I just think it's one of the greatest fucking songs ever written, Season the Abyss by Slayer. I know it's about a big acid trip, which has no emotional connection to me, but goddamn, I love that song. And nice to just sit here and praise Slayer for a minute, dude. Having all of us seen now, all of us took our turn, right? Everybody saw him, was going to see him on this tour. I don't know if you got to see him, Marcus. I did.

02:45:57.120 --> 02:46:25.640
I was actually out of town. I really wanted to, but I got four of my friends to go see him. I'd already seen him six times. Maybe even more than that, actually. I was sad that I didn't get to see the final shows. It was funny. I think George was the one who said so, and I felt more emotional than I thought I was going to. It's just this party that's been going on, and party's not the right word for it. Also, they just were brutal. They just come out.

02:46:27.779 --> 02:46:33.400
I was sad because I knew they were going to bring it because it's the final tour but

02:46:33.900 --> 02:46:38.020
you know the important thing to me is that I saw him when Jeff had him that was alive you know so yeah

02:46:38.640 --> 02:46:56.300
many times so yeah you ever see him with Jeff and Dave together yeah yeah uh Will is going to ask you did that song that Slayer song come out before you went into the service because that was on the seasons in the abyss album right yeah right so that came out in 1990 I believe um

02:46:56.300 --> 02:47:25.500
Okay. Or was it 89, 90? 90. South of Heaven came out in 88. So I signed up with the recruiter in the Marine Corps in 1990. And I saw them in the – it was either September or October of 1990. They had that Week in the Abyss tour. I've told this story many times. I won't belabor it. But they did a few small club dates at Slayer's Height in 1990. They did a few club dates. The Waltons was at Trocadero in Philadelphia.

02:47:25.540 --> 02:47:53.640
And so you got to see Slayer play at a pretty relatively small venue. And it was absolutely the most insane concert I've ever seen in my life. And just to get that close up and personal with Slayer at the height of their popularity, it was absolutely insane. I like to think of the Army Recruiter's Office, excuse me, Marine Recruiter's Office of those periods saying, here's your pamphlet, here's your hat, here's a Slayer record for you.

02:47:56.979 --> 02:48:25.460
I remember seeing them in central New York a long time ago. There was a big fight. There was crazy mosh pit, and there was a big fight, and I think I beat up three guys because they were picking on one of my friends. It's always my biggest Slayer memory. Awesome. For any future trivia, Warren Ensemble was the first Slayer song I ever heard, and so will I always hold that spot in my heart? Nice. That's an awesome question.

02:48:25.520 --> 02:48:33.600
Coincidence. Another good place to start, too. Yeah, nice. Absolutely. All right, why don't we move on to our top five?

02:48:57.520 --> 02:49:00.580
So Markisan gave me some ideas and I

02:49:01.500 --> 02:49:03.720
put those to the guys and we picked one

02:49:04.480 --> 02:49:07.720
and we went with top five most depressing doom metal songs

02:49:09.420 --> 02:49:11.200
Get ready to feel bad about yourself

02:49:11.480 --> 02:49:11.980
Yeah, exactly

02:49:13.140 --> 02:49:15.220
So if you cried making this list, it's okay

02:49:16.720 --> 02:49:20.500
Man, this is hard. I didn't know what I was getting into when I thought of this one

02:49:20.560 --> 02:49:21.720
Holy shit, was this hard

02:49:22.220 --> 02:49:23.560
Yeah, we were talking earlier and I

02:49:23.560 --> 02:49:45.680
I was thinking of it in terms of the death metal list we did where top five most fucked up death metal songs that it would just be this craziness. But I went with stuff that I was actually familiar with and actually had depressive meaning to me. So my list is not going to be insane like that.

02:49:47.299 --> 02:50:15.660
Mine's somewhat traditional. And I included some songs that aren't necessarily from bands you're going to consider necessarily a doom band. But we'll see what I say. Yeah, I have one that's not considered a doom band, though they're a very depressive band. And then another one that, I guess I think they are, but they have, like, that's like a split genre, so. Gotcha. There's some bands that just straddle the line. I think I know which band that is, too, George, just so you know, and I think I've got a song by them, too. Text me.

02:50:16.440 --> 02:50:45.100
Text me. I will. All right. We'll start with Markasson, number five. You know how it goes. Okay. My number five is Evokin' Antithesis of Light. 2005 album, just a really bleak as hell song about life and light ending. And it makes me feel like I'm slowly descending in eternal darkness. It's really slow and just horrible.

02:50:46.460 --> 02:51:15.200
His desolate father of all time awaits the final breath and stands a lonely vigil to greet you in the inevitable darkness once again. It's so bleak and horrible. Awesome. They've got a new album coming out too. I know. I thought that was pretty cool because I'm really a big admirer of that band. I'm looking forward to the new one. Awesome. All right. Matt number five.

02:51:15.860 --> 02:51:44.400
My number five, I almost passed it by, but when I stopped and thought about it, this title is fucking heavy. From the album Chapter 3, Parasomnia by the band Coliseum, Questioning Existence. That sounds deep. Just the title alone. I know the band, I know not the song, but it does sound deep. That was definitely a band I considered for my list, too. Cool. All right, John.

02:51:45.860 --> 02:52:14.620
So my list, I did look for the most depressive songs. When I listened to them, I'm like, you know what? Everything sucks. That's where I took this. And this one, many people may not know this band, but the band's name is Halitar. If I'm saying it right in the song, it was Dreams Burn Down. And this is the guy from Swallow the Sun, who also had a project called Trees of Eternity with his lifetime partner.

02:52:14.700 --> 02:52:43.440
I looked at Trees of Eternity just because I was like, oh, I know that shit's going to be dark. But I was like, well, that was when she was still alive. I should have gotten the way you did. Yeah. And this is the album that he released after her, but she sings on the very last song on the album, and that's Dreams Burned Down. And if you know anything about him and Swallow the Sun, he is really taking this hard. He doesn't tour with Swallow the Sun right now. So I just felt like, fuck, I'm listening to this, and I just think of his pain. I'm thinking, this is bullshit, man. Fuck.

02:52:44.240 --> 02:53:13.920
You know, because I like the trees of eternity. So I just found this to be very depressing. And it's a really good, it's a good song. Haven't heard of that one. Well, let's all just also own up to the fact that sometimes you like to put on a song that you know is going to depress you. Oh, yeah, you do. Yeah, there's a joy to that. There's some healing in that, I think, too. Yeah, I'll buy that. Yeah, you got to just engage that part of your being every once in a while. So yeah, maybe not a well known song, but the story behind the song makes it just like,

02:53:17.439 --> 02:53:18.300
All right, Will.

02:53:20.920 --> 02:53:24.920
Just going off that thread, there's a song I love.

02:53:25.240 --> 02:53:29.080
It's one of my most played songs on my iTunes playlist or whatever, and they rank them.

02:53:29.960 --> 02:53:35.020
It's not on my list, but Paul Bearer, Worlds Apart, I've done that song.

02:53:35.160 --> 02:53:36.480
I'm just like, whoa.

02:53:37.510 --> 02:53:39.240
I was wondering if you could put that on there.

02:53:40.160 --> 02:54:09.820
You know, also, even though it's not one of the heavier things, Ashes, off the second record, really just pull you right down, dude. Yeah. So, along those lines, my number five, Devoid of Redemption by Paul Bearer off Sorrow and Extinction. Just love the song. I went by title. So I only went by things I have in my collection, and then I just went by song title.

02:54:09.900 --> 02:54:39.860
I don't like mostly look by look at the song title like and then look at think of the song I'm like yeah it's pretty fucking depressive song so yeah the void of redemption Paul bearer number five nice my number five is a band that I have always sort of thought was a mix between like black sabbath and pink floyd and when I tell you who it is you might be like what but when they get into depressive modes man it's fucked up and I'll just without any more delay type O negative a song called

02:54:39.900 --> 02:55:09.140
World Coming Down. Holy shit. Yeah. That whole record. And I don't mind telling you, I have two songs by them on my list. I just, that record breaks my heart every time I hear it. Yeah. I should have had some typo on my list. It just didn't occur to me somehow. But yeah. Well, I mean, they're not. Pete's songs were so just like real and depressing and just like, damn. And he had this sort of just very basic way of, he's like, he's a poet.

02:55:09.240 --> 02:55:11.440
He could just say something and without any flurry

02:55:11.640 --> 02:55:15.760
language, he cut right to the heart of certain matters. In any case, that song is pretty rough.

02:55:16.239 --> 02:55:18.680
That whole album is on my honorable mentions.

02:55:19.240 --> 02:55:23.100
Yeah, it is. That record. I'll tell you right. My number three is awful.

02:55:23.620 --> 02:55:24.660
Everyone I love is dead.

02:55:26.180 --> 02:55:29.700
Yeah, exactly. And also everyone dies, I think, or everything dies.

02:55:29.760 --> 02:55:30.480
Everything dies, yeah.

02:55:31.640 --> 02:55:34.780
But neither of those are my other ones. So what do you got, Georgie?

02:55:35.460 --> 02:56:05.100
My Dying Bride Grace Unhearing from Like Gods of the Sun. You just broke John's heart. Either that or he's taking a really well-needed dump. Definitely sounded like a dump. I feel better. Yeah, you look better. All right. Well, back to Markisan. Back to me.

02:56:05.200 --> 02:56:35.100
My Number Four is Mournful Congregation, A Slow March to the Burial from the June Frost 2012 album. So we're going funeral doom. I mean, you got to for this category almost. You know, you got to have a few in there. So yeah, I mean, everybody has experienced some kind of death in their life. And this is just very mournful. The lyrics are all very sad. A father and son,

02:56:35.180 --> 02:57:05.160
and a son to a father now claimed by the coldest hand of death faintest scent of fresh cut white rose petal choked by the musty scent of fresh turned earth funeral they march funeral they march let's keep you going so yeah uh you know i've had a lot of death in my life so um that song is something that uh i've listened to quite a bit you know can you guys excuse me while i go slit my wrist yeah i really was i was like come on man stop yeah i wanted to i looked through some funeral

02:57:05.180 --> 02:57:35.140
too, because I was like, that's gotta be the way to go. Specifically skepticism. Because I'm a big skepticism fan. And I, while they didn't make my list, just because I felt a closer connection to these other songs, I will give them credit as the most depressing live set I've ever seen. What was their album that they did the entire, they record the entire thing live? Ordeal, I think it was. Yeah, that's it. Oh my God. When they played MDF in

02:57:35.200 --> 02:58:01.300
It would have gone off so much better at night. But they're all dressed up in like party clothes, like tuxedos or whatever. And the singer's got like the ties undone and the top buttons done, done. And he's just like emoting when he's not even singing. He's just like moving in the most like depressing way. I was like, my God, this is, it was awesome and depressing. So, yeah.

02:58:02.220 --> 02:58:27.180
There's a lot of bands that you can put on this list. When I was listening to them, I thought some of them were more depressing than others. So I really went for songs that emotionally made me not feel depressed, but connect to those dark feelings inside. But you can go a number of different ways with this question. All the rest of mine are go-to songs for me when I'm depressed.

02:58:32.240 --> 02:59:01.860
us right now that we went through this exercise and we didn't kill ourselves. So, hey, good on us. Good on us all. Hey, cheers, everyone. Hey, well, we're only on number five. Yeah, we're on four. I just did four. Top five group therapy. Making nooses. Number two, you're putting her neck in and number one, you're like, I'm jumping off, motherfuckers. Like an airplane. All right. There's children present, Will. What are you doing? Oh, no, no.

02:59:01.960 --> 02:59:31.260
My daughter left. All right, Matt. Similar to Will, the title of the song was probably The Driver for Me, and then it got into stuff that was in my collection. So my number four, The Thought of This Depresses Me, from the album The Guessing Game, Cathedrals, Cats, Incense, Candles, and Wine. Nice. That combo just depresses the shit. Sounds like a really depressed old lady.

02:59:31.340 --> 02:59:32.920
It's a Yankee candle.

02:59:34.220 --> 02:59:34.420
Yeah.

02:59:34.840 --> 02:59:36.060
Well, then everybody feels more.

02:59:36.210 --> 02:59:37.660
Then it's a Friday night at Lucha's house.

02:59:42.759 --> 02:59:44.060
Chocolate pecan surprise.

02:59:44.640 --> 02:59:44.760
What?

02:59:45.659 --> 02:59:47.540
I feel so young.

02:59:51.580 --> 02:59:52.260
All right, John.

02:59:52.900 --> 02:59:54.000
There's way too much fun here.

02:59:54.120 --> 02:59:54.960
Let's bring it.

02:59:54.980 --> 02:59:55.620
Yeah, come on.

02:59:55.760 --> 02:59:56.540
Why would we have to go down?

02:59:56.780 --> 02:59:57.960
All right.

02:59:58.010 --> 03:00:00.560
So I'm going to follow George's footsteps.

03:00:01.560 --> 03:00:30.740
There are two bands that could fill my list for like 50 songs. One of those is Catatonia, but I did not go there. But I did go with My Dying Bride, The Dreadful Hours from their album, The Dreadful Hours. If you've heard it, you know what I'm talking about. There may be a fast moment in the song, but the beginning end, you're just like, fuck. Yeah, they're pretty good at that depressive stuff. Yeah, you literally could fill the whole thing up with their catalog. Agreed.

03:00:30.820 --> 03:01:00.420
I had my Dying Bride from Turn Loose the Swans. My runner-up, Crown of Sympathy. There's just a lot of really great... How do you choose one? It's very hard. All right, Will. My number four, both in song title and in the actual song itself, No Hope in Sight, Paradise Lost, From the Plague Within. Nice. Good song.

03:01:00.820 --> 03:01:30.380
It's depressive. You're not supposed to be nice. You're like, oh, sad. Sad. Sad. Sad. I need a weeping sound effect. Yeah, we need a aww. Aw. You need some sobbing sound effects right now. There you go. There you go. There you go. Sample that. My number four. First off, let me just say, you know what? I totally overlooked a record that you guys just reminded of, even though you didn't say it, which was I didn't choose anything off of that last Swallow the Sun record. Yeah.

03:01:55.820 --> 03:01:57.660
The Distance of Forever.

03:01:57.720 --> 03:02:27.260
And they have this guest vocalist that comes in on all of their records, actually. And it's just, I can't describe it. You're just going to have to listen to it. It's just like, oh my God, it just pulls you down so far. And it's about somebody basically floating down the sort of river of souls having died and realizing how insignificant they are and also how they've been sucked into one of the more negative currents, but that probably is well-deserved. It's good. It's a really good song and a great record. Have you guys seen Bell Witch Live?

03:02:27.720 --> 03:02:57.240
I've seen him twice. That's really interesting, just the two members in there. It was a very different... What he does, too, with his hands, too, I didn't understand. I always thought that he'd probably multitrack. He doesn't multitrack. He's fucking doing that all with two hands. I know. Yeah, I saw them. I liked them a lot, and they were great live. So, George, your boy. My number four, Candlemas Solitude. Yeah, that's a good one. Waiting for that one. Yep. Yeah, I thought about it.

03:02:57.260 --> 03:03:00.100
Oldie but a goodie.

03:03:00.280 --> 03:03:00.620
All right.

03:03:00.970 --> 03:03:02.980
Back to Markisan number three.

03:03:03.940 --> 03:03:11.400
Number three is shape of despair reaching the innermost from the monotony fields album 2015.

03:03:12.000 --> 03:03:13.560
It's a really sad,

03:03:13.900 --> 03:03:18.060
slow and atmospheric funeral doom track about innermost despair.

03:03:18.690 --> 03:03:21.600
And it's made more melancholy by this,

03:03:21.830 --> 03:03:24.920
these female vocals that kick in around the seven and a half minute mark.

03:03:25.740 --> 03:03:33.200
The Lyrics are really spare and kind of vague in this song, but they just don't matter because the music is some of the most mournful I've ever heard.

03:03:33.460 --> 03:03:33.580
Yeah.

03:03:33.860 --> 03:03:34.400
All right, Matt.

03:03:35.880 --> 03:03:39.440
All right, my number three from the album The Incubus of Karma.

03:03:40.000 --> 03:03:45.700
Karma, a picture of the devouring gloom devouring the spheres of being by a mournful congregation.

03:03:46.760 --> 03:03:46.900
Nice.

03:03:47.300 --> 03:03:47.880
Nice.

03:03:49.040 --> 03:03:51.840
I mean, you could pick almost any mournful congregation song.

03:03:52.180 --> 03:03:52.380
Yes.

03:03:52.380 --> 03:03:55.440
It's another band that's just really depressing all the way through.

03:03:55.500 --> 03:04:22.420
You could just say mournful congregation. Yeah, pretty much. I'm done. One through five mournful congregations. All right, John? My number three is actually from an album this year, which actually made my list this year. And that's the only reason I probably put it on, just because it's kind of fresh in mind. It's the only song I have on here, where all three titles, the album, the band, and the song, are just like, man, this blows.

03:04:25.540 --> 03:04:54.640
The Lapse of Light. The album's called Each Failing Step. And the song's called... I can feel you getting depressed as you talk. A Place to Die. John, keep your head up. Keep your head up, buddy. Fuck up, little camper. Love you, man. Yeah. I don't know if you guys have had a chance to listen to this album. I've heard it. They call themselves a doom band, but this is a very funeral doom-esque song. So that's it.

03:04:56.199 --> 03:05:25.060
My number three. Pretty obvious one everyone will think of. Probably not on your list, but Black Sabbath. Hand of Doom. That's a good one, man. It's all about taking heroin. It's like they have a song about pot. They have a song about cocaine. This is their song about heroin. And Slayer did a really good cover of this. Yep. That's right. God, yeah. What was that on? Was that like a B-side to something? Or what was... I forget. Yeah, me too. But I do remember hearing it.

03:05:26.521 --> 03:05:54.240
A Fine's Face. Mine number four is, or wherever the hell we are here, is the other typo negative song that I chose. And based on what I suspect was the nature of Peter's death and his, I think, the way his body had fallen apart, the first actual song minus the intro on that same record is called White Slavery. It's about cocaine addiction. And it's so fucking depressing.

03:05:55.280 --> 03:06:22.880
And the chorus is, I lost myself again. It's a nightmare, but it's clear. It will end, but when? But then also just in classic Peter style, there's some humor in the song at the sort of late chorus. And it says this, let me say, Pepsi generation, a few lines of misinformation. Watch your money flow away so quick to kill yourself properly. Coke is it. But it's such a good song.

03:06:25.280 --> 03:06:54.680
know about him and how he, like I say, probably died. I think his body just kind of deteriorated from all his coke use. Yeah. It's a great song. My number three, the song title stays the same. The song remains the same, but the band changes. Black Sabbath, Solitude. Oh, nice. I'm surprised to hear so much Black Sabbath on this list, actually. That song is really fucking depressing. It's beautiful, but it's depressing. And so is, you know, like changes.

03:06:55.300 --> 03:07:25.240
If you wanted to, I mean, I would call that a doom song for where it comes from. And I consider that. It's a Caitlyn Jenner theme song. I'm going to challenge you. Okay. Wow, Will's singing a lot. Yeah. Give me another beer. I'll sing some more. Hey, we should do a karaoke episode. Yeah. Every answer we say, everything we say has to be sung. What is your number two? My number two.

03:07:25.300 --> 03:07:54.760
Who Is Lost? Cut Up, Depressed, and Alone from Despond 2011. This is just one of the bleakest, coldest songs I've ever listened to. The title Alone is depressing, and then you listen to the music and the lyrics, and you instantly just want to curl up into a ball. It's a good album. It's definitely about somebody on the precipice of committing suicide, so it's pretty brutal. Okay, Matt?

03:07:54.780 --> 03:07:55.780
Number two,

03:07:57.080 --> 03:07:57.700
from slow,

03:07:58.040 --> 03:07:58.800
deep and hard.

03:07:59.160 --> 03:07:59.340
Yes.

03:08:00.119 --> 03:08:03.320
Unsuccessfully coping with the natural beauty of infidelity.

03:08:03.550 --> 03:08:04.240
I love that.

03:08:04.420 --> 03:08:04.500
negative.

03:08:05.330 --> 03:08:06.020
Such a good song.

03:08:07.040 --> 03:08:07.160
You know,

03:08:07.160 --> 03:08:07.520
I know.

03:08:07.520 --> 03:08:07.800
I know.

03:08:07.800 --> 03:08:08.440
It's still a Panther song.

03:08:09.220 --> 03:08:09.660
Yeah.

03:08:09.910 --> 03:08:10.020
Yeah.

03:08:10.020 --> 03:08:10.160
Yeah.

03:08:10.760 --> 03:08:11.100
I know.

03:08:11.130 --> 03:08:12.920
And George and I are type of guys.

03:08:12.930 --> 03:08:13.940
And I thought you were too,

03:08:14.080 --> 03:08:14.180
man.

03:08:14.180 --> 03:08:14.520
I didn't.

03:08:14.840 --> 03:08:14.960
Yes.

03:08:14.960 --> 03:08:15.360
I couldn't remember.

03:08:15.820 --> 03:08:15.880
Yes.

03:08:16.180 --> 03:08:16.740
Or gravity.

03:08:16.960 --> 03:08:17.960
Gravity is another good one.

03:08:18.780 --> 03:08:19.740
Gravity is crushing me.

03:08:20.520 --> 03:08:21.060
All right.

03:08:21.360 --> 03:08:21.660
Uh,

03:08:21.660 --> 03:08:21.680
John.

03:08:21.940 --> 03:08:22.140
All right.

03:08:23.580 --> 03:08:29.080
I think I'm the only person who remembers this band probably

03:08:29.801 --> 03:08:37.560
but this is from the mid 90s bands called the third and immortal oh yeah this song is called why so lonely

03:08:39.440 --> 03:08:46.920
it's just from start to finish everything about the song is just brutal so and and they were one of the

03:08:47.000 --> 03:09:16.660
The First Early True Doom bands with the female singer, where her vocals transcended the song to make it even feel worse than it should have been just because she's such a great singer. So. Yeah, I remember them. Yeah. Does anyone have honorable mentions, by the way? No. I do. Yeah, I do. I don't. I had a few, but I don't have to mention them. Doesn't matter. There were things I considered, but I'm not going to. Yeah, I don't care. Are you worried? Are you worried about? I'm too sad to mention them. Are you worried about getting there, Will?

03:09:18.021 --> 03:09:46.980
I don't know if I can make it. My number two, Self Mutilation by Fire and Stone by Gravelines. Their album Fed into Nihilist's Engine just sounded really fucked up. You're mutilating yourself with Fire and Stone. Yeah. That's all I got. Six on Bat 3 would do. Exactly. So my next one is from

03:09:47.000 --> 03:09:48.860
an album that's close to my heart and

03:09:49.340 --> 03:09:51.080
a lot of people don't necessarily consider these guys

03:09:51.080 --> 03:09:53.080
to be a doom band per se but I think they got a

03:09:53.220 --> 03:09:54.760
death doom quality to them especially on

03:09:55.120 --> 03:09:56.880
this album Monotheist

03:09:57.760 --> 03:09:59.480
Celtic Frost is very has some doom elements

03:10:00.020 --> 03:10:01.500
there is a there's a song that's only

03:10:01.620 --> 03:10:03.040
on the vinyl version but I have it

03:10:03.300 --> 03:10:04.780
digitally somehow I got that I don't know

03:10:05.400 --> 03:10:06.780
and I'm gonna it's called intent

03:10:07.300 --> 03:10:08.720
incantation against you and

03:10:09.260 --> 03:10:10.760
this I'll read to you Martin Eric

03:10:11.120 --> 03:10:12.940
Martin Eric Ains explanation

03:10:16.100 --> 03:10:16.980
inspired by

03:10:16.980 --> 03:10:20.720
writings of banishment and the something something text and the necronomicon

03:10:21.340 --> 03:10:25.960
this always reads to me like an ancient restraining order this incantation is about

03:10:26.220 --> 03:10:31.020
love gone wrong and the hell that follows and i and and this is actually a female voice

03:10:31.480 --> 03:10:35.860
singing the words and and it's just this really eerie music she sings it on top of and the

03:10:36.520 --> 03:10:41.380
i'll just read you a small bit of the words you shall not approach you shall not walk before me

03:10:41.380 --> 03:10:46.960
you shall not follow me where i remain you shall not remain where i take sleep you shall not sleep

03:10:46.960 --> 03:11:13.580
And it just goes on and on and on like that. And ends with the lyric, be gone, terror of my night. And it's haunting, that song. I feel like I'm in church. Sorry about that. I just love that song, that whole record. It's a vinyl bonus, but you can't find it online. I feel like that's what my wife says to me when I walk into the bedroom. She calls you vinyl? Yeah, that's weird. I've got to be honest.

03:11:16.980 --> 03:11:46.820
All right, my number two, not technically a doom band. However, they are labeled suicide metal. And you could pretty much choose any song from any album, and it is going to be just heartbreakingly depressing. This is Sentenced. And the song is No One There. I knew there would be some Sentenced, and I wonder if there won't even be another one. Yeah, no. Yeah, I'm like, what could be more depressing than Sentenced?

03:11:46.980 --> 03:12:16.420
Well, there he is. All right. Mark us on number one. Oh, yeah. Drum roll. Number one. Oh, nice. Okay. So I feel like anything by Patrick Waller has to be on this top five lists because his whole catalog is really depressingly sad. So I went back and forth between warnings watching from a distance and 40 watt suns, the inside room.

03:12:16.520 --> 03:12:46.480
And I ended up going with 40 Watt Sun, Open Your Eyes, from the Inside Room 2011. It's about a person who has all this pain in her life and doesn't love herself at all. And the narrator just seems to be trying so hard to get her to try and be happy. But the way that the lyrics are written, it almost feels like he doesn't actually believe he can help her turn her life around. It's just heartbreaking to me because it's very,

03:12:46.520 --> 03:13:16.500
I have a lot of friends who this has happened to. So, and just, I mean, the way that guy sings is just, just makes me want to cry instantly. So that is my number one. Awesome. Open your eyes. All right, Matt. My number one was actually on my year endless last year from the album. As we cup our hands and drink from the stream of our ache is the song to wallow in the filth that dwells where despair

03:13:16.540 --> 03:13:25.320
is born by cavern light oh yeah wow yeah exactly sad shit right there

03:13:28.761 --> 03:13:31.960
deep a great album though too i really like that absolutely

03:13:33.740 --> 03:13:39.100
oh i'm gonna call your wife and make sure that she put you on suicide watch thank you i appreciate that

03:13:41.479 --> 03:13:41.880
John.

03:13:42.280 --> 03:13:42.480
All right.

03:13:43.020 --> 03:13:54.800
My number one, I had two songs from the same band that I wanted to put here, and I had to choose one, and I chose the one to me that was by far the most painful to listen to.

03:13:55.980 --> 03:13:59.560
This is not from a metal album, although they are a former Doom band.

03:14:00.920 --> 03:14:01.620
Okay, I know who it is.

03:14:03.660 --> 03:14:07.340
And the band is Anathema, and it's from the album Judgment.

03:14:07.400 --> 03:14:37.380
It's called One Last Goodbye. And it is about Danny and Vinny Cavanaugh who are in the band. It's about their mother passing away. And it was their one last goodbye to her. And if you've never heard it, it actually is. It's painful to watch them play it live. Because you could actually see them still experiencing that 10, 12 years later, 15 years later. And it was tough. Because I wanted to choose another song from them. We do honorable mentions, and I'll mention it there. But it doesn't matter. They were a form of a song.

03:14:38.079 --> 03:14:39.740
It's just brutal to listen to.

03:14:40.380 --> 03:14:40.660
All right.

03:14:41.220 --> 03:14:41.280
Will.

03:14:41.700 --> 03:14:42.380
My number one.

03:14:44.020 --> 03:14:47.620
A little surprising to me, but everyone has AIDS.

03:14:47.860 --> 03:14:49.300
Team America World Police soundtrack.

03:14:50.120 --> 03:14:51.140
Pretty fucking depressing.

03:14:53.159 --> 03:14:55.120
AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDS.

03:14:55.540 --> 03:14:56.540
Everyone has AIDS.

03:14:56.740 --> 03:14:57.960
AIDS, AIDS, AIDS, AIDS.

03:14:59.560 --> 03:15:02.000
Sorry, that was my joking number one.

03:15:02.100 --> 03:15:04.420
That is pretty fucking depressing if everyone had AIDS.

03:15:05.040 --> 03:15:05.500
Yeah, for sure.

03:15:07.140 --> 03:15:36.700
One of my new favorite bands in the entire world, they have a song called Rot in Solitude by Temple of Void off their first full length of terror and the supernatural. Nice. Just think about it. Rot in Solitude. God damn. That's some cold shit right there. At least you don't have AIDS. AIDS, AIDS, AIDS. Hey, you know the good thing about AIDS? You only get it once. Fair enough. You know what? Every cloud has a silver lining. Well done.

03:15:37.140 --> 03:16:06.820
That Temple of Void album is awesome. It is, yeah. Okay, mine is an oft-overlooked but sometimes polarizing album that comes off of, namely this one, Black Sabbath, Born Again. The title track on this album, the song Born Again, broke my heart when I was a kid. And so when I listen to it now, it still breaks my heart, but it also reminds me of my youth, which is horrible. I mean, I had a good youth.

03:16:06.920 --> 03:16:10.840
I just mean, you know, it's gone. Thank you, George.

03:16:13.130 --> 03:16:24.300
But I just I do want to share some lyrics because this is the way the lyrics go. As you look through my window deep into my room at the tapestries all faded, their vague and distant glories concealed in the gloom.

03:16:24.740 --> 03:16:30.300
The icy fingers of forgotten passions softly brushing my lips at the tips of my primitive soul.

03:16:30.860 --> 03:16:31.740
Anyway, this whole thing.

03:16:31.740 --> 03:16:34.780
And I can always picture that scene looking into this stale room.

03:16:35.100 --> 03:17:04.760
And the whole point of the Born Again is that he's saying, look at me, and you'll feel better about yourself. It is such a good song. And I probably heard that song 500 times, and I never get tired of it. Black Sabbath, Born Again. And just an amazing delivery of vocals by one Ian Gillen. Awesome. Love that song. It's a good song. Clearly, Black Sabbath is your number one over Led Zeppelin. You don't even think about that at all.

03:17:06.359 --> 03:17:34.960
I don't know if there are any really truly depressing Zephlin songs. I'd have to think about it. Yeah, I don't think so. But in any case. Maybe the song where they didn't get laid. The one that got away. Gallows Pole, maybe that's about it. That's a little depressing. In My Time of Dying. Doing pretty good. Dazed and Confused. Ten years gone. And Dazed and Confused is also prototype Doom, if you ask me.

03:17:36.221 --> 03:17:36.740
George.

03:17:38.400 --> 03:17:38.560
Alrighty.

03:17:38.960 --> 03:17:39.620
My number one,

03:17:39.750 --> 03:17:39.900
uh,

03:17:40.600 --> 03:17:42.140
more known as a black metal band,

03:17:42.300 --> 03:17:43.220
but it's a black doom.

03:17:44.320 --> 03:17:44.540
Uh,

03:17:45.100 --> 03:17:48.960
and also maybe not quite as depressing as sentenced,

03:17:49.300 --> 03:17:50.600
but definitely up there.

03:17:51.590 --> 03:17:51.740
Uh,

03:17:52.060 --> 03:17:55.600
and I had a tough time picking the song because there's so many good ones.

03:17:56.680 --> 03:17:59.800
You will not be surprised to find that my number one is woods of Epre.

03:18:01.080 --> 03:18:03.860
And the song is modern life architecture.

03:18:04.640 --> 03:18:33.560
which not only are the lyrics extremely depressing, but the music goes... I mean, this could almost be funeral doom. It is so achingly slow, and the way he sings it, it's just like... And he sort of... He uses the idea of a city slowly crumbling and going to ruin,

03:18:33.660 --> 03:19:03.580
and it's actually his life and how you make plans and you build up these things and then despite your best efforts, everything just comes crumbling down. And it is just fucking depressing. You know, you might be pleased, I think, to know, George, that I, you know, when we do a list like this, sometimes I'll, I think we all probably Google just to see, you know, top 10 most fucked up songs or something. And I did look for depressing doom songs. None of them influenced my list, but one of them was like a Reddit thread and somebody mentions a Woods of E-Pray.

03:19:03.660 --> 03:19:32.880
song. So I thought that was interesting. I should have written down which song it was. So you're not the only one who thinks. He wrote a lot of depressing stuff. So there you go. Well, it's really cool because there's no overlap at all on any of our songs. Yeah, that's got to be an absolute first. Yeah, you're welcome. Even on our messed up death metal songs, there was some overlap. That was a great cast.

03:19:33.660 --> 03:20:03.540
That was funny. Especially with George's co-worker on it. Perfect. It was fun. All right. So that was our top five. Now we will move on to the... Can I just mention one thing, George? No, moving on. Just kidding. Go ahead. I mean, we just discussed some pretty depressing songs and lyrics. I just realized that it's September is National Suicide Prevention Month. So, I mean, if anyone,

03:20:03.760 --> 03:20:33.620
listening to this podcast that actually does feel down or depressed, go talk to somebody. Go to a friend or family member. Call a hotline or a help center. You aren't alone out there. Absolutely. There's many people in this world who care about you very much and will listen to you. So I just wanted to say that. Good for you. Well done. And I don't mean to be completely funny when I say and do not listen to any of the songs we just mentioned. I do want to mention one last little quick thing.

03:20:33.680 --> 03:20:34.600
is when I was going,

03:20:34.720 --> 03:20:40.540
I was just scrolling my entire catalog of music and one song title jumped out to me.

03:20:41.500 --> 03:20:43.360
One day I'm going to kill you all.

03:20:43.620 --> 03:20:43.800
Oh,

03:20:45.180 --> 03:20:45.620
wait a minute.

03:20:46.700 --> 03:20:47.420
Catatonic society.

03:20:47.640 --> 03:20:47.780
Yeah.

03:20:48.140 --> 03:20:48.860
I know that one.

03:20:49.600 --> 03:20:50.900
And you don't even have the lyrics on it.

03:20:51.060 --> 03:20:51.160
Yeah.

03:20:52.140 --> 03:20:54.040
Is that a promise to your castmates or?

03:20:54.080 --> 03:20:54.280
Yeah.

03:20:55.760 --> 03:20:56.720
What's going on there,

03:20:56.840 --> 03:20:56.920
buddy?

03:20:57.340 --> 03:20:58.000
That's my band.

03:20:58.080 --> 03:20:58.460
My band.

03:20:58.600 --> 03:20:58.960
It's interesting.

03:20:59.300 --> 03:21:00.400
The music we're working on.

03:21:00.560 --> 03:21:30.360
There's some news coming about Catatonic. I was going to say. I have news, but I'm not going to say it today. All right. Okay. So what about those honorables, gents? Who's got them? Oh, right. I have a few of them. Hold on. Let me scroll back up here. I have the angelic process, the resonance of goodbye. I was looking at that for something. Yeah, that's great stuff. Holy shit, is that depressing? Yeah. From weighing souls with sand, Al,

03:21:31.660 --> 03:22:00.420
A band that I they kind of straddle a line for doom and that's why I didn't put them on but this actually is pretty depressing song to me a primordial the coffin ships from the gathering wilderness so the song title and the lyrics refer to these horrible disease ridden overloaded ships that carried Irish people across the Atlantic Ocean because they were trying to escape the great Irish famine but the ship owners barely provided food and they over insured the boat

03:22:00.460 --> 03:22:29.780
if they sunk. So they were actually worth more if they went down. The mortality rate on these death traps were really high. And then Alan Averill's vocal delivery, it feels like this mournful cry on a lot of the song. And there's this middle section where he talks in a very low, doomy voice. And every time I listen to this song, it really gets me. But I don't know if I consider Primordial a doom band. They kind of straddle along from that.

03:22:29.780 --> 03:22:59.580
I mean, it's close enough. I mean, yeah. Yeah. That would be like tied for my number five. I think I mentioned My Dying Bride, The Crown of Sympathy from Turn Loose the Swans. Lycus, Mirage from Chasms. That fucking whole record is pretty. I love that record. Pretty sad. So, but Mirage, I think, is the saddest one on there to me. And so those were my honorable mentions.

03:23:00.601 --> 03:23:28.700
John, you had some? Yeah, real quick. Cathedral, Reaching Happiness, Touching Pain from the Force of Equilibrium album. Shape of Despair, Quiet These Paintings Are off of their Angels of Distress. We mentioned, I think, somebody mentioned Warning, Watching from the Distance. And then the other one that would have been my number one, which easily could have been, is another anathema song called Lost Control off of their Alternative 4 album.

03:23:30.359 --> 03:23:58.860
All right. Any other? I'm going to say, I'll go ahead. Well, if you had a last. I just got two. Demons in Stained Glass from Rotten Kingdom. Self-titled album. I just thought it was kind of cool. If you think about like Demons in Stained Glass, it's probably about the church. It seems to circle that theme. Yes.

03:24:00.500 --> 03:24:29.360
It seems religious to me. I'm not sure. Yes. And then this one I just thought was interesting. Filth Bitch Boogie. It's by Church of Misery. It's the, you know, all the Church of Misery songs are about some different serial killer. And this one's about Aileen Warnrose, who was portrayed by Charlize Theron in the movie The Monster, where she was like a prostitute.

03:24:29.780 --> 03:24:58.320
who killed a lot of the Johns that she was sleeping with. If you look at her, if you do a quick Wikipedia about her life, I don't blame her. God damn, she was fucked up, raped and everything by stepdads and all kinds of dads. Oh my God, I don't blame her for killing dudes. I really don't. Yeah, that stuff doesn't happen in a vacuum. It does sometimes when you're at gain or whatever, but I mean, sometimes those people have a bad history.

03:24:58.760 --> 03:25:27.260
Can I just say that a filth bitch boogie should be the new name of the podcast? You already have your opening theme song. All right. Anybody else? Matt, Jay? Yeah, I was just going to say one and it just because it's kind of a weird one. And I it's I don't know how to explain it, but it's it's really I find it a very depressing song whenever I hear it. It's kind of strangely beautiful, kind of depressing.

03:25:27.840 --> 03:25:56.960
And it's off of Diary of a Mad Man. And it's You Can't Kill Rock and Roll is the most strangely depressing song to me. You might have to put it on to kind of call that back. But it's just this whole leave me alone. I don't want to hear your promises anymore. And Randy Rhodes wrote some really beautiful guitar stuff for it. And it's just this weird anthemic song that somehow isn't. It's just, it pulls up a strange mood in me. Oh, yeah. I love that song. Yeah, it's a great song. That's it. Awesome. All right.

03:25:57.340 --> 03:26:00.680
Well, why don't we move on to what we are listening to.

03:26:24.461 --> 03:26:26.620
And we will start with Markazan.

03:26:26.640 --> 03:26:56.260
Oh man. Okay. Uh, do I do all of them or do all right? Um, we mentioned Conan existential void guardian. I've been listening to that a lot lately. Um, thou magus. I just got the vinyl in the mail on Thursday. So I've been spinning that one quite a bit. Uh, you know, it continues the sludgy doom meets black metal formula, but it, it feels more streamlined to me than the past LPs, even though it's pretty long. I really dig the riffs on, on this one. Um,

03:26:56.660 --> 03:27:26.180
Rituals, we mentioned that as well. It's one of my favorite albums so far this year. It's no frills, skull crushing death metal. Just 30 minutes. It's on constant rotation for me, man. That's great. Yeah. Lurk, Fringe, it's a progressive doom album. I really dig this band as well. I never heard of them before. Actually, it might be their first album, I'm not sure. But I really like this band. I've been spending a lot of time with that. Church,

03:27:26.660 --> 03:27:56.260
Spelled C-H-R-C-H. Light Will Consume Us All. Church without a U in it. Yeah. Female-fronted Doom Band. Pretty sad. Might make, you know, most depressing Doom Metal songs of all time. I'm really kind of digging that. Infernal Coil just came out within a world forgotten. So I haven't really gotten to that too much, but digging that so far. Mourn to the Night Unknown.

03:27:57.320 --> 03:28:26.460
That's a pretty good album. Enjoying that quite a bit. I picked up this album in Norway by a band called Nakash. And the album is called Phantasmal Triunity. I got it based on a recommendation from the shop guy at a place called Catacomb and Records in Oslo. And I love this record. The band is Norwegian and they have this rolling black and death sound. Just really killer catchy riffs of black metal.

03:28:26.680 --> 03:28:27.600
on this one.

03:28:28.640 --> 03:28:34.540
And it was just really cool to chat with the record store guy about what kind of metal I like and then get this album.

03:28:35.980 --> 03:28:37.560
It might be one of my favorites this year.

03:28:38.360 --> 03:28:39.080
So that's pretty cool.

03:28:40.459 --> 03:28:43.120
And I've been listening to a band called Talons.

03:28:43.340 --> 03:28:45.240
It's more of like instrumental post-rock.

03:28:46.900 --> 03:28:47.820
But I kind of dig in it.

03:28:48.160 --> 03:28:49.940
So I have to give it a few more spins.

03:28:51.480 --> 03:28:54.940
And then Oak Pantheon from A Whisper.

03:28:54.960 --> 03:29:24.280
This is the Oak Pantheon's second album from 2012. It's remastered. They got a new album cover for 2018. It's like this melodic, uplifting, blackish folk metal with growled vocals, acoustic passages, some cool, clean vocal harmonies. It feels like it's inspired by Agaloc, like old Agaloc.

03:29:24.280 --> 03:29:26.820
So if you dig that band then you'll probably like this

03:29:28.199 --> 03:29:31.860
My wife actually told me about this album and she does not like metal at all

03:29:32.899 --> 03:29:35.920
But she does structural engineering projects. He's a structural engineer

03:29:36.540 --> 03:29:40.740
and one of the band members his name is Tanner Swenson. He plays guitar

03:29:41.779 --> 03:29:45.440
bass drums and does vocals. There's another guy in the band too, but

03:29:46.819 --> 03:29:49.300
So he's on it. So that's how she knew about this band

03:29:49.570 --> 03:29:52.681
Oak Pantheon and I've never actually met the guy, but we've talked about metal

03:29:52.680 --> 03:30:21.940
over email and I've texted him on my wife's phone. But I'm quite enjoying what he's doing in the Oak Pantheon. So it's just cool to find something that I probably never would have found if not for that. Awesome. So that's it. Sweet. All right, Matt. So after the last issue of Decibel, I revisited some Ripping Corps, Dreaming with the Dead. I did that too. I did not know that that was Eric Rutan. Yeah, same here.

03:30:23.261 --> 03:30:52.660
Pleasantly Surprised. A band from Italy. Some death. They're called The Secret and their album Luxe Tenebris. I believe this is a one-woman black metal project. Nach Leder and her album Lynx. Been listening to every album by Wormrot. I have been doing that all year. I cannot get enough of them. The new Inferra Bruo. Enjoying that quite a bit. Also listening to some Mourn to the Night Unknown. Very, very

03:30:52.700 --> 03:30:56.740
on that album. Will, I think you threw this one out. Iskald

03:30:57.160 --> 03:31:00.440
In Hostinga. Some Black and Thrash from Norway.

03:31:00.680 --> 03:31:04.320
I think that was Jay. Oh, was that you, Jay? Yeah, that's a good record.

03:31:04.620 --> 03:31:06.500
Nice. I like that. I sold it as a sort of

03:31:07.020 --> 03:31:08.200
slightly enslaved-ish

03:31:09.620 --> 03:31:10.780
like older enslaved.

03:31:11.080 --> 03:31:13.280
Anyway, yeah, I like that record. I've listened to it quite a few times.

03:31:14.279 --> 03:31:15.220
I mentioned previously

03:31:16.199 --> 03:31:18.180
Christiane, Scourge of the Enthroned.

03:31:19.120 --> 03:31:19.640
A band

03:31:20.280 --> 03:31:21.620
spelled O-U-T-R-E.

03:31:21.720 --> 03:31:50.960
I want to say Outre. Outre. Outre. The album Hollow Earth. Night in Distortion by the band Owl. Band called Descent. Towers of Grandiosity. Band called Planks. And they have an album called Funeral Mouth. That is actually, I think it's like three or four years old, but somehow I stumbled onto that. New Pig Destroyer. A band called Hyperdontia. Nexus of Teeth. Some decent death from Copenhagen. Dentist Metal.

03:31:51.920 --> 03:31:52.340
Yes.

03:31:54.699 --> 03:32:03.860
It's weird. I couldn't get past that. I was like, this is too much. It reminds me of the dentist too much. Although, I should point out, I've never had a cavity in 43 years.

03:32:03.860 --> 03:32:04.680
I saw that.

03:32:05.500 --> 03:32:05.820
That's insane.

03:32:06.500 --> 03:32:07.420
Well, that's just crazy.

03:32:08.280 --> 03:32:08.740
That's nuts.

03:32:08.940 --> 03:32:09.620
Never had a...

03:32:10.140 --> 03:32:10.780
Do you have false teeth?

03:32:12.740 --> 03:32:13.500
Are you a robot?

03:32:14.260 --> 03:32:16.380
No, and you will kneel before my perfect mouth, Jay.

03:32:19.100 --> 03:32:19.960
I will.

03:32:21.340 --> 03:32:51.320
And then last for me would be basically all the Rivers of Nile albums. Sweet. So good. So good. I love that band. Yes. They got their hooks in Matt bad this year. Real bad. Is that going to be your number one, Matt? Possibly. They sacked me up. All right, John. We've already mentioned most of these. The Skull, Endless Road Turns Dark, Infero Burr, Sarmint, All Father, and All

03:32:52.319 --> 03:33:20.700
The Voivod, Voivid, The Wake. Maybe not necessarily metal, but they have some metal in them. King Crow, The Persistence. And because of this band being named to Prog Power next year, I went back and pulled out Insomnium's Winner's Gate from a couple years ago and been spinning out a lot lately. So, that's it. Yeah, mine's real short too because we've mentioned most of them. But The Conan, The Deicide,

03:33:23.859 --> 03:33:49.320
The Skull, Pig Destroyer, Voivod, Allfather. The only ones I'd add is, there's a new, Decibel mentioned these guys in one of his little online streaming articles. Hellrat out of Philadelphia, their album Counting Sins. Man, I just really like these guys. It's kind of like a Motorhead, Stoner, Rock kind of, I don't know, it's kind of, it's definitely in that vein. And they're from Philly. Hellrat?

03:33:50.560 --> 03:33:51.040
LRAD.

03:33:53.120 --> 03:33:53.340
Okay.

03:33:54.679 --> 03:33:56.340
And I'm really digging those guys.

03:33:56.540 --> 03:33:57.840
And I've been talking.

03:33:58.100 --> 03:33:59.060
I've been emailing with them.

03:33:59.420 --> 03:34:01.300
And they may play Atlas the day before Thanksgiving.

03:34:02.660 --> 03:34:04.160
And then Green Dragon.

03:34:05.840 --> 03:34:05.920
Yeah.

03:34:07.560 --> 03:34:08.800
And then Green Dragon.

03:34:09.280 --> 03:34:10.420
Kind of a Stone or Doom band.

03:34:10.790 --> 03:34:11.780
I mentioned it on.

03:34:11.960 --> 03:34:13.840
Or send it on the messenger to everyone.

03:34:14.250 --> 03:34:14.880
I really like that.

03:34:15.130 --> 03:34:17.860
And then I got the new Suicidal Tendencies.

03:34:18.120 --> 03:34:19.920
Still Psycho Punk after all these years.

03:34:20.040 --> 03:34:22.820
And I'm kind of annoyed that I just missed their

03:34:23.440 --> 03:34:25.020
They did a 30th anniversary show

03:34:25.280 --> 03:34:26.660
at the 930 Club here in D.C.

03:34:26.780 --> 03:34:28.100
But it was the same night as the Atlas

03:34:28.700 --> 03:34:30.780
fifth year anniversary party. So I missed it.

03:34:30.960 --> 03:34:33.220
But I have a soft spot

03:34:33.320 --> 03:34:34.140
for Suicidal Tendencies.

03:34:35.739 --> 03:34:36.700
So are these

03:34:37.440 --> 03:34:38.600
punk songs? I mean, because I know they did

03:34:38.700 --> 03:34:40.620
they already did something called Still Psycho

03:34:40.740 --> 03:34:42.860
after all these years. But this is still psycho punk?

03:34:43.740 --> 03:34:44.580
Yes, it's more

03:34:44.880 --> 03:34:45.260
punk stuff.

03:34:49.219 --> 03:34:50.020
So it's

03:34:50.760 --> 03:34:53.860
have listened to their later catalog stuff. They've gotten

03:34:55.040 --> 03:34:56.680
kind of more back to their first

03:34:56.840 --> 03:34:58.760
album. It's much more punk stuff. It's not

03:34:58.960 --> 03:35:00.720
that crossover metal thing that

03:35:00.760 --> 03:35:02.600
they were doing in How I Left Tomorrow

03:35:02.980 --> 03:35:04.860
or Lights Camera Revolution.

03:35:06.060 --> 03:35:07.680
You know, I don't know if I ever told you guys

03:35:07.700 --> 03:35:08.660
this story, but when they

03:35:09.020 --> 03:35:10.780
saw them with Megadeth last year,

03:35:11.380 --> 03:35:12.460
I got to meet Mike Muir

03:35:13.140 --> 03:35:15.120
and got a picture with him and all that shit.

03:35:15.120 --> 03:35:16.420
And I asked him, I said, what?

03:35:19.480 --> 03:35:48.580
He said, I asked him, what is the song Clap Like Ozzy about? I get it, but I don't necessarily get it. And he told me. And he said, when he was a kid, he was watching the California Jam on television, because they showed that on television. And that one, obviously, Sabbath played. Well, there was only one. There might have been two. And anyway, and he said, and all these serious rock artists coming out and doing stuff and blah, blah, blah. And he said, and then Sabbath came out, and Ozzy just does this whole clap thing. And he was like, who's this cool motherfucker who's just having the best time of his life?

03:35:49.480 --> 03:36:19.240
His whole thing is clap like Ozzy. Like, you know, dance like nobody's watching type thing. And that's it. And so that's like one of the philosophies he lives by is clap like Ozzy. Nice. Anyway. Yeah. I'm curious. Are you recommending that record? Well, I mean, I could obviously go listen to it, but I'm just curious because I do. They all have a soft spot for them, too. I mean, I like it. It's Suicide Tendencies. Yeah, it is what it is. Suicide Tendencies playing a whole bunch of punk songs. Cover songs? You know, I'm not even sure.

03:36:19.280 --> 03:36:48.640
because I'm not into punk at all. I shouldn't say not into punk at all, but it's not my genre of choice. They could be all cover songs. They could be all originals. I'm not even sure. It sounds good. It sounds like good Suicide Tendencies. It's fun. I would say pick it up. Will do. From my list, fairly brief. Again, a lot of repeats here. Allfather, Pit Destroyer, Conan. I have listened to the two new Behemoth songs more than I should let myself do because I don't ruin that fucking record for myself. The Voivod record I'm really into.

03:36:49.280 --> 03:37:19.260
The Skull Record I dig. Nobody's really mentioned this yet. It's in the box, but that new Satan record is really fucking good. Satan Cruel Magic. It's... I don't know what to say about it. It's sort of like a weird, slightly more obscure maiden record that could have come out between Killers and the first one. You know what I mean? I mean, that's what Satan is anyway, but I don't know. There's something slightly intelligent about this one. And I kind of know and love them anyway. And then last but not least, and I just sent it to

03:37:19.280 --> 03:37:48.760
the thread because I really want you guys to check it out. It's a band, a strange band called Grim Rhythm. And they just have two songs out, but they're working on their full length. And in particular, they have a song called Formaldehyde Blues. They're this weird mix between ACDC and Motorhead with really weird dark black themes. And yet it's super fun. I can't explain it. And if you go look at them, the cover of this single is one of them in really inappropriate cutoff jeans in the middle of a graveyard playing.

03:37:48.820 --> 03:38:18.780
in the middle of the night playing his guitar. You've got to look. The song is great. Formaldehyde Blues. And it's sort of a takeoff of Down Payment Blues by ACDC. But it's still kind of like early Venemy Motorhead, too. I don't know how to explain it. So I really would like to suggest these guys to you guys. Grim Rhythm. There's only two songs you can listen to. I've seen it on the Bandcamp feed a lot. Like a lot of people picking it up. But I looked at the cover and just skipped over it. It's slightly tongue-in-cheek, but also kind of like serious ball.

03:38:19.899 --> 03:38:47.680
I think you in particular might dig it. All right. Try it. Take your balls out. Yeah. You never know. How many times have I had to tell you, George, if we try it, you might like it. And I'm talking about the things we did in private, but you know what I'm saying. Connects in hand. That's right. Anywho, that's my list of tools. All right. Well, as you probably know, I haven't really been listening to much music lately. Yeah, so this should be a short list, right? It's going to be an extremely short list.

03:38:48.320 --> 03:39:18.300
So, all right. First up, we have the new Alice in Chains, Rainier Fog. It's our third album without Lane, and it's pretty damn good. Do you consider that metal? No. Well, in a way, I mean, they always, everybody always says how Alice in Chains was more of a metal band than a grunge band because of, you know, they were all big metal fans. Yeah, I would say that Alice in Chains, yeah, Alice in Chains

03:39:18.340 --> 03:39:48.300
is the one metal band that from the it's the one grunge band from the 90s that metalhead it's okay to like if you're a metalhead but they're not grunge though right them and some them and some grunge was just yeah they get lumped in all those bands sounded all their riffs from that period riffs in the early period yeah yeah yeah also been listening to the new and all for an all-nath rock album a new kind of horror uh as i i mentioned i think the other day to the guys i was listening to it and he does some like really

03:39:48.939 --> 03:40:18.260
I said it sounded like King Diamond in a blender. I love that description. You make me want to watch Excalibur. No, nothing. Yeah, we've talked about that. It's a great movie. Next up we have Blood of Serpents, Sulphur Sovereign, the second album from a Swedish death thrash band. Then we have Cast the Stone, Empyrean Atrophy, an EP from a band from Missouri. It's a bunch of the guys from Sky.

03:40:18.320 --> 03:40:20.540
which I don't care for

03:40:20.720 --> 03:40:22.720
Scour. That's that other Phil Anselmo band.

03:40:22.880 --> 03:40:24.440
But these guys are pretty cool.

03:40:25.620 --> 03:40:27.180
So you're on letter C

03:40:27.720 --> 03:40:28.760
for someone who is

03:40:29.220 --> 03:40:30.640
not listening to any music

03:40:31.280 --> 03:40:31.400
whatsoever.

03:40:34.120 --> 03:40:36.020
Do you ever feel like you've been ripped off?

03:40:36.779 --> 03:40:38.800
I feel like I need a nap already.

03:40:39.140 --> 03:40:40.760
I guess it's all relative, right?

03:40:43.180 --> 03:40:44.260
I was waiting for that.

03:40:45.100 --> 03:40:46.440
Hey, well, objects in the mirror

03:40:46.600 --> 03:40:48.180
appear closer than they really are.

03:40:48.280 --> 03:41:16.460
I think the whole week is going to put on. We got the promo for the new Thonic album, Battlefields of Asura, Taiwanese black metal. Not entirely sure what I think of that one yet, but I've given it a little bit of a listen. Is that Thonic or Thonic? It's pronounced Thonic, but it does begin with a C. God damn it! I thought we were on T already.

03:41:18.260 --> 03:41:48.220
Oh, that's why he asked. Still in C. Clavicus Vile, The Night Spirits Calls. First album of Illinois Prague Death Band. It's pretty good. Check it out. The new Crippled Black Phoenix album, Great Escape. They're a post-rock band. Will's just shaking his head. I actually listened to that recently. I kind of dug that. Yeah, it's good. This next one's what Will's feeling right now. It's the band's called Onward.

03:41:48.260 --> 03:42:18.220
We, E-N-N-U-I. End of the Circle. It's the fourth album from this Funeral Doom band from the country of Georgia. And yeah, Will definitely has the Ennui going on. Forming the Void, Will. Rift, their third album, Louisiana Stoner Metal. I love that album. And I'm listening to it because of you. Thank you. I could call this next band Fraggle Rock because that's kind of what it looks like, but it's actually Fraggle.

03:42:19.441 --> 03:42:48.220
A Spectral Oblivion. Second album from a prog death band from India. Very good. I'm sad it's not called Doozer. What? Fraggle Rock? Oh, gotcha. Trash Heap, Doozers. Well, come on, man. It's a surprisingly good album. I recommend it. Also, due to Will, I listened to the self-titled Green Dragon album. More Stoner Doom. Will, really?

03:42:48.280 --> 03:43:15.880
He really likes the stoner doom. I do. Uh, irreversible mechanism. Sort of like this list. Uh, immersion. Second album of, uh, prog death from Belarus. Uh, I scald the album that's already been mentioned. Uh, Norwegian black thrash album title. I can't pronounce. Katla Madurastin, uh, Icelandic post-rock band. It's from what came out like last year. It's good stuff. Uh, Hey, welcome back, Jay. He's only on K by the way.

03:43:18.280 --> 03:43:47.040
I thought Jay just passed out. Closing out the letter K for John, King Crow, the persistence, prog metal. And because of Jay and the Skull Crusher today, I've been listening a lot of Zeppelin. Are we on Z? No. L. But moving on to M, we have Mirrors for Psychic Warfare.

03:43:48.280 --> 03:44:18.140
What I Become, second album. What's his name from Neurosis and some other dude? Is that Scott Kelly? I don't remember which one it is. I think so. I think so, yeah. It's like weird avant-garde shit, but it's kind of cool. Skipping N altogether. What? Moving on to O. There's a band. I guess it's spelled O-V-E-R, but there's an umlaut over the O, so maybe it's Uber. Facing Transcendence.

03:44:18.280 --> 03:44:48.200
It's their first album of atmospheric black metal. I've been listening to the Cycloptic album, As the Kingdom Drowns. We got a promo the other day for a band called Skald, not I-Skald. S-K-A-L-D. It's Les Chants des Vikings. I'm not sure which country. I think it might be Swedish, but it's a Scandinavian chanting, sing-y, folky kind of stuff.

03:44:48.260 --> 03:44:48.720
Really cool.

03:44:50.820 --> 03:44:53.860
And then I got this one from a guy at work, actually.

03:44:54.640 --> 03:44:55.320
Stoned Jesus.

03:44:55.950 --> 03:44:57.040
The album is called Pilgrims.

03:44:57.260 --> 03:44:58.980
It's a Ukrainian stoner doom band.

03:44:59.580 --> 03:45:01.260
If you haven't listened to it, Will, you might like it.

03:45:02.100 --> 03:45:02.840
I listened to that.

03:45:03.120 --> 03:45:03.760
Actually, it was really good.

03:45:04.080 --> 03:45:04.740
Yeah, I saw it.

03:45:04.760 --> 03:45:11.240
I saw it in the iTunes list and I skipped over it because the name of the band and the cover just looked dumb.

03:45:11.420 --> 03:45:12.260
That's what I did too.

03:45:12.430 --> 03:45:15.320
But on the recommendation, I listened to it and it was pretty good.

03:45:17.220 --> 03:45:46.080
And finally, I know it's a shortlist and all, but the band Un, U-N, and their album Sentiment, their Seattle Funeral Doom band. A little perkier than you would, not as dark as typical Funeral Doom, but definitely slow and long-ass songs. I love their first album. I'm pretty sure they're playing Atlas coming up in a couple of weeks or months. Really? I think so.

03:45:46.140 --> 03:46:16.000
I'm trying to look at my calendar really quick while we're talking. I was going to ask a couple questions. We list all these bands. What was your favorite band? That's a good question. It's going to be really hard for George. Yeah, why don't you guys go while I look at mine? I've only got a few to choose from. I've got to look at mine too. That's hard. That's actually kind of hard, man.

03:46:16.220 --> 03:46:45.880
For me, probably the Pig Destroyer. That's probably the one I've spun the most of the things I mentioned. I really do like those guys. Probably Rivers from me. Of course. Mine's either Conan, Deicide, or Hellrad. Yeah, I really like that Nakash Phantasmal Triunity. It's really cool. I just didn't expect to even... I'd never heard of this band, and just to get that from somebody in Norway. You know, I like this concept. Put in a little extra emphasis on one title,

03:46:47.460 --> 03:47:14.940
Yeah, man. I'm always, you know, I'm here to improve. Sort of like our album of the month, but it's the album of the episode or something. Yeah. Because, I mean, we talk about all these albums we listen to, but, like, what is the one that really stuck with you, you know? Like, maybe it's one of the ones that's going to be on the final list at the end of the year. Yeah, we should do that. Like, at the end of the episode, we should be like, so, you know, if you listen to one album from me from this episode, what would it be? Yeah. Done.

03:47:15.980 --> 03:47:45.460
Another question I was going to ask you guys is like, I mean, now, I mean, the podcast has been going for a while. You guys must get a lot of albums from different labels and stuff, you know? I mean, how much stuff do you guys actually get? Not, okay, a lot more than we listen to. I mean, let's clarify this. It's a lot more than George puts into the box. So George is the gatekeeper. I am the gatekeeper. Are you the key master? Oh, right. That's why his list is 20 minutes long.

03:47:46.280 --> 03:48:13.140
Anything that I come across that's good, that might end up on my list, I put on there. I mean, we probably get a dozen albums a day. Are you serious? Yeah. I mean, sometimes more, sometimes less. It's like Bandcamp. I mean, 90% of my email is press releases and stuff.

03:48:15.500 --> 03:48:45.260
We text. We don't email. And so almost all my email are press releases. And half to three quarters of those have promos attached to them. But I mean, you hear my lists. You know, I know a lot of music. And of those dozen albums, I might have heard one or two of them before. Yeah. Yeah. I guess I'm kind of shocked because and sorry, this is not a criticism whatsoever. It's just I'm surprised.

03:48:45.380 --> 03:48:50.880
of the volume that you get because we may get like five or six things a month in the box so i guess

03:48:51.000 --> 03:48:56.600
it's just a testament of how much shit is out there yeah it's either i mean it's either crap i mean but

03:48:56.700 --> 03:49:03.200
that's the thing is i can't even i could never possibly unless i didn't have a job keep up with

03:49:03.500 --> 03:49:08.400
everything that comes in yeah you know so there was that period of time where we should have had a lot

03:49:08.480 --> 03:49:14.440
more in the box right i've said before if you want i'll take everything that comes in and put it in the

03:49:14.440 --> 03:49:44.420
You can sort through it and you'll never find shit. We need a bigger box, actually. We give shit to George for having a long list, but it's kind of cool that he went through that many bands. You know what I could do? Because, I mean, it's not like I'm trying to keep this stuff from you. It's just that I don't have time to go through it all. What I could do is I could set up an auto-forward to an email address

03:49:44.460 --> 03:50:14.400
that we all have access to. And then you can, you know, you can check it anytime you want to look for stuff that's in there. I would do that, George, just because maybe they'll listen to something that you haven't listened to. Yeah. Yeah. Cause I, you know, so much stuff comes in that I'm like, is it a band? I know if it's a band, I know I'll look at it. If it's not, then it's like, well, does it sound cool? If it's like, you know, how many, how many bands?

03:50:14.560 --> 03:50:42.660
If we not heard because they had an introduction that lasted 30 seconds, it's like, I'm out of here. Well, no, I mean, I won't even listen to like 99% of this stuff. It's like, oh, well, their name is dumb or their album art looks like a third grader did it. Or, you know, there's just nothing that makes me want to stop, download it, unzip it and listen to it. Because, you know, if I had to do that with a dozen or more albums a day, that's all I'd do.

03:50:43.140 --> 03:51:13.100
So let's turn this into a learning point for if there's anybody in a band out there like what would make it easier if you're sending a promo to somebody would it be here's an instant link to a song that we think is the best song so you can listen to it very quickly because I'm guessing that what you get is all zip files exactly what you said you have to download it then unzip it and then listen to it but they can have a link to a song like on YouTube or something it's like okay I click this link this is what they think the best I'm saying that's not for your

03:51:13.100 --> 03:51:43.020
I mean, because we even get stuff on Facebook. We got something from an Italian record label today. They're like, hey, you know. Abadanza. I mean, I agree with, I mean, if I was going through that many stuff, I would like, you know, they send the press release, they have a link to one song, like, here's like, this is very indicative of our sound. But we also have a link to the rest of the album, too. Listen to this, and then, you know, maybe you'll want to listen to the rest of it. You gotta have. Because that'd be easier. Yeah.

03:51:43.100 --> 03:52:11.780
I mean, you gotta have a professional look about you. If your album cover looks like fucking third grade crafts and arts class. Like the new Voivod one? Unfortunately, yeah. I mean, I like OA's artwork, but it's not really my style. But yeah, if it's terrible art, you know, I'm from the 80s. I used to pick up albums based on what the album art looked like. As we all did. Yeah.

03:52:12.120 --> 03:52:41.720
And so it's not that bad, not that good albums can't have bad album artwork. But if I see really cool artwork, I'm like, what is that? You know, but also if it's a stack, if it's in a stack of a thousand other records, you're not going to grab it. Right. It's, you know, it's, it's having a leg up on the other guy. If you have really cool album artwork or if your band name is good, you know, I'm going to listen to Metallica over raging butt fart.

03:52:43.100 --> 03:53:12.080
You know how many bands we get that have piss or vomit or shit in their name that it's like, yeah, whatever. I'm not taking you seriously. Doesn't mean they're not good, but I don't have time for that. Well, because I like this suggestion that Marcasson has made, I have the meaning to suggest to you guys, unless you think it would elongate things, that at the year end, be prepared to say when you say your

03:53:12.100 --> 03:53:41.620
to say what your favorite song on the album is, at least in the top 10 or something. I'd like to know that. That's too much work. Fair enough. You can if you want to. Says the guy who increases the amount of albums for the mid-year and the year-end every year. Well, you figure that's 25 albums that I have to sit down and not only do I have to figure out which 25, but then I have to listen to each of those albums and pick a song. I mean, I'm not saying it's impossible. I mean, your favorite song is probably on your favorite album, so you could just mention that, Jay, when you list your favorite album.

03:53:41.700 --> 03:53:44.320
I'm not against it I just don't know if I can do it

03:53:44.400 --> 03:53:48.900
not a separate list I meant you would say my number five album is this and my favorite song on it is this

03:53:49.060 --> 03:53:55.000
oh right yeah yeah but that you know just I I may do that this comes up because I always yeah fuck those guys do it yourself

03:54:00.279 --> 03:54:04.540
as you wish Jay but I will I mean but will you edit it for me George

03:54:11.421 --> 03:54:34.500
Nice. There we go. And see. All right. We're at four hours and six minutes right now. I just got the evil eye from the head shed that we have dinner reservations and she can't believe I'm still talking on this microphone. All right. Well, we are fortunately. Blame the new guy. We are fortunately at the end. So we want to thank Mark San for coming on.

03:54:35.340 --> 03:55:04.520
Yeah, thanks so much for having me on. I really enjoyed doing this. If you ever need somebody to fill in or do anything, I will do this test anytime you want. Yeah, you're part of the family now. You're a good fit. I really appreciate it. I assume you're on Facebook. Yeah, man, follow me on Facebook. I think it's just Markisan NASA on Facebook. On Twitter, it's DarthSan. And I'll send you guys

03:55:04.560 --> 03:55:08.960
My Guide to Chicago. Once you guys friend me on that. I can send you

03:55:10.419 --> 03:55:12.360
my comic if you want to read it too.

03:55:13.050 --> 03:55:13.840
I checked it out on

03:55:17.619 --> 03:55:18.060
Comicology.

03:55:19.119 --> 03:55:19.560
Comixology.

03:55:21.040 --> 03:55:22.160
Damn it, Will.

03:55:24.800 --> 03:55:26.000
I sent you a

03:55:26.820 --> 03:55:28.640
I just sent you a friend request too.

03:55:29.639 --> 03:55:30.920
I'll text you later

03:55:31.440 --> 03:55:32.920
or message you, but I would like to get your

03:55:35.999 --> 03:56:01.860
It was a blast. It feels like I'm just talking to friends here. That's what we do here. So if you've listened to this far into the episode and you'd like to come on and chat with us too, send us a message. But you should probably email me because I don't know what the hell it is. Facebook Messenger is fine when you're talking to people, but when people message a page, I get a notification, but half the time I can't find it.

03:56:02.460 --> 03:56:03.000
It's weird.

03:56:03.640 --> 03:56:06.940
And so I set up an auto message telling people to email me.

03:56:07.100 --> 03:56:09.660
So if you want to come on the show or anything else at all,

03:56:10.560 --> 03:56:12.700
george at metalheadspodcast.com.

03:56:12.900 --> 03:56:13.280
Email me.

03:56:13.460 --> 03:56:14.180
And like us on Facebook.

03:56:14.600 --> 03:56:14.700
Yep.

03:56:15.040 --> 03:56:15.120
Yep.

03:56:15.540 --> 03:56:16.500
Somebody unliked us today.

03:56:16.520 --> 03:56:17.880
We have one less than we did this morning.

03:56:18.420 --> 03:56:18.660
Fuckers.

03:56:18.900 --> 03:56:19.340
That was me.

03:56:19.560 --> 03:56:20.100
That was me.

03:56:22.920 --> 03:56:24.620
That was me because I wasn't sure.

03:56:27.640 --> 03:56:28.740
I'm going to add you guys back.

03:56:30.140 --> 03:56:30.440
All right.

03:56:30.580 --> 03:56:31.940
So yeah, check us out on Facebook.

Twitter, I am Disciple OV Metal. Catatonic J-O or Catatonic J, whatever. One of those. That was my Xbox handle. Brew Metal Will, it's pretty much Bandcamp. Now Instagram, Twitter, whatever. I'm WhiteCluster69 and my album of the podcast, which I didn't get to say, was Farrah Burrow's Ceremon. Oh yeah, I didn't do one either. I'll go with that. I like that. You'll have one of those?

Can I just say real quick, first of all, Marcus, again, pleasure to have you on. But also just a reminder how much I enjoy doing this with you guys. It's always good to see your faces. Yeah. Yeah. He's got an Amazon page, too. I sent that out earlier. He's got an Amazon. I do. Oh, yeah. You do. I was looking at stuff on there. So find him on Amazon. I'm always surprised. You know, it's just weird.

Later.
